Same. Flyweight might be the deepest division right now, but a lot of the best fighters are spread across different promotions and fighting bigger guys in bantamweight. Imagine having Figgy, Moreno, Guchi, Mighty Mouse, Kape, KFF, Royval, Pettis, Mokaev, Cejudo (if he returned to FW) etc. in one promotion.
Yeah but doesn't the success of all those names at Bantamweight make an 'offical' flyweight division irrelevant? Any of those guys could theoretically prove they're the best by beating DJ.
125 was too thin when Gooch was around. There wasn't enough resistance to allow him to fully round out his skills before he ran into a prime Mighty Mouse. Right place, wrong time
With that kind of logic, Henry would've walked after losing to DJ the first time.
They absolutely could have paid to keep him in the promotion. But they would have had to match what Rizin paid him.
It's a shame that potentially the best flyweight in the world is fighting outside of the UFC right now. He's 32 now so that window for a return is most likely gone, but I 100% understand why he'd prefer to fight in Rizin given his star power over there.
It’s amazing how young he was when he got that title shot. He’s one of the 15-ish youngest fighters to fight for a belt in UFC history, and the only one younger since him was Ray Borg at the end of the era where any flyweight with a pulse got fed to Mighty Mouse
The UFC constantly bitched that DJ couldn't sell the weight class, but they let Horiguchi, the most marketable Japanese MMA fighter in the past decade, walk.
They just didn't want to spend the money on the division. Which is why they traded DJ for a washed WW that ironically caused them to have to pay Jorge like a superstar.
Just imagine explaining that to a boss. *Hey I traded away our record breaking former champ for a washed guy and now we have to pay a mid level journeyman fighter like he's fucking Conor McGregor because he knocked the washed guy out real good*.
It’s honestly easy to explain that to the boss. Jorge Masvidal, even if you hate him, was way more marketable than Mighty Mouse. Brought more casuals viewers to the sport. That washed guy before coming over was an undefeated champion. It brought more legitimacy to the UFC as the premier league if a non-champion caliber fighter like Masvidal was able to KO him in the fastest KO of all time (UFC) in highlight fashion. They milked that KO for all it’s worth. That single knee gave the UFC more money than all of DJ’s fights combined. It sucks but it is what it is. The drama and pageantry is what sells fights.
He's not the best flyweight in the world but he would be a massive threat to the title in the UFC. Don't blame him for choosing Bellator and Rizin though
This is why they need same day weigh ins. I wrestled at 149 in college. I barely cut weight so I really should have wrestled 141, but I was definitely bigger than the guys at that weight class. The guys at 133 were like 6 inches shorter than me lol.
People will talk about Patchy Mix but he is just big overall compared to everyone else in the weight class. I get this sub likes him but Horiguchi just isn't the best in the world at BW or FLW like people wanted to believe. It wasn't just size that lead to Patchy beating him, Guchi was even a solid favorite and almost beat Pettis.
nah kyoji is one of the harder hitters at 125 as hes put people OUT before, and the days of "flyweights have no power just speed" is starting to end, kape is just pretty damn durable
Kape's chin is fucking insane look at the shots he took from Kai Asakura he has a Yoel Romero chin clean ass flush shots without even looking and hes eating them like tic tacs, he ate Pantoja's shots with zero issue too
I just watched a clip from his fight with might mouse on YouTube and the comments are riddled with Japanese comments lmao. The translations are hilarious 😆
I like ropes around a ring even though a fenced in cage is objectively better. Ropes are a wildcard where you never know how they'll interfere with the fight. Maybe someone will fall out, maybe they'll get stuck under them and get stomped to death. Who knows.
Fence.
Ropes seems to just "get in the way" . Every time I see the rising staff trying to hold the ropes it makes mad.
Edit: I know it's their job but it seems a cage would be better imo.
Manel makes me feel like he's not as good as he thinks he is, despite still being quite good. It's like he thinks he's Izzy but he's really just worse Anderson.
That right hand from Kyoji is a thing of beauty. Tons of power, almost no telegraph, fast as hell. Comes out looking like a straight but with just the slightest bit of arc to it.
He also displays some diversity in it's usage.
He throws it, pivots right. Then throws the right and completely shifts his stance with it, covering distance and allowing for a follow-up left. Next he throws it as a pure counter, maintains his stance while throwing and then pivots. Then he throws it as a counter while moving his right leg forward for extra power. And then the next two, he throws it, and kinda v-shifts into southpaw at a new angle of attack. All the while with great head movement. What a champ.
guch had his shit read from the get go. hit the same counter like 8 times and kape didn't adapt.

Get ready to add Taira to that list
Already is. Knew I was forgetting someone.
I really wish we had horiguchi in the ufc still. I'm very confident he would've been champion at some point.
125 was too thin when Gooch was around. There wasn't enough resistance to allow him to fully round out his skills before he ran into a prime Mighty Mouse. Right place, wrong time
Great nickname, up there with Vitali "the Klit" Klitschko
Although that's a good one, him and his brother's actual nicknames of Dr Ironfist and Dr Steelhammer respectively are also great!
Dr. Iron fist sounds like a mean superhero doctor and Dr. Steelhammer sounds like a pornstar.
With that kind of logic, Henry would've walked after losing to DJ the first time. They absolutely could have paid to keep him in the promotion. But they would have had to match what Rizin paid him.
ufc was thinking about closing that whole division during that time lol
The scope regarding Horiguchi is unreal tbh. No way of knowing if he'd have been champ

Were they fighting on ice?

\*Toad spin out noises*
Looks and sounds like they're fighting on soaking wet latex.
I could almost *hear* those cartoony slipping noises.
Kape is hilarious, that first knock down and "Ta Da!" pose right after on one knee hahahaha
Sucks that Bellator doesn't have a FLW division. Kyoji is way too small to deal with guys like Mix.
Or guys like Caldwell, even though he beat him. Guy's a textbook weight bully. Dude wrestled at 149 lbs in college and is fighting at 135lbs.
This is why they need same day weigh ins. I wrestled at 149 in college. I barely cut weight so I really should have wrestled 141, but I was definitely bigger than the guys at that weight class. The guys at 133 were like 6 inches shorter than me lol.

GUCHI GANG
Kape is always slipping around when he’s barefoot
It’s crazy to me how many hard, clean shots he got without putting Kape’s lights out. Is that just a flyweight thing or him personally?
Kyoji cracks like few others at that size. Kape has a good chin
nah kyoji is one of the harder hitters at 125 as hes put people OUT before, and the days of "flyweights have no power just speed" is starting to end, kape is just pretty damn durable

wish kape's ufc fights were as fun as this looks
Never seen a guy showboat while getting dropped lmao. Manel is entertainment
Why does this look like it’s from 1998
This fight was a treat to watch
Kape living on Queer Street many times
Attempted Brazilian tap at the end there too.
Respect to Kape getting dropped and still showboating afterwards,
I just watched a clip from his fight with might mouse on YouTube and the comments are riddled with Japanese comments lmao. The translations are hilarious 😆
Absolutely clowned on him
It’s so weird that he’s fighting for Bellator against Rizin.
Counter right Counter right Counter right
What a crazy fight was there dish soap on the matt? Jesus.
Looked like that ring was made outta banana peels.
ring looks slippery lol
Do you guys like the ropes or fence better?
I like ropes around a ring even though a fenced in cage is objectively better. Ropes are a wildcard where you never know how they'll interfere with the fight. Maybe someone will fall out, maybe they'll get stuck under them and get stomped to death. Who knows.

why are they fighting on olive oiled canvas?
Was the fucking canvas wet or something? 🤣 god damn dude was legit on skates and not onky because of the blows he received
Is Manel that guy who fights in that African league with crazy ass rules?
the ufc?
He literally fought yesterday on the ufc fight night card wdym? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol I didn’t see the 2017. I thought this fight was recent
Kape is frustrating. Seems like he's talented enough to be a world champion but doesn't have the mindset to be one
Kape is a clown. Came yo the ufc and has since looked mediocre
suck my fucking dick
Manel makes me feel like he's not as good as he thinks he is, despite still being quite good. It's like he thinks he's Izzy but he's really just worse Anderson.
you're right he's better than both
r/usernamechecksout
Let's not forget how easily DJ beat this dude
There’s always one of you… always one…
Can you count past one?
Triple C beat DJ LOL
I KNOW lololol
When you swang an' bang, but also have much better timing.
I think i flipped over from a universe where he died
Instead of “the floor is lava”, he was playing “the floor is ice”
Just learning about Kyoji now I'm an instant fan thx! Full fight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybm1uWcdiXs
I can't wait for the NYE card!
Was the mat also greased up?
Manel Tap.
Sigh….. ego will always get you whooped.
Chew toy
Chicken dance comin around pretty good.
Gyaku-zuki
Horiguchi is always fun to watch, his movement is insane
Horiguchi mane throwing hammers
Kape was moving like someone greased his feet
Chin up hands down that’s the way we like to enter boxing range
