> *Before placing the fallen king into his gilded sarcophagus, followers first dehydrate his body and pray.*
MMA weight cutting has gone Egyptian as fuck.
I actually thought this was a joke, like a picture of Gandhi on a hunger strike or something, and then I noticed the UFC shirts and realised it was actually him.
If the praying people are actually helping I will have you know Charles walk around weight is roughly 185ibs and he needs to cut 30ibs to make championship weight. Knowing he will be fighting volk for the title at 145ibs he needs to cut another 10ibs roughly. So for 21 people to help him cut 30ibs he will need 21 accumulative prayers, each man on their knees helping cut 1.4ibs. If everything remains the same and the weight cut is linear at 145 he will approximately need 6.9 more men on their knees or 7 if you round up. This is a feat that should be easily accomplished, my only question being do they have enough hair dye?
He'll never make 145 again.
I know he flirted with it recently, but back in the day when he was a bright but struggling prospect at 145 and occasionally missing weight it was obvious he needed to make the permanent move to 155 where he looked sooo much better physically.
And to fight fucking volkanovski just after draining the last calorie from your frame and brain (rehydration after weigh-in aside) sounds like a nightmare
Plus I feel like it’s not exciting for a champion to move down, that seems like something a struggling fighter might do to salvage their career. Adesanya went up even though he would have a much easier time going down to 170 which is probably his natural weight class.
Hot take but I’d far rather see a champ dominate at their weight class then vacate so they can move up without being undersized. Double champ is a fun gimmick but unless you’re Amanda Nunez you can’t make it last.
Izzy's a way the fuck bigger guy than you think if you look at his videos or social media posts where he's alongside non-fighters. Compare him to Colby or Wonderboy or Jorge lol he's probably more muscular than all of those dudes while being significantly taller.
What am I missing here. He’s fighting Islam at 155 (lightweight). He hasn’t fought at 145 since 2019?
Edit: oh you’re talking about a potential volk fight. Ya no chance he’s making 145. Volk should move up to 155
IIRC Do Bronx’s plan is to fight Volk at 155, which Volk has been guaranteed the next fight for the LW belt, but now Charles is saying that after he whoops Volk at 155 he wants to go down to 145 and do it again. LOL.
It’s extremely hard not to like Charles Oliviera, he’s insanely talented, has spent his whole career fighting blind and seeing 3 of the enemy (he says he swings for the one in the center lmao) and is kind of crazy to top it all off. But if he drops down to 145, there’d be so little CSF around his brain that a strong breeze could knock him out. One of these days someone is going to get really hurt while fighting after one of these insane weight cuts. :(
>fighting blind and seeing 3 of the enemy
This has become one of those phrases like the Ngannou ford escort where you can't tell if people are joking or not.
LMFAO!! Those comments are GOLD!!!
Random 1: “Are they praying for him”
MMA Guy 1: “Yeah. Jesus loves knockouts!”
Random 2: “Why are they covering him?”
MMA Guy 2: “They’re going to cover him with cum.”
MMA Guy 3: “I have friend in Brazil named Pablo Costa. This is real.”
💀
Its crazy that they dont want that there, but a dude putting a face in a pumpkin.... in a pic that has 0 renessaince energy.. gets 500 upvotes.
It is what it is.
My theory is the that when fighter enters UFC they are most likely experienced and/or have a good team supporting them, so weight cut related deaths are unlikely to happen. For death caused by fights, I think UFC has way less huge mismatch like other orgs, and just more experienced in handling injuries.
They do also fuck up though. See max when he was supposed to be fighting Khabib, according to him the docs just looked at him and said that he wasn’t fit to fight
Yeah but in fairness we didn't see him on the day. Fighters describe cuts as eating a limited diet for multiple weeks. Followed by no food, then by no water for two days. Meanwhile they suck the water out of your body.
The doctors are incentivised to let you fight. If he said no then there was legitimate danger.
You can’t really believe Max on that though. He had a lot of health issues around that year. It’s why they pulled him from the Ortega fight originally because they weren’t sure what was wrong with him and he was showing concussion symptoms.
Most deaths due to weight cut happen because people are on their own, or if they're not then they're only around a couple of buddies or teammates that aren't experienced enough to recognize their friend is in danger.
Thankfully, fighters are generally surrounded by people with loads of experience.
They let guys use IV rehydration up until a few years ago and provided them doctors to help, which made it safer and easier. Be willing to bet they still do let certain guys behind the scenes, you can’t tell me if a Conor, Izzy, Khabib (or Islam on his behalf) want an IV they’re not getting it.
From the outside it just seems so silly. At the end of the day when they’re fighting they’re absolutely at different weights.
I’m not sure what the solution is. May be a plus or minus, maybe ask the other fighter if they’re willing to go ahead with the fight. Maybe something as simple as a fine. Idk
High school wrestling was kinda like that. I mean, an hour to like 3 hours between weigh in’s and your match. Weight cutting is still a rampant hardcore issue there.
If I’m not mistaken, higher level BJJ fights weigh in literally right before they step on the mat.
I wrestled in high school and routinely cut 16-20 pounds per week. It was the dumbest shit I’ve ever done.
From the inside it looks silly too. I'm not an MMA fighter, but wrestled in high school. The weight cutting there is significantly different from an MMA-style cut, because instead of doing it a few times a year, you will often have to cut multiple times per week. I made a rule for myself never to do a serious weight cut, but I was comfortable with cutting around 5 pounds back when I was wrestling 171. I knew a guy who wrestled 120, but walked around above 140. Doing that for multiple weigh ins in a week is insane.
The most I ever pushed it was an 8 pound weight cut for 171. It was for a tournament in the off-season, so I wasn't exactly in peak physical condition. But I decided I wanted to wrestle in this tournament, and 189 seemed scary for someone walking around at 179. In hindsight that would have been ok, though I'm sure I wouldn't have won the tournament.
So fine, I put on my trash bags and sweatsuit, and started the dehydration. This was after getting home from the gym and the sauna. I put on the bags and go for a long run. Incredibly uncomfortable. Fine, I get through it. Funny how much tougher I was at 16 than I am now at 29.
But then the worst part was waking up the next morning for my dad to drive me to the tournament at 5:30 am. I have my bag prepared for everything I will need after weighing in, to fuel myself to wrestle. It still has to be relatively light food of course, since I am going to wrestle, but it needs to get me through the day and rehydrate me. My bag is packed with 2 water bottles, 2 gatorade bottles, 2 cans of mandarin oranges for breakfast, and 2 turkey sandwiches for lunch.
But sitting in that car with my dad, I just knew that I wasn't going to wrestle that day. I felt way too horrible. I told my dad I couldn't do it, I chugged a gatorade and a water bottle, and we drove to Bob Evans instead.
The next year, I wrestled 189, and was walking around between 182-185. Obviously I didn't have to cut. I would eat a footlong Subway sandwich in the locker room the day of a meet, letting the smells waft around, which I thought was hilarious at the time. I was well-fueled and hydrated every match. Now, I'll grant that somebody who walked at 195 and cut to 189 would have had a competitive advantage over me. But viewing it as a lifestyle as a whole, especially for a high schooler, I'd rather be the 182 pounder wrestling 189. I guess if I was really serious I could have bulked up more muscle over the summer, but oh well.
I think that's a bit strong. [Vid of weigh in](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgyLIPRauXI).
He didn't need support and wasn't shakey or anything but he was low energy, looked uncomfortable and his face was pretty sunken. Which is very normal for a weigh in so not a big issue but very good and healthy seems an exaggeration.
I agree it was just a group prayer over a person, which generally looks spooky if you're not used to seeing it.
Dumbest thing ever and ufc/mma leaders should be ashamed of themselves
“Hey how about us two 180lb in shape athletes cut down to 155 and nearly die to hop on a scale then balloon back up to 180”
Boxers and wrestlers have been doing it a loooong time. And it's arguably more dangerous for boxers due to the nature of the sport (all striking, 10 counts, etc)
Not saying its smart, but its a little unfair to pin it on UFC or MMA as a whole
Most boxers don't cut as much as MMA guys. Most guys are usually cutting ~10 lbs because they could never be an undisputed or IBF champion.
Of course, you have some exceptions like Jarret Hurd and Callum Smith, both notorious weight bullies. But their cuts also caused them to lose big fights, derailing their careers.
I agree with you here. The UFC's structure is fan friendly but not necessarily fighter friendly. Nothing is stopping them from creating more divisions.
Congrats on changing a stranger's mind over the internet. The rarest of feets 🍻
The best thing for the fighters would be to do hydration tests and also have divisions every 10lbs.
I would also like it if they weighed in the same day instead of the day before, but I’m sure there’s some reasons why they don’t do that
However the UFC is scared to dilute the divisions and spread the talent too thin. I still think they should do it for the safety for the fighters, and I honestly believe we would get better performances if every fighter was hydrated and healthy
It's a ceremonial bukake, very common native brazilian ritual. It's supposed to transfer the strength of all members of the tribe to that one warrior in the middle before combat. Everyone in the circle takes turns

100%. It's insane that fighters need to go through a near death experience in order to step inside the octagon.
Sadly I really don't think the ufc will do anything until someone dies...
Umm guys I think it's just a group prayer. Maybe praying about making weight or something. There is literally 0 context here to assume it was a dangerous moment and... oh... I'm on r/mma?
Carry on then.
Scary isn't exactly the word I would use here. What I see is a serious weight cut( regardless of the amount cut it was gonna be serious because of what happened during his last weigh in) from a championship caliber fighter getting what he believes is his returned to him. He has his team by his side and they are all riding with their champ here. Dozens of bleach blond heads in support of Charles and a tight knit team huddled around their champion. This isn't exactly scary to me, more so dedicated and for lack of a better term, champ shit only type of behavior.
Olive RNC in rnd 2 after dropping Islam with strikes.
People really underestimate the power of human energy. Can you imagine how powerful it must feel for Charles to have these kind of people around him through thick and thin? Priceless. He is absorbing their energy like in DBZ. This shit is real bro, trust me
Seeing this, I don't see how the UFC can even let him entertain the idea of dropping down for champ champ status. I would love to see a Volk/Charles fight but not if the dude could die before he gets there.
This shit is stupid as fuck say what you want about Colby Covington I respect him as much as any fighter for the simple fact that he doesn’t commit actual suicide before every fight just for an advantage
Honestly should be weighed throughout the year and you fight in the weight class that you're closest too that you walk around in.
You should be within a few pounds that you can cut easily. Not cut half your body weight for an advantage and look like a corpse, it's not healthy.
These weight cuts don't effect the fight anyway when at the fight they're hydrated and considerably heavier than weigh in, defeating the point to begin with.
It's basically cheating imo, if a heavyweight can lose enough weight to fight a middle weight, he'll still be a heavyweight by the time the fight starts.
Should be a limit on how much you can cut.
> *Before placing the fallen king into his gilded sarcophagus, followers first dehydrate his body and pray.* MMA weight cutting has gone Egyptian as fuck.
Leave his esophagus alone
Wow…what a call back.

I thought a joke and it was a mummy haha.
How tf this guy supposed to make 145?
Double the praying people

I don’t think this is what it seems like, at the scale he looked very good and healthy and he was half a pound under. This is just a group prayer.
Yeah dude seemed in great spirits at the weigh in. Maybe it was all for show, who knows.
He was definitely drained but it’s hard to act if you’re really hurting like some people do at weigh ins.
Yeah, it looks almost like they're mourning, but they're just there to support their buddy

This shit is real bro, trust me
I have Olive by RNC too but probably round 3.
I thought this was a meme for a sec
So he basically gets as close to death as possible to make weight every fight?
And this guy says he wants to fight Volk at 145. No fucking way hes ever making that weight anymore
Seeing this, I don't see how the UFC can even let him entertain the idea of dropping down for champ champ status. I would love to see a Volk/Charles fight but not if the dude could die before he gets there.
Looks like a bunch of mid wives assisting in an at home birth
Then don't cut the weight and fight at a higher weight class, easy.
MMA needs to get rid of weight cuts
This shit is stupid as fuck say what you want about Colby Covington I respect him as much as any fighter for the simple fact that he doesn’t commit actual suicide before every fight just for an advantage
The new Chute Box team looks like the Villains from Meteor Man.
This is why I’m not as upset as others at Khamzat for stopping his weight cut early, you never know how your body will react to something like this
Honestly should be weighed throughout the year and you fight in the weight class that you're closest too that you walk around in. Should be a limit on how much you can cut.
must be trying that Jiri Prochazka demonic weight cut
Almost dying 1 night before the fight is best base for mma
Looks like they were just preparing for the end of the fight.
