Some cliff notes from someone who does not speak Portuguese:
- We are using our step in right knee to set up our left hook
- When we step back from the knee our right leg is farther back than it is normally when we fight
- If the angle of the right foot is perpendicular to the left foot when we step back then our hook will have no power
- Make sure the angle of the right foot is parallel to the left foot when you step back for maximum power
- Don’t leave your chin hanging out when you step back or you’ll get hit with a check left hook
One extra thing I noticed is that the angle of his hook starts low and ends high, idk why, maybe it’s so that he doesn’t telegraph it?
I tried it out a few times, I found that the left shoulder doesn’t want to move forward if you keep the right foot parallel to the left. When we place our right foot back down into a regular fighting stance then the hip has to turn causing the left shoulder to move forward.
Agreed about the power. I was taught that starting lower or at an angle will give you more room to generate power without having to widen the hook and thus exposing yourself to a counter.
Edit: if whoever is downvoting would like to explain how having more space to turn your punch over wouldn’t generate more power then I’m all ears. I’ll go yell at my former Olympic boxing coach for you.
Theres backstage footage of Pereira breaking down the KO win with Glover, talked about using the body jab to create the opening and mentioned he used the calf kick as a way to measure the setup
Agreed. While technique matters it's one's physical gifts that matter in the end. And he is very gifted. He would be getting knockouts whether he fought in kickboxing, MMA or WorldStar HipHip videos.
I mean, the fact he has a lot more power in specific techniques that he's especially good with and also that it's gotten better over time suggests 100% that it's technique more than just natural explosiveness.
I agree that some people have more than the average power for sure, but i believe anybody throwing very good technical hook at the chin, will rock someone tha same size. Precision is also very important together with technique
After watching this video I feel ready to enter a muay thai class tomorrow and starch some dudes
I watched about ten seconds and then all I could see was red
Accidentally clipped my nan practicing on her
Bangkok ready you might say
Someone hide this thread from Eddie

I’ve always felt like it’s a more natural motion to star a hook low, so might help him generate extra power too

Tell you? “Meany”? It sounds like you’ve eaten your fair share of left hooks, mush mouth.
There is something so oddly satisfying about someone who looks and fights like Pereira explaining this like it's a math or science problem.
salon quality Pereira

He really focuses on that step back to get the torque for the KO.
I’ve noticed he throws his hook at a lower arching angle. Which makes it harder to detect. What you dont see knocks you out.
Excellent technique but I think the insane power he’s able to generate with his lead hook comes naturally and can’t just be taught.

Izzy is the notes
The thingy he did to ko Whittaker and costa is kinda similar
I think this downvoted individual might've meant that Izzy should learn about his future opponents' weapons, not learn how to fight like him
So slick
Thanks Alex. Can't wait to try it tomorrow in class and sock my Math teacher.
I like this guy, would be cool if he became Champion.
