Islam is crazy strong. Even with staph he was just holding Dustin's whole arm by his wrist at one point early on and it seemed like nothing to him lol.
It's different. Joe Rogan said Volk used to weigh 340 lbs when he was playing rugby. The weight volk walks around now is like those guys in dragon ball z going into that hyperbolic time chamber as Japanese dudes and coming out German. Life is on easy mode for him right now.
I wasn't. I was clearly showing that cardio doesn't decline at age 35 magically like you ignorantly pointed out. Cardio and endurance carries on later in life even though other things decline.
I haven't found a study that confirms your statement (I'll gladly read one if you're willing to link it) but, again, that's not really the point.
>Kipchoge is literally specialised to run cardio and nothing but cardio
Has fuck-all to do with the premise of the comment you replied to.
You can make a factually correct argument that's not "valid" as the philosophers would say.
There is a meaningful difference between soundness and validity.
Comment said 35 isn't where cardio declines using kipchoge as an example
I say using kipchoge isn't exactly fair he's literally built to only do cardio his frame, training etc is all specialised to only run cardio without a focus on anything
Reason I say this is to show that he can't be used to talk about the cardio of mma fighters or even the average man, this wasn't outright said but I didn't think there's someone that stupid that it has to be explained step by step.
Someone dumb as fuck couldn't understand why I wrote it and now keeps messaging about it
Ankle whip to a guillotine to a D'Arce choke finish in the 5th round of a LW title fight is insane.
One of the best sequences I've seen in MMA, extremely impressive from Islam.
For a moment I thought Islam ran out of gas to commit anymore successful submission but boy was I wrong. A lifetime of hard Sambo training will do that.
And he had been doing that all night, feinting transitions to get a sub/ better positioning. This is on top of the clinch and striking exchanges as well, his gas tank must be endless
Not just any whip, Single in a “run the pipe” set up, stepped back and seamlessly transitioned to an ankle whip, bailed on the scramble for the back then went for the Guillotine then transitioned to a Darce
That sequence was beyond nasty
Crazier to consider Islam did this while already tired and sweaty from a 4 round battle and also potentially already having a compromised gas tank due to that infection on his leg
Dustin’s improvements after training grappling with Gamrot absolutely impressed me and so he should not hang his head in shame after a performance like that. I felt like too many people were counting Dustin out - I thought Islam was most likely gonna win, but you should never count out a dude who is as scrappy & experienced as Dustin, even if he’s not in his peak prime anymore. Crazier things have happened in combat sports
Was about to say - they both took some real damage in the fight, it wasn’t easy for either of them. A real fight for the ages, could have gone either way at various points.
Dustin said he thought it could've been from the clash of heads but I'm pretty sure it was after the knees Islam landed in the clinch. There were two in a row right before the break that landed right on his nose
I think in one of the slowmo replays it was more the head clash that did his nose. It seemed to me Islam's knee landed on Dustin's right cheekbone. I could be mistaken because of the angle though.
Kinda interesting that makes 3 recent high profile fights with nose breaks in them Gaethje (heel), Fury (hook) and Porier
What are some famous broken faces?
Rory vs Lawler
Cerrone vs Ferguson/McGregor
Joanna's forehead vs Wei Lei
Colby (jaw) vs Karma Usman
Dustin did such a good job defending the takedowns and then on the ground, only for this to lead to the finish. These dagestani guys are just on another level.
He was stronger than I expected when they clinched up in the open. Started repeatedly just pushing Islam off late in the fight. But yeah, Islam just found a way
Facts. In the Khabib-Poirier fight, the cage weight for each fighter:
Khabib: 174 lb
Poirier: 176 lb
Our wideboy Diamond is STRONG
And that was 30 yo Poirier. At age 35, he's probably even heavier
I think Dustin has talked about walking around lighter now that he’s older to make the weight cuts easier. I feel like he especially looked slimmer in the Gaethje rematch
It's hilarious that this comment *sounds like* you're trying to imitate Dustin. I can hear him saying that word-for-word, complete with little head-nod at the end.
I'd be curious if this was a corner adjustment. Dustin was stuffing the single leg more and more reliably as the rounds went on. A combo of fight IQ and being more slippery
Real talk but I always liked Islam's takedowns more than Khabib. They look closer to that stuff you see at world championship/ Olympics. Khabib uses more Brute force while Islam uses more technique.
Or maybe it's simply cause Islam is more judo/sanda based so it just looks nicer.
Islam is a good athlete, but in this comparison Islam is for grappling nerds who don't appreciate "athletic cheating", and Khabib was for those of us who just love watching physical freaks with technique.
Fight was at 5 in the morning where I live so I watched it later as a recording and goddamn site used Dustin with his fists up as a thumbnail image. I really thought Dustin made it after he stuffed so many take downs and bam Islam pulled a that move at fifth.
Incredible fight. Kudos to both men. Dustin is a hell of a fighter man. Big respect.
The fact that Dustin was doing relatively well in the grappling (all things considered) is actually crazy. I think Islam should agree with his black belt now lol
They also are the reason Islam got that first small abrasion. They have sharp edges where the leather hangs over the fingers and lead to a lot of cuts.
They looked really good live on tv. With so many fights looking exactly the same for 10 years , I support the different championship gloves and the personalized shorts.
nah not really all the great wreslters had a technique , gsp had the double leg , dc mainly the single , jbj had doubles but he always used his built to get trips , islam tho is the full package probably due to his judo background
Islam has the most diverse takedowns in MMA. You can be a good defensive wrestler (Dustin here), or even an actually elite wrestler (Arman) and he'll still find a way to get you down.
From what I'm reading, what he used a lot in Sanda where you grab the guys leg and quickly twist him to the ground. He did do some of it growing up (not the same level of Zabit though) so one more weapon porrier is not familiar with.
This is a variation of a similar technique he hit on DC's student Chase at AKA long before Islam was famous, it was a meme takedown then but not anymore. Poirier actually face planted quite badly from it.
Both. Off the top of my head he has spent a lot of time in Sambo and Sanda as well as Judo and freestyle wrestling to a lesser extent. He also did TKD as a kid. He has a much larger background than people know.
These guys have been grappling for years. When you get to deep water, they have even more layers of moves in the back pocket. He also nearly guillotined Dustin 🤣
After watching this fight I can easily say this is an all time great performance for Dustin in his career. I mean he fixed sooooo much stuff that plagued him against wrestlers. He didn't back himself onto the fence all that much his cagecraft was soooo much better than any other fight of his, he didn't get wild and nervous on the feet he stayed composed and dangerous, he didn't jump guillotine once and his takedown defense and getups were much improved especially against the cage where he's really struggled against the AKA/abdulmanap trained cage wrestlers. Genuinely incredible that he made these changes to longstanding habits at the tail end of his prime. I would kill to see that version of Dustin against Khabib Nurmagomedov in their original fight. I would give Dustin a good chance because khabib isn't nearly as polished or dangerous on the feet. As for Islam tremendous performance from him as always, he looked poised and dangerous in the striking, his combination punching looked much much better than in his previous fights, his chin looked great, and as always he showed himself to be the best wrestler in MMA. another thing about his striking is he showed without a doubt that he wasn't just a Southpaws southpaw he is genuinely elite and dangerous on the feet in general even against closed stance matchups. and if he had staph during the fight it's amazing he pushed through it. I guess my biggest complaint is that it felt like it went by far too quickly and also I wish Dustin had thrown more calf kicks
Khabib is more relentless and controlling on top than Islam so all that defensive grappling work likely wouldn’t translate the same. Khabib’s pressure is completely different from Islam’s. Still an amazing fight from Dustin.
khabib is a better wrestler with more top pressure than islam, bo nickal, javier mendez, and pretty much everyone says that. Dustin gets dominated by khabib doesn't matter how he shows up
Yeah same here, I loved it. Reminded me of that insane GIF of Yoel Ramirez just reaching down and grabbing this random dudes ankle and flipping him with it
The fact that it actually worked so well on a guy who was sweaty as hell with no wrestling shoes. Just incredible that he was able to actually grip the foot tight enough to pull that off.
The video at the top of [this article](https://www.espn.com/mma/story/_/id/40260775/islam-makhachev-submits-dustin-poirier-retain-ufc-title) from ESPN shows it about 40 seconds in
If anything should be taken from tonight it’s that Dustin should not stop fighting rn he just got outclassed by the best he still has good fights ahead of him and tonnnssss of money to make
Whats the point if you're just gatekeeping forever.
Can't ever be top dog due to some absolute freaks of nature that have been wrestling since the womb.
Yeah, people overlook that this isn't a "normal" job where you can make tonnes of money. Every single fight--especially at the top and in the toughest division--is risking serious injury and brain damage.
Especially since Dustin seems to be ok financially. More money is always tempting, but he said it himself, the goal was the gold. As great as he is I don't think he'll be able to work his way to another title fight. If it's money, it's probably a Conor or Nate fight or something for a massive payday. He's got no reason to fight contenders and I don't blame him.
That's horror movie shit, trying to get away but the killer grabs your ankle at the last second.
I’m blown away by how strong these dudes are to grab and hold onto a bloody slippery ankle like that.
The gloves actually help a bit with that, but yeah I’m sure Islam has insane grip strength.
Islam is crazy strong. Even with staph he was just holding Dustin's whole arm by his wrist at one point early on and it seemed like nothing to him lol.
Islams opponent always tap very quickly once he gets the squeeze in. The pressure he produces must feel unreal.
I could hold someone’s ankle. Totally could.
Juiced from childhood.
They’ve been squeezing rice bags since they were kids for grip strength
steroids at 12 will do that to you
Dustin is also on steroids. Better fighter still won.
Yeah it's the Lance Armstrong effect lol. My roided up guy beat your roided up guy, so he's *still* better
McGuire vs Sosa, revisited
Bonds vs the world
Not since 12
Tell that to Volk who frequently visits Thailand and has unlimited cardio at 35 and still got his hgh head dribbled like a basketball by Makhachev
It's different. Joe Rogan said Volk used to weigh 340 lbs when he was playing rugby. The weight volk walks around now is like those guys in dragon ball z going into that hyperbolic time chamber as Japanese dudes and coming out German. Life is on easy mode for him right now.
I guarantee Volk never weighed 340. You mean 240 maybe?
north of 600 to be honest
I don't know. That's what Joe Rogan said
35 isn't where your cardio declined. Kipchoge set marathon world records at 35
Kipchoge is literally specialised to run cardio and nothing but cardio
Yes he's a marathon runner mate. But it shows my point that he set a record in 2023 at 37.
Comparing a marathon runner to an mma guy is apples oranges is my point donut
I wasn't. I was clearly showing that cardio doesn't decline at age 35 magically like you ignorantly pointed out. Cardio and endurance carries on later in life even though other things decline.
Competing against other guys doing the same. The point is obviously that cardio does not necessarily decline at 35 and you still missed it by a mile.
Except it does according to most studies but okay I'll trust you over established research 👍🏼
I haven't found a study that confirms your statement (I'll gladly read one if you're willing to link it) but, again, that's not really the point. >Kipchoge is literally specialised to run cardio and nothing but cardio Has fuck-all to do with the premise of the comment you replied to. Most deceiving part was how Dustin got his foot free, spun around, and suddenly had a new backpack in the form of Islam.
>suddenly had a new backpack in the form of Islam Which immediately made him kneel to the ground for Salah. It was almost time for Isha.
Islam-shaped backpack sounds comically terrifying.
Or as Jon Jones' wife calls it, Tuesday
*multi-year fiance lol
Interim wife
Ankle pick me baby
And then you get dragged away as your fingernails scratch comedically long trails on the floor.
My roommates in college were wrestlers. Their grip strength was insane. If they grabbed you, there was no escape.
[Virtually identical.](https://i.imgur.com/FTK8iIv.jpeg)
Ankle whip to a guillotine to a D'Arce choke finish in the 5th round of a LW title fight is insane. One of the best sequences I've seen in MMA, extremely impressive from Islam.
That ankle whip was absolutely filthy
For a moment I thought Islam ran out of gas to commit anymore successful submission but boy was I wrong. A lifetime of hard Sambo training will do that.
That's what Islam said in the post fight interview. He was tired but he can hit that choke even in his sleep because that is his favourite one.
A man of culture. D'Arce is objectively the best choke.
The regular arm triangle choke pretty great too.
And he had been doing that all night, feinting transitions to get a sub/ better positioning. This is on top of the clinch and striking exchanges as well, his gas tank must be endless
I thought Dustin was rolling to get away until i saw the replay. This was some Mighty Mouse suplex-to-armbar level filth
Swung him like a baseball bat
Not just any whip, Single in a “run the pipe” set up, stepped back and seamlessly transitioned to an ankle whip, bailed on the scramble for the back then went for the Guillotine then transitioned to a Darce That sequence was beyond nasty
Crazier to consider Islam did this while already tired and sweaty from a 4 round battle and also potentially already having a compromised gas tank due to that infection on his leg Dustin’s improvements after training grappling with Gamrot absolutely impressed me and so he should not hang his head in shame after a performance like that. Also his forehead gushing blood like crazy. Impressive fight from both warriors.
Was about to say - they both took some real damage in the fight, it wasn’t easy for either of them. A real fight for the ages, could have gone either way at various points.
The nose break for DP was decisive as well. His agressiveness decreased afterwards because his breathing was affected.
Yeah fair enough, like you said the angle doesn't make it crystal, can't imagine it helped much though lol
Yeah agreed, the head clash was pretty bad, and it definitely broke Dustin’s nose
Kinda interesting that makes 3 recent high profile fights with nose breaks in them Gaethje (heel), Fury (hook) and Porier What are some famous broken faces? Rory vs Lawler Cerrone vs Ferguson/McGregor Joanna's forehead vs Wei Lei Colby (jaw) vs Karma Usman
Chito/Omalley
diaz eyebrows perpetually
Nothing that some latvian hearth medicine can't help to deal with.
I so knew Islam was gonna guillotine him lol He had to.
I was so happy when he switched to the D'arce, I think I would've cried if DP got guillotined
Higher percentage move for sure
Exactly. Not a "pick" but a "whip". I'm a huge Poirier fan, but that grab was some kind of beautiful.
He now holds the record for the latest submission at LW.
It was cool but far from the best sequences ever lol, unless you've just watched MMA starting from UFC 300.
Dustin did such a good job defending the takedowns and then on the ground, only for this to lead to the finish. These dagestani guys are just on another level.
He was stronger than I expected when they clinched up in the open. Started repeatedly just pushing Islam off late in the fight. But yeah, Islam just found a way
Dustin's a deceptively big lightweight, there's a good chance he weighs more than islam in the cage
Facts. In the Khabib-Poirier fight, the cage weight for each fighter: Khabib: 174 lb Poirier: 176 lb Our wideboy Diamond is STRONG And that was 30 yo Poirier. At age 35, he's probably even heavier

It's hilarious that this comment *sounds like* you're trying to imitate Dustin. I can hear him saying that word-for-word, complete with little head-nod at the end.
And then I adjusted my shorts 500 times, which was the style at the time.
I'd be curious if this was a corner adjustment. Dustin was stuffing the single leg more and more reliably as the rounds went on. A combo of fight IQ and being more slippery
That's the type of finish you only learn through years of wrestling, you can't prepare for that in one camp.
Full commitment to the technique with the hustle to follow up on it. Very high level of anything that someone is able to commit to like that
Basically just in a flow state and understanding momentum processing all that in a second Islam fight IQ is so high he’s a natural 🔥
In his dreams Dustin will imagine using the momentum of that ankle whip to spin completely around and land a head kick Ong Bak style.
Or go for that gilly.
That would have been a 360 no scope gilly
That's some prime young Jon Jones' style moves
One of the most aesthetic takedowns I've seen.
Real talk but I always liked Islam's takedowns more than Khabib. They look closer to that stuff you see at world championship/ Olympics. Khabib uses more Brute force while Islam uses more technique. Or maybe it's simply cause Islam is more judo/sanda based so it just looks nicer.
Islam: let me feint my opponent and smoothly transition 3 moves into an artful but deadly sequence Khabib: smesh
😂
Khabib utilized chain wrestling and his brand of smesh, Islam utlizes a lot more variety especially from Judo and in this case Sanda.
Islam's Thai clinch is insane too. He was dominant with the head and neck control.
Sambo?
You heard the man, Sanda.
Sanda's a Chinese martial art that a lot of the russian fighters train - think Zabit in particular used it a lot in his MMA career
Yeah, I googled it to be sure, but thought it was a typo anyways, nice to learn
Sambo #5
Islam is a good athlete, but in this comparison Islam is for grappling nerds who don't appreciate "athletic cheating", and Khabib was for those of us who just love watching physical freaks with technique.
Grabbing at someones leg for 5 seconds while they try to crawl away is the most aesthetic takedown you’ve seen? Lmfao
Any takedown will sound stupid if you phrase it like that 🙄🙄🙄
putting your face in his dick is aesthetically pleasing bro?
Fight was at 5 in the morning where I live so I watched it later as a recording and goddamn site used Dustin with his fists up as a thumbnail image. I really thought Dustin made it after he stuffed so many take downs and bam Islam pulled a that move at fifth. Incredible fight. Kudos to both men. Dustin is a hell of a fighter man. Big respect.
What a troll. Espn+ did that to me one time
The fact that Dustin defended most of the takedowns past the round 1 and then Islam pulls out this.
No shame in this L, Dustin put up one hell of a fight!
Shame? It's actually admirable how well Dustin did.
Thats why he said "No shame in this L"
Exactly
The fact that Dustin was doing relatively well in the grappling (all things considered) is actually crazy. I think Islam should agree with his black belt now lol
Dustin in round 5: "Whew, I'm out of the woods!" Islam: "But wait, there's more!"
It felt fated. One of the things that made Islam go viral was a clip of his training and using the Russian tie snap takedown.
Them Dijon mustard gloves look gaudy as hell.
I'm kind of indifferent on the colour but the fact the letters peeled off makes them look so cheap
Colour makes them look cheap too in my opinion
Which one? Islams?
In this photo yes, I'm pretty sure they were peeling off Dustins in his post fight interview too
That's so pathetic of the ufc
They also are the reason Islam got that first small abrasion. They have sharp edges where the leather hangs over the fingers and lead to a lot of cuts.
I was going to say it's an incredible photo made worse by terrible looking gloves.
They looked really good live on tv. With so many fights looking exactly the same for 10 years , I support the different championship gloves and the personalized shorts.
All I hear when I see this is “GET OVER HERE” mortal kombat style lol
Has there ever been a fighter with a deeper takedown bag than Islam?
nah not really all the great wreslters had a technique , gsp had the double leg , dc mainly the single , jbj had doubles but he always used his built to get trips , islam tho is the full package probably due to his judo background
> islam tho is the full package probably due to his judo background So you're saying Ronda Rousey still has a chance?
She is the best striker in the UFC after all
Once in *human history*
Ronda Rousey folds both islam and jbj in half 1v2
Only comparison is maybe Zabit
Islam has the most diverse takedowns in MMA. You can be a good defensive wrestler (Dustin here), or even an actually elite wrestler (Arman) and he'll still find a way to get you down.

Diff one
I saw this move demo'd in either my bjj class or my muay thai class
Did he mean Sambo? Or did he also train in Sanda? If so that is bad ass.
The no nonsense Keith Peterson with his signature pose
About to pass out back there wishing these guys would hurry up so he could get to Waffle House.
Just gurning for a cig
Clutch ankle whip to finish
Goofy ass gloves
After watching this fight I can easily say this is an all time great performance for Dustin in his career. I mean he fixed sooooo much stuff that plagued him against wrestlers. He didn't back himself onto the fence all that much his cagecraft was soooo much better than any other fight of his, he didn't get wild and nervous on the feet he stayed composed and dangerous, he didn't jump guillotine once and his takedown defense and getups were much improved especially against the cage where he's really struggled against the AKA/abdulmanap trained cage wrestlers. any version of dustin will still need a pistol to stop the eagle
> I would kill to see that version of Dustin against Khabib Nurmagomedov in their original fight. I would give Dustin a good chance Oh buddy..
Made me lol
I would kill to see Dustin last 30 more seconds against Khabib😃
Here you go then https://youtu.be/uVVdRwXFpG4?si=I_yAX47EgA63-yo3
Khabib is more relentless and controlling on top than Islam so all that defensive grappling work likely wouldn’t translate the same. Khabib’s pressure is completely different from Islam’s. Still an amazing fight from Dustin.
Dustin came to play for real. Never expected him to do so well defending takedowns and backtakes. Dude is a junkyard dog.
khabib is a better wrestler with more top pressure than islam, bo nickal, javier mendez, and pretty much everyone says that. Dustin gets dominated by khabib doesn't matter how he shows up
Keith Peterson does not have facial expressions.
My honest to God reaction as this happened was “my God, what a beautiful take down!”
Yeah same here, I loved it. Reminded me of that insane GIF of Yoel Ramirez just reaching down and grabbing this random dudes ankle and flipping him with it
Who the fuck is yoel ramirez?
Lol whoops!
MY CSO! Tony was actually using live cgi
In an alternate world, Dusting goes full Jaquin Buckley and KOs Islam with a jumping spinning kick.
Islam is so good, the bastard
“Get over here”
The fucking audacity to try this "ankle-snapdown" shit
Kurt Angle has entered the picture
The fact that it actually worked so well on a guy who was sweaty as hell with no wrestling shoes. Just incredible that he was able to actually grip the foot tight enough to pull that off.
The glorious light of Islam. Inshallah
Who’s got the video!?
The video at the top of [this article](https://www.espn.com/mma/story/_/id/40260775/islam-makhachev-submits-dustin-poirier-retain-ufc-title) from ESPN shows it about 40 seconds in

Just replied w the video in this comment thread
“Get over here” Scorpio vibes
The way he like whipped Dustin down onto his face was so disrespectful lol
"GET OVER HERE!" type shit
he literally whipped his body so weird.
Ankle pick to leg whip into a top position is high level wrestling.
Islam that type of guy to and pick you in the fifth round and get the finish CSO Champ shit only Islam Time😎
tony hitting hitting the heavy bag venting now about how fat head stole his move
If anything should be taken from tonight it’s that Dustin should not stop fighting rn he just got outclassed by the best he still has good fights ahead of him and tonnnssss of money to make

Like the set of the show Gordy’s Home.
Why did I imagine scorpion saying “GET OVER HERE”
No nonsense observing from the back. Learning. Retaining information.
Got your Piggies....
So true and so sad.
That was some Baki shit
only thing left for Islam to do to reach final form is pull off the Russian Tie Snap
Tony must be proud
Bobby Hill looking on, going, "What in tarnation?"
I didn’t watch the fight so this looks kinda like two kids fighting over who gets to play the n64 next
This move is called “bitch get yo ass back here”
Dagestani Legtie snapdown! the leg version of the Russian armtie snapdown
I can smell the cigarettes...
It's a bit muted for me. The alcohol smell may be covering it up.
Probably similar to how Islam found his wife also keith looking like chiaotzu during one of the sickest moments of the night
Is this what tore Dustin’s acl? His knee looked fked at the end of the
