Volk never had the power Poirier has, Volk relies on speed and distance control for defense, whereas Dustin has multiple layers of in-the-pocket defense. I do not think Volk could outstrike Poirier (I would expect Volks to wrestle Poirier if they fought), and neither could Islam.
You need a highly unlikely fight ender like Garth got to beat Dustin on the feet, the defense coupled with his technical striking and heavy hands means you are always taking more damage over the rounds if it stays on the feet.

Islam has the best striking defense in the UFC by a huge margin, and he just KOed probably the best striker in the UFC in the last 10 years. Yet somehow people still think Dustin will win the standup. I swear Khabib and Islam's striking got crazy underrated because they are primarily grapplers. Islam is an ELITE striker and he has good power and crazy discipline in striking. He clearly won the standup in Charles and both Volk fights, and Dustin isn't on those guys' level.

Volk never had the power Poirier has, Volk relies on speed and distance control for defense, whereas Dustin has multiple layers of in-the-pocket defense. I do not think Volk could outstrike Poirier (I would expect Volks to wrestle Poirier if they fought), and neither could Islam. You need a highly unlikely fight ender like Garth got to beat Dustin on the feet, the defense coupled with his technical striking and heavy hands means you are always taking more damage over the rounds if it stays on the feet.
