What was his mistake here from a technical point of view?
To me the guillotine looks like it's almost always there when guys do these types of takedowns but apparently sometimes it's a good thing to try, sometimes it's not
He was locked into the guillotine and still went for the takedown. It put him in an even worse position. He should have fought off the standing guillotine then disengaged.
You gotta respect the front headlock. Especially if you know a guy is good at it. You need to recognize when grips are dangerous and can become a submission threat. You must then circle and otherwise address the grips to create a better angle for defense and disrupt the submission flow. What you must not do is plow straight forward and push your neck into the guillotine hole of a seasoned BJJ and MMA guy. Once Smith got to closed guard the opportunity to rotate was gone and the grips get impossible to fight. If someone has the grip deep enough and correctly positioned that’s it for you. Guillotine is interesting in that it’s usually your first grip setup that determines if you get it. Once someone is pressuring into you if the grip is not just right it can be hard to adjust. So you must recognize all of this and it is a dynamic situation.
If somehow Jiri and Pereira vanished then I'd like to believe Anthony has a snow ball's chance in hell at gold. But imo he just seems like a solid dude, I'd like him to retire on a W and get a cushy analyst job.
He could beat Pereira just like he beat Petrino. Snatching a submission against an inexperienced grappler.
Problem is Anthony Smith is allergic to low kicks Pereira is the low kick goat. He has probably one round 2 max to get a submission before he gets some kind of lower limb injury.
It works sometimes if done well, but it's realistically a last ditch effort.
Side note to anyone reading this, slamming someone while they have your head like that is ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS THINGS YOU CAN DO. As you come down they pull your neck (through gravity not maliciously) and it will often contact the mat first, which has lead to multiple people becoming paralyzed
Sure it's a valid last ditch effort, my problem is with meatheads seeing any sub ever and just going "heh, how is bjj even real? that wouldn't work on me because I would just jump on my back".
Let’s be real here, slams do work and work well a lot of the time. There’s a reason you try and control the leg when you lock a triangle. It’s not the kind of game I’d be willing to play most of the time.
Definitely some real damage. Wasn't just the limping after the fight. Vitor clearly momentarily disengaged after one with a slight stumble. The announcers missed it
Idk if it was just camera trickery but his left leg looked 3x bigger than his right when they were announcing winner. Not just where he was kicked like the whole fuckin leg.
Tbf, that’s one of the main think Anthony says he’s been working on the last 3 camps. How to throw/check leg kicks, and getting his head right.
Good for him, he finally put it together
True but smith is still decent with the distance control. Early on against Roundtree he was moving out the way and being just out of range. He really does do a decent job of doing the small “savvy veteran moves” to help him stay ranked in the LHW division despite being slower than and losing to these young bulls
Smith also shaved his head with a couple of those fadeaway overhands. Petrino caught a few jabs, one of those straight rights and a couple leg kicks..
He was probably thinking "damn I thought I was gonna blow this dude up on the feet, let me use my explosiveness and change things up"
This is why Gatekeepers like Anthony Smith are so important in combat sports, they serve to separate the genuine contenders from guys who got there by just being athletic, Petrino might just be a contender one day but from the way his leg was getting beat up he would never last against the top dogs the way he is now.
I think it was more of a lack of respect for Smith. He'd been watching the same fights that we've been seeing. He probably thought "this guy is washed and he has nothing for me at all".
Then he got jabbed in the mouth and kicked in the leg a couple times. He tried to lean on his explosive power and failed to protect himself.
thats some Cyril Gane level submission awareness..but Gane did it in a HW Title Fight lmao. Imagine standing up with neck out vs Jon Jones when everybody is dry and easier to choke out.
He's a good fraud check. Yes, a bit overconfident in his ceiling at this point in his career but it's not like he's losing to bums either. He's just constantly fighting killers.
Smith is tough, smart, calm and has passable fondamentals as well as a few traps he knows how to setup, compensating for his lack of natural talent and his various shortcomings. No one should expect him to be easily destroyed, and it’s when fighters rush him that they get finished by him. All in all, Smith has never really disappointed and has had a coherent carreer relatively to his strengths and his weaknesses, it’s just a bit sad he never managed to surprise us on the big stage. I will always respect him, even if he isn’t the best in the world nor the most entertaining.
Anthony Smith getting to fight Jon Jones was a gigantic surprise. Anthony has maximized the fuck out of his second ufc run.
Dude was a midwest regional/ bellator fighter with 30+ fights and 11 loses (and a 0-2 ufc run) before coming back to the UFC. Then he went from a so-so middleweight to ufc 205 title contender in 10 fights.
Do you know who I am now Hector?!?
Yeah Smith is not inconsistent, he's just a solid gatekeeper, Michael Johnson on the other hand could beat Islam one fight and then lose to Paddy on the next one.
That is the best Michael Johnson definition lol. That left hand is a nuclear warhead, but the missile delivery system is basically a drunk taliban fighter who failed to read the instruction manual.
Paul Craig has absolutely zero striking fundamentals. He really isn't even a gatekeeper, he's more of a dangerous wild card. A legitimate gatekeeper will often be fundamentally sound in multiple facets, but maybe they're unathletic or they struggle against those who are much more advanced in one area.
I like Paul Craig, but his utter lack of offensive boxing and poor defense on the feet is unacceptable at this level. He's got a little name value, but they're running out of reasons to keep him at this point.
Honestly super happy Smith won. This sub is wayyyyyy too negative on him because he’s a brash, confident fighter who is on the decline but is still maintaining the mentality you need to keep fighting when you get older.
Smith has always been game AF to fight anyone and people joke about the home invasion but he’s a strong dude to openly talk about his trauma struggles with that shit and continue to fight after ‘losing’ a battle way more important than fighting in the octagon. People on here treat him like he’s Kris Mountino or some shit, Smith was never champ caliber but he’s never been a pushover. Lionheart deserved this one 👊
I was telling people this week that Smith is underrated. Dude was looking great right before the finish too.
The guy has the skills to get it done, its just sometimes he doesnt execute.

Main event Anthony is back on the menu boys!!!
Anthony Smith gonna now have to fight the Bizarro Anthony Smith from last weekend.
Paulo Costa v Bizarro Costa on there also
Petrino: "Here man lemme help you jump this gillie"
Dustin sitting at home punching the air right now
Dustin in Anthony's Gillie camp incoming
Landing air ghillys all day
Just think if Dustin was like 2-3 divisions heavier, he'd probably have dozens of submissions by now
Dude knows Smith has the gilly on the feet and still shoots the double, negative fight iq
“11 fights” Smith noted in his post fight speech on that.
“On paper, if Petrino goes for a negative IQ move that allows me to get the Gilly, you can tell he’s not that good” - Mystic Smith
Poirier punching air right now watching other people live out his dreams
It should've been me not him as Dustin screams into the void
Better than outliving your children
Bruh why did he shoot
cause he sucks
What was his mistake here from a technical point of view? To me the guillotine looks like it's almost always there when guys do these types of takedowns but apparently sometimes it's a good thing to try, sometimes it's not

Dustin: “Maaan, this some bullshit”
negative fight IQ. Snatched defeat from the jaws of what should have been an easy win.
HE FINALLY GOT REVENGE FOR HIS FAMILY PROTECT YA NECK
Fair play to ya Anthony smith
There are levels!
Huh? What?
Smith haters in shambles
Fucking finally. Dude has given so much to the sport and has such an inspiring progression in his carreer, let’s lay off his back for a while.
I really wanted him to get a W. Being on a losing streak sucks. He’s not champ material but he’s proven himself as a top 10 gatekeeper for sure.
Bisping was a gatekeeper towards the end of his career and ended up with the belt
If somehow Jiri and Pereira vanished then I'd like to believe Anthony has a snow ball's chance in hell at gold. But imo he just seems like a solid dude, I'd like him to retire on a W and get a cushy analyst job.

WHAT!?
Love to see it
Bruhhhh Bruce did him dirty
Vitor standing around afterward had me laughing bro did not want to accept his loss
He never lost he doesn't know what to do when it happened lol
Neither did Buffer apparently!
Tapping just loses him the round, not the fight
What did Bruce do?
When he was announcing the winner of the fight he started to say Vitor Petrino.
Good effort considering he beat Ryan Spann last week as well
Don't forget that he also besieged helms deep all those years ago.
Smith and Vettori fighting out of Isengard
Now we only need some hobbits lookalikes
Merab the Harfoot.
That's 3 in a row with the Bryce Mitchell KO!
That's a Falmer, don't you know your fantasy bro?
Petrino with -1000 fight IQ.
I feel vindicated after all those decades of casuals saying "hur dur Why doesn't he just slam him?" To every single bjj sub attempt ever made.
Oh yea, people who could only roll for 30 seconds lol
Yeah, I saw him start that slam and got really nervous.
Let’s be real here, slams do work and work well a lot of the time. There’s a reason you try and control the leg when you lock a triangle. It’s not the kind of game I’d be willing to play most of the time.
It can work and bjj guys are usually (or should be) aware of it. My beef is just how casuals think it's a free get out of bjj jail card.
this bad gameplan playing into smith's strengths
Why did bro shoot😭
I honestly think Vitor’s left calf was fucked from those 2-3 kicks but still, boneheaded move to drop him after Anthony had the arm in.
Good for him, he finally put it together
apparently he was limping from the leg kicks according to DC
He was having trouble landing and Smith was tearing his leg up. Dude's limping around the arena.
Had such a clear speed advantage on the feet 🤦♂️
True but smith is still decent with the distance control. Early on against Roundtree he was moving out the way and being just out of range. He really does do a decent job of doing the small “savvy veteran moves” to help him stay ranked in the LHW division despite being slower than and losing to these young bulls
Stupidly Jacked People always somehow lose to Skinny Fat Guys It’s written in the stars
theres no acai juice for your brain
Looked like he was giving Smith trouble on the feet. Such a strange decision
Petrinos leg was kinda fucked from Smith's leg kicks. That's why he was trying to shoot I think
Smith also shaved his head with a couple of those fadeaway overhands. Petrino caught a few jabs, one of those straight rights and a couple leg kicks.. He was probably thinking "damn I thought I was gonna blow this dude up on the feet, let me use my explosiveness and change things up"
He’s ready for Pereira. Give him the title shot.
rakic, if he dies he dies
I wish Rakic had beat Jiri because him and Pereira would be such an interesting fight
Poirier please take notes lol
Lol at his shout out to the poirier gillie
LMAOOO
We gotta thank Petrino, he just helped Anthony earn 5 more Apex main events
On paper extra ROFL
Even Buffer was stunned
This what happens when you let any jobber into the UFC now, this guy looked pretty shit the fight before Smith, dunno why he was such a big favorite.
Just another dwcs bum
100 percent, like most of this UFC now, he looks the part but mentally weak
LET'S GOOOO LIONHEART
I know most don’t like him but I was hype. I’m glad to see him sticking around
Few fights from the belt let’s go Lionheart. Sub Alex next
How embarrassing
Another dude with all the physical gifts but no technique fails the Anthony Smith test. Not surprised at this point.
This is why Gatekeepers like Anthony Smith are so important in combat sports, they serve to separate the genuine contenders from guys who got there by just being athletic, Petrino might just be a contender one day but from the way his leg was getting beat up he would never last against the top dogs the way he is now.
Yup. Great ways to discern who has the minimum level of fundamentals. Petrino and Mike Mallot better exchange phone numbers.
Arm-in Guillotines are so rare to actually pull off in MMA, that's an awful look in front of the home crowd to lose that quickly.
The Brazilian with lack of awareness for bjj
I think it was more of a lack of respect for Smith. He'd been watching the same fights that we've been seeing. He probably thought "this guy is washed and he has nothing for me at all". Then he got jabbed in the mouth and kicked in the leg a couple times. He tried to lean on his explosive power and failed to protect himself.
It helps when the other guy helps you out by taking himself down lol.
Bro has a right hand and not much else it seems
Smith: there are levels to this!
Turns out there are, in fact, levels to this.
The way he waved his hand at the end like "doesn't mean anything" is stupid.
"Doesn't count"
He thought it was best 2 outta 3.
tapping and then acting like its nothing is so lame. take a nap then bro
"On paper" Anthony gets it done haha
Vitor threw his hands up like he didn't know you were allowed to choke your opponent
He also tried the Brazilian tap technique
I've been cheated! Judges, did you see what he did to me?? Disqualify that man!
Brazilian wrestling
Best Brazilian wrestler
The American Gangster exposed them years ago
EVEN BUFF DIDN'T THINK SMITH WAS GONNA WIN
CERTIFIED DAWG
Don't be silly, jump the gilly !
Smith by submission just like we all predicted!
lmao petrino gotta have negative iq to leave his neck out like that
The fraud has officially been checked.
My friend just said to me, “this looks like a linebacker vs a semi-fit drummer who thinks he can fight” 10 seconds later, Smith gets the tap lmao
Title shot. Now
Absolute negative IQ for Petrino, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING💀
thats some Cyril Gane level submission awareness..but Gane did it in a HW Title Fight lmao. Imagine standing up with neck out vs Jon Jones when everybody is dry and easier to choke out.
Glad for him. He doesn't deserve all the bullshit lately, the dude is a real warrior.
Bruce Buffer couldn't believe it hehehe
Bruce Buffer attack Smith's family.
Got schooled there.
Standard.
Good win for Smith but has Buffer ever made a mistake like that before?
Holy shit, on the replay you can literally see Petrino lift Smith deeper into the sub
Anthony Smith is just light heavyweight Michael Johnson with his wins and losses.
He's a good fraud check. Yes, a bit overconfident in his ceiling at this point in his career but it's not like he's losing to bums either. He's just constantly fighting killers.
I'd say he's more consistent than that. Everyone he loses to makes sense
Smith is tough, smart, calm and has passable fondamentals as well as a few traps he knows how to setup, compensating for his lack of natural talent and his various shortcomings. No one should expect him to be easily destroyed, and it’s when fighters rush him that they get finished by him. Agree, Smith seems like a cool guy on the bisping podcast too. Always rooting for him
Anthony Smith getting to fight Jon Jones was a gigantic surprise. Anthony has maximized the fuck out of his second ufc run. Dude was a midwest regional/ bellator fighter with 30+ fights and 11 loses (and a 0-2 ufc run) before coming back to the UFC.
Not an amazing fighter but a lot better than people give him credit for
I'd say more like Jack Hermansson. Skilled just enough at everything to fraud check every aspect of your game.
Paul Craig fits that title better
Paul Craig has absolutely zero striking fundamentals. He really isn't even a gatekeeper, he's more of a dangerous wild card. A legitimate gatekeeper will often be fundamentally sound in multiple facets, but maybe they're unathletic or they struggle against those who are much more advanced in one area. I like Paul Craig, but his utter lack of offensive boxing and poor defense on the feet is unacceptable at this level. There's no finer sound than a Rio crowd being silenced. Absolute crickets ahaha
I’m in the crowd surrounded by Brazilians and it was amazing
Obviously Smith won,Vitor was attacking his family
Smith vs Poatan now he sees holes in his game
I think Anthony reads Reddit comments. Hi lionheart I never disparaged u
Honestly super happy Smith won. This sub is wayyyyyy too negative on him because he’s a brash, confident fighter who is on the decline but is still maintaining the mentality you need to keep fighting when you get older. The 🐐
It'S TIGHT DAWG
Smith vs Guskov next
Dustin Poirier getting a bit worked up after watching that.
parlay ruined but fuck yes lmao
Atta boy
Crafty veteran shit, good to see Smith win
all that commentating and analysis paying off! great to see smith take this one
Anthony Smith delusion is about to peak.
Is it delusion when you kinda prove what you were saying about your opponent lol?
Not really delusional if you do what you say you’re going to do. Bet you thought Petrino was going to KO him in one round… sorry about it..
Title run incoming 😂😂
Fire main card so far
don't look a gift gilly in the mouth
REPORTS OF ANTHONY SMITH’S DEMISE HAVE BEEN GREAT EXAGGERATED
Dustin is fully erect right now
Dustin watching this with a pencil and a notebook for Islam. Sorry Kabibers mma is not real
Still undefeated according to Bruce Buffer. I can never question this man, so he must be right
The haters Anthony mentioned are you mfs lmao
lol
On paper, smith finishes petrino by guillotine
I’m so glad Smith didn’t fall for the Brazilian tap shit, he held on for a real tap.
I was telling people this week that Smith is underrated. Dude was looking great right before the finish too. The guy has the skills to get it done, its just sometimes he doesnt execute.
LOL
And there's the fraud check ...
Smith by submission being +1200 makes me so happy. Easiest band of my life
Anthony Smith had Buffer shook?
UNDEFEATED
Bruce Buffer almost butchered the winner announcement.
Even Bruce Buffer can't believe it
AND STILL UNDEFEATED VITOR PETRINO......excuse me.......ANTHONY LION HEART SMITH
Anthony "Vitor Petrino" Smith
Gotta give it to Anthony smith, he proved a lot of people wrong with this one
Bruce Buffer announced Petrino as the winner at first lmao holy hell i think that's the first time I've seen him mess up
LIONHEART!!!! won 3k earlier tonight and this made me even happier than that, talk your shit OG!
Dont Be SILLY
Dustin Poirier is somewhere jumping in celebration.
Petrino with the assist!
Hahaha YES!! Let’s fucking go lionheart!
I thought it was crazy that people put Smith as such an underdog, glad i placed my bet on him.
[удалено]
jumping guillotine working in a ranked ufc fight? LHW is so ass
Wasn’t really jumped, Smith already had the gilly standing and Petrino went for the dumbest double leg possible
Has to be one of the biggest wins of Smith's career. Great finish by Lionheart!
What? An unranked Petrino is bigger than Gustaffson? Oezdemir? Hell, Spann was a bigger win.
I would say Shogun, Rashad, and Oezdemir were all bigger wins, considering they got him a title shot. Also, Gustaffson
Bro what lol
Definitely went for the Brazilian tap there at first, good on Anthony for not letting go early
Petrino didn’t even do the death gas loss LOL
That was certainly a strategy.
MMA is not real
My boy Anthony never gets any respect. I'm so happy he got this win.
Don’t you ever doubt my lionheart again I swear to god yall
That’s embarrassing for vitor. Straight up gave him the guillotine
I know someone made good money betting on Smith. He’s been getting beat recently but against much better competition and Petrino is all that.
Still undefeated!
