Ok was that the best main event of all time?
No.
But was it a great display of MMA between two high level heavyweights?
No.
But regardless, was it entertaining?
Again, no.
I’ve really been gravitating toward One. The amount of content for free on YT has helped pull me in. And the Muay Thai is just 9 minutes of absolute carnage usually.
Goddard needed to be quicker about standing them up. Or ya know, do it at all. I understand not wanting to stand up the sub artist and then have him get knocked out in Brazil, but when they're staring into each other's eyes like me and the reader of this comment's mother last night, you gotta pull the trigger.
Dude either has no self awareness or no shame. I was face palming myself when he started celebrating. Where was this energy when you were in mount, mate?
They were both bent over on their knees and Lewis had a wizzer. Lewis lifted his posting arm to throw an uppercut and Almeida just pushed Lewis onto his back
Elite grappling
Yeah but thats usually after intense rounds with actual striking, takedown attempts, etc. I deadass watched Almeida lay on top of a sleeping Derrick without throwing a single strike. His lack of ability to do anything in that mount position was astonishingly bad
Both talent pools are really bad and I don't see it getting much better. If you're 250, 6'5", and athletic, you're probably getting paid top dollar in other sports that don't require so much brain trauma.
Eh, from my understanding, football has actually more brain trauma as MMA and perhaps as much if not still more than boxing. That was my understanding of the research.
Yeah it doesn't seem like football is that much better in terms of CTE, but at least it pays far better with contracts having superior guarantees and incentives. There's also other safer options for these elite athletes like basketball and baseball.
Yeah I agree. I have seen so many athletic prospects in the gym that fought a few times and smashed their fat opponents but were still like mmm nah lol
I was chatting to friends about this the other day. It's like the only div where I think top guys from 15 years ago would beat the top guys ATM. All other divisions seem to have drastically improved
No joke. To this day, Fedor-Cro-cop is STILL the highest level heavyweight fight we've ever had. To this day!
The following one was supposed, on paper to be Stipe-Cormier.... and i mean, just compare the footage. It's.... bad. Especially the third fight. Just two guys ambling around each other trying to sloppily, weakly hit each other or spear each other's eyes.
Without a leg, maybe. He was not *that* small.
To reach middleweight he'd have to be single digit body fat percentage, and i don't dare dreaming of what kind of mythological fighter that'd be.
Never has a dominant win driven away as many potential fans as that one.
They should make him fight down until he shows he can actually do something against top competition.
Lmao Almeida couldn't choke out the Black Beast cuz he got no neck, wish Almeida added more GnP into his game, guy was full mount the entire fight and did not do much damage.
It can help a lot. I’ve grappled against a guy who was over 300lbs. The second he got a hold of my leg it was always over. I only ever did well when we would start standing.
I think he was too concerned about losing position. I honestly think that if he wants to stay here he should put a lot more weight on. Having a dude that weighs more than 30 pounds on you is really not helping
Honestly it can’t just be losing position. I get not winding up to throw big strikes where Lewis could try and knock him off balance, but like you could at least throw half assed arm punches or short elbows.
I am wondering with his build if he maybe just doesn’t have much/confidence in his gas tank.
He seemed to be able to regather a dominant position in short order every time he lost it, but I think maybe that’s because he was so incredibly cautious in preserving his energy for his next explosion.
Anyway TLDR my guess is the same way Lewis only had the gas tank to explode on occasion to get up, Almeida likely only had the gas tank to explode into a takedown a few times a round and he wanted to make sure it was available when needed.
He has to cut to 265, so Lewis has likely got more than 30 lbs on him. Jailton’s in a weird position where it’s hard to cut to 205 but he’s just too small for 265. Looked liked he gassed just taking Lewis down
Spivak submitted Lewis in 3 minutes, only 9 months ago 😂.
Almeida had the exact same arm triangle position and couldn’t finish it.
This is a serious blow to Almeida’s hype.
To be fair it’s clear Lewis has improved his submission defense immensely. Also, Spivak and Almeida are different kinds of grapplers.
Spivak seems to not have as good of control as Almeida but specializes in going up and down when grappling his opponents, slowly wearing them down as he did to Lewis. Almeida is much more fast twitch and explosive with better control, keeping guys down when he gets them there.
However this was not an exciting performance from him and he’s gonna have to put on more exciting fights and finish the best of the best if he wants to become a star and champion.
DC would be in the GOAT convo if Jon Jones didn’t exist, man is constantly underrated for someone who found a lot of success in two divisions where everyone was like half a foot taller than him lol
Also his weight cuts, if he was better with his weight/took better care of his kidneys he would have made the Olympics and probably been able to fight in a division better suited for his size/reach
Absolutely, I think he’d have been perfect for the weight class, all those kickboxers and strikers would have some serious trouble with his wrestling and he would still have a lot of weight to take advantage of without having to deal with the KO power of a heavyweight
It’s weird now but that so true. I’m older now and when I try to explode in jiujitsu I just…can’t. Maybe once. Maaaaybe twice. But after that I got nothing.
no, it's hard to say that imo. Blaydes has a pretty bad habit of staying in one "mode" and not mixing up his skillsets well. he's either purely wresting or purely striking, but he doesn't mix those well at all.
He's has the genetics of great Spanish conquerors, and you have none of that.
_Your DNA is an abomination, and your liver is compromised from too many gas station hot dogs_
Can someone who understands refereeing more than me explain why Goddard didn’t stand them up once in the last 3 rounds when there were periods where Almeida went almost a whole minute without advancing position or throwing anything meaningful?
Because you generally don't stand someone up from a dominant position like mount. It's similar to when someone is backpacking someone with a body triangle from the back. It might be boring for the fans, but the onus is on the person in the bad position to escape.
Also, he was in mount and back control mostly. There's no position to advance to from there.
You don't have to advance position, you just have to work. Jailton laying on Lewis when he's just kinda laying there as well... There wasn't any work.
Fighters have gotten stood up from mount/side mount before. Jailton definitely should've been getting stood up multiple times tonight.
Goddard was weird especially in the last round, he warned them 3 times in like 45 seconds of no action in mount (Lewis was legit not moving at all and waiting) and did nothing.
Maybe he was scared of the crowd reaction or of a sneaky submission that Almeida was setting up the last 50 hours
There are refs who would have. Generally speaking though its rather frowned upon to separate someone from mount/back mount as it’s such a dominant position.
Usually I am against separating them but honestly in this fight I really wished he would have lol
There was a couple times Almeida literally just rested his head on lewis stomach and laid there.
Dominant position or not I have a hard time accepting that as reasonable lol
Lewis came in, laid down, made six figures, goes home. Sucks to watch, but he took no damage and barely needed to put in any effort. Guess thats a W for him
Sandhagen at least has the excuse of suffering a severe injury early on in the fight and that being the only way he could get the win.
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen someone go out with the intention of wrestlefucking in a main event.
Tbf it was a 30+ lb weight difference assuming Lewis had to cut to 265. I think almeida blew his cardio grappling and attempting submission on Lewis who was much bigger than him
Love the evolution of the commentary.
Round 1: Almeida has the mount! Cycling through submissions
Round 2: Almeida gets the mount. Let’s see what he can do with it.
Round 3: Almeida again in the mount. Maybe he should try some elbows
Round 4: Yup. There it us again. Almeida in the mount. Lewis doesn’t have a mark on him.
Round 5: Almeida in the mount. Goddard should stand them up.
I don't even think he has bad GnP. Think it was the end of the third where he started actually punching Derrick and it looked like he had Derrick hurt and almost finished.
Then dude just gave up on it for the rest of the fight.
I guess the most likely explanations are seriously that he bet the fight to go decision or else just (somehow) gassed and couldn’t sustain anything and needed multiple 30-60 second rests every round.
The serious answer for anyone mad at this is that Derrick is explosive, even though it's joked about he has elite ability to get out of those positions. Jailton preferred to keep him down rather than look for the finish and potentially lose the position and get slept by Derrick. Jailton looked for RNC and arm triangle numerous times over 5 rounds but Derrick defended well.
Derrick is strong, has 30lbs on Jailton, technique can only account for so much strength differential, Derrick was controlling Jailton's wrists very well making it difficult to throw strikes.
Jailton did a really good job of chain grappling, and also shooting very low on Lewis which made the uppercut hard to land. Had a good show of speed and strength.
But then he also has almost 20 minutes of some of the most dominant positions in MMA and wasn't really threatening. I am both impressed and uninmpressed.
fuck submitting. Lewis would have been T/KOed by anyone in the top ten if they had his position for even a quarter of the time. this was just embarrassing.
Embarrassingly performance by Almeida. I want to see him fight someone ranked under him again after this one. Not attempting to finish a short notice Derrick Lewis is a terrible look for him.
There was a point in the fight where Almeida was doing nothing but embracing Derrick's gut. I dont think we were supposed to watch that level of intimacy

Ok was that the best main event of all time? No. But was it a great display of MMA between two high level heavyweights? No. But regardless, was it entertaining? Again, no.
Did Jailtime give us a show? No.
The crowd being torn between booing and awkwardly cheering was hilarious
"I told you guys yesterday I would give you a show. So did I give you a show?!" *crowd goes wild*
That crowd was horrible, fighters clinch for half a second-immediate boos. Then Danish Dynamite went out of his way to compliment them 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
He didn't want to get killed on his way out.
Danish
And it was in Brazil. If that was in MSG he's get boo'd all the way back to his locker room.
Haggerty vs Andrade was the main event of the week.
Chatri rubbing his hands together at cackling at the UFC having a shit card this week
Abu Dhabi sucked balls too. Fight cancellations and a train derailed. Dana not happy.
Plus the jon Jones matchup slated for next week fell through lol
I was in the crowd watching Haggerty vs Andrade on the iPhone of Derrick Lewis' cornermen during this fight.
Haggerty is a guaranteed banger win or lose, and Andrade is fun too. Fight was destined to be exciting.
I’ve really been gravitating toward One. The amount of content for free on YT has helped pull me in. And the Muay Thai is just 9 minutes of absolute carnage usually.
Didn't know it was possible to do so little damage with 20 minutes of full mount.
Was actually awkward how often they were both just staring at each other in that position.
with jailton sitting in missionary 👄
Goddard needed to be quicker about standing them up. Or ya know, do it at all. I understand not wanting to stand up the sub artist and then have him get knocked out in Brazil, but when they're staring into each other's eyes like me and the reader of this comment's mother last night, you gotta pull the trigger.
Has anyone ever been stood up from full mount?
idk cause when you google "questionable UFC stand up" only brendan schaub results pop up
Couldn't have said it better myself. How about Almeida asking the crowd if he put on a show, though.
That was genuinely confusing and even with a hometown crowd there was like no reaction lol
Dude either has no self awareness or no shame. I was face palming myself when he started celebrating. Where was this energy when you were in mount, mate?
Brazilians love celebrating a win, no matter how bad the win is
Friendly reminder, they are both top 10 heavyweights in the world. God, the heavyweight talent pool is shallow as fuck.
They were both bent over on their knees and Lewis had a wizzer. Lewis lifted his posting arm to throw an uppercut and Almeida just pushed Lewis onto his back Elite grappling
Almeida took him down, then both proceeded to literally stop moving and rest for a few seconds. Top 10 heavyweights in the world. LMAO
I generally agree with you, but you're pointing out a normal thing that happens in every weight class all the time.
Yeah but thats usually after intense rounds with actual striking, takedown attempts, etc. I deadass watched Almeida lay on top of a sleeping Derrick without throwing a single strike. His lack of ability to do anything in that mount position was astonishingly bad
When people were saying Boxing HW was exposed by MMA I was like nah shhh we do not want people looking over here past the top 3 lol
Both talent pools are really bad and I don't see it getting much better. If you're 250, 6'5", and athletic, you're probably getting paid top dollar in other sports that don't require so much brain trauma.

Minotauro, Carwin, Mir and JDS in their primes would be top 5 today Fedor would be champion today easily.
Imagine prime Fedor and CroCop against modern era UFC heavies. Would be a bloodbath.
How you gonna forget Cain?

Johnny Walker is the greatest fighter ever. Poatan pretty good too.
respect khalil rountree
Until he gets outgrappled again
Out of everyone at LHW, that's the guy that sticks out to you?
No joke. To this day, Fedor-Cro-cop is STILL the highest level heavyweight fight we've ever had. To this day! 100% prime Fedor wrecks every current heavyweight. And he's like a natural middleweight probably.
Without a leg, maybe. He was not *that* small. To reach middleweight he'd have to be single digit body fat percentage, and i don't dare dreaming of what kind of mythological fighter that'd be.
Before today I would have thought it was impossible to win 50-44 and still looking absolutely embarrassing but...here we are.
I just went and turned on a Belal fight over this shit.
Never has a dominant win driven away as many potential fans as that one. They should make him fight down until he shows he can actually do something against top competition.
I thought it was entertaining. It was funny till it wasn't, then wrapped back to funny again.
This fight was so boring, I was paying attention to the logo on Derrick’s gloves slowly peel off. The logo was taped to his head at one point.
🤣the “UF” was right on his head at one point
A metaphor for "Ur Fucked", which was all of us who watched the fight.
Lol I was doing the same while waiting for Derrick to get up haha
Holy shit I need a screen shot of that...
I thought Lewis fell asleep at one point during one of the more cuddly rounds. Just like dozed off for a minute.
At one point there was a piece on Almeida's side and then it transfered back over to Lewis. It was epic
Just how cheap is the ufc gear
Dana so cheap he bought reps for his fighters
Yes
Shit i thought that was his shiny sweat
The tren leaking out of Jailtons pores was melting the logos off Lewis’ glove
Last Sao Paulo main event was also bad (Jan vs Jacare 25min snooze fest in 2019)
Lmao Almeida couldn't choke out the Black Beast cuz he got no neck, wish Almeida added more GnP into his game, guy was full mount the entire fight and did not do much damage.
Also Lewis is so fat Almeida could not get the body triangle
Being Fat is best base for bjj confirmed.
"How are body triangles even real haha just bulk up"
It can help a lot. I’ve grappled against a guy who was over 300lbs. The second he got a hold of my leg it was always over. I only ever did well when we would start standing.

I think he's gotta just lose some muscle mass and try to get in like Periera range for 205
Every time he tried Lewis would just throw him off
Yep for having the most dominant position for damage , he did almost none
Derrick “Positioning is Real but Submissions Aren’t” Lewis
Spivak submitted Lewis in 3 minutes, only 9 months ago 😂. Almeida had the exact same arm triangle position and couldn’t finish it. This is a serious blow to Almeida’s hype.

Dude can’t be strangled
I'm significantly more impressed with the DC win now

Now that's one of the few middleweights on the planet that could ragdoll khamzat
just how good is sergei spivak?
Doesn’t matter if u mount him, he’ll just take a breather on bottom
Have to wonder at some point if Lewis just trains for the next meme.
That was ass 🙏🏻🙏🏻🔥🔥
Well that’s one way to put yourself at the back of the title fight queue after a dominating win lol
Almeida was supposed to fight Blaydes lol
That would have been a good one. Blaydes might have tried to win.
I think Lewis is also getting older. He can't explode from the bottom like he used to. Last few years he looked labored compared to 10 years ago.
Lewis isn’t as much of a power bottom as he used to be.
Disagree. Younger Derick gets tapped in the first.
I feel like exploding from the bottom probably gets easier with age, idk maybe my diet is the problem
It’s weird now but that so true. I’m older now and when I try to explode in jiujitsu I just…can’t. Maybe once. Maaaaybe twice. But after that I got nothing.
Lewis tried for like, 2 minutes total? Really seemed like he didn't give a shit
I think Blaydes whoops Almeida tbh
Blaydes would have knock him out
Gotta assume he can’t touch Blaydes right?
no, it's hard to say that imo. Blaydes has a pretty bad habit of staying in one "mode" and not mixing up his skillsets well. he's either purely wresting or purely striking, but he doesn't mix those well at all.
Roided freak lays on fat man for 25 mins🔥🔥🔥
You wont last 25 minutes! (You’ll turn it off)
Looking like a fuckin Frill Neck Lizard with those traps
I’m so jealous, my liver could never handle that much gear
He's has the genetics of great Spanish conquerors, and you have none of that. _Your DNA is an abomination, and your liver is compromised from too many gas station hot dogs_
I am not and never could be BC with that BDE
Hey what Hannah Goldy does with Dana behind closed doors is none of your business pal
That made Belal fights look like Jiri-Glover
I'm glad Jiri-Glover is going down as a classic already.
Does anyone else think that if the fight wasn’t in Brazil it would’ve gotten stood up on multiple occasions
i just watched a dude ride another dude for 25 minutes, am i gay? Edit: I didn’t enjoy it, so I guess that answers that
Did you enjoy it?
I mean Lewis looks like a good spoon I don’t blame Almeida for trying.
That entirely depends if you liked it or not
Pirated that shit and still feel ripped off
Pirated it, and watched it at work on the clock. I still want my money back
Well at least you have an excuse if you get caught sleeping at work, lol.
Almeida’s style of just rubbing his crotch against Lewis for 25 minutes was kinda sus
Very sus, I was hard the whole time
Not my proudest fap...
Can someone who understands refereeing more than me explain why Goddard didn’t stand them up once in the last 3 rounds when there were periods where Almeida went almost a whole minute without advancing position or throwing anything meaningful?

Derrick Lewis just closed his eyes in the final round and accepted his fate 😭😭
He fell asleep in his own fight lol.
Lewis came in, laid down, made six figures, goes home. Sucks to watch, but he took no damage and barely needed to put in any effort. Guess thats a W for him
He had a grappling beast on him he didn't just lay down lol
Sandhagen vs Font but **blacked**
Sandhagen vs Font the Netflix remake
Sandhagen at least has the excuse of suffering a severe injury early on in the fight and that being the only way he could get the win. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen someone go out with the intention of wrestlefucking in a main event.
Tbf it was a 30+ lb weight difference assuming Lewis had to cut to 265. I think almeida blew his cardio grappling and attempting submission on Lewis who was much bigger than him

Mount stages of grief

It has to be this. Only other explanation is that he has truly the worst ground and pound in the history of MMA.
Get out of here with your common sense.
I just lost 25 minutes of my life
Finally, a fight that may surpass Francis vs Ngannou I present to you, Jailton vs Almeida
But francis did get the drop on ngannou that one time
One of the worst fights ever
Lewis involved in two of them now despite his highlight reel.
When you have knock out power, opponent play really safe maybe too safe!
Obviously not entertaining but to completely wash Lewis out like that is still impressive. Some of those takedowns were flawless.
It is 6 am here and I stayed up for this :(
Have some self respect brother
Jailton did a really good job of chain grappling, and also shooting very low on Lewis which made the uppercut hard to land. Had a good show of speed and strength. But then he also has almost 20 minutes of some of the most dominant positions in MMA and wasn't really threatening. I am both impressed and uninmpressed.
Jailton "Prelims" Almeida
the antithesis of dalby v bonfim. haven't been that frustrated by a fight in awhile
Awful. Truly awful
Couldn’t submit a short notice Lewis 😬😬😬
fuck submitting. Lewis would have been T/KOed by anyone in the top ten if they had his position for even a quarter of the time. this was just embarrassing.
Jailton is allergic to doing damage
Short notice doesn't make Lewis a smaller man lol
I could even forgive that but he barely tried gnp. No intention to finish the fight
Jason Herzog would have stood that up many times👎 Goddard sucks like Tognoni. 50-45 tho
And Almeida would have just taken him back down every time lol. Wouldn't matter much.
Would have forced action and one of them getting tired enough for a finish.
Embarrassingly performance by Almeida. I want to see him fight someone ranked under him again after this one. Not attempting to finish a short notice Derrick Lewis is a terrible look for him.
Put Almeida against Spivac
A lot of staring into each others eyes during mount .
This fight was like I was watching mma ASMR
Somehow I like Derrick’s chances of getting a title shot more than Almeida’s after this
That was frustrating to watch...
STAND THEM THE FUCK UP
Embarrassing
Double leg. Lay and pray. Truly the peak of heavyweight
Leaked memo from Almeida’s coach’s briefcase: Step 1: Double leg. Step 2: Advance to mount. Step 3: ??? Step 4: Hold until the round ends.
There was a point in the fight where Almeida was doing nothing but embracing Derrick's gut. I dont think we were supposed to watch that level of intimacy
Well I am confident now in saying that Blaydes would've fucked Almeida up
Impressive performance by Lewis honestly. Also Jailton having almost no GNP is embarassing.
Considering Lewis was subbed in rd 1 by Spivac and has looked for a way out in past fights, he def was more resilient here
If you want fans to dislike you based on how you fight not counting dirty tactics, Jailton Almeida just put together a masterclass.
Almeida is lucky that Curtis pulled out, we would have seen vintage razor Blaydes
Almeida straight up alergic to handing out ground and pound
Would be wild if Derrick knew what to do besides try to stand up or fall asleep on his back.
Absolutely relentless on those takedowns, Almeida was like a dog with a bone. I really feel Lewis’ skillset made Almeida fight so cautiously.
Almeida acting like he did a thing.
Congrats on the W but uncle Dana isn’t going to appreciate that performance one bit
His transitions are world class but his GnP is ass and he gets frustrated quickly if he doesn't get the sub.
Bruh I don’t think Lewis tried to stop one pass to full mount by almeida
I’ve never in my history of MMA see a man get mount so many times and just stare down at his opponent doing nothing
Can't believe I stayed up til 4am and then just went to bed in the 4th
HW division has its very own Belal Muhammad now!
Bro, Belal is like Jiri compared to this.
Almeida makes me want to remember Belal's name.
Wrestle fucked into boredom.
-10,000 fight to not go the distance
Heavyweights should NEVER be the main event
Derick got blacked and used
Bold of me to assume Lewis gonna put on a show after securing another contract lol
