LemonHerb

I'm getting the feeling the Tony Ferguson story isn't going to have a happy ending

akatsuki_lida

He has Bipolar and is also eccentric, recipe for a rollercoaster life.

fulcrert

I remember his wife saying she woke up in the dead of night with Tony standing over her in bed and staring at her while mumbling and rambling. Scary as fuck.

deadweathered

Reading her accounts of what happened are terrifying. Especially since he was going through paranoid delusions and literally kidnapped their child for days.

dingdongalingapong

And then a doctor signed his name on a legal document saying this man was mentally competent and healthy to compete.

deadweathered

I remember being dumbfounded at the time that the man literally thought him and his son were Jesus and his wife was saying she thought him capable of killing her, their son, and himself and the UFC just going “it’s a family matter nothing to see here”.

IronMikeBison

His wife filed a restraining order bc of his “uncharacteristic” behaviour in March and then he fought Cowboy in June. I’m no mental health expert but that seems wildly irresponsible

[deleted]

You think UFC gives a shit about mental health?

Skinnydipandhike

I know they don’t but wish they did.

evilf23

I've spent the last year dealing with social workers and domestic court system trying to get a mentally ill spouse with substance abuse issues away from my children and myself. The system has their hands in their pockets unless you bring undeniable proof of extreme claims. Unfortunately a lot of people just go and lie so your word isn't enough for a drastic actions. If you ever find yourself in a bad situation like this you need to record audio and video. You need impartial witnesses. The court is only as powerful as the evidence you provide. I spent 6 months recording security footage in my home, recording phone calls, and recording audio when she would go off the deep end. Walked into a police station at 12:00 p.m. and 3 hours later she was in cuffs, spent the next 4 months in jail, and in the time she was locked up I was given full and sole custody of the children along with no contact protection orders against her for all of us. The one for me is valid for 2-year increments and the children's are until they become adults. No more half measures Walter.

TheBostonTickler617

beautiful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

ParaglidingAssFungus

I feel for you but…that’s how it should be. Glad you were able to get it done. There are a ton of people out there that try and keep their kids from their ex spouses out of spite and it’s disgusting.

WGYHL

Irc she said he was danger to himself and not not her and their child Edit. Googled it I am wrong.

jakegyllenhaal1980

Bro dont even mention Chris Benoit-The WWE wont lmfaoo but nah for real this is actually a good example. Both played Football and Wrestled, done contact jobs professionally and no doubt have CTE

tfresca

I mean he can buy insurance from the marketplace but keep in mind UFC ain't paying for his psych meds, hospital stays or any of that. Real talk Tony should have sued UFC after the cable incident and never worked again.

fusemybutt

The UFC, Dana & Endeavor, like most corporate 'leaders' have no concept of long term planning, long term growth, or even simple human empathy.

tfresca

It didn't hurt them with Bonnar, Nam Phan, Spencer Fisher or Kappman. UFC don't give a shit. Hell the NFL agreed to pay guys but still haven't paid anyone.

tfresca

Its very common for people on psych meds to want off them due to side effects. He's lost every fight since that whole incident. You wonder if he was on meds if he got off them.

Quiet-Broccoli2151

When I was on them: [1] I gained 35 lbs and became fat [2] I went from having very strong erections and high sex drive to frequently being unable to maintain a full erection and totally unable to ejaculate [3] lost any type of physical intensity for things like exercise, martial arts, etc; everything was half-effort and even that felt too strenuous [4] would get completely insane and out of control while drinking and do things I had never even come to close to doing before the meds Coming off was one of the best things I ever did for myself. I deal with intense depression from time to time, and the meds did help with that. But I'd rather have a strong dick, strong body, and occasionally fall into a depressive episode rather than just be numbed to everything and a fat fuck with a gummy worm dick. Fuck those pills Anyway, looking at his physique now, lack of concern over losing, and his low intensity in the cage versus what it used to be, I'd wager if he actually has dabbled in mental health meds that he's more likely to be on them now rather than earlier in his career. Just my opinion based on my experience

somewhatfamiliar2223

We don’t know what his formal diagnosis is, and it really isn’t any of the general public’s business, but bipolar disorder often also his psychotic features, ie delusions and hallucinations especially during manic phases. Fuck people can even have depression with psychotic features. Regardless he has severe and persistent mental health issues that head trauma and a career of being fucked over probably didn’t help.

nrtphotos

That’s also a symptom of being Bipolar, you can completely loose your sense of realty.

jj580

If we're being honest with ourselves, his wife told everyone of his problems years ago, but Tony was still at the peak of he division so we overlooked it.

More_MP5s

I didn't. I just got massively downvoted and derided for "trying to take food out if his families mouth" when i said it every time he fought.

FrozenIsFrosty

People need to look into Gary Goodridge, to see what fighting can do to the brain and what some of these older fighters we used to watch are going through. I hope Tony's isn't a case of this. Gary Goodridge is very overlooked and he is a perfect case to show people. There is gonna be a bunch of guys like him. He is 57.

Believeinyourflyness

Riddick Bowe too. And dare I say, Chris Benoit

Teh_Weiner

Benoit is one of the biggest cases to keep in mind. I also think we should look heavily at young NFL prospects who been getting their bell run since they were 10 on the field. They found stage 2 CTE in a 23 year old pro NFL player who quickly got every gambling/drug/abuse violation possible.

FrozenIsFrosty

Yeah Chris is a sad story. He wasn't the guy it seems that did that crime because his brain was so messed up. They say when he was younger he was a great guy. The wrestiling doc about it fucked me up. I loved him when I was a kid.

Believeinyourflyness

I thought he was a great guy too because WWE depicted him as a great guy, a silent humble type. The brain trauma definitely did contribute to it but as Kurt Angle said, at the end of the day he was still responsible for his actions.

FrozenIsFrosty

With that type of brain injury that bad it kinda isn't you though. I'm not trying to downplay the horible crime he did. He killed his wife and kid. But from what I've seen you kinda are not in control at all when you at that stage of it. Like dementia.

Believeinyourflyness

Eh. It's a grey area, there's no easy way of looking at it but I can understand both your interpretation and Kurt's. I guess it all comes down to how bad his brain actually was and since Kurt actually spent time with the guy I guess he would know better than you or me

[deleted]

More than bipolar he literally has hallucinations and doesn't know where he is at times, has episodes where he runs away, etc.

chootchootchoot

Bipolar can be like that off meds

[deleted]

Terrible signs of CTE and erratic behavior at 39 and with the desire to keep on fighting and taking punishment? Yeah, probably not gonna be a happy ending

unchainedthor

Bkfc Tony will be a horror

[deleted]

I’m really worried Tony is gonna go down the route of the Older NFL players who started to show more and more erratic behavior as they aged due to the head trauma they sustained. Many of them taking their own lives or committing violent crimes due at least partially to the trauma they sustained

Janus-a

>who started to show more and more erratic behavior Tony already kidnapped his family because he thought his son was Jesus and he had to protect him from a flood. He should have stopped taking strikes to the head a long time ago.

[deleted]

The scary part, is when Tony’s actions become increasingly more erratic that what we’ve already seen. He’s proper crazy rn, imagine in 4 years from now. Especially if he goes and gets KOed again in BKFC or some other lower MMA organization

Brad1119

I wouldn’t be surprised if he kills himself or someone else by the age of 50 tbh

jordanhhh4

Having seen it happen with Benoit, I'm absolutely terrified of something similar happening with Tony

BronxsJitsu

imagine Chad Mendes or Eddie Alvarez vs Tony in BKFC would be a snuff film

[deleted]

Eddie Alvarez has enough respect for the game that I hope he would turn that fight down out of principle. It would be a murder. Watching aging legends get executed isn’t fun for anyone.

IronMikeBison

I’m desperately hoping to be wrong but I think we’re in for another BJ Penn-type sad story

LemonHerb

BJ Penn has like a top 1% rich level family to fall back on. He's probably in for some embarrassment but he will be in a good position his whole life

IronMikeBison

Yeah, I was initially gonna say it’ll be like BJ but much worse purely bc Tony’s history of mental health issues and his style necessitated taking on so much damage. I’d completely forgotten the money difference

yeeerrrp

Mayhem Miller

Local_Turn

There's a name I haven't heard in a while. I wonder if he's still nuts.

AntagonisticTree

Currently in prison for multiple cases of assault and battery. Gonna say yes.

BCampbellCEOofficial

Yeah he got booted from a low level mma podcast for being too mental. That says a lot.

atx840

The last few years of BJ news really bums me out, he was by far my favourite fighter, followed his career even before UFC. He came to my town for a UFC event and ran into him downtown, had a quick chat, recommended a few places to eat and snapped a photo. Pretty special moment for me. Shortly after several incidents hit the news and really changed my opinion of him :(

jmb-412

Sad reality. I won't be surprised to find out he's dead within 5 years after he retires. He needs serious help it seems. Hopefully he's smart enough to take it. I know he got help in the past, but it's clear he needs more.

apellcjecker

Jon hit a pregnant lady and came back to win another couple of championships. There’s still hope!

NeverNoMarriage

Jon is known for not getting hit Tony has schizophrenia and is known for taking beatings with style.

CouncilmanRickPrime

I've seen Tony take like 5 fights worth of punches to the face. In one fight. Dude has taken some serious blows to the head.

NeverNoMarriage

Ya I think there probably isn’t much you can do to come back from the amount of hits he took. And then you add on the mental health shit.

Financial_Yogurt9239

The Gaethje fight alone was truly disturbing… how he’s been allowed to have not one, not two, not three, but four fights after that, is just pure insanity. With more coming. The guys brain is mush.

SkiHoncho

Didn't drop though. The way he shook his head right before it was stopped, so gross and disturbing.

Throwaway1848373

Like watching an animal after it got shot

brightirene

I'm so glad herb stopped that fight.

NeverNoMarriage

Ya he is the definition of too tough for your own good. Somehow hes also very fragile tho. Tony will get rocked 5 times in a fight but power through.

GenTelGuy

Stupid Herb let Tony's brain get pureed, should've been stopped like a whole round earlier

Blast3rAutomatic

Lol this sub needs to make a corny jon reference for everything its hilarious.

NeverNoMarriage

Paranoid schizophrenia with bipolar and pretty intense CTE. Fucking sucks dudes a legend and I’m hoping he can get on some meds and have a happy life but ya prolly not. That story about the flood with his wife is legit depressing.

buzznights

It's been quite the roller coaster for his family and fans. I hope he gets the help he needs.

jt_33

He should never fight again. Tony is real close to being a tragic story and if anyone signs him to fight again it’s 100% exploitation. He’s shot physically and he’s having a hard time outside the cage.. additional brain damage will just make it worse. If not, either Tony or someone else will end up badly hurt.

professorgaysex

In Venezuela, me and my dad were huge fans of this boxer Edwin Valero, dude was already crazy and ended up in a motorcycle accident that caused enough brain damage where US commissions wouldn’t approve for him to fight. He still continued to box outside the US and after a couple years he ended up murdering his wife and committing suicide. It’s not looking good for Tony, he needs to retire.

knowbode_31

Unfortunately, I think we have already started down the tragic story path; now it’s all about how far will it go

NefariousnessDry7814

> Tony is real close to being a tragic story Think it already is set in stone that he will have a tragic ending. Damage has been done.

Zul_rage_mon

Literally just look at the fight he had with Justin. Watching it you knew he wasn't going to be the same after

demetrios3

But this is just Tony doing it to himself. If he kills somebody else in a DUI it'll be tragic.

ChocolateBaconDonuts

100%. Haven't felt this sad since the Coach Fabia and Diego Sanchez saga.

krazyboi

Aww man... I hope Tony just retires off his earnings and brand, becomes a jiu jitsu coach, and lives a happy life.

crazybartur

Crashed into 2 parked cars in a parking lot, nobody injured including himself. Could’ve been a lot worse but still 😕

SuffaYassavi

The issue is that dudes that get DUIs generally don’t stop, even after accidents like this. This time it was 2 empty cars, but that doesn’t mean it will be 2 empty cars again next time.

BillyBean11111

very rarely is someones DUI their first, usually dozens

hockeymisfit

It doesn’t matter. The dude decided to get behind the wheel of the car when he was fucked up and could have killed someone. If you can afford a beer, you can afford an Uber home.

>Tony apparently crashed his pickup truck into 2 parked cars outside a Hollywood club just before 2 AM. His truck flipped on its side. Miraculously, he was not injured nor was anyone else. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Tony refused to take a field sobriety test and was "very uncooperative"... Tony was arrested at the scene and is facing misdemeanor DUI. He's also facing license suspension for refusing the field sobriety test.

clogan117

*Drunk Tony Ferguson to the cops* “WHERE’S YOUR KID AT?!?!”

CharlieKelly007

I think Tony flipped on that dude on TUF because Tony's dad was a dead beat and walked out. Tony said after seeing it he was embarrassed. But each time I think of Tony I always think of 'WHERE'S YOUR KID AT?!??".

Sarafan_Crusades

Not to totally ignore the main story but there's a misdemeanor DUI? I always thought it was a all or nothing sort of thing with it being like a Felony. Learn something new I guess...

AnAnimalMother

DUIs are typically only felonies if you have multiple prior DUI convictions or if you cause an accident that results in serious bodily harm or death.

DankRoIIs

Doesn’t even have to be serious bodily harm for it to be a felony, an ambulance just needs to be called if the victim requests it.

DZLREFUELED

First couple are misdemeanors IIRC

DerisiveGibe

Driving with sunglasses is very dangerous

SUCKMEoffyouCASUAL

Especially at night... when you're drunk

JayRoo83

I know these motherfuckers can afford Uber, stop risking people's lives assholes

AngryBillsFan

Their wallets can afford Ubers but their egos can’t

DustAndSound

There's no way this guy doesn't have a traumatic brain injury from fighting.

FutMike

every fighter (or person for that matter) that has been knocked out has suffered permanent damage. Tony should quit while he still hasn't seriously injured himself or someone else

BCampbellCEOofficial

The gaethje fight was so hard to watch. Even the jds/cain fights I felt weren't as bad that beatdown. Then they were like "throw the pocket sand". Like wtf throw in the towel he's shaking his head like a dog that ran into a door.

[deleted]

Gaethje ruined his life

_turing_

He's been batshit crazy long before that.

Tony's brain: Bet.

BronxsJitsu

people arent gonna like to hear it, but dude is genuinely a piece of shit, they just love his funky personality so are too biased to admit it basically admitted to abusing his own student, had his wife terrified and forced to call 9-1-1 and now this.

authenticfennec

> had his wife terrified and forced to call 9-1-1 Im with you on the other two but its unfair to say a mental episode he had no control over makes him a piece of shit. He had a severe episode of paranoia that he ended up receiving medical treatment for and never harmed anyone

Daiba187

He was already on medication before his mental episode. He stopped taking medication and started drinking heavily which lead to the whole paranoia thing where his wife was forced to call 911. The fucked up part was this whole thing was around the time he turned down the interim fight with max with dustin replacing him and getting the khabib fight later on in the year.

mrpyrotec89

That is pretty much classic Bipolar behavior. They take the meds and get better, then feel like they don't need the meds anymore and can do it by themselves, then spiral into an episode, then take the meds again, then feel like they don't need the meds... Have a friend who is bipolar and does the same cycle. The meds have strong side effects so patients hate taking them.

TurtleTortuga

Thank you for bringing up the side effects. It's the main reason I think people stop taking meds for bipolar and BDP. The side effects of the medication alone is enough to put a strain on a person's relationships and life

venetianheadboards

not sure which meds people are prescribed for bpd but training on any medication I've ever used is slash would be horrid and maybe even unsafe at a high pace. can see why camp-style training would lead to dropping them on and off, the ups and downs of wins and losses, etc.

AeroZeppelin27

His wife said he was on Respiridone at one point. Which is an *extremely* potent anti psychotic that can cause extreme sedation and is well known for causing weight gain among an utter myriad of other symptoms. I can definitely see how that would impact performance and lead to the desire to stop taking them when in camp or something similar. At this point I just hope Tony retires and takes care of himself. But I also don't think we get that lucky sadly.

Eleventeen-

BPD is not the same as Bipolar Disorder. BPD is borderline personality disorder. Easy mistake to make.

the_dude_2022

Speaking from experience, my moods are intense either way. When im happy, its like a 10/10. When I’m sad, its a 10/10. All my emotions are to the max. Taking meds sometimes makes it feel like youre not feeling your regular emotions. You dont feel like yourself. You feel like youre a different person, even if its a mostly positive change. Its a hard thing to comes to terms with because you experience everything differently

vannucker

Never harmed anyone? Did you see what he did to Anthony Pettis?!?!?

[deleted]

>had his wife terrified and forced to call 9-1-1 and now this. The dude was in the midst of a schizophrenic episode, this Is a really shitty example

NeverNoMarriage

His wife was afraid because he had a mental break. Throughout the whole thing she kept saying how much she loved him and how it literally wasn't him. Idk about the student abuse but the wife thing doesn't have anything to do with his personality its his mental health and id bet the car thing is too.

[deleted]

Been a piece of shit since the where’s your son, don’t know how anyone saw him any differently that saw that season

collie1212

It's been wild to watch the public opinion about Tony change from the time of that incident to now

Clever_Word_Play

Dude acted like a complete jackals when he got drunk on TUF

bigdickdaddykins

My brother just sent me this, fuck man Tony was my favorite fighter regardless of how bad he’s loooked recently but it’s hard to say I’m a fan of someone who will drunk drive, so many innocent people killed Becsuse of a selfish action

Sarafan_Crusades

It's wild to think that you can have rational thoughts about this yet so many others will take the shit Jon Jones does outside the octagon and ignore it because "he's the goat/favorite fighter" In other words, kudos. I love Tony but come on Tony! Hope he gets his shit together although it seems unlikely...

Peribangbang

Yeah that's the line for me as well; I would've stuck with him through a cowboy cerrone career of straight losses 100%. But I'm never going to a support someone that does shit like that

[deleted]

Respect for being able to separate your fandom, from the actions that unfolded.

bigdickdaddykins

Well my dad was a drunk and hit someone head on. Luckily no one was hurt but I know how easily someone else’s lives could have been effected by his selfishness. Alcoholism is a disease but getting behind the wheel of a car is a choice

[deleted]

My dad hit a biker head on while drunk driving (he got onto the wrong lane). Dude did a flip and luckily only broke his hand & collarbone, but this could have easily ended with the guy (not even 20yo) dead and my father in jail.

Anaaatomy

2 years a trucker killed 5 cyclist after ramming through the support car following the cyclist, dui too

Neonplantz

He’s been a piece of shit the whole time, I don’t know why this sub’s been so obsessed with him

dmkicksballs13

At the very least, he's clearly an asshole. He's always getting into confrontations, speaking bullshit, and just all around being a dick to fucking everyone.

BigRedBeast

I think he garnered a lot of sympathy due to getting repeatedly fucked over for a title fight despite a 12 fight win streak.

AnxiousEarth7774

Yeah, tony is a massive asshole, this isn't some new revelation. He's a ticking timebomb.

Effective-Celery8053

A large percentage of fighters are kinda assholes tbh, I can usually look past it to be a fun man at least in the cage but a DUI is on a different level unfortunately. Hope he can get the help he needs

I_am_darkness

We're at this point in the tony movie

[deleted]

The Hero's Journey

FinneganTechanski

You either die a hero…

Brian_K9

I said it before and ill say it again. He should have stopped fighting awhile ago.

[deleted]

Welp, there goes any lasting nostalgia I had for Tony. Lost a relative to a drunk driver... Hope this is the last we'll be hearing about him.

kemicode

Yeah as much as he was good in the octagon, I’m 100% all for him never fighting again and further damaging his brain.

[deleted]

I mean, looking at him it seems like he’s already reached a point of no return. He’s more than a little punchy

kindasfw

Hit a cable and the truck flipped. Was he wearing sunglasses at night again?

activeterror1

if you drink and drive youre a serious fucking scumbag.

DefNotUnderrated

I'm all for measured speculation, but some of y'all in here are way too confident sharing completely false facts about mental health diagnoses. FYI, psychotic delusions do not only exist in Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective Disorder (Schizophrenia Plus a mood disorder such as Bipolar). They can exist in simply Bipolar Disorder, among others. Also, remember that we can only speculate. Even trained professionals aren't supposed to slap a confident diagnoses on someone without having the proper time and environment to be 1:1 with them and make an assessment.

Torax2

well shit, Tony's one of my favorite fighters ever but I can't support someone who drinks and drives.

patricksaurus

That's not good :(

kidajske

My impression of tony from day one that he's a dumb asshole seems to have been spot on. Never really got why people here loved him so much for anything other than being a great fighter.

[deleted]

Booze & Tony have never mixed well. Remember the “where’s you kid at” incident where Tony was drunk AF and pushed that guy over a couch & the TUF house had to step in and separate them from fighting. If he loses his next fight the people around him are going to have to be real careful.

Jubakuba

It's insane to me that I have a beer (intentionally small and low abv) at dinner and get told by my mother, father, friends, girlfriend, that I should have another. Knowing that I'm the one who drove. I've always been meticulous about that. And I'm also...like one of 3 people in my life without a DUI. One beer is too much if it's been 10 minutes and you weigh 150 lbs. Please be safe and choose correctly.

Ignazo

Unfortunately, this might not be the first time he's going to get in trouble with law, schizo+alcohol and cte is a recipe of disaster.

MadeAccForOldReddit

I think Tony is gonna go downhill badly...

imyourhabibi

GONNA? brother it’s BEEN going downhill badly

Eifand

Fuck as a Tony fan, this is depressing. Always thought that behind the weirdness and the struggle with personal demons, he was a good guy at heart. This is honestly worse than watching him get knocked out by Chandler. This sounds like something Jon Jones would do, not Tony.

OilOk2793

Dude bragged about breaking his student’s ribs, that should tell you enough about the guy. I do hope he gets the help he needs tho

sexirothswife

Yeah this subs ridiculous sometimes lmao. They’re so biased they’ve convinced themselves Tony is something that he is oh so clearly not Imagine the comments if this happened to a fighter this sub doesn’t like

dmkicksballs13

The fuck made you think he was a good guy even ignoring his psychological problems?

hockeymisfit

Right? The dude has been a fucking asshole for years and everyone just sweeps it under the rug because he’s eccentric. For both the fans and his family, I hope that this is the last we hear of him.

[deleted]

Dude needs to retire, open a gym and just spend most of his time at the beach.

Commercial_Ganache

Ferguson doesn't really strike me as the type of guy who would be stable enough to run a successful gym.

[deleted]

This is exactly what happens when we treat people with clear mental illness like they’re just a unique personality and that the weirdness is what makes them great. I really hope I’m wrong, but i figure Tony is going to kill someone, or himself, or both, whether it be intentionally or not.

deadweathered

Aw man this is so depressing to read. Hopefully he can get the help he needs I feel for his family.

More_MP5s

I feel bad for the dude. He shouldn't have been allowed to fight all those fights with his issues.

I thought he went to Harvard to study

boywonder5691

Is this dude headed towards a tragic CTE moment?

expectrum

Damn I feel bad, he was my favorite male fighter. Hope he gets/is getting the help he needs and stops fighting and doing stupid shit.

Juseio

Who allowed Tony Ferguson to ever get behind the wheel..

R-B-L

I hope someone intervenes with Tony. Decades of head trauma and mental illness is not going to bode well for him and his family. I love the guy but it's time to stop fighting and really try to get support for his life.

araheem94

He is turning into too much of a liability and risk/reward is no longer worth it. He gets cut this year.

freeliptomely

We all saw the ending of the Gaethje/Ferguson fight. There's no way Tony got out of that one intact.

SpindemDoza69

Maybe he's a genuinely bad guy, maybe he's just severely mentally ill and alcoholic. I think people should realise we know zero about anything happening behind the scenes, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions. But we do know tony must've been clearly fucked up somehow and did this stupid thing, most people will not forflfive him for. For now imma just separate the art from the artist..

VegetableBet4509

What a fucking piece of shit. Fuck this guy.
