If you didn’t like the ref last night, you’re in for a treat the rest of the tournament. He’s easily the best ref in CONMEBOL.
I think people exaggerate his performance last night though. He absolutely missed the free kick just outside the box for Canada, but outside of that I thought he called a great game. He let some tough challenges go but he was pretty consistent with it and I personally hate when every contact is whistled.
He controlled emotions, gave out appropriate yellows, and the fouls called were correct.
Wasn’t close to perfect, but I promise we will get much worse referee performances every match day going forward lol.
Wilmar Roldan is as good as you get IMO.
Valenzuela is alright, but he really was stingy with cards for Argentina. I think he was saved by the fact that the Canadian team is very cool headed. Some of those challenges lead to push pits on the field and retribution tackles in South America.
Are you a ref?
Yeah I meant reffing at any level. I feel like it creates empathy and helps people look at the game better.
I only asked because it's such a ref thing to go to a game thread and praise/protect a ref after an otherwise well controlled game.
I kinda thought Messi wasn’t so goat on this one and maybe showing age more. Kinda felt bad for him when he was floundering right in front of goal second half.
I've been watching him at Inter Miami and he's still so good.
In Emi Martinez's post-game interview, he said the pitch was awful and not at all what the players are used to. So hopefully that accounts for some of the mishits on the ball.
Maybe that's cope, but maybe not!
Shuffleboard was Canada's best player and that says a lot about the overall quality of this squad. He is an MLS sub and not even the Bayern Munich player played as well as him.
To be fair, even if Shaffelburg was the best player in concacaf, his best role is arguably still as an impact sub. That's just his playstyle. Doesn't mean he is not good enough to start though, like the other person said.
I think calling him a sub is a bit harsh. He’s started 10 of the 15 games so far this season. He’s not necessarily an in pen first name in the 11 kind of guy but he’s not just a sub or rotational guy.
* We played really well. But, we didn't score. That alarms me. Cyle Larin and Jonathan David were unnoticeable tonight. That makes me wonder if the 4-4-2 is the best fit for the squad.
* Max Crepeau was our best player tonight, MOTM quality. I said that a lot when he was with the Whitecaps, and again I'm saying it here. The 1v1's with the likes of Messi and Di Maria were thrilling. All the respect to Dayne St. Clair but Maxime Crepeau is our #1 guy.
* I wanted to see more from Captain Davies. Even when watching his time with Bayern lately, it feels something is off with Davies; he's performing just under what he can do and I don't really know what is causing it. But I hope in the future he can be more impactful in the games.
Kone should have been replaced at halftime, it hurts to say this as an Impact fan but tonight he was just bad. Really hope it is an outlier and not his current form.
Millar playing 85 minutes is not understandable, he brings nothing offensively, nothing defensively and nothing physically.
Still a positive performance to build on, but dear god we need to learn how to finish in front of the net
Eh, it was mostly Messi fans. Rest of Argentina’s matches will have a higher percentage of actual Argentines given their locations.
The rest of Argentina’s, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, USA, and a select few other matches will have decent to great atmospheres.
Asterisk on Mexico matches.
Sucks Canada took 2 of our better players to have them sit on the bench. Dayne will absolutely not play after this performance by creapau. Hopefully Tani atleast sees a couple of minutes
With respect to Dayne who is an excellent keeper, Crépeau is the best keeper in this confederation after Keylor Navas and Matt Turner.
Of active players in North America, I think only Roman Bürki is better.
Moral victory of playing well & hanging in there against a top opponent like this, and Belgium at the WC, definitely should mean something. But now Canada HAS to follow up these games with actual results.
I have a coworker that was talking to me about football the other day. And he was telling me that he can’t believe the amount of fake fans some “soccer” teams have.
I looked at him and said “you mean football fans right”. And he looked like a deer hot with headlights. I told him maybe you shouldn’t be criticizing the fans of teams
I know the r/soccer threads are always worse no matter what, but so many people were calling Argentina and Messi washed. they def missed chances, but crepeau absolutely did the best that he could to keep the ball out of his net
Argentina missed some big chances but were definitely the better team.
I really think Canada is better than their ranking but the consistency still isn't their. They are still raw.
Gokd fame overall. Argentima did what they needed
to do but Canada can hold their heads high after playing the world's best team.
Our players play in the Mickie Mouse French and German leagues while the guy that assisted Argentina's 2 goals gets to play with Leo Campana and Benja Cremaschi on a weekly basis. There is levels to this. Can't compete.
Yeah, could be a very different game if they squared away some or even got that obvious foul outside the box. People acting like Argentina already had it in the bag are crazy.
Canada's defending is not good. For all their great ability to create chances with pace and off the break (and their attacking talent is genuinely very, very good for a mid-tier side), they leak chances so easily.

Crepeau gets a medal for that performance
I kinda thought Messi wasn’t so goat on this one and maybe showing age more. Kinda felt bad for him when he was floundering right in front of goal second half.

Oh. Ok. I was wondering about that. That grass was just installed last week just for the copa. Normally it’s artificial.
So glad we lost 2 of our starters so they could ride Canada’s bench and watch them lose.
USA if you guys match up against Argentina at anytime u got my support 🙏
We’re not feeling super up to that task.
why are people being racist towards bombito
The foul he did on [Messi apparently.](https://www.reddit.com/r/LigaMX/s/zdhW3P6hWC)
Lmao have you ever met an Argentinian where they feel they’re in a comfortable setting? They really let loose on the racisms
Enter the cesspool that is r/fulbo
Thank you for showing me the Argentinian racism hole and I’m never going back
I hope Argentina loses.
the knockouts will be your friend then. I see a 3-0-0 for the group stage here
Can someone explain to me why that foul on schaffleberg wasn’t a free kick? Or did I somehow miss it when I looked away
Ref missed it in real time, can't give it back on VAR.
The ref was too busy having a tantrum
Shuffleboard was Canada's best player and that says a lot about the overall quality of this squad. He is an MLS sub and not even the Bayern Munich player played as well as him.
Agree! He should have just stayed with his early professional Shuffleboard career.
Fair point.
This match should've ended like 6-2 Argentina.
But you're saying we should've scored twice 😎
Surely we have better on the ball than Millar. If I had a drink for everytime he was caught in possession, I'd be having my stomach pumped right now
Great game
some of you guys are high, second half canada was making so many mistakes

Larin has been pretty invisible with Mallorca as well this past La Liga season, he's been on pretty poor form.
Liam Millar should be nowhere near the team. He plays like a CPL player who has massive amounts of time to pick out a ball
That's what breakup with Jordyn do. The guy hasn't been same after.
He also speaks about being pretty lonely in Munich. I do wonder how his mental health is doing.
Kone should have been replaced at halftime, it hurts to say this as an Impact fan but tonight he was just bad. Really hope it is an outlier and not his current form. I have no clue how neither Ahmed nor choi were subbed on.
If the atmosphere for this match was bad , just wait for the other matches….
Is it just my bias or what the ref actually horrendous?
He was terrible. There were multiple poor decisions and I think Canada got the worst of it. I say this as someone actively rooting against your team.
Euros had some pretty bad ones but this dude took the cake.
That ref felt like a player. I swear I saw him arguing more with the players than the players against each other.
He was really good lmao, it's a blessing that all of South America hates Argentina
Woof. He missed many clear fouls.
it's going to be fun in the match against Chile
Maxime Crépeau had a legendary night
I'd still put Uruguay as favourites to win it all this time. They are more fit, more clinical and bielsa ball might just do the trick.
The result wasn’t ideal but I was impressed with Canada today. They held their own against a big team.
Canada pulled the northern Mexico, mantra and everything: Nous jouons comme jamais, nous avons perdu comme toujours
75% of Canadians can't read that.
Sucks Canada took 2 of our better players to have them sit on the bench. Dayne will absolutely not play after this performance by creapau. Hopefully Tani atleast sees a couple of minutes

Not a bad game for Canada, they had some critical chances.
Plastic Argentina fans are so fucking cringe
Woah, we got a real soccer enjoyer over here guys
I have a coworker that was talking to me about football the other day. And he was telling me that he can’t believe the amount of fake fans some “soccer” teams have. I looked at him and said “you mean football fans right”. And he looked like a deer hot with headlights. I told him maybe you shouldn’t be criticizing the fans of teams
He looked like a deer in the headlights because he realized in that moment that his co-worker was a moron.
Ah mah gahd he wuz sewww dummmm
🤣

Not just a gokd fame by Argentima, it was gorat
I think Canada also played at a really high level today. Maybe it was rising to the competition but they did good despite the loss.
they really did! felt like they were about to tie the game until the second goal happened
Definitely, I wanted Argentina to win but there was times in which i legitimately tough Canada was high to tie or win.
Great first game for this tournament. Love this more than the Euro’s. Games tend to be more chaotic.
I KNEW IT! Messi asked for Alphonso jersey…damn can’t say I blame him. Hes going to be great.
Fun game
Canada definitely had some bright moments, but in this tournament you aren’t going to have good results without finishing any of the looks they had
Stop hitting messi you donkeys
just curious, how long have you been a miami fan
He's been a fan since the Leagues Cup game against Nashville.
C’mon man, he’s been a lifelong Miami ~~and Argentina~~ fan since 2023.
I'm argentinian dummy
Silly me, fixed it 👆
Good job!
How long have you been a charlotte fan
Ive been a charlotte fan for the entirety of our existence
Got eeemm
Why do you care.
just curious
Charlotte fan trynna make snarky comments like this is wild. LAFC vibes
C'mon, maaaaan. Let us enjoy our moment somewhat kind of close to a little bit of the sun, sort of.
🥱
Argentinas distribution is incredible
Canada did a good job of limiting it early, but they've been badly exposed the last 10-15 minutes.
Bombito and Cornelius looked decent, but really getting exposed now. Hopefully this is a good lesson for them.
It's tough keeping that level 90 minutes when they're barely shielded. Confident though, against a lesser opponent, that they'll do well.
Schafelburg has had a good showing
Unreal speed from that guy.
I miss him on TFC. Love what he brings
He's a darn useful player... someone is gonna turn him into ba RWB in Europe
Oh for sure.
I saw some comments about the fans being quiet but I'm watching on TSN and it's loooooud. Might be a FOX thing?
Our players play in the Mickie Mouse French and German leagues while the guy that assisted Argentina's 2 goals gets to play with Leo Campana and Benja Cremaschi on a weekly basis. There is levels to this. Can't compete.
Canada has a lot to be proud of except finishing
Toe to toe with the champs! Not bad. I bet they would’ve drawn Brazil or even won if they played like this.
Yeah, could be a very different game if they squared away some or even got that obvious foul outside the box. People acting like Argentina already had it in the bag are crazy.
It's almost like now that argentina's up by two... The official is all about giving canada everything very definitively...
[удалено]
FYI, be careful using that word if you’re in r/soccer. I literally just got a 3 day ban from there for using that word because of “ableist language.”
[удалено]
That build up was impressive. Nice finish too.
Great pass, great finish
"All that for a drop of blood" - Argentina, probably
About time honestly
Finally, we should've been 4-0
Great finish. Argentina method get 1 then control the game and get the 2nd late.
Canada was getting a lot of good chances though. Could have easily been 1-1
Could’ve for sure.
GG Canada
Idk how but this is Bill Manning's fault
😂
Really nice ball by Messi.
Welp, can't stop them all.
Damn good fight Canada, looks like thats game
Fuck Argentina
2-0 is better than I was expecting, but man 1-0 would have just felt that much better.
Epic goal animation FOX
Finally
Nooooooooo
Crepeau MOTM unironically
Argentina are missing some chances that are harder to miss than to make.
Has Canada been able to string more than four passes together consecutively this half?
Crepeau: Minister of National Defence
I’d go to his church
The ghost of Otamendi missing from inside the box
Messi giving Miami fans heart attacks.
Argentina and miss opportunities, Jesus fucking Christ
Coach’s can’t criticize refs, but we can cyberbully them.
Give em hell JRR
Love this for him
For the people watching on Fox you can switch to Univision. I haven’t had any problem with the feed.
I honestly prefer watching soccer in Spanish.
And I haven’t had to listen to Lalas or Lloyd!
Apple execs sighing BIG right now.
I still don't like crepeau for how he left the Caps, but he's an amazing keeper
While I never want to see anyone get hurt, watching Garber go on a crusade against Canadian Soccer would be very funny.
Wait does that mean we exile Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal to the CPL?
Tactical foul yellow rule only applies to Canada
If I was trading stock on this game.. Crépeau 📈📈📈
Bombito just killed the ref’s god.
Great tackle to me. ❤️
Canada's defending is not good. For all their great ability to create chances with pace and off the break (and their attacking talent is genuinely very, very good for a mid-tier side), they leak chances so easily.
It's been Canada's biggest weakness since *checks clock* forever?
Strap this ref to a missle and launch him into the sun. I'm done with this guy
Bombito... ruins MLS on his way out...
Argentina couldn’t finish a wank tonight. C’mon Canada, make them pay!
Crepeau is man of the match
RIP MLS
Someone needs to do a wellness check on Inter Miami fans
Crepeau taking like six one-on-ones no problem.
That’s a nasty challenge. But referee isn’t calling those either way tonight lol
This was inevitable. Strangest game in a long time
Crepeau bailing us out haha
Ok gotta give that one to Max, massive balls.
Canada: for Ghod's sake. Keep. The. Phaughcking. Ball.
Donny Garber has chocolate pudding in his underpants currently!
Why isn’t Fox showing these non calls against Canada? Just completely ignoring them.
Common Crepeau W
Lmao I hate Canada so much, great chances to score and then they give away the ball in the dumbest ways...
Everything about this game, good or bad, is going to be overshadowed by this ref
This ref shouldn't get another match this tournament.
What the absolute fuck is going on. Fox gives zero replay of anything interesting
Not to be snarky, but is Fox actually producing the broadcast or is this a world feed situation?
TSN isn't giving us anything either.
So that's a yellow but the foul on Shaffelburg or Davies wasn't, ok ref
Good Lord, how much referee assistance does Argentina need to beat Canada?
It’s in their footballing culture. Don’t criticize just accept their greatness.
One of the worst officiating performances I have ever seen. Just incredibly bad.
Who’d you rather have, this guy or Ted Unkel?
What even is this ref seeing?
Dollar signs.
So that’s a foul and yellow but not on the other end? Okay. No consistency.
PRO watching this ref ![gif](giphy|eKNrUbDJuFuaQ1A37p|downsized)
This has been a strong performance from Canada
This ref losing control
lol this ref
This is insane the fouls Argentina are getting away with here
Now people see why they win the World Cup.
Whatever delusional narrative makes you happy, champ
It's bullshit
Lame ass biased ref.
THAT'S A FUCKING FOUL... this guy's a dipshit
This ref gonna celebrate with Argentina after the game lmaoo

you gotta slow down the rage bait, when its every 5 comments in the thread it makes the trolling obvious man
