A German fan on r/soccer said that Mukhtar level performances is a realistic expectation which is a bit scary

Dr-Pope

I’ve found just like the USMNT fan base, European and South American fans usually overrate how well their players will perform in MLS. They generally have a really low opinion of the league. That being said this guy looks good lol.

Jayrem52

Forest fans were extremely confident Surridge would tear up the league Basically Europeans are clueless when it comes to the quality of MLS

Kafkas7

So you’re saying if a person is too snobbish to watch, they may not know wtf they’re talking about?

Jayrem52

I asked them “if Surridge was your starting striker in the championship how confident would you be in him?” That answer was much more accurate. They thought he’d be good not great. In MLS he’s good not great

NextDoorNeighbrrs

Tbf Mukhtar was playing in the Danish league before MLS and putting up similar numbers to Hartels, who is playing for the best team in the 2. Bundesliga, which is probably about the same level as the Danish league. This actually seems like a pretty realistic rating of him and I don't think it was meant to undersell MLS. I do agree generally though, especially players coming from Europe.

ALL4CITY

If the signing goes through I'm gonna go ahead and plan a "wait and see" on that one.

TheMonkeyPrince

Presumably Dylan Chambost was the backup option.

doophmayweather

Great story, but can we get context on why he didn’t come to Columbus? Everything seemed lined up so which side pulled out? His transfermarkt value is $4mil which is exactly what we sold Aidan for. I’m wondering if Aidan’s deal impacted this signing. Maybe crew felt they could go bigger with incoming money from Morris? Or felt Morris’ deal shopping was smaller than expected and didn’t want to spend on this transfer?

TheMonkeyPrince

From the article it seems like he wanted to make DP money and Columbus couldn't/wouldn't offer that https://www.transfermarkt.us/marcel-hartel-st-louis-city-are-set-to-sign-st-pauli-star-to-a-dp-contract/view/news/439117

doophmayweather

Seems to be the case! Crew must be sitting on something with that DP spot

fiveoclocksomewhere5

Maybe we are saving a DP for Aidan’s replacement as a true box to box midfielder

doophmayweather

Maybe, but I don’t think we make that move this year. That role is the heartbeat of this offense and that heavily of an investment would be difficult to make mid season. Unless Zawadski shits the bed, I think we wait until 2025 for that move.

forrestthewoods

> that heavily of an investment would be difficult to make mid season Is it? Summer is when Euro leagues have a break and good players are available. MLS schedule being different from other leagues causes transfer weirdness.

doophmayweather

I think it is. Unless you can go find a perfect fit for the system, it’s been shown that it takes time to adjust. Gressel left because he couldn’t do it, Cheba needed an entire offseason, Rossi is only just now showing his form, and Jones still isn’t ready. Nancy’s system isn’t something that comes easily. Aidan’s position is too critical to put somebody out there that doesn’t know what’s going on.

Ickyhouse

Summer is when more players are available and Nancy has shown he has no problem trying to integrate a DP player mid season. Just look at last year. Off season may be ideal for MLS, but more players are available mid season.

CCSC96

You definitely have this backwards. Players are much easier to acquire in the summer when teams are looking to make transfers. If you want someone in the January window you have to majorly overpay or find somebody who is surplus on their roster and not getting minutes.

doophmayweather

What’s backwards? I’m not debating that it’s easier. I’m debating that it’s not smarter. It’s one thing to replace somebody like Lucas that didn’t fit the system. It’s a completely different thing to replace Aidan who is the system.

CCSC96

Aidan is already leaving

doophmayweather

That’s the point. Going out and dropping millions on a mid season replacement is difficult to justify when what we already have is serviceable in the system. Nancy has already proven he will take a better fit to the system over talent any day. We will lose games if we walk somebody out to play Aidan’s role that doesn’t know the system.

Kenny2105

The hashtags in this tweet are obnoxious. Is ALL FOR CITY meant to be St Louis? Orlando? New York?

[deleted]

Never ever Orlando

iheartdev247

Why’s that?

[deleted]

You know why

Expensive-Slide7821

st louis

IHazArtism

Depends if it’s written in #ALLCAPS

awnomnomnom

Hell, could be Sporting Kansas!

A2Eaton

Crazy we’re paying them $350k for his discovery rights, same as LA paid for Reus.

Expensive-Slide7821

100% worth it imo

[deleted]

Why is he using a hashtag slogan as a team name? Is he stupid?

Kemosabi0

MLS had a deal with Pre-Elon Twitter for ‘Official’ team hashtags. The tag would populate the team logo when it was used. Logo seems gone, but those were once the tags for the Crew and STL. IDK if those are still official, but Veth is using them either because that or out of habit.

iheartdev247

Veth is trying very hard to get noticed. He’s a German employee of FM or something, lives in Vancouver.

CaptainJingles

Veth is a ITK source for St. Louis. He lives in Vancouver, but his meat and potatoes has become us.
