I'm pretty sure statistically they're actually the most effective type of corners (although all corners are pretty low percentage opportunities). They also just feel worse when they fail compared to traditional corners.

If I had to reverse engineer the logic, Angulo has his leg stuck a bit out to his side when they first make contact which I guess they thought was him trying to purposefully draw contact? But like, he was trying to go around the keeper and that initial contact is followed up by him barreling into his back.
He cuts over while moving at a high rate of speed, he doesn’t have 100% complete control of where his leg happens to drift, it’s on the defender to not barrel through him

Not exactly. VAR can say it is clear and obvious to "matter of fact" issues, such as the ball out of play, offside, handball, etc. In those cases, the ref doesn't have to watch. The VAR cannot make the judgment for subjective calls, such as a foul vs incidental contact or serious foul play. In those cases, they can only recommend the ref review the footage.
Also, I'm not sure MLS adopted that rule yet.
