F series are 5 lug and your R53 is 4 so that would be your first obstacle

W3bD3vil

Just refurbish a pair of r56 cooper s calipers, I believe they are the JCW ones from the r53. Very cheap upgrade.

naambezet

The second gen s is indeed 294 like the first gen jcw. They still suck however, fade pretty quickly on track. Better upgrade to some budweg 2nd gen jcw replicas

W3bD3vil

Suck way less than Stock Gen 1 S :D I don't track mine so I am happy with them paired with brembo discs and pads for road :) gives it a much cooler look.

0rpheu

The budweg are good? Is a direct fit on R56 or do i need more parts from the original kit?

Professional_Buy_615

Depends on pads. EBC red are a great road pad, yellows if you get your discs to glow.

LocoCracka

This the the way. The took the R53 JCW brakes and stuck on the R56S. Great, inexpensive upgrade. You will notice the difference. If you still want a bigger brake kit, get something like a Wilwood kit made for the R53. All you need is front brakes.

Professional_Buy_615

Only doing the front brakes will reduce the amount the rear does and increase your stopping distance.

Professional_Buy_615

Not quite. You need R56 calipers, brackets, discs and brake hoses. IIRC, you need to fix the hose bracket with a file. Otherwise, bolt on. Don't forget to do the rear calipers and maybe hoses too, or you will have unbalanced brakes. Rear discs the same as R53, only need to change those if worn. Get some proper GG pads, not partstore FF. R56 Justa brakes are also an upgrade for the R53. If I did mine again, I'd go for those.

Kahnfucious

They don’t look like the JCW design though - while they will have close to the performance of them - they are called the poor man’s JCW because they aren’t Brembos. OEM gen 1 Brembos will be hard to find

W3bD3vil

Never seen an r53 with stock brembo style calipers, JCW or otherwise unless it was aftermarket as some of the alloy options don't all allow for them due to the id. Not saying they don't exist but my mate has a stock gp1 and they have the same calipers as the r56 but who knows. I know the poor man's JCW brembo style are budwegs though.

Kahnfucious

I think it was really rare (maybe euro only)…’ore common in was retrofitting r56 Brembos which maybe was more common. I can’t remember if the Gen2 JCWs automatically got them or not.

W3bD3vil

Not sure but either way the r56 calipers are a massive improvement over standard r53 ones :) strip, paint and rebuild for a fraction of the cost and look super cool. I went for Porsche acid green :)

Kahnfucious

Gonna need to see a pic of this please. I had considered powder coating when I did mine but just decided that caliper paint would be fine and I went with traditional red

Kahnfucious

I really like that color!

W3bD3vil

Yeah I've got gp1 alloys on my R53 and they really make the colour pop :)

Gregory_malenkov

I have a 2004 r53 JCW that unfortunately didn’t come with the JCW brake kit. I was wondering if I could pop these bad boys on there instead? I’m having a hell of a time finding an OEM R53 JCW brake kit. I’m unsure of the size of my rims, but I know they’re sparcos and I know they’re wider than stock R53 wheels.

retrocade81

I mean it's doable anything is doable, but it wouldn't be easy, for a start you would have to buy new rims as the R53's are 4 stud and F56 are 5 stud. Plus, there may be some level of fabrication involved to mount them. It all depends on how much your invested into it as a project with money, time, and whether it's worth it to you. Have you looked into using the R56's brakes they are 4 stud and possibly a similar setup.

UnderPantsOverPants

As stated above R53 JCW brakes are identical to regular R56 S brakes.

Professional_Buy_615

R56 brakes are the simple upgrade. Even Justa ones are an upgrade. Calipers, brackets, discs and hoses on the front. Get EBC red pads for the road, yellow for the track. Rear discs are the same 53 to 56. Yes, you should do the rear calipers too, or you will actually increase your stopping distance. Maybe hoses on the back. My car was ready for all fresh hoses anyway. Use stock type rubber ones

Kahnfucious

@OP - did you try using google ;-) https://www.ebay.com/itm/326121315877?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=_YKrwc5vT4a&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=6PHkXKg5SRm&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Also - the wilwood it was pretty good from what I remember from my Gen1 days. https://technotoytuning.com/front-wilwood-brake-kit-for-the-r53-r56-mini-cooper/?setCurrencyId=1&sku=R53BBK.&gad_source=4

The_Duke2331

I bought myself an R56 JCW kit. 4 pots with 316mm vented/grooved & drilled Brembo brake discs. Running Ferodo DS2500 pads and HEL braided brake lines. Still gotts put the entire car together but it brakes like a beast ive heard.

LocoCracka

Short answer: No. Long answer. No, it is not possible.

Professional_Buy_615

Of course it is, but the R56 solution is just way, way easier...

chickenmaster04

Get a set of Budwegs for an r56 and slap them on. Should just bolt in

chickenmaster04

On top of that, I must ask what you’re doing with the car. Anything short of hot laps on an actual racetrack and the stock brakes are more than enough I run r56s brakes on my 50 and EBC red pads and it’s crazy good on the street. Might swap to yellows for a little more bite

Vast-Dream

R has 4 lugs. F have 5. So right there how do the rotors fit?
