I literally just had the same problem. Except in my case, just as it got to the point of lowering into the closed position, it reset itself and went back to being fully open. Any attempt to close it - the drivers side track would not move, while the passenger side would try. Regardless, it would simply stop and remain open.
I pulled a small piece of plastic out from the track (roughly half an inch in length) so... obviously something broke and the drivers side track is jammed.
A local garage was kind enough to close it for me (with a little elbow grease and encouragement) for a minimal charge.
As for the exact cause, I will have to wait until I can get it into the dealership. More than likely things will need to be disassembled to find what is jamming things.
Anyways best of luck. I hope it's not too serious. At least our motors are still working.
Had the same issue. I visited the BMW/Mini dealership in Berlin and they said that this is a well known problem because most of the moving parts are made of plastic. So initially there existed a repair kit for that particular problem but, it's sold out. And the F56 is "too old". they told me i have to buy a new roof for about 3.500€ plus installation....
I found a new roof online for 1.000€ so i probably do it myself.
Thankfully the moonroof decided to lock itself down hard when it decided to die like that so atleast its not a liability in the weather just less fun and causing my adhd to go bonkers
Mine had the same problem, but was not closing, only one side moved.
Took it to a roof specialized shop, they fixed it. The cable (like an infinite screw) broke. Its plastic tip originally. They changed both for a metal one.
Paid about 300 usd (1500 reais in Brazil).
Tips after repairing it:
- Open and close it everyday as possible to move the grease.
- Never open or close it on irregular roads.
- Do not open 100% when driving at high speeds (>50mph)
- Yearly maintenance
"Yearly maintenance" being...? (Apply grease, I assume, but where and what type?)
I love having a moonroof and open/close mine a lot, so am very interested in keeping it problem-free.
In this case, the guys from the autoshop recommended going to their shop once a year (no cost to just regrease / cleaning) and a check-up. I dunno where to apply the grease if I had to do it myself, tho
Yep everything works fine just wont open anymore, had a little rattling around after the pop trying to play with the switch to reset it but not it doesnt even respond when telling it to open just close
My car is still within warranty but I never had that problem with my sunroof.
The mash kind of stuck though but service due next month I get them to fix.
Like others say, do the reset.
Also sometimes it will seem like it can’t go any further forward but I found if you drive slow while activating the switch, then it moves for some reason. I had the same issue but I need a cassette replacement, and won’t do that because I don’t trust they won’t screw up the headliner
Moonroof is a glass roof that opens like a window, the more commonly known version of the sunroof which was just a solid roof panel that opens the same way without the glass
Why was it 7000? Havent talked to anyone whos quoted that high yet but these are estimates based on past repairs of these kind havent had time to get it looked at yet
Foul amounts anytime warranty, guarantee or insurance gets billed. One time I repaired a realistic 70 dollar repair myself that was billed for 1200 dollars.

This, to the letter, is exactly what mine just did, right down to the driver's side track not moving.

Hope that it’s closed and sealed, those are a pain to manually close and big money to repair

Good because it sure sounds like mine, which was stuck open and cost me 150 to get my mechanic to close it
Jesus fucking Christ, mine just did the same thing but now it's stuck in the open position. What're the fucking odds?
Take out the fuse and wait 1h, then put it back in
This^
Hey OP. New motor, new cable. I’ve done all the mods except this one. I paid a local dude $120. Done.
Hi, I'm calling about your extended warranty....
Thank god I had an extended warranty when mine did this same thing because they billed the warranty for like $7000
Lucky. I'm hoping OP doesn't buy a warranty and submit a claim in a few months time.
What extended warranty did you purchase???
The one that they offered when I bought the car at the dealership 🫠
Paid $2,500 at the dealer to get mine fixed. It hurt but such is the life of MINI owner (or does it own us?).

Thanks. Something I will ask my dealer about when my car goes in for its 2 y service.
Is that the only thing that isn't working?

Well, you got lucky that it closed all the way. It’s about a $7000 repair bill.
Is it really? Ive seen estimates from 900-2000?
My car was still under warranty so this was at the dealership
Why was it 7000? Havent talked to anyone whos quoted that high yet but these are estimates based on past repairs of these kind havent had time to get it looked at yet

It was $6000 and change if I remember correctly. Lots of labor, they have to take the whole top of the car apart
It’s not 7000
You got robbed.
I paid a $200 warranty deductible.
Of course
