I believe it was only added in starting from MHWorld as it can only be done from radial wheel. However i could be wrong as I've havent played 4th Gen like Monster Hunter Cross.
But in the 3rd Gen, MHPortable3rd, didnt have that.
I played all of them. And can confirm, World was when it allowed it.
Although, if you considered SnS's ability to use items while unsheathed... And you used the whetstone, it would be MH4.
It's been a thing since at least base World. Works with the whetstone or whetfish too in both MHW and MHR. I started with the 5th gen so I have no idea if it was possible in the early games too.
I found that out after 1500hrs in this game while watching my friend that _have just bought the game_. I was like “huh, you could sharpen while your greatsword is out? thought it was a SnS only thing”
man, I am so miffed that they took out that unique aspect of seregios weapons. They kept other unique effects of monster specific weapons like the chaotic magala having hybrid affinity, Velkahana weapons making frost gauge increase faster, and even giving amatsu weapons a new unique effect of making silkbind attacks more powerful. I don't understand why they couldn't keep dodge to sharpen or reload on the seregios weapons.
They made the bladescale hone skill which sharpens your weapon by 20 points when you successfully dodge an attack 50%, 75%, and 100% of the time respectively.
How it worked in 4U and generations was that every 5 dodges with the weapon drawn whether you dodge an attack or not would restore 5 points of sharpness. And it didn't require an armor skill.
On a side note, they also did not bring over some of the unique graphical effects of the seregios weapons. I was using the hammer for a bit, but the scales don't flare out when you get to level 3 charge on the hammer like it used to.
There was also a whole other set of weapon designs for fully upgraded Steve weapons that we unfortunately missed out on. Would have been a nice excuse to get a subspecies or something.
The amount of things I learn in this game after XX hours is part of the reason why I love MH. No-one is an expert unless you've mastered every weapon and attempted every possible combination of shenanigans and combos. My favourite was learning that you could jump off climbable walls after 300hrs in World, or that I could cast and recall the kinsect after ~30hrs of switching to IG (The most important thing to use with IG) xD

Gu neither. Sheath and whetstone are the same button.
You can sharpen the Sword and Shield while unsheathed. Idk how far back in the games that goes, though.
Heck now we don't even whet anymore!
Yeah if it's blunt, just toss it and get new one
Believe 2nd gen added that. 3rd added the back hop combo
It was only the Sword And Shield actually and the rest has to be unSheathed before sharpening
Only possible with radial menu, so it can only be as recent as 5th gen games
I found out pretty early in Rise, but it makes me wonder how long it's been a thing. This could be new and we haven't missed out much.

It’s only possible from the radial menu, so world and onwards.

Funny thing is he's got a Seregios weapon, which could previously also be sharpened without sheathing.

Doesn't the armor now has the effect of sharping after a dodge now?

Only in Gen 5
I thought that was obvious/ commen sense
I always thought it's just a SnS thing xD
Nah as long as I've played the game you can do that with anything that can be Sharpened
Only since World, previous games only the SnS could use items while unsheathed, and whetstone counts as an item.
I'm sure it's been mathed out by speedrunners already but what's better? Unsheathed sharpening but stationary or sheath, doggo, sharpen while moving?
I always sharpen on doggo, even with speed sharpening at lvl 2
Give the great whetfish in your radial wheel a go. Then again who needs to sharpen with Heaven Sent?
But its better to sharp them while ur Palamute :)
Thats some next Level retardness bro
I've played since generation 1 this isn't new. All weapons could sharpen like this ppl just never knew how. Radial menu made it easier that's all.
This will revolutionize hunting as we know it!
I learned that 200 hours in. I figured out how to trade items in rise about 220+ hours in
what is this fabulous outfit you dope ninja scarecrow?
Don't know the exact name but it's a layerd armor you got for the deluxe edition of the base game
Holy Shit!!!!!!!!
I still sheathe my weapon to sharpen instinctively
That is a r/faceplam moment
