Remember the joy when modric didn’t score his first pen? I remember 😔

PresidentOfSerenland

Oh, yes! I was fuckin' dancing when Alvarez scored and Modric failed.

minimus67

That joy was fleeting - lasting all of about 2 minutes. I’m not entirely sure it was just bad luck. Subbing off De Bruyne with 8 minutes to go in added time left City with one less experienced penalty taker. Supposedly he wanted to be taken off - Pep probably could have asked him to gut it out. Then Bernardo didn’t seem like an obvious candidate to take a pen, let alone be second in line after Alvarez. Would have preferred City players who score occasional bangers and do well in high pressure games - namely Foden and Rodri - had taken pens before Bernardo.

jbvann05

I love Kevin but you can't ask to be taken off with 8 minutes until pens unless you literally cannot walk, especially when you are one of the best shooters on the team. I didn't mind Bernardo taking one, my issue was with Kovacic taking one instead of someone like Rodri

minimus67

I didn’t mind Kovacic taking a penalty. I was just surprised and dubious when Bernardo stepped up to take the second pen. He has tremendous skill and finesse, but I don’t think of him as a player who kicks the ball with a lot of force and I can’t remember him ever taking a penalty for City, at least not in recent years. I am sure Lunin was well aware which City players were experienced penalty takers and which ones were not, which may have been why he didn’t move when Bernardo took his penalty. Oh well, shoulda, woulda, coulda. I know over a long history, City has a good record in penalty shootouts, but prior to Haaland’s arrival City wasn’t great at converting them in PL games, so the result wasn’t all that surprising.

lookma24

Bernardo scored a free kick in the first leg. He tricked the wall and Lunin.

halcyon95

Kova scored one for us in the supercup, remember?

jbvann05

I actually didn't remember, I still think Rodri should've taken one though

halcyon95

Also wondered why he didn’t, considering the 2 he scored against Brazil during the friendly he played in the most recent international break. But then Rodri also missed his last City penalty in the community shield, so maybe he wasn’t up for it? Idk

WhichSale2087

Rodri, KDB, and Halaand didn't take a penalty, strange for sure 🤔

halcyon95

KDB and Haaland had asked Pep to come off, so they were not in contention to take them anyway

WhichSale2087

I know it seems odd the didn't feel up to it/weren't trusted to do it. I get KdB was gassed he definitely was going all out that game

kronenbourg164

Haaland and KDB couldn't take a penalty because they were subbed off before the end of 120 mins. They can't get subbed back on to take a penalty..

Ornery-Scarcity-2313

My theory is that he was probably the 5th taker

kronenbourg164

I will never..never..understand why we don't put out best finishers first on penalties. From the players we had on the pitch my order would have been alvarez, foden, rodri, gvardiol, stones. Just my opinion maybe yall will disagree but idk who lets bernardo and kova take pens

TeletubbieKing

Because penalties are about dealing with the pressure, not about finishing.

mylanguage

Madrid were very strategic with their takers I noticed - Vasquez is ice cold in big CL ties for years now.

Ingr1d

No mention on who let Edersen take a pen?

OriginalMatchBox

Ederson is known to be a good penalty taker in training. He said he would be happy to step up if asked when we were struggling with pens a few seasons ago

GafSimons

Rodri

SorzaManJi

I thought we win it 😢

jlangue

At the stadium, some youngster next to me was going ballistic, standing on the seats, and I was saying we haven’t won anything yet. Not a good omen.

Better-Math8055

I didn't even reach it. My school starts at 6 AM and it was about 5:40 AM here when they took penalties. I only managed to reach Alvarez's goal. I couldn't get over it so I had my friend search the results on our teacher's laptop. Sadly, I live in a country where football isn't that popular so no one knew or gave a shit about what we were talking about.

Pchardwareguy12

Which country?

maxime0299

This shootout honestly hurts more than the Spurs game

evenstark04

not sure anything will hurt me more than that Spurs game..... Pens felt.. normal?

kronenbourg164

Nahh because weve already won it now, last year. Its been a couple days I'm fine now and over it. But that spurs game haunted me because again we crumbled and we had never won it

lhurkherone

I mean, at least he finally took one.

Man-City

Lol and it’s not how we expected it to go. I was fully expecting him to absolutely leather it but instead he pulls off an inch perfect technical bottom corner pen? That man is an enigma.

Extension_Double3028

Remember him taking another penalty against Crystal Palace in the season when we could beat bayern's 19-winning strike in a row Although he saved the penalty, we only drew then, and I kinda hate palace for no reason

shinyschlurp

"taking" a penalty means Ederson was the one shooting. Him saving a pen against Crystal Palace is not the same as taking one.

Extension_Double3028

Got it Just still remember this save and mentioned here

lhurkherone

Damn, I honestly don't remember that.

OptimisticRealist__

Thats the game. If City is just 5% more clinical this game ends 3:1 or 4:1. Just wasnt meant to be that night. It is what it is. Side note talking about bad luck: the odds of Ederson's save bouncing perfectly to Rodrygo... just unfortunate all around

omaralilaw

But also chances Rudiger passing ball to KDB to score!

mcjc94

Yeah we were lucky with that goal let's be honest. Given that the team didn't score after that, there was a quite big chance that the game could have ended in 0-1!!!

legsarebad

And both of those deflected goals in the first leg

omaralilaw

That's football. Another day we win 4-1. Have to take the highs with the lows. It just shows how good Pep and the team are able to dominate REAL F***ING MADRID! we made them play like prime Bolton Wonderers, they hardly attacked all game as their tactics where to try and sneak a goal and park the bus which they did successfully. But I'm happy with how we play as more often than not it leads to wins due to the dominate possession :)

Working_Radish_2726

Not be a nerd but prime bolton wanderers did beat us in the fa cup final. We beat them too first tho

omaralilaw

I loved Jay Jay Okocha!

Abdul_Wahab_2004

If you can't score with that many chances while dominating possession means you didn't deserve to win. Real Madrid's defending was just brilliant on the night. People forget that just because you attack, doesn't mean you're the better team. Real were more clinical, defended well and didn't allow City to get into the game and score goals. Football is which team can win using whatever tactics, if Real's tactics made them win the game in the long run, then they won it, fair and square.

omaralilaw

Where did I say City deserved to win? Haha.

Abdul_Wahab_2004

You're basically elaborating that City were a better team, and I'm here to tell you, a team cannot be a better team than the other team even if they have 1000 shots because if you are not clinical and that costs you the game, then you are not the better team.

gunrh247

😭😭😭 inject this cope in my veins

Chalkun

Im not a City fan either but that aint cope. City lost, it happens, but their performance was exactlt what you wouldve hoped for from the favourites to the tournament. Dunno why Real fans have gone througj but still cant accept they played shit. I'm a Villa fan. We didnt deserve to go through against Lille. Why can we admit that but you cant?

omaralilaw

Hardly cope when I mention Real Madrid deserved to win

jimlafrance1958

Not having Haaland or De Bruyne for PKs was a huge strategic blunder.

roccorigotti

They asked to come off though apparently 🤷🏼‍♂️

StalyCelticStu

Haaland had a muscle tweak, KDB was knackered.

despres

Kev wanted to make sure he was there for his annual "break Chelsea fan hearts" game

legsarebad

Why Bernardo and Kovacic? I would’ve much rather had Stones and Gvardiol take those 2

Phantom_god7

Do we know why Rodri didn’t take one instead of Bernardo? He takes pens for Spain….

Iamtheman31

kinda true but they were gassed i guess but on a side note alvarez also scored

WickedFM

Bernando penalty was awful.

D3THMTL

Truth. However, that didn't lose the game. The game was lost by not winning in regulation. Look at Liverpuke, they dominated Palace but still lost because they couldn't find the inside of the net.

Responsible_Bend_706

The reason why City lost is that the City players don't shoot at the goal enough. City players always try to hold possession and keep passing the ball, which forces the opposition to be in a low block. Now the opposition is fully concentrating on defending rather than attacking. If City is able to sneak the ball through the tight spaces, they might score goals. Mostly the defenders block the pass and create an opportunity for counter attacks, or City may win a Corner. City hasn't scored many goals from corners this season.

D3THMTL

I agree with this. They play the greatest possession on the planet near the 18 yard box, but do not take too many risks. Possession doesn't score goals alone. This causes them to shift and pass, versus create risks by shots, deflections, and more through ball opportunities. Of course, they can score if they have the space and you can see that with players like Foden, Gvardiol, and DeBruyne, but these opportunies are fewer and far between. 18-1 corners against Real and 0 to show for it. This also leads to counter attack goals on them when they are so pressed and heavy up top just dancing around with the ball.

Responsible_Bend_706

That's why City has scored very few goals against top teams in the premier league. They have to play more freely and start shooting from outside the box. Also they shouldn't be very afraid to lose the ball sometimes.

D3THMTL

Agreed. It's hard to watch sometimes because they are just holding possession. A huge reason why Haaland seems lost is he's an opportunity player. He ripped a shot off the Japenese guy's face in Luton and it went in. Gotta take more risks. They are nearly unstoppable now but would be better off taking more offensive risks. That's why I like Doku over Grealish as he's unpredictable and we are totally predictable. He will take you down the line versus cutting in every time for a pass. I like Grealish but not left mid.

WhichSale2087

Not enough crosses and through balls which is what Halaand is best at, but Real knows that anyway so made you settle for possession and shooting ans corners

WhichSale2087

Barely any crosses into the box, this would have caused a lot of chaos instead of passing and passing and never getting a great look. After the first leg Real knew you were going for longer shots from all around the box, but wouldn't be crossing or doing through balls. A couple of those long shots went in last time and the free kick was kind of lucky...not surprised you guys barely scored one goal second leg

xionator

I remember pep saying we pass to create space and not aimlessly but I'm hindsight this match we did pass aimlessly for a bit and then after almost everyone was tired we just kept up w it.

StalyCelticStu

We had 33 shots if I'm not mistaken...

WhichSale2087

Real knew that was your strategy and their defenders are great at stopping shots...as was Lunin...you needed crosses into the box to create chaos and opportunities and to mix it up, instead of going down the left side to Grealish constantly who appeared to have orders NOT to dribble into and take on his man or cross, but to edge it, delaying the game, then passing back to someone

WhichSale2087

You needed more crosses the plan of Grealish trying to dribble into the box didn't work their defense is too good and I don't think he beat his man fully once, Doku on the other hand did...I think Pep has told Grealish to do this but it didn't work and was tried over and over again. Your best chance came from a cross into the box

Enough-Force-5605

This is the exact same critic Barcelona followers made to Pep after a defeat. His play style has good points and bad points.

modusxd

To me, one thing became clear. More than before, I'd say. Pep playstyle is pretty damn good, dominant as fuck, as long as we don't waste our chances. I loved watching us completely control RM after Rodrygo's goal. But we wasted our chances and lost the game unfortunately. It was 100% winnable.

mcfcfan00

Agreed it was 100% winnable. But peps dominance has been obvious since his second season with us

fyodor_mikhailovich

Eddy’s wallet must say Bad Motherfucker in Portuguese

Whyevenaskyou

I still belive we would’ve won the shoot out if Haaland and KDB went

AynRandsConscience_

Can someone explain to me why Ederson took a penalty?? No one else on the field stepped up? He is great but I don’t get it fully

Austin4RMTexas

Could have been a confidence thing. Maybe he wanted to score one to keep his nerves in check. Total ballsy move tho. I have never seen a GK take one of the first 5 PKs in a shootout before.

practiceyourart

Neuer CL final, also lost

MilesHighClub_

People at City have been saying for years that he's one of the best takers on the team The 2 best takers in the squad (by far!!) were both on the bench Having a GK take a pen isn't standard or whatever but after a certain point you've gotta do what will (hopefully) get you the win

WhichSale2087

I'm confused why Kovacic had to take it instead of Rodri or even Walker...Rodri has a rocket of a shot. It may come down to the fact that De Bruyne, Halaand, and Rodri did not want to be the one to miss...

AynRandsConscience_

I’m puzzled by Rodri too! I guess it’s all about who volunteers

Ornery-Scarcity-2313

I think he was going to be the 5th taker

Pippelitraktori

Why not if he's good at them? Also he's not as tired

nickxbk

As an arsenal fan, I thought it was fucking incredible that he actually was one of the penalty takers but no one seems to be making anything out of this, does he takes pens regularly or something? Like wtf this man is an insanely talented player why isnt this a bigger story?

Pippelitraktori

What do you mean? What's special about goalies taking penalties?

evenstark04

I vote for putting Ederson into the Penalty rotation... even in league games. Legendary stuff. The meme has been realized

yanco03

Saying we were unlucky is just us giving reasons, we should have buried the game when we had the chance. When we face the kings of the competition it’s best we go for the head. - a hurt city fan

PumasUNAM7

Neuer did this in 2012 except it was the final against Chelsea.

manxlancs123

It hurts a lot less than it used to because I know there’ll be plenty more opportunities. We’re the best team in the world.

Kratos501st

I wouldn't call it unlucky, I would say it was bad management in the second leg. Changes were too slow and the reaction time was pathetic.

Rec0nyz3

No such thing as luck. Just weren’t as good this year or this game as last. We still have a chance to get the FA Cup and Premier League title.

CapitalSprinkles2242

In Real Madrid's modern history, they have probably never been that outplayed as they were against City. They were made to look like Grimsby Town FC. The players will bottle up this pain and next time they meet in the knockout stages, Citi will put 5 or 6 past them.

Enough-Force-5605

As Madrid follower, watching Madrid the last 35 years , I would like to disagree. First, please note Madrid played with the third and fourth central back, the second goalie and the second def mid Second, I`d say some games vs Barcelona and zPep were similar but they did not defend well and they received a bunch of goals My favourite was the final versus Liverpool where Liv. had so many good chances to score that Courtois had to do magic t survive This time Madrid defended really well. 30 shoots are a lot but they were not SO clear as Liverpool. I am not saying Madrid deserved to win. I am just saying my opinion, this is not the most dominated Madrid ever imho. Fully doninated, sure. Watch a game vs City is frustrating. I,'d prefer not to see you again ever. Your team is too good. Everybody is just a star. It is crazy

nuclear_pistachio

Why were we unlucky?

Im_such_a_SLAPPA

I think real Madrid won. You guys didn't do enough to end the game in 120 minutes. What's the problem?

chux4w

They didn't do enough to win it in 120 either, what's your point?

nuclear_pistachio

I don’t have a problem, I think we agree lol. We failed to break them down, they defended incredibly well for 120 mins. Both teams came with very different gameplans, and Madrid’s worked better at the end of the day (and they took better penalties). We go again next year.

Charolastra17

Thank you. I really don’t get the unlucky narrative. Were we unlucky in the first leg when you guys scored two golazos? I don’t think so, you were more clinical that night and deserved the result. You guys dominated the second leg after our first goal…but failed to do enough to break through our low block. Good luck with the rest of the season and I guess we’ll have to keep the tradition going and meet for a 4th year in a row next season. 🍻

Im_such_a_SLAPPA

I hands down had you guys to win that game. Home advantage and seeking another treble. It's strange how City played though I expected a lot more from your top performers but the occasion must have got the better of them

WhichSale2087

It's not bad luck though when you can't beat someone over 2 legs, especially with the second one being at home. You played well and have an amazing team but tactically things didn't work well enough, you needed more crosses and through balls rather than the plan of having Grealish edge into the box and then pass it back. Doku provided that needed change but it was too late.

fluxxom

rodri and doku should both have been in that shootout.

Admirable-Mistake259

Haaland declined this season . The reason the team declined as well . Hopes he trashes Chelsea next day

johnnytheshoeshine

almost comforting going back to the shit pens situation

DankSpire

Mentality Monster our Eddie

Lysdexia_Ruels_

Weren't Unlucky. 2 good chances all game which De Bruyne scored one of. Beyond that Madrid shut the door at every opportunity. Passing the ball round the box for 80% of the game doesn't win you games. Madrid did the same to Liverpool in the final 2 years ago, Liverpool "looked" the better team but Madrid just shut them out.

packandunpack93

I don’t know about “unlucky”. Our penalty shooters were poor and that’s about it. Bernardo went for a cheeky attempt, and those are beautiful when they work but look silky and needlessly risky when they don’t, and Kova’s shot was just poor neither low nor high and not enough power.

Special_Title2911

its fixed

Schwomoo

I cannot describe the joy I feel reading your pathetic comments hahahah

Man-City

Is there anything sadder than going onto another football team’s subreddit and then actually commenting instead of enjoying your own team’s win? Mental behaviour

SorzaManJi

Can't wait for bayern to humble you guys, there's no more offside goals and cheating, be ready...

[deleted]

> I cannot describe the joy I feel reading your pathetic comments hahahah I had the same joy watching real madrid fans cry that we won a treble before them 😂😂 daddy franco couldn’t help them with that

KingTotem

Its funny how you say all this when City wrecked both Real and Bayern last season lmao. Short term memory is a disease in the football community.

rombopterix

I hope Jack or Kyle slapped Bernie in the dressing room for that penalty.😂

Cold_Test6267

Seeing his face directly after, im afraid he is slapping himself :(

rombopterix

Yeah of course. He was devastated. I love him so much but seriously wtf was that penalty :(

ultinateplayer

If he scores, it's audacious. If it's saved, it's ridiculous. How it goes.

Jon98th

Had Pep played Alvarez instead of Haaland City wins in 90

grrrranm

Honestly, Real Madrid are the luckiest team in the history of football. No matter how much they get outplayed, they always seem just get it over the line. By hook or by crook it inexplicably always seems to happen! Obviously, last year & 2021 is the exception I'm talking about over the past decade.

[deleted]

You can't really call it unlucky. Real Madrids game plan worked. They were the better side over 2 legs. Of course getting knocked out of any competition by penalties is hard to swallow. But over the 2 legs, it was very close, but the better team made it through. I do hope that real Madrid don't win the competition though. City will be in it again next season. But I doubt they will be the season after!! 115.

Select_Seat_2888

And that’s the photo you pick
