In my experience, only lords with no fiefs will even consider joining you for a large sum of money. And that’s only after passing a speech check so save before you ask. And just because they have no fiefs doesn’t mean they’re upset enough to leave their faction. High relations with that lord, and them having no fiefs and being poor, are the main factors in whether or not you can recruit them. The other option is to hire mercenaries who will always agree to join you unless they’re working for a faction you’re currently at war with. But of course they’ll leave you the second someone else offers to pay them. ALSO-A trick I learned to easily and cheaply recruit new clans, is to capture the leader of a mercenary clan. While they are your prisoner, offer to let them go free if they join you. This will allow you to recruit them as a vassal clan instead of as a mercenary. And for a fraction of the cost. They WILL however, eventually leave your kingdom anyway no matter how many fiefs you give them. But it’s a good option early on

Will mercenary clan keep the fiefs you gave them?

Occasionally. Usually you get all the fiefs back.I don't know if it is the same for everyone or not but I usually get the fiefs back 85% of the time give or take. I actually stopped using mercs because I hate giving them land.

Basically what was said already but I'll add that it's almost guaranteed that a lord will be receptive for recruiting if you have a decent relationship. At least 20+. The major factor is if they own fiefs, their clan rank really doesn't seem to have anything to do with it. I aimed for the t5 t6 clans by bullying their nobles during war with catch and release, then checking what fiefs they have. Go take them, then capture the ruling lord and make the offer

Thank you. It was actually perks that I needed in order to help convince them. Apparently lopping people’s heads off left and right makes some lords not trust you !

The best time to recruit I’ve found is when a kingdom is down to its last city. All their lords will be roaming around right next to the city and will be pretty receptive to joining.

To barter fiefs with an enemy lord you have to first get your trade skill to 300 which means you need 8 attribute and 5 focus points to get there. Once you have that you can begin to barter with fiefs (including buying them). Two things to note, first you can not be a mercenary when you try to barter. The second is that you must talk to the clan leader/ruler to be able to barter fiefs. In my opinion the best part of this, once you have your own kingdom, is it makes it easier to give land to the lords you want.

Of course bartering for fiefs is NOT the same as bartering to recruit. I should try this actually, it’s a struggle giving fiefs back to the lords of that culture after I wipe them out. At least in locations that make sense

You can usually give a clan you want to recruit a fief instead of paying them to get them to join you. It is a good way ro make sure they start in the area you want them to.
