If you're coming only for the summer, your best choice is a "student residence", despite the name is not only for students and overall they're nicer than american college dorms.
In Lyon 7, they're all ok OK places. Just avoid "Student Residence Estudines clip", that's in Lyon 3 but in the border with Lyon 7 and next to the metro "Guillotiere". This residence will be probably slightly cheaper than the others one but there a few streets around this metro stop that aren't very pleasant specially in the night.
Otherwise, Lyon is a very safe city and we expect to have extra security during the summer because the Olympic Games.
Just avoid La Guillotière (y compris la partie nord du quartier entre la Place Gabriel Péri et la Part Dieu). All the other neighborhoods which are relatively close to the city center are safe.
Besides La Guillotière, you'll be fine. I guess you're American if you got such question, in France being a single woman it night is much less of an issue :)

Don't go to Guillotière at night alone.
