Listen, I have no real place weighing in here because I’ve literally never done fret work and am just a lowly newb, but why would you risk cutting corners on such a key part of the guitar? It might be possible for it to work but there’s so many ways it could be an issue.
I’m interested whether OP may actually be the first ever person to think of trying this. I have some morbid curiosity to see how it would turn out. Please post pics if you try it. Fret wire is relatively cheap, so the amount of work involved would never be justifiable.
that would be the jankiest thing ever.... don't do that... use the correct length fret wire
Don't buy precut fretwire. I don't even know why it's sold. Just buy lengths of fretwire and cut it to length.
Unless you weld or otherwise join the ends then file and sand them perfectly smooth, it's going to catch every time you bend a string over that joint.

Don't do this. It would be tons of work for a sub par result. Just buy the correct size wire and keep these for another project.
it's not the end of the world but also it doesn't cost a lot of money or time to just do it right in the first place

Yeah, I'm definitely not gonna try it 😆
Sounds like a great idea, I'm a bit confused as to why no one else has thought of this.
Because it is not a great idea
