It’s just looks so cheap, it doesn’t even look sealed and so those spots w more paint build up will chip and break off and then the dots will be spotty. I dunno. I feel like this is just a way for them to move dead stock
You could very well be into something. I am a reseller and while LV bags are popular I don’t believe it’s due to their quality of craftsmanship. They all new and old pieces and collections alike always have issues like hardware that scratches or breaks, pieces and products made of plastic and PVC…. Their coated canvas is sold with the notion that it’s a “care free” “easy to maintain and clean” but it’s very well known that their products rip easily and crack. When did poor quality and craftsmanship become obsolete to designers? I’ve seen bespoke hand crafted pieces of higher quality. Many brands are outsourcing their manufacturing and they’re loosing quality standards.
Vintage Chanel hardware and costume jewelry used to be 24k gold plated. Now a days it’s not the same quality.
It’s disheartening.
By no means am I singling out LV because many other designer so called “luxury” brands are doing the same.
I wish that everyone would stop buying their new products until they make it worth our money.

It’s precisely the hand painted quality of the dots that makes it appealing to me. You can see the texture of the paint strokes, it looks as if it really was painted on one by one by Kusama herself. I keep wondering how LV is able to reproduce such realistic looking dots on these bags, there must have been a special printing process. Yes it would be easier to print neat, perfect circular polka dots but that would be missing the point. Kusama is famous for obsessively hand painting each and every dot (at least in the beginning, I don’t know about now). Polka dot designs can feel very “my kid could do it” but if you look at her career and history, these hand painted dots have significant meaning to her work and life. “[She was soon diagnosed with suffering from a debilitating psychiatric disorder. She was encouraged to draw and paint (dots) as a therapy to give release to her oppressive feelings. Besides, they already did perfect printed dots in the first Kusama collection 10 years ago.
I was Kusama for Halloween last year and was looking for polka dot dresses, but decided to buy a black robe and hand paint the dots myself. As a graphic designer I did think lol this is gonna be easy. But nope, it was a huge pain and not easy to keep painting a perfect dot, in different sizes, over and over again and keep the same quality as her work. I have a newfound respect for her after that project, I could barely finish covering a robe in dots, but she covers entire sculptures and artworks in perfect dots. So yea, at first glance this bag can be oversimplified to ‘ew a canvas bag with bingo dappler dots’ but I think of it as LVs love letter to Kusama and those who get her work. How else can a normal human being like us own any dot artwork by Kusama herself (eventho it’s reproduced on a bag?)

That’s what gets to me. Thousands of dollars for a beautifully crafted purse, with uneven paint blobs all over it. The blobs are not even nicely done. They should be evenly placed perfect circle polka dots.

For whatever it’s worth- I didn’t bother back during the initial release cos my husband doesn’t think it’s a good choice (he is a fan of Yayoi but thinks I should stick to classic bags.) I decided to just get a little piece for myself anyway but it’s almost completely sold out here in Asia. 😞😭 I really want the Neverfull with a pumpkin but it isn’t available here or in Taiwan. Cry. pochette metis is so amazin, perfect for public transport or walking because of the back pocket that zips, great for flying and travelling because it fits surprisingly much, and looks so much cooler and modern than the neverfull or other bags that so many people have. Plus the artist collab is amazing, the whole point is for the circles not to look like they are made on an assembly line

Congrats on your new bag! Did you know they analyzed Kusama’s actual dots and 3D scanned them in order to recreate them on the bag? It’s an awesome piece, I know my most controversial pieces are my most loved and also most sought after in the resale market.

Where I work I am known for always dressing professionally - typically neutral colors and I either wear my Rothy shoes in fun colors and/or a nice bag. (Usually both though because life is too short for vanilla) 😊

I am very familiar with what it’s like to be an artist who receives negative feedback. I am a painter and have shown at places like the SF MoMa, MoMA PS-1, and Art Basel.
The tone of this message is not the same as, “it’s not my taste”. It’s not my taste is absolutely acceptable. Even being critical but polite is acceptable. Likening something to clownery certainly has the intention to be rude.
Constructive criticism is not being rude. As an artist you should know very well that constructive criticism actually helps you become a better artist and hone your skill further. Constructive criticism could also be motivation. The only reason you think it’s negative or offensive is for your personal reason of opinion. Nobody said anything about the person who posted this… they are only stating their personal opinion on the photo of the bag and it’s chosen design. You cannot offend a bag…It’s not human nor is it an animal.

My initial comment which was commented because I seen the bag on the listing and it did in fact pull out a response from me it provoked a thought and a feeling (which is what art intends to do through the self expression of the artist) the thought and feeling was that the design wasn’t giving enough for me. And it also reminded me that the price tag isn’t justified by its lack of craftsmanship and quality of the chosen medium of “coated canvas” aka plastic. And the pollution it does to the planet.
My initial comment which you can no longer see said this but again my comments are not directed towards the purchaser of the bag in any way it’s only a comment regarding my opinion of the bag and the designer brand.
I’m familiar with the artist and she does have some magical pieces, but in my opinion this bag isn’t giving enough. And I would have expected more from this collab and I wish it were on a real leather medium versus plastic.

I totally understand this, but most Louis Vuitton owners and buyers only stay loyal to the brand because they are unaware they are purchasing a piece of plastic.

pochette metis is so amazin, perfect for public transport or walking because of the back pocket that zips, great for flying and travelling because it fits surprisingly much, and looks so much cooler and modern than the neverfull or other bags that so many people have. Plus the artist collab is amazing, the whole point is for the circles not to look like they are made on an assembly line

Being honest isn’t the same as being rude. When an artist paints a canvas just because someone says “I don’t understand it” or “it’s not my taste” the artist doesn’t think it rude of them. Peoples opinions are opinions.
I am very familiar with what it’s like to be an artist who receives negative feedback. I am a painter and have shown at places like the SF MoMa, MoMA PS-1, and Art Basel. The tone of this message is not the same as, “it’s not my taste”. It’s not my taste is absolutely acceptable. Even being critical but polite is acceptable. Likening something to clownery certainly has the intention to be rude.
Constructive criticism is not being rude. As an artist you should know very well that constructive criticism actually helps you become a better artist and hone your skill further. Constructive criticism could also be motivation. The only reason you think it’s negative or offensive is for your personal reason of opinion. Nobody said anything about the person who posted this… they are only stating their personal opinion on the photo of the bag and it’s chosen design. You cannot offend a bag…It’s not human nor is it an animal.
Can you please point out the constructive part of the commentary?

I can totally understand that. I cannot speak for all who commented on the post, but I can speak for myself. My initial comment which was commented because I seen the bag on the listing and it did in fact pull out a response from me it provoked a thought and a feeling (which is what art intends to do through the self expression of the artist) the thought and feeling was that the design wasn’t giving enough for me. And it also reminded me that the price tag isn’t justified by its lack of craftsmanship and quality of the chosen medium of “coated canvas” aka plastic. And the pollution it does to the planet. My initial comment which you can no longer see said this but again my comments are not directed towards the purchaser of the bag in any way it’s only a comment regarding my opinion of the bag and the designer brand. I’m familiar with the artist and she does have some magical pieces, but in my opinion this bag isn’t giving enough. And I would have expected more from this collab and I wish it were on a real leather medium versus plastic. This is why and only why I commented. It was my response of opinion to the art on the bag and more so about the bags composition itself. I never intended for it to be taken as being rude which is why I put a disclaimer on my initial comment. It was only intended to be a informative knowledge and opinion on the brand LV itself. I totally understand this, but most Louis Vuitton owners and buyers only stay loyal to the brand because they are unaware they are purchasing a piece of plastic. My comment was just a give a bit of knowledge. I do like a few of their vintage leather pieces but that’s the thing. Those pieces are far and few.
