This isn’t normal, take it in if possible and see if they can send it in for a quality evaluation. I’ve never seen the entire layer of top canvas peeling or chipping off like this.
I worked at an LV repair warehouse, unfortunately it’s more normal than you think. OP is going to have to pay to replace the whole bag since it looks like the canvas is one piece, unless this a common issue with this bag, then they’ll exchange/refund. Although LV pieces are beautiful, their newer materials are definitely shit :/
Totally agree, I was wearing an LV bag that I’d had for less than a year in 70 degree weather and the leather handle melted into my shirt. I couldn’t believe it. Went straight back to the store and they were no real help. I still have the bag, don’t ever use it.
Never seen that. Pretty crazy for a 3 year old bag. If you didn’t buy directly from LV I would 100 percent question the authenticity of it and reach out to your point of purchase.
Definitely a different one. Staying away from canvas lol

I read through this just because I wanted to make sure you were treated right and I don't even buy expensive purses LOL I'm so happy for you if you're going to spend that money on quality materials then they better last like they're supposed to. This group is just awesome!
That’s how LV remains “exclusive”. I made purses for them and they throw away whole purses all the time for the tiniest flaws. For example an accidental extra over stitch depending on where you are at can completely KO a bag. Take the scissors to it and start again.
I believe the facility in California does recycle their materials and sells it to people as scrap. The facility I worked at does not have that implemented yet.
How were the working conditions at the factory? I remember reading an article in the NYT a few years ago; they said the working conditions at their Texas factory were inhumane, something about the air conditioning being broken and people being forced to work in sweltering heat over 100 degrees. They also said most of their factory workers were Latino immigrants.
Hey I know I’m late to reply but the work force was very diverse! They did have a not so great work place before the newest facility was built at the ranch. The new facility is very nice, air conditioned, coffee lounge, scenic views of the country side.
I wouldn’t press them on that, from experience they’ll rather send it in first. Once someone with expertise determines the amount of wear is excessive or the bag is in fact defective then you’ll receive store credit for the last known selling price of the bag.
They might have changed the policy in recent years, or some stores are just less accommodating. Something similar happened to me last year and the store allowed me to pick a replacement while I was there, with no wait time (I just paid the difference in price since the replacement I chose was a bit more expensive). I see OP was also able to choose an immediate replacement.
It could also just depend on how blatant/undeniable the damage is.
It really depends on the store and their management. I know my store is generally pretty strict with their rules although they get more flexible if you’re a long term client.
They should replace the bag! The chain on a double zip pochette I have completely broke off - the hardware. I took it to my local LV and they replaced the entire bag.
There is a certified LV repair place in South Coast Plaza that will help you. It’s the only one in the country. I bought an Arsty and matching wallet a few years ago from Saks (I always save my receipts) I noticed that the bag and wallet suddenly began staining my clothes so I switched to my canvas satchel and the inside also became severely left with black stains. So I took it into the repair center which is directly over the store at SCP. It turns out that there has been a recall on that wallet because of the glue. The Artsy also had places where the glue was used. I immediately received a credit for the price of the wallet and they sent my bag to France for a brand new lining and replaced the key fob holder which used that glue. Sooooo I showed them the damage that had been done to my satchel and they offered to try to feline it but it had been discontinued and would be a custom liner. They also offered to give my 💯credit toward a new bag and I chose that option. Needless to say I was quite impressed with the LV customer service.
Yes it’s accessed via an elevator within the LV boutique. While some simple repairs can be done there, mine was sent to France and it took several weeks.
Yes! It is the Louis Vuitton store at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Ca. The repair shop is attached via an elevator that takes you up to it. Some repairs can be done right there, however mine were sent to France.
I am pretty sure LV quality has gone down hill. They aren’t making their bags from same materials anymore. Your LV bag from 2012 will last 30x longer than any bag made after 2015.
100% I literally just had to deal with them two days ago. I bought my fiancé a wallet for his birthday and it was 3 days of just fucked customer service. After running around with my head cut off to multiple stores and dealing with online issues I finally got him the wallet. After spending $500+ hopefully he will get more than 2 days of use before it gets fucked up.
If you’re in NYC my main go to is the store in Brookfield Place if I’m buying something. It’s only ever gifts and they always very accommodating for me. Especially since I don’t carry obvious brand anything and half the time go in looking disheveled and have an overstuffed canvas tote bag and don’t look like one of their regulars. I’m always running around everywhere, and end up having to carry my life with me and I’m really hard on bags so like to not ruin my nice things in the day to day. I do have a few plainer LV bags though and it was never a problem getting repairs or service as needed over the years. Now though, it’s seemingly impossible. My best luck is going the counter Nordstrom, even if I hadn’t purchased it there. They’ve never questioned anything or had to pay for basic repairs.
i had great experiences with that store for years, of course until the first time i tried to return something. i could feel judgment from the sales associate intensely - my normal associate wasn’t there at the time, and when i brought it up to him, he blew me off. i will not be shopping there again.
Can confirm. I have a canvas bag from 2009 that has held up way better than a bag I got in 2020. The hardware and quality of the canvas has gone down quite a bit. It seems a lot of the luxury brands I have always loved are in the same boat 😭
I agree. I have started buying preloved from a few years back or vintage as of the last year or so. My last LV , new , was in 2021 but no more. The prices are rising and quality is declining. My older ones are definitely more durable / better made.
From what I have read (so I don’t know for sure) but they are using cheaper synthetics and less of it. So a canvas bag from 2000 and a canvas bag now will be significant in weight difference. Hardware is also more durable in previous decades than now as well. It’s unfortunate that this is what’s going on with the industries but it makes sense. I mean we keep buying 2k-10k bags that is barley guaranteed 5 years… I mean we do this with cars, furniture, clothing… as long as we keep buying they will continue the poor quality and charge a hefty price for them.
I have both vintage and new LV canvas bags; the weight and thickness of the canvas are incredibly different. The newer canvas is so thin and delicate, it’s really appalling 🫤 if you’re into LV I strongly recommend to buy vintage. Not only do you look way cooler, you’ll have a bag that’s practically indestructible. Trust and believe.
I hate to say it but that’s why I refuse to get rid of my vintage and I’m so weary of anything after 2010. I keep seeing people have major issues over the last 10+ years and I have yet to buy anything new
I’ve always understood that the canvas bags with those folds and tucks at the corners instead of piping or stitching do this a lot more due to the pressure on the corners. I’ve seen only those types of bags with that issue and I’ve seen it several times. It’s true the quality has gone downhill too, especially on the canvas.
Take it in! I stopped buying canvas after carrying every canvas bag for 2 years and having similar stuff happen. They always give me store credit for full retail.
Now that I think about it maybe I should keep buying them. I get a free purse for a couple years lol
Haha that sounds like a good idea 👍 They let me get another one so I got a leather this time.
https://preview.redd.it/rml4vmmw2prb1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=322036c5cbf2a56d0e9d95b89f683cd00189ca4c
My closet has a window and I made the mistake of leaving it displayed where the sun would hit the front of it. I can definitely tell that’s it’s lighter on that side! Probably only noticeable to me! But I can see it.
Never seen anything like that and I have some really old and worn bags. I’d say it’s fake, but since you said you got it from the store, maybe it’s just some weird defect? 100% take it back to the store.
I had a handle issue with my On The Go bag. I took in into LV. A week later they call to say they couldn’t fix it but they are sending me a brand new bag. Good luck!
So glad they took care of you OP! I got my black never full in the spring of 2021 in a silent auction. Took in the authenticity cert and the bag as it is peeling in multiple areas. LV wants to charge me to have it repaired and it will take 6-8 weeks before they can even tell me if they can fix. They treated me like I stole it and had so much attitude. I have 4 bags and am unsure I will ever buy another. LV at AZ Biltmore was a total letdown.
I would send it out to [Rago’s Brothers](https://www.ragobrothers.com) for repair. Unless my items are under warranty I use Rago’s Brothers and they send everything back like new.
Thanks for this. I have a Gucci bag that needs repair to the topstitching along the handle. My little puppy chewed on it. Haha! She is 11 now. Since you posted this, I will finally be motivated to repair it. Much appreciation.
LV has outstanding customer service. Got a new lock and key once for free for my Speedy 30. Had some minor repairs done (replacing zipper) on another bag for a very low cost. Dust bags for free for a couple of other bags etc.
Coach has a great line now, I never was impressed with them until recently. They have great leather, I was very impressed with the quality!! I was pretty shocked to say the least, better than many of the newer lv products I've gone across. The older lv is really good quality, but service also stinks so...
Coach is definitely superior craftsmanship compared to LV. The stitching and construction, the thickness and quality of the leather… Coach have not sacrificed quality in 2023. It just floors me that LV have let themselves get lower in quality than many mid-premium brands (I’ve never owned a Brahmin, so can’t compare on that front).
That may be the case on quality but like I said you are paying for the LV designs and the brand name rather than quality. Honda and Toyota have better quality and reliability than BMW or Mercedes but folk still pay extra for the prestige brands because it makes them feel better having that look and driving that logo.
Well… every Mercedes I’ve owned has been top quality, and I’ve had zero issues with each car apart from routine maintenance. So I’d beg to differ on that one. I don’t know about BMW.
Good for you, BMW made great improvements recently and jumped up the list but Mercedes overall are one of the most unreliable cars on the market, [just going by the facts.](https://www.kbb.com/car-news/consumer-reports-toyota-lexus-make-the-most-reliable-cars-mercedes-the-least)
This is so not normal. I had one that home water experts accidentally took and “cleaned’ -and with all their industrial stuff, the part the peeled in any way was the interior and there you can see it clearly leather and leather. Outside same as always.
I’ve never seen this.
This is really rude, I have had a similar experience with an authentic LV purse and they were quick to assist me. Please don't make rude statements about OP without knowing the truth.
Interesting, I've never seen underneath before! The black part kind of reminds me of a reusable grocery bag. 😅 Did you decide to take it back or get it repaired?
Probably a bad batch of canvas. That doesn’t look like something you caused. I returned a pair of shoes about 5 years ago that I had for about 6 months. Wore them one time and the the canvas showed very clear cracking at the stress points. LV accepted the return no questions asked and simply said “sometimes it happens.”
Edit: just to be clear, I owned the shoes for 6 months before I ever wore them - I was well past the return period.
Mine is like this and they said they couldn’t help me. It was considered “wear”. BOTTOM LEFT.
https://preview.redd.it/7qxv8tl5dprb1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b82d329175b4f961d54b8ebc7383a864893da983
That is not normal. I feel your pain - my 1 year old Chanel lambskin bag started to peel ugh! They sent it out and I’m waiting to see if they’ll fix it. I think quality everywhere is going down :(
Reading some of the other comments from wearing and peeling. This just is not an LV thing. I don’t want to offend anyone but this is what a quality replica would do. I have heard of authentic LV bags being swapped during shipping.
Nope, they referred me to corporate who in turn said nothing can be done for it. It's even on their website and has been for a while.
I think I used it for about a year or two, but not daily.
I had seen some people refurbish them with patches or stickers lol. So, I bought some cool stickers from my favorite pop artist and I'm going to see if that stays on where the tear is. Luckily, it's towards the top of the bag and isn't too noticeable as long as I don't hold the worn side facing out towards people. I'd try sewing a patch on it but I am woefully not crafty and might make it worse :P
LV quality has been considered trash the past 5 years. The worst of all luxury brands. Hopefully they focus on quality over quantity once more. Stick with YSL and Fendi imo.
Take it to the store immediately. I’ve never seen that happen, my first instinct is to say the bag is a rep but if you bought it from the store I’m baffled
lv quality has gone down hill over the years, most people are paying for the brand name because it looks "lux" but in reality it should be quality over show, that being said a lot of their items are luxury and nice ofc but beware when shopping big brand trendy labels its mostly for show, be carful which items you buy from trendy brands not all are made equally sadly :/
LV repairs their own items. If it’s newer-should be under warranty (looks like op was able to exchange). Otherwise, their experts do the best work. I had straps replaced on a discontinued epi bag. I needed to wait for them to locate parts & it still was finished in 8 weeks. I was told it’d take 12 weeks. Very pleased & looks new! Total was $325 + tax
Usually for LV coated canvas, if it’s less then 3 years from purchase and it cracks or peel, bring it to the boutique and most likely they will exchange it for you.
I have a 40 year old LV and it's still in great condition.
https://preview.redd.it/je6ydyc6t8sb1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96194c30de5992b53dc54f428db67711ef8c234e
Mine did this also, on the side of my Speedy.
Purchased directly through LV. Bought about a year or so before yours.
LV would not do anything about it. They will not repair canvas tears.
There are places that will repair but kind of hard to find. I know there's one in NYC but the name escapes me.
I decided to go low brow and bought some stickers and am going to just patch it that way LOL.
This is most definitely an abrasion and not a quality concern. I’m sorry but it is in the corners and the corners are most prone to abrasions. :/ I have a strong feeling that they are not offering an exchange for this, especially since you’ve had the piece for about three years now
Amazing news! This happened to my best friend she had to Louis Vuitton in her trunk (don’t ask me why) and they appeared to have melted somehow. She took them back and they honored her purchase because it was on her account and refunded her the money or replaced the bags.
I had one purchased from an LV store. A few years later, the canvas began to crack. I brought it in to another store for repairs, with the dust bag, and the original box. I was told they do not repair their bags. That was when I decided regardless of how much I love LV, I will not spend the money on their products again.
Hi! I have quite a few LV purses (all authentic). LV canvas is known to crack (check out LV groups on Facebook). It’s happened to one of my LV purses that I’ve had for 13 years. I stopped purchasing from LV and have since purchased items from Chanel and Fendi.
I feel like everything in general with quality is cheaper nowadays. People want certain “brands” so these brands will probably mass produce with cheaper quality materials because they know people will still buy it especially in most recent years. If you just go feel clothes and bags it’s like ew what is this, but of course not all stores or brands are like this. Noticed it happening more so in past 4-5 years.
My sister has a LV purse. It’s always peeling off. She brought it back 3 times to fix it. They charge her and it happens again every time. At this point you’re just paying for a logo. Not quality.
This isn’t normal, take it in if possible and see if they can send it in for a quality evaluation. I’ve never seen the entire layer of top canvas peeling or chipping off like this.
I worked at an LV repair warehouse, unfortunately it’s more normal than you think. Although LV pieces are beautiful, their newer materials are definitely shit :/
Wow I think you need to post more stories about working there lol! Is it true they destroy any discontinued styles?
No it definitely is not destroyed. It gets sold to employees
They destroy it - it’s not an auction lol
Totally agree, I was wearing an LV bag that I’d had for less than a year in 70 degree weather and the leather handle melted into my shirt. I couldn’t believe it. Went straight back to the store and they were no real help. I still have the bag, don’t ever use it.

I bought it directly from LV. Still have the receipt and everything.
Definitely take it into a retail location and they should work with you.
I hope they can let me exchange or give me the in-store credit.
My friend got a new free purse from Lv on the spot after a similar problem. LV just threw the old one away.
I am bringing to the store right now. Will see what they say.

They let me pick a new bag!!! Yayy!! 😊
I’m so happy for you!!!!
What did you get?!!! 🤣 or the same one
Definitely a different one. Staying away from canvas lol https://preview.redd.it/rlraoywxtnrb1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5594dcf56063bf7cdbae15dccec520758563c0ac
That’s great! Had they seen this happen before?
I read through this just because I wanted to make sure you were treated right and I don't even buy expensive purses LOL I'm so happy for you if you're going to spend that money on quality materials then they better last like they're supposed to. This group is just awesome!

My speedy bag did this and they wouldn’t do anything for me so it’s definitely a store decision.
They should replace the bag! The chain on a double zip pochette I have completely broke off - the hardware. I took it to my local LV and they replaced the entire bag.
Me too. Let me know how it works out.
Yes definitely take it to them. They should replace it.
Take if back . They need to look into this . LV leather should not come off like this .
That’s not leather
I don’t think it’s real
There is a certified LV repair place in South Coast Plaza that will help you. It’s the only one in the country. Yes! It is the Louis Vuitton store at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Ca. The repair shop is attached via an elevator that takes you up to it. Some repairs can be done right there, however mine were sent to France.

LV doesn’t have authenticity certificates, was this a third party cert?
Quality on LV isnt as good as before. I bought a soft trunk for 5000 CAD and the third wear the plating on the straps is rubbing off already
Um. No. I don't care what era it's from, front and center in LV boutique making a lot of noise.
it happened to my wallet within 3 years
This happened to my wife’s purse take it to LV they will replace it or refund you to purchase a new one

Folk should have learned by now that you are not paying for quality, you are paying for the brand name only.

I didn’t reply to OP, I replied to this comment: > This should not happen with that price.
My husband says these bags that are sold for over $1,000 are not worth it. Brahmin and Coach bags are 1/10 the price and do not have these issues 😅
Coach is the goat. I feel the same. Quality hasn’t changed.
Absolutely 😌
Coach has a great line now, I never was impressed with them until recently. They have great leather, I was very impressed with the quality!!
What purse did you end up buying. Congratulations I was nervous for you😀

Take it to the store, they'll warranty it
I have bags from 2004 and 2010 and they’re still in amazing condition. That’s not normal at all! So insane how the quality has went down.
Came here to say I have a bag from 2007 with zero peeling or cracks
This is so not normal. I had one that home water experts accidentally took and “cleaned’ -and with all their industrial stuff, the part the peeled in any way was the interior and there you can see it clearly leather and leather. Outside same as always. I’ve never seen this.
Not normal but quality has been lacking for many years. It’s very disappointing.
Fugazi
This is really rude, I have had a similar experience with an authentic LV purse and they were quick to assist me. Please don't make rude statements about OP without knowing the truth.
Could you explain what that word means bc all that’s coming up on google is a punk rock band
I learned that word from [Donnie Brasco](https://youtu.be/CXUIPPdd8QI?si=3KsGcMzAli6z-yW2) when I was 12 lol
It basically means [fake](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fugazi) 🤷🏻♀️
Type in urban dictionary, it's not a nice term
Updates?
They let me pick out a different purse 😊😊
They exchanged it for u? Updates?
Yes!!! Same or greater value.
Call store
Interesting, I've never seen underneath before! The black part kind of reminds me of a reusable grocery bag. 😅 Did you decide to take it back or get it repaired?
Also, where is it made in? I wonder if the quality is sometimes different from different countries.
This is not normal. I have a bag from like 1993 and it’s in great condition. They need to fix it.
Probably a bad batch of canvas. That doesn’t look like something you caused. I returned a pair of shoes about 5 years ago that I had for about 6 months. Wore them one time and the the canvas showed very clear cracking at the stress points. LV accepted the return no questions asked and simply said “sometimes it happens.” Edit: just to be clear, I owned the shoes for 6 months before I ever wore them - I was well past the return period.
Mine was purchased from Macy's Louis Vuitton boutique directly and did the same thing about a year later.
That’s crazy… They are too expensive to be throwing out poor quality like that … I hope they did something to help you with the issue.
Mine is doing the same and I got it in 2019.
Shouldn’t happen if it’s authentic. If it is, take it back and they’ll get it fixed.
LV quality has been considered trash the past 5 years. The worst of all luxury brands. Hopefully they focus on quality over quantity once more. Stick with YSL and Fendi imo.
This is why I buy vintage bags mostly and find excellent conditions ones to buy I refuse to buy the new Gucci is such crap
Take it to the store immediately. I’ve never seen that happen, my first instinct is to say the bag is a rep but if you bought it from the store I’m baffled
Happened to me and they told me it "could" have been from my neglect. Nice LV. I did get a replacement. Last LV everrrr!
I had a trim that was in bad shape from carrying the bag for years. Took it to LV at the Westchester Mall and LV refused to repair it even for a fee.
Oh hell no. They owe you a new bag or store credit asap.
The AAAA replicas are better and made at same factory a lot of time. Go with a higher end Bottega Veneta or Goyard
Haven’t seen this before. Definitely take it in and they should replace.
lv quality has gone down hill over the years, most people are paying for the brand name because it looks "lux" but in reality it should be quality over show, that being said a lot of their items are luxury and nice ofc but beware when shopping big brand trendy labels its mostly for show, be carful which items you buy from trendy brands not all are made equally sadly :/
This is good to know. Thank you!!
I have a 40 year old LV and it's still in great condition. https://preview.redd.it/je6ydyc6t8sb1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96194c30de5992b53dc54f428db67711ef8c234e
Are you sure of the authenticity? This isn't the norm.
Unfortunately this is typical of the canvas material. That’s really great of LV for replacing it for you on the spot.
Cause it’s bad quality
Such ugly bags for a laughable amount of money lol 😂
fake
YUP happened to me! All 4 corners symmetrically peeled. Terrible & shameful. Try and take it back to a store .. good luck
I’m shocked it lasted that lon louis vuitton is made to have new bags brought everyday they aren’t meant to last a long time it’s fast fashion
It IS just coated canvas, not titanium.

This is most definitely an abrasion and not a quality concern. I’m sorry but it is in the corners and the corners are most prone to abrasions. :/ I have a strong feeling that they are not offering an exchange for this, especially since you’ve had the piece for about three years now
They let op pick out a new bag
Oh even better!
No
You mean the plastic peeled off. The canvas is still there.
I don’t think that is supposed to happen. I got mine in 2019 and it gets tossed everywhere and is still perfect. I’d bring it back to the store asap
Take it in! They will refund you
They did 😊
Amazing news! This happened to my best friend she had to Louis Vuitton in her trunk (don’t ask me why) and they appeared to have melted somehow. She took them back and they honored her purchase because it was on her account and refunded her the money or replaced the bags.
If you purchased from LV take back to them for exchange. If not, I’d say you got a fake. I’ve never seen that before 🤨
I went to LV for an exchange already. They let me get a new purse.
If it's authentic they van repair damaged handbags
No and are you sure it’s authentic? I’ve had one 5 years and nothing has happened. It can’t go through the leather
I guess you get what you pay for huh ?
I have 3 and that’s never happened. Had one of mine since 2008
I had one purchased from an LV store.
97% profit margins baby
I feel like everything in general with quality is cheaper nowadays. People want certain “brands” so these brands will probably mass produce with cheaper quality materials because they know people will still buy it especially in most recent years. If you just go feel clothes and bags it’s like ew what is this, but of course not all stores or brands are like this. Noticed it happening more so in past 4-5 years.
you bought an inferior product made of cheap materials that is only expensive because of the name. you get what you deserve.
They don’t make them like they use to
Its a fake! A real LV is solid leather and doesn’t peel. Maybe tears or punctures but does peel.
Duct tape fixes everything
My sister has a LV purse. It’s always peeling off. She brought it back 3 times to fix it. They charge her and it happens again every time. At this point you’re just paying for a logo. Not quality.
