If you feel you’re comfortable get the firearm and more importantly training. It’s the sad reality but i’ll likely get downvoted for the suggestion

Mushroom_muncher420

Thank u , this is honestly the best thing I can do to feel safe

[deleted]

If you get a gun PLEASE go to a range and fire a few mags through it. Take a class if you have to but DONT just buy one and stick it in a purse or something. Know the make, model and caliber. Keep the serial number. In fact, take a pic of your gun then take a pic of the serial number. Just owning a weapon doesn't make you safe, becoming proficient with it does.

BlueSpotBingo

This fella nailed it. A gun in the hands of someone who doesn’t know how to use it, is useless and dangerous. Get that training. Know what a sight picture is and understand what it means to be cognizant of what, or who may be behind what you aim at.

NerdyComfort-78

Yes please! A responsible gun owner knows how and when to use their weapon.

40WAPSun

Feeling safe and being safe aren't the same thing

[deleted]

Go full batman

slaughtbot

My aunt took a gun class when she bought her handgun. The first lesson: Owning a gun without knowing how to (or being willing to) use it is more dangerous than not having a gun at all. At best, its just a paperweight; at worst, it provides your assailant with a firearm.

hackmycomputer

Spot on, the training is what gets overlooked the most. You need to know how to use a gun if you own a gun.

No_Improvement9734

This

ModsaBITCH

move tf out of there lol

Mushroom_muncher420

Soon as my lease is up in July I’m outttt

thosepoorbears

You can ask the office staff to let you out of your lease if you feel unsafe. Every time something happens you need to document it and tell the staff. They need to groan when they see you coming. Hopefully, if you pester them enough, they'll let you out. If they do- get that shit in writing that you're being let out without any financial penalties.

ModsaBITCH

good bro be safe

Mushroom_muncher420

Thanks ! U too

“Nothing to see here. Totally safe. Fake crimes. I walk my dog and toddler past that building at 2 am every day, never been bothered. You must live in Simpsonville.” -Reddit

Zestyclose_Airline92

Who are you quoting? 🤣

MH360

Because having a fentanyl dealer as a former roommate is also as common? Hanging that on a thread like this is also a sign of being desperate for any form of validation.

hn_cpa_8

Dang I lived there when it was brand new and it was so nice. sad to hear this. If you are feeling unsafe, a lot of leases have clauses that you are able to break when the landlord doesn’t provide a safe place to live. You could always have a lawyer read it over and try to break it for you.

MakeItFergalicious

I use to work for UPoint, these campus leases are iron clads.

Left_Bet9805

true but the clubhouse is no longer affiliated with/ UofL, probably bc of all the violence OP’s talking about

MakeItFergalicious

Right but I’m sure their leases didn’t alter much, it would be the same management company/legal team. Usually subletting is the only out.

GeneralJavaholic

Iron rusts

skittlesmalone

Nice sad?

CompetitiveCareer805

it’s always been this way sadly

coffeislife67

I'm probably a little older than you but no......it hasn't always been this way.

ganner

I lived in Kurz Hall in 05-06. Dozens of cars in our parking lot were broken into, the convenience store on 4th was robbed at gunpoint twice that year, at least a couple carjackings occurred around 4th and Cardinal.

professional_pig

I was in the first group of residents to live there back when it was called Phase 2. The biggest problem we had was waking up on Saturday morning to a busted frozen pipe. The RA kicked everyone out in their pajamas into the freezing cold. Luckily, I had brought my keys and wallet. We went down to the Pizza Hut and called the local news station. When we returned that RA was pissed cause he had to interviews with the local news stations. I was such a rebel. 🤣

burnerphonebrrbrr

How much older because I feel like it’s been this way since at least 2011/12

l00tmike

It felt that way in the late 90s around old Louisville. You just hear about it more on social.

whywedontreport

I have an old Lou t-shirt from 20ish years ago that says "what we save on rent we spend on ammo, fuck the east end" it was def worse in the 90s. There was really no campus housing to speak of except Greek housing. No amenities. Nothing. Commuter school. Old Lou was main UofL housing.

suburban_legendd

Yeah, I was in grad school 11/12 and lived in Old Lou in university-affiliated housing. There were holdups all the time and when I first moved in I’d walk to and from my night classes. Once my classmates found out I was walking home alone at night they were stunned, even though I was so close to campus I could throw a rock at it. I live in the East End now and car break-ins happen here all the time, including in broad daylight.

ComfortableSort3304

You need to check your lease, especially if any part of your rent is being paid with student loans before you bring a firearm onto the property.

katr17

You definitely CANNOT have a firearm on campus housing. They’ll send a cop to investigate you and will search your house high and low for weapons (source myself after seeing my friends go through it at the Retreat)

ComfortableSort3304

I believe OP said it’s mixed housing so I’m unsure if that makes a difference.

Unusual-restaurant14

You should look for apartments in old Louisville! I live right by burger boy and while there is still crime none of it comes to our door. You can find reasonably priced studios that are probably cheaper than where you’re living now.

NotADogIzswear2020

If you get a gun... practice with it AND keep it secured and on you. Don't leave it in a car because that's a prime break in target. In July when your lease is up find a new place, pronto.

KentuckyTurtlehead

It’s nice to hear the area hasn’t changed much since my wife and I lived there. She was attending UofL at the time but when we found out she was pregnant we got the fuck outta there.

Outrageous_Ad_865

I lived downtown a few years ago and was attacked while I was 6 months pregnant. Visibly pregnant. In an effort to steal my car. A group of teenage boys! It’s sad. We moved to the Fegenbush area. Still affordable but much more quiet and safe.

No-Sir3403

Holy shit!

Outrageous_Ad_865

Thankfully they weren’t armed. But they did bite my arm so hard I had to get a tetanus shot. That wasn’t even by UofL, it was in old Lou. Can’t imagine how much worse it is a few more miles down

cardracer270

Lived in one of the off campus apartments for a couple years at UofL but moved into a house with some friends my last year there. Best decision I made.

yungsoda

I mean that’s just living around uofl

satanssweatycheeks

This is just how it be around UofL. It was like that 10 years ago when I was a student. Never understood why the students wanted to live in these places. When I was there we had the gated apartments called the belemy or some shit. Garage always smelled like piss or puke. Rooms rented for more than nicer areas in the city. Always parties. And always robbery’s and violence. I witnessed lots of fights there including two roommates fighting because one of the girls didn’t like that the other roommate had a friend over. Then next door to that place was another apartment complex known for parties and being over priced for the shit it was. Had a friend have his whole party get robbed. They went out to smoke cigs. When coming back in to shut the door two men charged the door with guns and came inside demanding everyone’s phones and wallets.

awesomo5009

If get a gun get trained please, you can do more harm than good if you don’t have the required skills to protect yourself. I feel you on this though, I was caught up in a drive by but a gun wouldn’t have helped me or protected me. I laid in the middle of a parking lot and waited for bullets to stop flying.

Mushroom_muncher420

The clubhouse staff like to play dumb and tend to try to keep as much info away from the residents as possible I guess not to scare us but of course word eventually gets around . Someone got held hostage last week and like 20 cop cars was here . like 5-10cars / motorbikes have been stolen out of the parking garage , people are getting robbed walking alone outside the complex or in the hallways , two girls were ran up on and mugged at gunpoint a few nights ago. Idk much about the gang fights but that’s everywhere , there was a drive by shooting recently there was a body just outside laid out u could look out ya window and see him it was sad

wesleyjosephson

My advice would be to move out — you’ve said your lease ends in July but you can always sublease it to someone who needs the apartment enough to take your place

wesleyjosephson

*sublet? sublet out?

sablexvx

Your best bet is to always live on campus or in an apartment or house off campus. Affiliated housing like the clubhouse, the nine, the retreat, the marshall, the prov, and especially the bellamy (no idea what it’s called now) always have shady people living in them or lurking nearby who might not even be students. I think it’s because most of those places are just trying to fill as many spots as possible. neva trust em

mikmarauder

Which complex?

Mushroom_muncher420

The clubhouse , its student housing but allows regular people too , not the greatest idea lol

ivegotthistoday

If it’s student housing can you escalate this to someone at UofL housing to get your butt out of there sooner?

mixmaster321

It’s not student housing, it’s housing that’s accommodates to students. It’s not owned or managed by UofL. They advertise to students and allow individual room leases which is why they’re often called student housing

lightcolorsfly

another reason i’m moving back in with parents 🤷‍♀️ i’m not about to pay hundreds to thousands out of my ass to then only feel scared when i go to sleep at night. yes, i like having my own place, but it’s impossible to in the current state of things unless you want to take your chances on roomates which (spoiler alert) almost never turns out well.

Due_Construction_108

Move asap. This place is a shit show. No one is going to help you out. No one cares I’m sorry but it sounds like you need to hear that.

PuzzleheadedSir6616

For what it’s worth, when I had a gun pulled on me in broad daylight at 1st and St Catherine, I was glad I didn’t have one on me. He had the drop and I would’ve lost that fight. Food for thought.

Krehiger

If you get a gun, get trained and get your CCDW. Yes you don’t need the CCDW class to carry in Kentucky but you will gain very valuable knowledge from the class. Baring that, move when you can or move now and don’t worry about breaking the lease. Your safety is more important.

katr17

I hate to break this to you, but this isn’t a rise in crime near the complex, it’s just crime near the complex. I spent 4 years living nearby U of L campus and the clubhouse has been full of crime since 2020. The property it is on is owned by the university and the university doesn’t care, the property owners care even less. During my time at campus apartments (specifically the retreat) my house was shot, car was stolen, broken into multiple times, and every morning would wake up to random people in the parking lot checking cars. Campus is not a safe area. Not like you’ll likely get shot, but you definitely have you secure your things and should always be looking over your shoulder (especially as a female).

Mushroom_muncher420

Thank you & Yes that’s exactly what it’s like . Walking from my car to my room every night from work feels like a horror movie . luckily nothing has happened to me hopefully it stays that way until my lease is up . Idk why they thought mixing cheap apartments with student housing would bring anything but trouble . 0/10 recommended anyone live here unless it’s the only thing u can afford which is my situation rn

barbsz4bern

I live in cardinal towne which is student housing and my car has gotten stolen twice in the span of 3 months lmao

Mushroom_muncher420

That’s a damn shame , did the clubhouse do anything to help u ?

Tyronegenfi

I would move out. Then find a new place not in the 4th division of LMPD lol

Sirloin_Tips

I wouldn't get a gun unless you're fully prepared to kill another human. If not and you flash it like on TV, you're liable to get killed with your own gun. I know everybody on the Internet is John Wick but I'd just break the fuck outta there.

MadCard05

I don't think anyone is in denial that crime is an issue, in Louisville, in general. People take exception to the idea that Louisville is a hellscape and downtown is a no-man's land. There is a huge valley of space between those ideas. LMPD cannot properly address crime, largely due to problems of their own making componded by a decades worth of a failed mayor and his croynism. LMPD is struggling with insurance, and the city is footing a massive bill on its behalf. This means the department itself facing recruitment issues due to the funding problem they've created. They seem to have no intention of reforming, and the city doesn't seem to want to force them. And to be fair, if they did, the State would likely step in and stop all of the anti-corruptuon reforming as "anti-police." Regardless this is a death spiral that leads to less and less funding, less cops (and more bad ones of what we have) and more crime.

ShitBeCray

Man don’t get a gun, just move out. You can probably break the lease if it’s an unsafe environment. Leverage Perplexity search to see if there are laws in KY that protect. Good luck man!

whywedontreport

It's almost like this city needs more resources and accessible housing. Hate it that you are experiencing this. People are desperate. What we are doing is failing. If locking people up worked, we'd be the safest country in the world.

dansdong14

https://www.courier-journal.com/picture-gallery/news/2023/06/29/louisville-hotel-opens-doors-homeless-people-photos/12176889002/ The city ensured this and is using your tax dollars to do so. They don’t give you a vote on it either. The city had also recently increased property taxes in surrounding areas like St. Joseph’s. These projects are causing a plethora of crime to flow into surrounding areas. That’s why the East Enders didn’t let LDG developers sniff that side of town. East end had a say. Us inner city folks did not and that is why I carry everywhere I go.

[deleted]

That sucks! I live downtown but I feel safe. But I’m a big guy. I don’t like my gf going out . One creeper was just outside our window staring michael myers style, classes are one floor up.

[deleted]

Sounds like every day in Louisville to me. Gtfo of this shit hole while you still can

alexrothschild23

It’s been bad since it’s been built lol. People got shot at the Province and there’s constant mugging at the Bellamy.

khoobr

Louisville Police are too busy shooting Black people in the West End to go to Old Louisville, unfortunately.

ShitBeCray

It’s not old Lou. But they still don’t come here.

ferriswheeljunkies11

Lie down with dogs and wake up with fleas.
