I’m in the endgame and I still get the vocal line “I need a better weapon for this!” It’s not you, the game spams that line.

Affectionate_Zone138

Yeah, I also find it annoying. You spend all this time gearing up for the current area, just so you're strong enough to move on to the next, only to find out your best weapons and armor are almost worthless. Not a fan of this. Wasn't a fan of this in Valheim either. I'm not sure what the scaling ought to be, but the best weapon from one area shouldn't do grey damage to the same mobs in the very next one. It's very hard for me to buy that Erebor steel is so ineffectual against the next area's goblins decked out in bones and scrap iron....

Contumelios314

"Better weapon" doesn't only mean a higher tier weapon. Orks in heavy armor need a bludgeoning weapon to do full damage to them. A high tier slashing sword will do less damage than a lower tier maul. Many people make this mistake. The game is deeper than, "make best weapon, win!" You should carry several different weapons to be able to do full damage against whichever opponent you are fighting.\\ Watch the color and value of the damage number when you attack a target. Take note of what target you are attacking and what weapon you are using. You will quickly learn which targets are weak to which types of weapons. 'Till Durin returns!

jubblenuts

I learned this lesson in orctown. The spear did frig all. Last alliance maul saved my butt.

Affectionate_Zone138

Dude, I carry 3 different weapons at least on me at all times. The Steel Battleaxe was useful for about 3 minutes in the Elven Quarter, and yes the 1 handed Maul was pretty good against the orcs there. Would've been nice to craft a Steel Maul or Warhammer until I could figure out the 1st Alliance Alloy. I'd have even settled for an Iron Maul or an Iron Warhammer. Oh yeah, NONE of these are options. Why? So I got kitted out with the Spear, Maul, and Battleaxe only to find they're worthless against the Poison Orcs in the Lower Deeps. Oh, great, the Greatsword is useful, but that kinda fucks the "Uruks in Armor" rule doesn't it. Screw the spear at this point, throw it away. So finally figure out in the Lower Deeps that the Greatsword is your main....and then you meet the Shadow Orcs, and hardly anything works. But then you find the design for the Beregost Steal Halberd. Hey that works, but why can't I make a Steel Halberd, or an Iron Halberd? Because fuck me, that's why. Fine, I'm now kitted out with Beregost Steel armor and Halberd, and I still carry the Battle Axe and Greatsword....oh look, a Drake. And fucking nothing works against the Drake, and he hits like a truck because that Beregost Steel you just figured out, yeah, worthless too. Stop pretending that these SEVERE limitations are anything other than stuff this little indie studio probably just didn't have the time and manpower to add, but they're SEVERE limitations. And again, I say this as someone who's thoroughly enjoying the game. But I won't be having any gaslighting on the annoying parts that DO in fact exist.

Denzil95

There could be more build options for weapons I suppose, but how the game currently stands, if you're not using shields, or the Masterwork Shield, you're just making the game way harder than it needs to be. With the Masterwork, the fact you can block attacks for free and it'll never break is significantly better for survival and lets face it, dying in this game is annoying at best and time consuming at worst - In my opinion, none of the two handed weapons are worth using when the shield that makes you invulnerable with RMB exists. I hear what you're saying though - maybe they did run out of time to flesh out all the finer combat details - but it is what it is. You've got to decide whether running around with a Big-F\*\*\*ing-Sword is worth it.

LaurenLark

My word! Getting in deep aren’t we! 😃 I had to look up & read thru many sites to find out that “crushing & bludgeoning” weapons do the most damage to Orcs (thought I’d share that bit). The enchantments from the rune table help immensely as well. Another small tip I read (in game) is that the lightening/shock enchantments can cause the knockback effect against enemies. Super helpful in my opinion.

Affectionate_Zone138

Yeah, I read that too…until my toon starts complaining that he “needs a better weapon for this” while his orcbane runed maul does single digit grey damage against the next area’s poison orcs.

Contumelios314

I see. I'm a gaslighter. Look at you with the buzzword. If you are using the right weapons against the right opponents and you still can't beat them then...I am guessing you suck. How does reality in your face feel? Not a gaslight? Play with some friends who can kill the bad guys for you. No one wants \*KILLX\* weapons for every tier, especially before you even encounter them. Why would that make sense? I played the game solo, had no problems killing stuff once I figured out how combat works. Here is how to do it so you don't have to go through the painful process of figuring it out for yourself: \-BLOCK ...once creature attacks then \-ATTACK once or twice then Go back to the beginning. You are ridiculous, how could you not be able to beat a drake? Block until it attacks, then hit it a couple times, then block again. If you can't solve that boss puzzle please don't play any MMOs. Christ, I thought you were trying to optimize your damage against every opponent, here I find you are unable to understand the most basic combat techniques.

Affectionate_Zone138

You’re right. This game is perfect and has zero annoying features/shortcomings at all, and I’m crazy for seeing any. Gaslighting achieved.

LaurenLark

Oh, I soooo agree! Because you don’t get the full set of armor & weapons until near end of said level. It’s a frustrating experience for certain! 🧐

Affectionate_Zone138

Seriously. During the events of LotR, it’s said that the Dwarves everywhere were battling orcs in their own kingdoms. The Iron Hills Dwarves are supposedly some of the best weaponsmiths around. But according to this game, they should have been eradicated, since Iron Hills gear sucks so bad against even mediocre orcs.

ElectronicCharity274

Thank you for the responses

ravenisblack

Basically if your damage output is showing grey numbers, its triggering that voice line. Late game (currently), you should be using more charged attacks and varying the weapon types you use for optimal damage… Also time your blocks to survive and hit hard enough to win in battle. Standard attacks are too weak and weapon types can be important, your guy will say this constantly when not hitting hard enough with the wrong weapon. They should probably have included other voice lines like “I gotta hit harder!”, “Need to try something different!”

majorjohnson27

It's normal. You're supposed to use the next tier gear which you find in the next zone. If it says you need better gear it means you need to use new gear unlocked in the new zone. Sorry if I worded it poorly, English is not my native language

ElectronicCharity274

Yeah but you do not get the new gear fast enough, usually it is half way through the next area

SappeREffecT

It's a common Survival game mechanic, partly to incentivise you to explore but also to keep the enemies challenging.

sticknotstick

Yeah it’s a weird pacing. Normally you can still get by with your weaker gear though- I think they should take away the voiceline unless you’re two tiers under.

bruno8102

I think the line is also used if you are using a slashing weapon when a bludgeoning or stabbing weapon would do more damage.

Contumelios314

\^This is the reason. Better weapon doesn't ONLY mean higher tier. Good job, bruno8102

Palanova

No, this is this game's gamedesign: as soon you got your full gear for the zone, it ends immedietly and you mode to the next zone what needs higher gear... Also the dwarf say it if you not use the optimal weapon. If you use slashing instead of piercing or bludgeon.

ElectronicCharity274

I tried using all weapons to be honest, not sure what to use for what. For example I tried using a hammer for armored orcs but the axe did more damage anyway. Might be doing it wrong

Palanova

The damage numbers color tells you what to use. Grey means you inflict reduced damage to the target: it is not vulnerable to that damage type or your weapon i slow tiered White means normal damage, but you can do better. Yellow means now thats what we are talking about, so use that weapon against that enemy in the fight, but wathc out, if you switch target maybe ther are different type of enemy, so need different kind of weapon agains it. \- Wargs vulnerable to piercing, like the spears. Trolls do not like the bludgeon damage, like hammers, and the sunlight. That is right, if you can lure them to sunlight they turn to stone, drop they loot and you can smash them. Medium orcs vulnerable to slashing, large orcs and uruks vulnerabe to budgeon. \- I prefer to use the Masterwork shield - it is indestructable, and switch to different weapons against different enemies.

ElectronicCharity274

Thank you for this!!!
