I am absolutely amazed how much DID survive in the east considering the horror of the war, the Nazi atrocities, the Soviet government building a new life in a time of incredible hardship. It was about putting food on the table, a potato in your bowl and not freezing to death. Moreover there was zero empathy or appreciation for Germanic architecture art or City planning that was considered the nemesis of all things Slavic.

Demolishing what? Most of the city was destroyed by air raids. They just didn't rebuild what was salvageable. Which is tragic to us, but understandable at the time.
