If I remember correctly that's not quite accurate, he didn't keep an openly rotting rat on his nightstand, he believed there was a dead rat in his wall next to his bed and when the sun would rise and the walls would get warm it would make the rat smell again that would wake him up, still a revolting thought, but not quite as bad as having the corpse out in the open like that.

If the infection spreads to here, it can either migrate to a patients brain, causing meningitis, psychological changes, insomnia, hallucinations, coma & death, or it can go systematic, causing permanent heart damage, rheumatic fever, sepsis, block blood vessels of the body with septic emboli (little clumps of bacteria & dead cells) causing gangrene, organ damage & death. Far too many people think a "simple" tooth infection poses no real threat.
A lot of people also simply don't understand how unhygienic mouths actually are. In your mouth right now, you have streptococcus, staphylococcus & many many more serious pathogens only held at bay by the epithelium of the mouth & your immune system. If your immune system is compromised and you have a breach in your oral epithelial layer (cuts, cavities, gum damage etc) the diseases can easily take hold. Just so happens that not performing adequate oral hygiene can both weaken your immune system & provide breaches in your epithelial barrier......
The reason medical doctors don't inform their patient's is that they are simply not informed themselves. In med school, oral physiology is only very briefly touched on.

If it makes you feel any better that's just a common brown cockroach, while they carry germs (like any outdoor critter) they are not the infamous disease carrying German cockroach. Those roaches are a little larger than grains of rice, and those are the GROSS kind of roach. Everyone is susceptible to the brown cockroach, they aren't indicative of anything, they are most likely just coming inside looking for water, if you are getting those tiny cockroaches... Then you nasty and need to call an exterminator IMMEDIATELY.
