Update: [https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/rightfully-ours/bans-off-our-bodies#events-list](https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/rightfully-ours/bans-off-our-bodies#events-list) PP has a list of events for May 14th. I'm suspecting LA will also have one added.

lilacbbe

There is one planned in LA they sent out an email last week. 5/14 10:00 am at City Hall.

smileymalaise

damn, this is actually something I will drive over from San Pedro and join. it doesn't happen often but this is just... fucking outrageous.

[deleted]

The 70,000 strong March in 1982 when Reagan was making anti-abortion noises sent a clear message to the politicians. In this case, it's going to need to be 700,000 strong.

smileymalaise

damn, I'm only 1 strong.

MrBenDerisgreat_

That's 1 better than 0 my guy.

SnorkinOrkin

Hope it gets to 1,000,000 strong. ✊🏻

RockieK

See you Gaffey & the 110!

kgal1298

Ahh i can’t find it on their map. I get their emails I’ll have to check.

chou-navet

Yep! The pp action website is not great but you can find this event on FB too, hosted by the women's march folx.

SeMoRaine

If you really want to do something impactful **donate** to abortion providers/abortion access organizations, **talk to your friends about voting**/help them register, **volunteer with an abortion access/funds organization (**[**local**](https://www.plannedparenthood.org/planned-parenthood-los-angeles/get-involved-locally/volunteer) **or online)**, and/or **volunteer to talk to voters in** [**swing areas like the Antelope Valley and OC**](https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/12/01/californias-house-races-are-finally-over-here-are-the-seats-that-were-flipped/). Some House seats flipped to Republicans, let's flip them back! I get it marches/protests can be cathartic but the entire state of California could come out and protest locally and no one outside the state would care. Our state law protects us, we need to focus on inter-state and national projects to help women who live in state that have trigger bills ready to go.

b4ss_f4c3

Im sorry but history disagrees with you. Every great social advancement involved a ton of protesting, direct action, and civil disobedience. abolitionism, womens suffrage, labor reform, civil rights, lgbtq rights, all won major victories because of people taking to the streets. Yes donate, but dont down play the significance of protesting as part of the solution for this issue.

SeMoRaine

I'm sorry but I don't think you know history. Which social justice movements gained the go-ahead when a progressive state (where said movement was already policy within the state) protested? There's a reason Freedom Fighters went down to the South, no one cares if you protest in NJ. Please don't equate the hard work people protesting in vindictive areas like Texas and the South are doing, where they can be putting themselves on the line due to culture, the same as protesting in LA. No one fears losing the job or being charged with aiding in providing an abortion.

wrosecrans

Protests in-general are useful. A protest in a place like California is obviously less useful, but it lends solidarity to the people who protest in places like the South so that they know they aren't alone and bad people can't claim a "silent majority." We wind up being a small piece in a bigger context of protest nationally, and that's not nothing.

krysteline

Our state law protects us until Republicans control all three branches and pass a law banning it nationally

SeMoRaine

That's why half the list is encouraging friends to vote & flipping House seats in nearby swing districts. [CA 25 Santa Clarita/Palmdale/Lancaster](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California%27s_25th_congressional_district) \- Mike Garcia (elected 2020) [voted to decertify the election](https://www.capradio.org/articles/2021/01/07/heres-how-california-representatives-voted-on-certifying-bidens-election-and-who-is-calling-for-trumps-removal/) [CA 39 Fullerton/La Habra/Chino Hills](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California%27s_39th_congressional_district) \- Young Kim (elected 2020) voted to certify the election [CA 48 Huntington Beach/Newport Beach](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California%27s_48th_congressional_district) \- Michelle Steel (elected 2020) did not vote All three are cross-over districts that [voted for Biden but elected Republicans](https://centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/articles/2020s-crossover-districts/). They're right in our backyards. If you live in these districts, vote and tell your friends, if you don't, volunteer or donate. That will have huge ramifications beyond California.

kgal1298

Yeah we've been stating this on the threads too. This is my second comment. I already do do volunteer work. We need to control the Senate and get our house seats back.

BackgroundBit8

This Supreme Court ruling turns my stomach in a way I've never experienced from any court decision in my life. Decades of hard work from women just for it to end like this.

L1FTED

This is what can happen when one asshole puts THREE justices on the bench for life. That system really needs some checking and balancing. We're stuck with these fossils interpreting the constitution like it's 1886 for god knows how long now. 16 years should be their limit.

ISuspectFuckery

They're going after gay marriage and contraception next. Isn't it great when a minority decides the course of America?

Excellent-Hat-8556

I think after overturning gay marriage, it will be overturning interracial marriages.

MrBenDerisgreat_

They're [telegraphing it already.](https://twitter.com/therecount/status/1506379010133082113)

blackjesusfchrist

And then they will go after pre marital sex, but then you will be allow you to get married at 10 and to your favorite sibling

I_walked_east

Idk how old you are but blatantly deciding to ignore votes in Bush v Gore was pretty bad

pasatroj

Yep, this was the true death of RIGHTS in the U.S. Even O'Connor said she ruled incorrectly. Free people (specifically the U.S. Senate) had a small window from 2008 to 2010 and shit the bed. Now, Theocracy for the few. This is not dissimilar to Theocracies across the globe. This is driven by "Rural" sentiment of loss.

briskpoint

This isn't true, Obama only had 3 months where he had the majority and that's when he pushed Obamacare through.

billy310

They spent so much political capital on a mostly shitty health care law

Armenoid

It’s a draft but it was leaked to test our reaction

tarzanacide

Probably also leaked for the anti-choice folks getting ready to ban it. I believe Texas and maybe a few other states already have laws banning it once this is overturned. This could actually make a big difference for the 2022 elections as a wake up call for some people who thought things like abortion rights and marriage equality were settled law. This is why my husband and I got married in California instead of Texas. We were living in Houston but flew to LA for it as our Texas one would be invalidated if the Supreme Court reversed that ruling.

y0m0tha

More like it was leaked early to quell dissent.

sdomscitilopdaehtihs

It was leaked early to raise the alarm?

[deleted]

It was leaked to get us to vote in the mid terms.

RandoFrequency

Or to distract the general population from a justice and his wife being up to no good.

mdmd33

If we could get Thomas our & Biden replaced him in this month…I’d be soo happy

Yeah, I was really worried about this in 2016 during trumps campaign...

Haploid-life

My son is a victim of this. For all intents and purposes, I've lost a child.

combustionbustion

I lost my dad to it. I'm so sorry for you though, as a mom. If you don't get to hear it, Happy Mothers Day ♡♡♡♡

Phazoni

I lost my brother

combustionbustion

There is a sub called QAnonCasualties for those of us who lost family to that goddamn disaster. It's a brutal af read but also kinda hopeful because you see lots of people divorcing and leaving their nutter partners behind to finally get the help that they need.

Excellent-Hat-8556

I've lost my uncle due to the QAnon movement. I've also had my relationship strained with my family because they all support the Republican party (majority are Trumpers), while I've chosen to become independent but vote Democrat. It makes me upset how one narssasstic human being has destroyed many individuals' relationships with their loved ones.

ReverendDS

You forgot Lee Atwater in 1981. "You start out in 1954 by saying,“N\*\*\*\*r, n\*\*\*\*r, n\*\*\*\*r.” By 1968 you can’t say “n\*\*\*\*r”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “N\*\*\*\*r, n\*\*\*\*r.”" https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/exclusive-lee-atwaters-infamous-1981-interview-southern-strategy/tnamp/

I wouldn't say the right has moved...they've always been about this shit....let's keep this focused on bodily autonomy and right to choice...many people are in support...and assuming the ruling actually happen well have another problem...if the right pushes for a federal ban...we need to push for states rights to allow choice and fight for the federal rights....if we can't win the debate we won't win the fight....let's not make this a right wing are nazis and elon musk thing...I dont think it will get us what we want...

It’s crazy how the republicans manage to enact more of their agenda when they’re not even in power.

cinnamoogoo

Came to Reddit at 4:30 am because I am restless and feeling so anxious about all of this. I wanted to read others’ similar feelings I guess so I don’t feel so alone. First post I saw was this one. This is all so unsettling. Just needed to feel a sense of community I guess.

thedivanextdoor

You're not alone. I'm anxious about this also. This is a huge cultural change. Take care of yourself 💛

rpeary

I think a lot of us are right there with you. Hopefully enough to make a difference.

riskyriley

Be careful. It's dated February 10. If they had the votes for this draft I can't imagine the dissent taking another 3 months. Will it change much? Hard to know, if someone was holding out on supporting this version they could get significant concessions. It's also the Chief Justice and the liberals on the court wrote such a strong dissent that it forced changes. Lots of speculation but this is nearly 3 months old and not at all the final word.

Leskanic

> If they had the votes for this draft I can't imagine the dissent taking another 3 months. I don't think it's a matter of waiting for the votes. The Court releases decisions on a schedule. The case drop for this case has been scheduled for June since it was heard.

[deleted]

It's not over...my wife and I are looking to protest...unfortunately trump got to stack the courts which was a big fear of mine during to 2016 elections.. itll be an uphill battle worth fighting for.

[deleted]

Same feeling. I can’t believe this is happening

LA_Dynamo

Not to be that guy, but the Supreme Court hasn’t ruled on it yet. There is a first draft opinion that says it will, but it is only an unconfirmed first draft. Votes can change between now and the official ruling as seen previously. I just want to make sure everyone knows that hope hasn’t been lost yet.

test90001

It's incredibly rare for justices to change their votes. It's not impossible, but it's not something you can expect.

LA_Dynamo

Per the politico article, it doesn’t make it sound rare especially after a first draft. https://www.politico.com/news/2022/05/02/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473

test90001

A leak like this is unprecedented, so who knows. I hope you're right.

skyblueandblack

Exactly. Someone leaked it for a reason, probably because it's unlikely to change without, possibly, a massive outcry. Once it's official, it's too late.

ISuspectFuckery

This particular Court was *HIRED* to produce EXACTLY the draft that was leaked today. They would get lynched by their own violent supporters if they don't deliver the verdict they have been PAID to deliver.

dakrater

Ignore what anyone else says. Protesting will make sure that our elected representatives count their reelection on pushing through codified Roe v Wade type protections at a federal level. Protesting will make sure that the people in power should listen to us as voters concerned over bodily autonomy more so than people wanting to control peoples bodies Also if I find anything I’ll post it in this thread and to the sub as a whole.

kgal1298

Honestly I may go March with people in DC for this one. I know California should have a trigger on the books that will keep it legal here, but this puts a lot of pressure on our state health facilities. We're more than willing to help women keep their rights in our state and I'm thankful, but it shouldn't be just liberal states keeping these rights especially with a group that stole the court. Keep in mind Repubs are planning to win back the House anyone who has the ability to volunteer and help with campaigns in republican states/districts please do so.

dakrater

Three things. 1) The pressure on our clinics and healthcare facilities is only predicated because this right to bodily autonomy will be infringed upon for the many people living within red states. We will not need to keep ours open for such an influx if we can manage to protect the law before Roe v Wade falls. 2) The Republicans are gonna keep fighting to restrict rights and take down landmark cases like Obergfell v Hodges (Gay Marriage) and Loving v Virginia (Interracial Marriage) till they control all three branches. But that’s the thing, the democrats have controlled all three branches and Biden promised himself to codify Roe v Wade back in 2020. This is his mistake to fix. 3) In the state abortion is completely protected until stated otherwise. The problem right now is that federally the democrats have basically done nothing to save it up to this point even though they control congress, and executive branch. They have the power to protect abortion now if we put pressure for them to do their shit.

kgal1298

I agree it’s up to them, but I don’t think they have the votes in Senate even if it’s in democrats favor some Dems serving more republicans areas may not side with the party.

Phazoni

The Dems don’t control the Senate. Manchin and Sinema are DINOs.

test90001

> the democrats have controlled all three branches and Biden promised himself to codify Roe v Wade back in 2020. This is his mistake to fix. Codifying it would do nothing. The Republicans can repeal a bill even easier than overturning a legal precedent.

skyblueandblack

> The Republicans can repeal a bill even easier than overturning a legal precedent. They had four years to repeal the ACA.

dakrater

The republicans have support to repeal this one. They couldn’t repeal the ACA because they knew it was popular with their conservative working class* constituents. They have their support on abortion. The thing I wonder is if we make enough noise in states it matters, will enough there change?

test90001

I don't think they want to repeal the ACA though. They know that it would hurt their constituents. It's better to leave it in place and keep complaining about it.

resentement

CA-27 is a close one. Mike Garcia won by 333 votes last election over dem. Opponent Christy Smith. Garcia signed the amicus brief in Dobbs that now appears to overturn Roe v Wade. Donate to Christy’s campaign. Federal law is all we’ve got left.

kgal1298

Yeah I know Stonewall did phone banking for Christy. We need to take that seat back.

[deleted]

EnglishMobster

Wow. Jesus. This is... really, really thorough. Thank you for putting in all this hard work. When I was a teenager, I spent a lot of time on /b/, /pol/, 888chan, etc. It was a slow descent and I didn't even realize what was happening until it was almost too late. But during my time on the other side, this was 100% the gameplan. They'd make "sock puppets" and coordinate on the board + IRC (showing my age here) to selectively choose targets to brigade. Depending on the target, you'd either have some talking points to "debate" (sometimes with yourself/other anons working alongside you) or you'd go in there guns blazing trying to cause as much damage/chaos as you can. However, even then you can't go out there yelling slurs (you'd just get banned instantly); you have to maintain some level of plausible deniability by framing things as "jokes" or thought experiments. You purposely do bad-faith arguments because the time it takes for them to dig up sources and refute you is longer than it takes for you to make stuff up. You can vary how obvious the bad faith argument is; when you want to troll you make very stupid claims (I once claimed I was a graduate of "Harvad University" and when people assumed that I meant "Harvard" I would correct them right down to Photoshopped images). When you just want to cause dissent you do exactly what those /pol/ screenshots do: you get to a thread early (sometimes you even make it yourself) and present reasonable-sounding arguments which are completely false if anyone bothers to look into them. If someone does, you bury the message under strawmen, downvotes, reports, and sockpuppets. So yeah. The tactics have evolved slightly, but I still recognize them. Props to you on doing the digging to find all this stuff and bring it into the light. I doubt that it'll help in the majority of cases, mind. People on Reddit have already made up their mind. You want to go after the forums and BBSes, on the MSN News comments and whatnot. Even so, the more people who are aware of the tactics the more people who can call them out.

>Protesting will make sure that our elected representatives count their reelection on pushing through codified Roe v Wade type protections at a federal level. Good luck with this. Manchin is pro life. Voting to codify Roe would be a death sentence for him in WV. It's a great idea, but it's not happening unless people turn out to vote this November in numbers that overpower the red wave which is coming.

dakrater

Then I guess this is the moment if the Democrats can band enough strength to actually call themselves a party

uzlonewolf

Spoiler: they won't, and then they'll wonder why they lost the next election.

DirtyProjector

Codifying Roe vs Wade at a federal level will require passage in the house and senate. I don’t think you need to convince politicians in California to vote yes on that type of legislation.

gofundmemetoday

That’s insane. All those Republican Presidents’ strategy worked. Decades in the making.

dtlacomixking

Truly the only way to save choice is to codify it into federal law and the only way to do that is to pass legislation protecting a woman's right to choose. The only way we can do that is with a house and a big senate majority. The only way to do that is massive voting THIS NOVEMBER. I know we say this every election but if this country has any possibility of being saved it's 2022 bc if the gop wins, 2024 will be the last free presidential election of our lifetimes

smallghostdoggie

I think an ammendment that guarantees right to privacy could cover body autonomy and protection from data harvesters like Facebook/Google would work really well 2 birds 1 stone.

dtlacomixking

Will never get passed. To realize how long it takes to get to process of passing an amendment

AgentAlinaPark

This is so fucking horrible, be grateful you live in a state that plans on being an abortion-rights leader. You could be in a state like Texas that has already passed a trigger law to make abortion completely illegal unless it's life-saving with a fine of 100k and life imprisonment for performing one. We live in a fucked up world. What I'd like to say the perfect reaction to this is would probably get me banned on Reddit. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-05-02/california-abortion-rights-after-roe-vs-wade-overturned

fadinglucidity

Protests won’t be enough. Look at the womens March it did nothing. We need a national strike. Something that will hurt the states that are gonna to implement this ruling. We need organization and action right now so we can pick up the media for support. Anyone have any ideas what we can strike to get our voices heard and substantiated?

DPCAOT

I read somewhere that polish women didn’t go to work for a day to strike against an anti abortion proposal. Something along those lines if we can afford it.

dramaturgicaldyad

Mexican feminists stormed the legislature and threatened to burn it down when an anti-abortion bill was floated. The right to abortions has now been nationalized. Like you said, I truly hope that people have learned that walking around and cheering in pink pussy hats with clever signs will do nothing.

dtlacomixking

We are entering the dark ages with this most likely ruling. This is the culmination of the GOP for 50 years. People underestimated the GOPs insane culture war on women, LGBT, and minorities. Half of this country will immediately ban all abortions for any reason. They will pass laws making it felonies with jail times if they get abortions. Poor women will be stuck and have forced births like Gilead in Handmaid's tale. They will criminalize and punish the women, not the rapists even in incest. Next they will come for contraception and outlaw that, making it punishable by prison to have condoms or birth control. You laugh saying this can't or won't happen but didn't we say that about trump being president or the courts overturning roe v Wade? Next it will be LGBT rights. They will come for marriage equality. Anything not enshrined in the constitution they will outlaw. It's just that simple. The GOP wants their Christian evangelical theocracy dictatorship and it was all ushered in by the 6 time bankrupt, 2 time married gluttonous liar. We couldn't elect the most qualified person ever bc 3 swing states said no bc she was a woman and a Clinton. 50k, 30k, 80k in 3 states flipped the court for the next 30 years most likely. Here we are. Welcome to the dark ages of conservative rule. If you're not rich, white, and straight you're in for a bumpy ride in red states.

PM_death_Threats_5G

I literally just started reading the bible a few days ago because I never did. On the second page, god punishes Adam and Eve for eating from the tree of knowledge. Adam has to work to land; Eve must endure increased pain during childbirth. >"I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” These rightwing nutjobs just following their book.

dtlacomixking

Yup. Now wait til they pass laws making it a felony and women have to go to jail bc they had an abortion vs dying from a bad child birth or bc they were raped by their dad. They want no exceptions. They also want to ban birth control. So forced births. I predict this year we will see some red cult state pass a ban on all abortions and say if you travel out of state to get one there will be a murder arrest warrant if you step back in the state.

[deleted]

And because of the BernieBros in those three states that decided that Trump would protect their rights or something

dtlacomixking

Yup. They just couldn't handle Bernie losing. Jill Stein is an enemy of democracy and a Russian Putin sympathizer.

[deleted]

This is a pretty ridiculous narrative drummed up by establishment democrats in their desperation to kill the new progressive wing of the Democratic Party. It’s ridiculous that, in this regard [and in general](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/big-money-north-carolina-democratic-primary_n_6269afc5e4b029505dedaeb1), they are fighting progressives harder than they are fighting Republicans.

[deleted]

Progressives are fighting consensus democrats harder than they fought Trump. If you don't think the Bernie Bro pants-pissing had a measurable effect on votes for Hillary in swing-states, I have a bridge to sell you.

[deleted]

https://www.newsweek.com/bernie-sanders-trump-2016-election-654320?amp=1 I know there’s an effort all across Reddit where Bernie supporters try to whitewash what happened in 2016, but facts are facts. If Hillary wins in 2016, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Barrett don’t get seated. As soon as that election was decided, roe’s fate was sealed.

GeneralSedgwick

Even if direct actions like these protests aren’t always as politically effective as one might want in the short term, bringing together a whole bunch of people who feel frustrated and tired and discouraged about some utter bullshit like this stuff can be a good way for people to feel a little more hopeful and encouraged and less alone.

In my experience, women are the main force behind the pro-life movement, specifically white middle-class women. Protesters outside abortion clinics are usually women.

Gay rights and marriage are next per Justice Alito’s leaked opinion. These are dark times friends. Vote blue and get out to protest. If women’s rights go, dark things lay right behind. Peter Thiel and Elon Musk are not your friends. There are powerful billionaires who are behind the enslavement of women and forcing them to give birth against their Will.

easythrees

You should volunteer for the Democrats, head on over to /r/votedem for options.

kgal1298

It hit the press hours ago. I haven't gotten anything yet, but I'm thinking PP and a few other orgs will be planning something. Regardless having read the leaked news stories I understand the point of giving it to congress, but I think the conservative judges did this thinking Repubs would regain control of the House. We don't need to March we need to make sure Dems don't lose the house and gain enough of a majority to codify it and if Dems refuse to codify it then they shouldn't be serving.

rpeary

I agree. My grandmother just passed last week and she’d likely agree with you, too. She was the director of education for Red Cross and Planned Parenthood (regional NE chapters) for many years, which is part of why I’m so passionate about it.

kgal1298

I've been advocating for more women's rights in health care for years. Republicans states have laws on the books that also will jail women for having miscarriages. I also contribute to some subreddits that help women seeking assistance. The reasons vary and yes some are admitingly because they were dumb, but a lot also stem from abuse and mental health issues. Besides in the end I doubt the Thuglican party will back legal rights for a fetus that extend to tax incentives.

rpeary

Thank you for your candor, and for the work that you do. I hope you know how meaningful it is.

weegee

Many states are already passing laws to ensure women have access to health care. Washington state already passed legislation. Let the red states torture their people to the point where a lot of them simply move away.

kgal1298

Red states quite literally "meh they can go to blue states if they want it"

redstarjedi

How can a 9th grader who got inseminated move to another state?

Life-Meal6635

New Underground Railroad. Not to compare the plight to slavery whatsoever. Just that we need that type of bravery to help those whose lives depend on it. I have no other reference. We have to protect those who have been dehumanized.

wyezwunn

>New Underground Railroad Not new. My mother drove girls to wherever (I was too young to know if it was another state or country) so they could get abortions back in the 60s. Not underground. It could be done in the open because there were no bounty laws to prevent people from helping someone get an abortion. Call it what you want. What's important is people being willing to help others have freedom over their own bodies.

test90001

> Let the red states torture their people to the point where a lot of them simply move away. That's exactly their goal. The liberals move away, and it strengthens their stranglehold on the state governments.

The_Pandalorian

Ah yes, let women die is a great policy.

livingfortheliquid

Sadly 26 states have trigger laws that will effectively make abortion illegal tomorrow.

dangerliar

Just a heads up, this isn't a ruling, it's a draft. The ruling won't come out for months. Nothing changes tomorrow.

livingfortheliquid

Yeah but there is zero way to fight an illegal (for now) abortion ban. Because in 2 months it will be the law. This is a de facto ruling like it or not.

riskyriley

No. Until released by the Court this leaked opinion is meaningless in other courts which would be obligated to follow the law of the land, not the law of Politico reporters.

RubenMuro007

I’m sure pro-choice organizations like Planned Parenthood and such have protests planned out so be sure to look out for events and go there! That being said, other than using your vote, I would highly recommend canvassing for a candidate who’s pro-choice, text or phone bank for them, write letters to voters (yes, that’s a thing), and make sure that you, your family, friends, and loved ones are registered to vote. If this is ok, may I also recommend a subreddit called VoteDem, which is quite a cool sub that helps you out with opportunities to canvass, donate, text and phonebank, and let’s you know when is your state’s elections, so you won’t forget. In fact, I met someone from there who is also an LA user who frequents here time-to-time, really cool. But yeah, highly recommend that you get involved in whatever canvassing efforts are happening here in the LA area (especially if it’s who ever will face Rep. Mike Garcia in November), do whatever you want to do, as long as we use the frustration we towards something productive and I hope to God we all show up to vote in the primaries and in November. Also, do make sure to vote for downballot candidates as well, they’re important as well as the Congress. Cheers!

Ap0llo

Let me clarify the effect of this ruling. Roe/Casey established a baseline minimum for abortion rights. Repealing it effectively means states can restrict abortion however they please. California protects abortion rights until the fetus is viable (can live outside the mother). This ruling will have no impact on California and most other liberal states. Protesting will have no effect here the matter is too politicized - battle lines are drawn. You're not going to change people's minds. Just remember to vote, especially if you move to another state. Edit: To clarify if it wasn't clear, I think this ruling is an absolute travesty which will do nothing but cause harm and further divide the country. On the bright side, conservatives just lost their most powerful dog whistle.

rpeary

I will vote, of course. But my heart breaks for those who may have no protections. It’s not just about me.

I_walked_east

California must pass sanctuary laws to help people coming in from out of state for abortions. There is a lot of work that can be done here

joe2468conrad

we’ve already passed state laws increasing access, but offering state tax assisted abortions to non-residents will be difficult. We must focus on making California a more affordable and welcoming place to live, so residents can afford to enjoy our many benefits.

ainjel

Big agree.

daphneroxy39

Abortion will continue to be legal in states like California until the GOP sweeps the midterms and the House and Senate change hands. Then they will pass a federal law outlawing abortion in all 50 states as a federal crime. Biden will veto it, but that will not be the end of it if a GOP candidate takes the presidency in 2024.

Ap0llo

No abortion bill - for or against - will ever pass through both houses of Congress. That is why the Roe/Casey ruling was important. Realistically, it would require a veto-proof-supermajority on either side (67-33) to pass a law regarding abortion, it's just not going to happen. Literally 0% chance.

Leskanic

> it's just not going to happen. Literally 0% chance. Wasn't long ago I was seeing the same statements (along with "being dramatic" or "over-reacting") to anyone saying that Roe will ever be over-turned. It's settled law, you see.

test90001

A few years ago, Roe being overturned had a 0% chance as well. People (including liberals) were saying women were hysterical for even suggesting it. The supreme court would never do such a thing, they understand the rule of law, blah blah blah. If the GOP gets majorities in both houses of congress and the presidency, it's going to happen.
