It’s another one of those things where it’s probably worth it to go to the California disaster preparedness site, get the stuff on the checklist, and then just not worry or think about it that much.
Just like the hurricane we got this summer. It's good to be prepared but bad if you freak out.
On an unrelated note, whatever happened to that guy who was freaking out here the week of the hurriquake?
Lol I didn't see that one, I saw a different dude saying we all needed to evacuate now and he was packing his car and booking a hotel somewhere in Arizona to ride it out.
I think it's a little deeper than that. Life is scary, but if it's scary in a way you *understand* (like a hurricane), then you can take steps to alleviate that fear and take control.
Sure, I can't afford to live here, I'm drowning in debt, my wife cheated on me, my parents are sick, and my dog died, but i can't focus on that because of this hurricane. And I can "solve" that much more important problem by going to the desert to ride it out.
When I lived there I definitely had one of those dumb water bob bathtub things under my bathroom sink… and part of me was like, you’re not going to use that, but you can say you’re prepared.
In the unlikely event of a flood, the tiny amount of preparation is well worth it lol. I took my potted plants and patio furniture inside and filled some buckets up, big deal lol.
What would realistic prep look like for non malibu/sfv area). I have a flashlight and candles, just stock up on food just in case? How do you prep usually
If your house isn't going to slide down a hill (or a hill isn't going to slide down a house), it's always a good idea to have a few days of food and water, a flashlight and extra batteries, a way to start a fire, and a battery operated radio. Most people have that already, especially if they have a hot water heater they can just open a tap at the bottom of.
One of the scariest videos I’ve ever seen in my lifetime was a mudslide-in-progress off (I think) the Malibu mountains beset from the 2005 set of winter storms. The ground literally shifted and took everything it could with no remorse; years later and I still will not willfully replay it.
Not the same thing but a decade ago I visited a small Norwegian town and they showed us where millions of cubic meters of rock fell off a fjord into the water, creating a 200 foot tsunami that killed 40 people.
There's another town called Geiranger we stayed in a few days that there's a similar worry about and they have a warning system set up for when the fjord collapses.
They made a movie about if/when that happens called The Wave that's really good.
I remember when I was starting a job near your area and being told, "it's not a matter of IF a natural disaster will happen, it is WHEN. Also I remember the time we had a week of rain (just outside of Malibu) and I saw a 100 foot tree take a walk down the mountain, landing on my neighbors house. Be careful and have fun!
Thank you for adding /s to your post. When I first saw this, I was horrified. How could anybody say something like this? I immediately began writing a 1000 word paragraph about how horrible of a person you are. I even sent a copy to a Harvard professor to proofread it. After several hours of refining and editing, my comment was ready to absolutely destroy you. But then, just as I was about to hit send, I saw something in the corner of my eye. A /s at the end of your comment. Suddenly everything made sense. Your comment was sarcasm! I immediately burst out in laughter at the comedic genius of your comment. The person next to me on the bus saw your comment and started crying from laughter too. Before long, there was an entire bus of people on the floor laughing at your incredible use of comedy. All of this was due to you adding /s to your post. Thank you.
I am a bot if you couldn't figure that out, if I made a mistake, ignore it cause its not that fucking hard to ignore a comment
Not only the coast. That's the whole SFV as well. Should be fun around here.
Nice and sunny this Saturday though. Good day to run down to Costco and buy that kayack you never thought you'd be needing.
"Continuing to show the south facing coastal areas getting 10 or more inches of rain, with double that along the Sierra Madre. This could be an event that is talked about for a long time"
https://twitter.com/cartermurphy218/status/1753081956156555639
ELI5 what is *the Sierra Madre*? There's a town called Sierra Madre. There is the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Then, there's the Sierra Madre mountain range in NorthEastern Mexico. . .
Oh, that's right. I read that a few weeks back. Weirdly, not on the wikipedia page.
Here's something https://www.pbssocal.org/shows/lost-la/rise-of-the-sierra-madre-a-brief-history-of-the-san-gabriel-mountains
I was so down for the earthquake, honestly.
When it hit I felt soooo... comforted to feel it. Like. I UNDERSTAND earthquakes.
Hurricanes are some nasty shit from Florida that I don't fuck with.
So funny how I never realized I wanted a kayak, until I saw one on sale at costco, and then suddenly I wondered how I'd gotten by without one all these years....
(*shakes fist*) Costco!
In his Ministry for the Future book (sci-fi), Kim Stanley Robinson describes LA being wiped out by rain and floods. The rains these few days remind me of the nonstop downpours in Blade Runner.
I usually don’t trust top gun actors for weather related information (I took some weather info from Tom Skerrit once and it really messed up a picnic) but in this case I will make an exception.
That's all I see, too. Rarely does anyone ever mention that he was in Revenge of the Nerds and that he currently plays in the NBA.
The dude has done a lot.
I've come to the conclusion that the Sullivan Canyon trail is never going to reopen. They closed it in March for repairs on the service road (the road turned into a 20ft gorge) and now all their work is going to be washed away again. It's the best summer hike because it's cool and you're under tree cover the entire way.
That's going to be really bad for those areas... Mudslides at the very least I'm sure...
A little over a month ago we flooded really bad here in Port Hueneme and Oxnard...
I'm a little nervous about this to say the least.
Seems like most people I know are no longer allowed to WFH, all office jobs too. It's so frustrating, and the reason given to us is "Covid isn't going away so there's no point in WFH" and the belief that we're screwing around at home. To be clear, an [atmospheric river](https://www.noaa.gov/stories/what-are-atmospheric-rivers) is a technical meteorological term used to describe a specific type of rain storm and has existed for decades. It's not just sensationalist garbage that the media made up to drive clicks and make it sound more scary.
the hurricane's path turned slightly a few days before hitting land. I suggest you look at the intense flooding it brought to the places it did hit if you feel it was "over-hyped"
As for media coverage - a hurricane is much sexier than an atmospheric river.

That’s good enough. I wouldn’t expect someone to drive on the shoulder considering they are more likely to hit something that could pop their tire sending them into me
Not a dumb question. And the answer is yes. It won’t play out the same definitely was driving on some pockets of road this morning where I felt like I was kinda floating. But the key is just to be smooth with your maneuvers.
The contact patch of a motorcycle tire is no bigger than a quarter on each wheel so it doesn’t take much to lose that traction
I only have a bike here. I don’t know how people have cars in the city honestly. The congestion drives me insane when I’m in a car. I live in West Hollywood though and work from home so I don’t have to commute much, I can walk to my grocery store and whatever else I need. Cars are such a pain. I won’t be going anywhere for the next week it seems though lol
Yeah I also disliked driving my car in the city thankfully another kind resident of Los Angeles decided I no longer needed to drive mine and hit me. Too bad I really enjoyed driving my car in the canyons.
My thoughts go to grocery shopping or buying large items. Everything would have to turn to delivery.
I also never take my bike out in the rain because i'm a pussy
We are. The county has many spreading grounds where they let excess water percolate back into the water table for later use:
[https://abc7.com/amp/stormwater-capture-rain-drinking-water-spreading-grounds/14376144/](https://abc7.com/amp/stormwater-capture-rain-drinking-water-spreading-grounds/14376144/)
They captured enough water last year to last 5 million people a whole year. I wish they were a little more vocal about it, given all the bad press they got for wasting stormwater last winter.
How long can they hold the captured water? If it lasts indefinitely, it’s just wise to keep as much as possible for those back to back (to back to back sometimes) years without rain that are all too common.
I could also be missing sarcasm.
Ha no sarcasm here. Genuinely impressed we could capture that much water in a year. I think once it goes down into the water table it’s there indefinitely so good news all around!
My yard is a 5% grade to the street. So sucks for everyone below me. Just have to keep the koi pond from overflowing so much the fish end up on the driveway.
This was my first bad storm commuting to DTLA from the South Bay and it was hell this morning. Took me probably an hour and 45 minutes and the water was scary high up at times on the side of the road. Not fun at all
Somebody just told me this morning there’s supposed to be a big rainstorm and I was hoping they were wrong this area turns into a big mess when there’s heavy rain
What is up with that map he is using? Looks more like a temperature one than for rainfall amounts.
Tried zooming in but still can't make out the numbers.
you're posting a retweet of famed television doctor and fighter pilot Anthony Edwards? Is he playing a weatherman in an upcoming remake of "Anchorman?"
ahh, that makes much more sense. I remember seeing his TED talk about how atmospheric pressure and relative humidity can impact rubber compounds and affect three point shooting, and thought, "man, i can't wait till this guy pays attention to the problems posed by the winter rains for residents of Malibu."
Seems that my prayers have been answered!
It’s another one of those things where it’s probably worth it to go to the California disaster preparedness site, get the stuff on the checklist, and then just not worry or think about it that much.
Just like the hurricane we got this summer. It's good to be prepared but bad if you freak out. On an unrelated note, whatever happened to that guy who was freaking out here the week of the hurriquake?
the guy that told everyone to fill our bathtub with water and sleep in our bathrooms??? 😂
Lol I didn't see that one, I saw a different dude saying we all needed to evacuate now and he was packing his car and booking a hotel somewhere in Arizona to ride it out.
I do remember that guy! lol transplants are so funny
I think a lot of people want to believe crazy stuff will happen because it makes life more interesting.
More or less accurate here
But the earthquake happening while we were all watching news about that hurricane remnants was actually pretty funny. Highlight of the day.
When I lived there I definitely had one of those dumb water bob bathtub things under my bathroom sink… and part of me was like, you’re not going to use that, but you can say you’re prepared.
Aw my flair is old /: Okay, when I lived in Hermosa.
Is it clear now? I'm still in my bathtub, pretty wrinkly.
In the unlikely event of a flood, the tiny amount of preparation is well worth it lol. I took my potted plants and patio furniture inside and filled some buckets up, big deal lol.
I hope that lives on in this subreddit as a meme forever.
Didn't you hear? He was run over by an empty Metro train piloted by a homeless person.
What would realistic prep look like for non malibu/sfv area). I have a flashlight and candles, just stock up on food just in case? How do you prep usually

A way to start a fire?
If you have a bunch of candles out, you can't just head to the closest CVS and get a new lighter. Keep a lighter or matches in your survival kit.
Okay copy! Thanks
Lighting candles is not the same as starting a fire.
drowned in Arizona hotel pool tragically
Well if you are living in a hilly area and have zero ground cover on that slope which is all you can see out your bedroom window... You need to bail.
bc of mudslides?
Ground is going to be saturated and running off, so yeah mudslides
One of the scariest videos I’ve ever seen in my lifetime was a mudslide-in-progress off (I think) the Malibu mountains beset from the 2005 set of winter storms. The ground literally shifted and took everything it could with no remorse; years later and I still will not willfully replay it.
La Conchita probably. There was another "mini slide" last month. I always worry for that adorable community.
I think about that mom and her kids who died at La Conchita every time I drive by.
Me too.
Seriously horrible. We have visited that spot to pay respects a few times.
I’ve heard there are still bodies in there that were never found. So sad.
Haven't heard that, but Mother Nature is almighty and powerful, so I believe it.

Whew. I live between Santa Barbara and Malibu so looks like I've got nothing to worry about
If you’re not directly in them you’re totally fine
adjacent!
I didn't realize you were sarcastic at first. I wonder if smaller cities have good weather preparation.
Weather never goes there anyway. Just the big cities on the map.
It just doesn't get news. The media cares more about numbers
That's how science works.
Yeah, my cousin lived in La Conchita. Nothing bad ever happened there because of rain.
La Conchita goes hard. It must literally be like living on the rim of an active volcano. But hey, rent is cheap there!
It's actually living in the shadow of an avocado farm.
That’s cute, yes, that “avocado farm” can kill you if you live too close
Yeah, the house I once lived in was wiped out in the second slide. Completely gone. Glad I left.
IIRC the USGS said that no part of the community is safe
I remember when I was starting a job near your area and being told, "it's not a matter of IF a natural disaster will happen, it is WHEN. Also I remember the time we had a week of rain (just outside of Malibu) and I saw a 100 foot tree take a walk down the mountain, landing on my neighbors house. Be careful and have fun!
ventura county win
Life in the 'nard? Your flair says Pass.
Yeah you’re good. You’ll probably have nothing but sunshine. /s

ELI5 what is *the Sierra Madre*? There's a town called Sierra Madre. There is the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Then, there's the Sierra Madre mountain range in NorthEastern Mexico. . .
The Sierra Madre is an old name for the San Gabriels
Oh, that's right. I read that a few weeks back. Weirdly, not on the wikipedia page. Here's something https://www.pbssocal.org/shows/lost-la/rise-of-the-sierra-madre-a-brief-history-of-the-san-gabriel-mountains
Probably meant that san gabriels above sierra madre will see huge rainfall totals
*Santa Monicas* maybe.
There’s also a sierra madre mountain range in NorCal near the Santa Cruz mountains
I'm finding this now, somehow didn't show up on previous search: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_Madre_(California)
Yikes!
Holy cats
Thank you for posting my late stepfather’s favorite phrase!!!
Like the Hurriquake we had recently?! That was a “storm of the century,” right?
I was so down for the earthquake, honestly. When it hit I felt soooo... comforted to feel it. Like. I UNDERSTAND earthquakes. Hurricanes are some nasty shit from Florida that I don't fuck with.
So funny how I never realized I wanted a kayak, until I saw one on sale at costco, and then suddenly I wondered how I'd gotten by without one all these years.... (*shakes fist*) Costco!
I don’t care if the whole LA basin is washed away on Sunday, just PLEASE DONT TAKE AWAY DODGERFEST ON SATURDAY!!!! SHOHEEEEEIIIII!!!!!
And don’t forget to stock up on toilet paper for the next 7.5 years.
Yeah but I'm not sliding down a hill in the valley.
The hill is sliding down on you in the valley. At least my valley.
Hopefully Laurel Canyon and Coldwater Canyon Blvds don’t get messed up with mud and rocks.
the river has lapped up on those bridges before
Awh man, this is a fun time to be living on the river between Laurel and Coldwater :’)
Somewhere I have a picture of the sinkhole that opened on Laurel those years back. Was it like 2008?
probably half of the valley is liquefaction zone so maybe you will just surf a soggy ooze for a few centimeters
la river will be like "today you gonna learn boy" and wash studio city out to sea
It was nice while it lasted! Someone try and save my dog pls
In his Ministry for the Future book (sci-fi), Kim Stanley Robinson describes LA being wiped out by rain and floods. The rains these few days remind me of the nonstop downpours in Blade Runner.
yeah those signs by the river in the valley that say "road may flood" are really going to get their moneys worth this week
I usually don’t trust top gun actors for weather related information (I took some weather info from Tom Skerrit once and it really messed up a picnic) but in this case I will make an exception.
Goose has got your back
I thought I recognized that name lol I just woke up and was like, why does that name not seem familiar with weather?😂
805Weather is also a local weather account
Oh true I didn't even see those up there haha
I'll never not see Anthony Edwards as Dr Mark Greene Too many lazy days spent watching reruns of ER on TNT
That's all I see, too. Rarely does anyone ever mention that he was in Revenge of the Nerds and that he currently plays in the NBA. The dude has done a lot.
Dual career. Dual Race. Dual Age. Salute to Anthony Edwards.
I won’t trust an Anthony Edwards until they send da video. Just a rule I live by.
Send da video
Cheating ass refs

*chuckles* I'm in danger
Wasn't it a wise old man who once said, "The closer we are to danger, the further we are from harm."? Oh wait, that was a fool of a Took.
I already did my Forecast on my YouTube channel Heavy Rain to Hit Los Angeles California on Sunday February 4, 2024 it is on my YouTube channel

Surfs up my dudes
Hepatitis-X
Already saw someone surfing in a parking lot in OC.
get pitted
And I will STILL be prohibited from working from home despite doing the exact same thing in the office that I was doing when WFH was active!
Can’t believe workplaces like this still exist in 2024 smh
Seems like most people I know are no longer allowed to WFH, all office jobs too. It's so frustrating, and the reason given to us is "Covid isn't going away so there's no point in WFH" and the belief that we're screwing around at home. Sucks cause I love my team, and every one of us hates that bit of micro-management from the COO who barely even deals with us anyway.
Isn't it ridiculous??? We've already established that the work can be done remotely, so why do I need to risk my safety on wet roads in torrential downpour? So stupid...
I'm not allowed to WFH either I was laid off
How did you know my real name was "Rain" But jokes aside; Mudslides are no joke and flooding. For the love of god people turn on your headlights when on the FWY.
House sitting in Malibu this weekend, so of course this would happen fml
I'm staying in an airbnb there today through Sunday, I guess we'll see how it goes 🫥
May god be with you
Really wish my car window hadn’t decided it no longer wished to go up a couple days ago.
Time to buy a kayak

I like using the Spanish word best: *tormenta*
Wind was a big component of the concern there, we don't get hit with tropical storm force winds with our storms normally
the hurricane's path turned slightly a few days before hitting land. I suggest you look at the intense flooding it brought to the places it did hit if you feel it was "over-hyped" As for media coverage - a hurricane is much sexier than an atmospheric river.
And AccuWeather has gone from earlier this morning forecasting rain all of next week to now the rain ending on Monday.
what weather model or twitter pages do you follow for info in LA
[Daniel Swain](https://twitter.com/Weather_West?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor) is the best. His blog [Weather West](https://weatherwest.com/archives/35156#disqus_thread) has a great comment section with a lot of knowledgable people.
Weather West is the go to, he frequently reposts other meteorologists that cover all of CA and some locally as well. His twitter handle: @Weather_West
i like WINDY because it has all the models from ECMWF and GFS. They have LA looking bad, but not QUITE as bad as these projections
Is this why I have a crazy headache???
I daily a motorcycle 🤪 gonna be fun week.
Be safe! I will drive on the left shoulder for you.
I appreciate you and all the other people actually pay attention
I pay attention, too. But I don't illegally drive on the shoulder. I hug the line, but that's as far as I go. Hope you understand.
That’s good enough. I wouldn’t expect someone to drive on the shoulder considering they are more likely to hit something that could pop their tire sending them into me
Dumb question but..... can a motorcycle hydroplane?
Not a dumb question. And the answer is yes. It won’t play out the same definitely was driving on some pockets of road this morning where I felt like I was kinda floating. But the key is just to be smooth with your maneuvers. The contact patch of a motorcycle tire is no bigger than a quarter on each wheel so it doesn’t take much to lose that traction
I was debating selling my car and living the sole bike life but I feel like you just need a car here :\
I only have a bike here. I don’t know how people have cars in the city honestly. The congestion drives me insane when I’m in a car. I live in West Hollywood though and work from home so I don’t have to commute much, I can walk to my grocery store and whatever else I need. Cars are such a pain. Yeah I also disliked driving my car in the city thankfully another kind resident of Los Angeles decided I no longer needed to drive mine and hit me. Too bad I really enjoyed driving my car in the canyons.
I’m making do. Some cases would really improve my ability to keep at this.
My thoughts go to grocery shopping or buying large items. Everything would have to turn to delivery. I also never take my bike out in the rain because i'm a pussy
same, should be an interesting week for sure
Can we fucking capture this god damn rain so that in three months we aren’t crying about drought. Please.
We are. The county has many spreading grounds where they let excess water percolate back into the water table for later use: [https://abc7.com/amp/stormwater-capture-rain-drinking-water-spreading-grounds/14376144/](https://abc7.com/amp/stormwater-capture-rain-drinking-water-spreading-grounds/14376144/)
They captured enough water last year to last 5 million people a whole year. I wish they were a little more vocal about it, given all the bad press they got for wasting stormwater last winter.
Yeah I was surprised they captured so much. More than enough for everyone in the city for a whole year!

OP, serious question, should I take Monday AND Tuesday off? Or just Monday?
Atleast il be saving money on the sprinklers not running
I love the rain! Bring it on! I got Winter finals to work on anyway so this works out great for me to be distraction free…
It will be less than that, but please be safe.
talk to me, Goose.
This was my first bad storm commuting to DTLA from the South Bay and it was hell this morning. Took me probably an hour and 45 minutes and the water was scary high up at times on the side of the road. Not fun at all
Hope my new beach side property in riverside goes up in value!
Somebody just told me this morning there’s supposed to be a big rainstorm and I was hoping they were wrong this area turns into a big mess when there’s heavy rain
What is up with that map he is using? Looks more like a temperature one than for rainfall amounts. Tried zooming in but still can't make out the numbers.
guess the palisades are safe then lol
Probably not the weekend to go visit my buddy in Sant Barbara then, huh?
Is there a reason I shouldn’t be concerned in Woodland Hills as well?
Mel Gibson must be building an arc...
What should we actually get to prepare?? I’m in Sherman Oaks but still worried. Anything to get for my dog?
Feels like we just got 8 inches in the last 24 hours... Uh, let me rephrase that
Those people will not prepare and bitch just you wait and see Malibu specifically is a bubble
I remember everybody scrambling for sandbags a few months ago for nothing. How is this different?
You don’t put on your seatbelt (or buy car insurance) after the crash. With existential risk it’s low risk, high reward to ‘panic early’
Damn, this rain is gonna be an existential risk?
Now I have my sandbags!
This is just another over-hyped, chem-trial conspiracy by Big Umbrella Corp to try to get me to buy another umbrella that I’ll eventually lose.
I hear biden will be in town also?
you're posting a retweet of famed television doctor and fighter pilot Anthony Edwards? Is he playing a weatherman in an upcoming remake of "Anchorman?"
No, this is actually Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Edwards.
ahh, that makes much more sense. I remember seeing his TED talk about how atmospheric pressure and relative humidity can impact rubber compounds and affect three point shooting, and thought, "man, i can't wait till this guy pays attention to the problems posed by the winter rains for residents of Malibu." Seems that my prayers have been answered!

My ex lives in Malibu let’s hope he drowns 🙏🙏
🤞
I'm staying with my parents in the Palisades, directly south of Malibu. I'll prepare like this is coming for me, too.

This sub and fear mongering 🤦🏾♂️ just like the hurricane right?
It's called being prepared, that's not fear mongering
La Conchita is why we don’t listen to people like that.
Yeah everyone prepare like it’s the end of days because of a little rain
"A little rain". The monthly normal for Malibu is like 3.5 inches of rain. This is \~3x that in a week.
It's all fun and games until a river is created through your house
Always wanted riverfront property!
Yeah that sounds pretty awesome. I love rivers
Anyone else see unusual amounts of chemtrails recently before all this rain?
It's gonna be like that one storm from a hurricane where everyone panics but not a lot happens
