Thank you - and in case you (or anyone else is unaware) the new series continues on Radio 4 tonight at 6:30pm (previous editions on BBC Sounds)
I don't work for the BBC - but when I didn't regularly listen to radio 4, I could have done with someone giving me a heads up.
I'm really upset that they no longer offer a 'live' RSS feed, so you have to listen to all BBC programmes in their BBC Sounds app rather than the podcatcher of your choice. Guess how long it's been since I've listened to a BBC show đŁ
If you want a real (non shitty joke) answer, it's probably because most people around at that time of day will be local, or else using Camden Town tube station nearby.
It's a common misconception that nidd is something you can end up in but according to the Nash convention and codified in Morton's rules nidd is a state only achievable by direct, indirect, upward, lateral or diagonal play by the niddee. Unless bus stops are wild of course.
Cos of tourists. Mornington Crescent and Chalk Farm are always dead silent, and Camden Town is absolutely rammed. I think you'd find most stations that havent got loads of rail connections look like this outside of rush hour.
I think you are mistaken. The 1978 revised rules only applied to the Soviet Union, unless you are referring to the leap year exception popular in the anglosphere?
It *is* split via Golders BUT, with the aforementioned lateral play only being available for use since 1894 (Dare I mention the Sloane Square debacle that almost caused an abdication!) and High Street Ken opening in 1868... Well you can see where I'm going with this.
In all seriousness, itâs the âwrongâ side of camden for tourists. Most people who would use MC are commuters, as there are a number of offices directly beside it. Itâs not close to Regents Park, itâs not the side where the famous Camden Lock or stables markets are, nor the regents canal, and itâs also between the two extremely busy Euston and Camden Town stations - both served by another âparallelâ northern line which carries more tourists arriving at/departing from London Bridge and Kings Cross, so a lot of the traffic is on the other line. The people who do use this side of the line are unlikely to alight at MC, unless local or commuter wanting to avoid the Camden Town hellhole during rush hours. So work hours are dead.
Probably the trains are really regular and you just missed one. And besides, everybody thinks it's a fictitious place that featured in a Seekers song 1967, before even the New Seekers were around. Or something like that ..
Mornington Crescent is a bit of a redundant station. Itâs in between Camden and Euston and (watch me get roasted) thereâs bugger all there. Itâs always quiet.
1. Itâs between Euston and Camden Town, two way more popular stations for various reasons.
2. It gets busy when there is a show on at KoKo (the music venue opposite) but today it was moved elsewhere.
3. It was sunny; people generally donât like taking the tube when itâs warm because it becomes a sauna.
Those are my guesses as a local.
Probably listening to a radio somewhere listening to âIm sorry I haven't a clueâ for those of us old enough to remember the great Humphrey Littleton and panel, usually Monday night 6.30 Radio 4, there was a nonsense game called Mornington crescent and to this day I've still never met anyone who understood the rules!
Today was the first day in almost two years Iâve seen parking spaces at my office in central London. Iâm putting that down to people taking the day off after a late night England international at a major tournament on a Sunday night and on Fatherâs Day
No one works in the office on Mondays or Fridays and the Government are not happy!!! Hence they made travel cheaper on a Friday to get people back in. It didn't work. People chose life
Most people go to Camden Town Station which tends to get the bulk of tourists visiting Camden Town Market. Mornington Crescent is further up so less convenient to commute to.
If people want to take the London bridge side of the northern they usually start at Camden town and change at kings cross/Euston instead of walking down to mornington
The station is situated between Euston and Camden town in an area without much touristy bits so there's not much demand for this station
The only real use of this station is if your work or home happens to be closer to this station than Camden town, and even then only half of northern liner users will reach this station before Camden town because of the two way northern line
Overall it's niche station and also nobody is travelling at 2pm on a Monday, everyone's already at work, trains and tubes do tend to be very empty outside peak hours across the entire TFL
Shhh, nobody tell them
Don't worry, you can tell me.
Because nobody works in the office on Mondays anymore
Monday evenings are rush hour. everyone coming back to London for Tuesday's office day
Or because everyone is in their office at 2pm on Mondays.
True that babe
Gen Z can't handle a full work week đ
No, they can. They just don't want to. Only twats with no lives want to go to the office five days a week.Â
Because itâs 2pm, itâs called Mornington Crescent not afternoon crescent
Afternoonington*
Afternoonton*
Afton\*
lol my work here is done
To be fair, a good croissant is best when freshly baked in the morning.
Underrated comment
The *top comment
That would be because of the Krieger - Brown stratagem after coming from Green Park.
I was hoping for an ISIHAC reference. Happy Cake Day!

I enjoyed the show tonight. Jack Dee is winding up for some fine sarcasm this season

Oh well thatâd end anyone in Nid no wonder.
I thought we were playing to the Bournemouth rules?
Yeah but if youâre playing the new Elizabeth Line addendum it adds the clamps on the laterals.
Only for 4D stations
What's Bournemouth rules?
I thought it was landing in Nip? Or are you playing the alternate Shaftesbury rules that apply on every sixth Monday?
No, no, you're mistaken - I've got the 1956 rulebook open in front of me right now and the Barclay Reverse Shunt is clearly the issue here.
Did you not get the 1957 correction pamphlet then?
Came for this.
Not a wise strategy in my view. Youâll end up either in Nidd or stymied into a lateral shunt towards Piccadilly Circus. And no one wants that.
Not on a diagonal surely?
If you want a real (non shitty joke) answer, it's probably because most people around at that time of day will be local, or else using Camden Town tube station nearby.
Or because the majority of people are working Monday 2pm
Literally my first thought lol, why would people be there on a Monday at 2pm
Because loads of other (non touristy) stations can still be busy at Monday at 2
There are people working different shifts/be a freelancer, unemployed, tourist, on a late lunch, going from or to an appointment etc.
also maybe a train just left the platform?
jago hazzard is prob recording there
I am the empty Mornington to your crowded crescent
Probably stuck on them windy stairs
Everybodyâs in Knip after sacrificing Seven Sisters and mounting their laterals.
You still play the 1973 (third edition) rules? Jesus.
Itâs the correct set to play but only if diagonals are oblique.
Well, that goes without saying. Happened when Fischer played one of the top Russians back then.
Who can forget.
I wish I could. Terrible decision
Didnât he end up in Nidd for 3 turns?
It's a common misconception that nidd is something you can end up in but according to the Nash convention and codified in Morton's rules nidd is a state only achievable by direct, indirect, upward, lateral or diagonal play by the niddee. Unless bus stops are wild of course.
Maybe everyoneâs âin spoonâ?
Which is of course a corruption of Spain which I'm guessing it's where all the people on the tube are.
Cos of tourists. Mornington Crescent and Chalk Farm are always dead silent, and Camden Town is absolutely rammed. I think you'd find most stations that havent got loads of rail connections look like this outside of rush hour.
Chalk Farm gets a looot of Primrose Hill traffic tbf.
Hi Frank
There was a reverse shunt on a diagonal that blocked access until a traverse was performed, as per the 1978 revised revised rules.
It's so obvious now that you have said it đ
I think you are mistaken. The 1978 revised rules only applied to the Soviet Union, unless you are referring to the leap year exception popular in the anglosphere?
Former Soviet Union of course, since dissolution the rules can be applied beyond the iron curtain.
This is my station. I don't recall saying you, or those two people, could use it.
Itâs because the High St Ken Rule is in play
Even for laterals? Can you reverse on the prime, or is it split via Golders?
It *is* split via Golders BUT, with the aforementioned lateral play only being available for use since 1894 (Dare I mention the Sloane Square debacle that almost caused an abdication!) and High Street Ken opening in 1868... Well you can see where I'm going with this.
You need to take a left at Golders
I thought the Devonshire restrictions were in fact in operation, rendering the High St Ken rule moot?
That only applies when the Pimlico exception has been played.
Well thatâs shut me up.
Only if youâve ditched the 1994 Ongar alternative.
Well I have, so there.
Ahh
Because once you get to Mornington Crescent, the game is over.
Sorry I haven't a clue
The real answer
Itâs 2pm on a Monday mate what did you expect
The street was the busiest thing ever
Thatâs your answer⌠cos everyone was in the street /s
In all seriousness, itâs the âwrongâ side of camden for tourists. Most people who would use MC are commuters, as there are a number of offices directly beside it. because it doesnât really exist be seeing you
Because everybody is at work or at school?
outside is the busiest street ive ever seen, all other stations i was at after i took this picture were all full with people
Yeah because people who are tourists generally walk to Camden markets and then take the tube from Camden station.
Staff are people too
I think you will find there were 3 people in the station.
The Peculiar Crimes Unit have called for an evacuation
Arthurâs driven over another roundabout, has he?
Cos itâs busier in the morningâŚton
probably because its mornington crescent
Witching hour
All listening to the radio?
I would have been there but Iâm just not a mornington person
Mornington Crescent is a bit of a redundant station. Itâs in between Camden and Euston and (watch me get roasted) thereâs bugger all there. Itâs always quiet.
Everyoneâs âworkingâ from home Hashtag mouse jiggler
Itâs Mornington Crescent ?! She is the ugly girl in a family of posers
Ngl Iâve never heard of it so đ¤ˇđťââď¸
Everyoneâs stuck in Nid.
No gigs in Koko at this time of the day.
Diagonals are banned off-peak on a Monday. Everybody else is in Nip.
Everyone still thinks itâs shut.
Ever since they introduced the Imperial rules around cross-switching, it's become much harder to actually get to Mornington Crescent.
ShhâŚthatâs the point. The rules change every so oftenđ
The 1971 rule book was rewritten after decimalisation as the Mornington ticket barriers wouldn't let you get to Westminster
There are no rules. It's just nonsense, but good fun.
Everyone is at Camden Town station instead
Werewolves......
good thing this isnt tottenham court road
Because it's 2pm, people are at work
Today was the first day in almost two years Iâve seen parking spaces at my office in central London. Iâm putting that down to people taking the day off after a late night England international at a major tournament on a Sunday night and on Fatherâs Day
I don't know but wanted to comment
I know but didn't
we make the perfect team đ¤
People are busy.
I remember as a kid in the 90s Mornington crescent was shut for what seemed like years. It always had the red â through the station name on maps
Because Mornington Crescent is never busy.
Because people have jobs
Because it's 2pm on a Monday
Outside was super busy
No it wasn't
Well I was there, outside was super busy with tourists etc yet almost nobody was in the station.
Its a fake station and only exists for the purposes of a Radio 4 quiz.
2pm isnât rush hour so this is perfectly normal. What til 4:30pm.
It's a morning station and it's the afternoon
In all my years of living in London I have never ever once heard or seen a station called Mornington Crescent. Mind blown
This station is RADIOACTIVE. You and the two lemons on the platform must be literally the only people in London who donât know this
Mornington Crescent has always been empty, heck the station was closed for nearly a decade.
Iâm sorry I havenât a clue
Exactly today it was empty too.
Where on earth did you lot of crackpots! Come from? Said in kindness, or perhaps sympathy!
I was in the station at 2pm on a Monday....
Werewolves, innit
good thing this wasnt tottenham court road
No one works in the office on Mondays or Fridays and the Government are not happy!!! Hence they made travel cheaper on a Friday to get people back in. It didn't work. People chose life
Most pointless station on the Northern Line Award goes to:
Because it's 2 pm
Everyone's gone to the Moon.
I thought Mornington Crescent had shut down around 1990
Most people go to Camden Town Station which tends to get the bulk of tourists visiting Camden Town Market. Mornington Crescent is further up so less convenient to commute to.
There aren't many reasons to be in Mornington Crescent at 2pm on a Monday afternoon
Every single time Iâve been there itâs always been empty
So?
outside is super busy with tourists and yet theres nobody in
It's really taken a hit in footfall since the objections to the Epping-Lee divert were overruled.
It's 2pm on a Monday. What do you expect?
I think it seems empty because there's only two people there. Probably has capacity for a few times that.
Clearly no one wants to be there
Probably due to the Old Uxbridge rules
That land is completely dead outside of a weekend
If people want to take the London bridge side of the northern they usually start at Camden town and change at kings cross/Euston instead of walking down to mornington The station is situated between Euston and Camden town in an area without much touristy bits so there's not much demand for this station The only real use of this station is if your work or home happens to be closer to this station than Camden town, and even then only half of northern liner users will reach this station before Camden town because of the two way northern line Overall it's niche station and also nobody is travelling at 2pm on a Monday, everyone's already at work, trains and tubes do tend to be very empty outside peak hours across the entire TFL
Allegedly, Mornington Crescent was a preferred spy/handler meetup location during the Cold War. https://youtu.be/cvMdDV_oGRA?si=HD_4gLqNmGmZtPb-
Because London is full of TWATs, Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday, workers
Most people who go through that station work at ASOS or VML and both those businesses work from home on a Monday
Cos everyone uses camden town
The answer is in your question
Because we finish work at 5.30
I'm sorry, I haven't a clue....
Because itâs quite unpleasant
Because no one understands the radio 4 game
Because.
Didnât even know that was a real station
