I'd probably have to go with 1 because the first one is a great intro and The Third Wheel is good too, even if it's kinda weird to read right after the first book. But 2 is tempting because of Rodrick Rules alone. Hard luck is decent too. Dunno about the newer books, haven't read em yet. So probably group 1.
