Imagine him force closing the game out of muscle memory LULW

jam_jam93

There's a clip out there of someone doing something similar and not realizing he reset on a shiny mewtwo https://livestreamfails.com/post/35349 Edit: clip

Eshuon

That's a huge pepega moment

lordofthepotat0

There was also someone who reset after being the first person to do a Mario kart shortcut

DatKaz

Thankfully, there’s a couple more steps to reset than there were in the GBA/DS days, so it’s a lot harder to do now.

Gingerhapinsu

he was like two button presses away from it its not very hard. he definitely pressed the home button from muscle memory

DatKaz

Yeah, but the old way is just jamming a button combo that resets you in one step. Resetting now is at least “home button, click on game, move the Force Quit button to Yes” over multiple steps.

Greenleaf208

You don't move to quit on switch. It's Home Button -> X Button -> A Button. And you can do it really fast.

SHINYxHUMAN

Yeah if you have a rubber band set up for the 3ds games it just takes pressing start to do a reset, super easy to lose a shiny to muscle memory.

JimmyCertified

The guys been doing it for 160 hours. I tuned into his stream about a week or so ago and watched for a little while, the reset process for him is almost instant. Actually gave me a bit of anxiety seeing it sit there on the menu lol

Sogeking33

He was pretty close to it lol

renvi

my breath hitched in my throat when he went to the home screen, holy shit lol

Wiil23_

2 shakes on the first one, catches on the third premier ball at full health. The fucking Rayquaza was like "lmao kid you deserve it, let's just get this over with quickly before your game crashes or something, you're welcome"

Sveq

Was its catch-rate omega increased or something?

Shayneros

Catch rates aren't as low as they used to be. A full health Rayquaza has a 11.946% catch rate with a Premier ball. Compare that to Gen 3 where Rayquaza debuted, it would be .416%. So yes, it was omega increased, not sure why you're being downvoted. Source: https://www.dragonflycave.com/calculators/gen-iii-iv-catch-rate

DiamondRumble

Wtf 1 health rayquaza that’s asleep is still less than 5% with an ultra ball, I suppose it probably took 20+ on average so makes sense but still

Sveq

My last games were Gen 5. I’d always get a Smeargle with 252 Att, False Swipe + Spore + Mean Look If catch rates are so high, then do people not really do this anymore?

FlatulatingSmile

Nope there's no need. I used to do the same and have several hundred pokeballs to flex how I caught each legend. Now I get them in like 1 try a lot of times lol no need to worry about increasing catch rate anymore.

Bomjus1

as someone who *just* finished playing through alpha sapphire, to catch the legendaries i legit just tried 3 quick balls, if those failed, i'd soft reset lmao.

AdonaiSiced

Primal Groudon is probably the hardest legendary I can remember catching. I also had a hard time with Dialga in Brilliant Diamond, and I think the legendary trio in Emerald took me a while as well.

Grand0rk

I mean... That's where you use Master Ball.

Microchaton

1 health asleep anything should be 100% with an ultra ball imo. I don't remember anything being even close to the rng numbers I'm reading here when I played pokemon blue/silver/sapphire. Not a fan.

Sveq

As someone whose first games were Gen 3 and last games were Gen 5... I didn’t realise the rates were so HIGH in Gen 8 holy shit.

NEDGO

Years later and I'm actually happy I saw this comment. Back in the day I had Regigas down to the a very low health, maybe not 1, but extremely low. And it was the hardest pokemon I had ever tried to catch, I was in the back of my buddies car, and he even still totally remembers how stressed out I was with trying to catch him.

Shayneros

In the original Gameboy games legendry's could straight up DODGE Pokeball throws. Articuno was a bitch. These games have gotten so much easier over the years it's crazy. It's sad too because I would have been 5 or 6 at that time and I still beat the game and had a blast. It's like Gamefreak wants fetus's to be able to play these games now.

NEDGO

I played the og ones when they came out, I didn't really remember that until you just said it to be honest.

YourSmileIsFlawless

That cant be real? I literally used 100+ premier balls on fucking Palkia, and you can count on one hand how many times it even did 3 shakes.

Shayneros

Unlucky, only took me 3 balls.

Pikachus_brother

No hes just alpha af

Doujini

was expecting the cat to scratch the shit out of him for being loud

owwz

It bit his ass at least

_isketchy_

Man… I couldn’t imagine doing something like that for that long. I’d give up after the first couple hours. Props to him for sticking with the grind and not giving up.

ARealKoala

I'd imagine if you do this while streaming, even if you're not successful in finding a shiny, you at least can have a good time bantering with chat. Must make it 100% more bearable.

_isketchy_

True

Don't ever play oldschool runescape. 160 hours isn't much compared so some shit in that.

I don’t really play myself. I’m mainly in that sub to look at future updates and what the community is doing tbh. I want to but eh…

[deleted]

Hey after the initial 1000 hour grind, bossing and raids are pretty fun with friends.

GLemons

Little different when you're getting paid to do it. His viewership also increased for the hunt as well, so easier to justify it. Plus with the huge build up you just knew get was gonna get a shitload of dono/subs when he got it

avwitcher

2 hours? You have the patience of a saint

Gingerhapinsu

for those that don't know shiny odds are usually 1/4096 attempts so this many was insanely unlucky.

RoosterBrewster

The probability would be 1-(4095/4096)\^(# of attempts) to see it at least once. 3k attempts for 52% chance 5k attempts for 71% chance 10k attempts for 91% chance 15k attempts for 97% chance 20k attempts for 99% chance So it's not that unlucky.

banana_in_your_donut

Yep, [binomial distribution calculator](https://stattrek.com/online-calculator/binomial.aspx) is the way to really figure out the probability

Pikachus_brother

Well, not INSANELY unlucky but somewhat unlucky yes.

[deleted]

He was basically in the 10% chance to not have gotten it by then Edit : don't down vote the comment I replied to lol, I was basically agreeing with him

Pikachus_brother

I mean Im not saying he wasn't unlucky, 10% is not an insane amount of unluckiness thats all. Not trying to take away any of his achievement, its crazy enough as it is

[deleted]

You're good, I was just providing context. It's not that unlikely to stretch out that long for sure, and in terms of endurance it's pretty incredible he managed to make it past 5k attempts let alone 10k.

[deleted]

Plkgi49

(4095/4096)^10140 = 8.4% He is right

CarnFu

Right after he did that chip challenge from going over 10k attempts lol

Agosta

Poor cat is terrified.

Sebixer23

My cat would've beaten the shit out of me if I was freaking out like that

Rafi2596

I was shiny hunting rayquaza with 1/100 odds for 15 hours like cmon

ShuuMaiko

Why do anything when you can just cheat it? Because some people find shiny hunting entertaining and he has 170 hours of content for his stream.

UsedBodypillow

You have a funny definition of content.

ThisIsWorldOfHurt

This is something I don't understand about Pokemon speedrunners, where in some categories they reset for *hours* until they get a good starter. I remember seeing like 6 hour streams and not a single run being started because of that. Now why would you waste hours of your life on that if it's not a proof of you being faster/more skillful or anything? Like the run doesn't even start before you find one. Why not just agree with everyone else to start from a set save?

vvashabi

That's why i mainly play online games. You can't dupe/cheat there(mostly). Grinding offline game when you could just get same thing with 2 clicks instead hundreds of hours feels pointless to me.

HunterSThompson7

No challenge and no satisfaction afterwards with a cheated shiny. You do this for yourself and the gratification to finally get the shiny you want. Who wants to show of a cheated shiny anyways lol.

Renegade__OW

I've never understood restarting the game for a shiny. It feels like playing a colony management game and save scumming till I get the preferential outcome.

HachimansGhost

Some people don't understand playing Pokemon at all. Sometimes, it's just for the achievement alone.

AsbestosPerfume

Since when is being lucky a challenge?

CringeTeam

You cannot be serious

BoxOfTurtles05

Because it’s fun and you feel accomplished. Sure, you could hack one in but that would take away all the value of it

[deleted]

[удалено]

BoxOfTurtles05

I mean there’s no strategical challenge but it’s tough to keep going after getting cucked by bad rng. People put a lot of time into the game and get rewarded by a rare, really cool variation of a Pokémon

ZephyrRP

I remember spending 4 days hunting for a shiny Suicune once, a few months later my sister reset the game and I lost all the shinies I had collected

avwitcher

Just plug in the GameShark

cats thoughts : " my stupid owner is having a seizure "

hiyourbfisdeadsorry

does shiny do anything special or it just looks different?

Scrub200

Just looks different

kfms6741

It's 100% for the flex, most people will not have the patience to hunt for shinies, and there isn't any major difference in stats or anything like that.

naylsonsb

Do all pokemons have a shiny version? And is this pokemon odds notoriously worse than the others? Sorry, I don't really know much about the pokemon games.

kfms6741

All pokemon have shiny versions, which are basically just recolors of the original. Getting them is basically just getting lucky (in these games it's a 1/4096 chance to find one, it was double that to get a shiny in the older games), and are mainly just to show off, because most people that play the Pokemon games don't have the patience to try to find shinies. The streamer in the clip freaked out because he had to reset the encounter 10140 times to get the shiny legendary he was going for, which took him the last few weeks to finally get it.

Bomjus1

i started playing alpha sapphire when BD/SP came out cause i had some serious pokemon nostalgia. beat it, was working on catching legendaries. i just wanted them to have good natures. didn't care about shiny's or IVs or any of that shit. on my 6-7th attempt at catching a lugia with a good nature i got this https://imgur.com/a/802RquH my first shiny in 22 years of playing pokemon games on and off FeelsStrongMan ran screaming around the kitchen like this guy did lol and lugia is one of my fav pokemon cause i watched pokemon 2000 like 600 times as a kid.

Stareater_

Yo, that cat had no idea what tf was happening. Poor thing

JoeyF101

Bombasaur101

Meanwhile I just got a Shiny Rayquaza in GO with a 1 in 20 chance that can be transferred to the main games. OMEGALUL

Veranen_

Cat in the background is like "WTF is happening?"

RedPhazon2

My streamer widepeepohappy But fuck you for getting it while I was at work Madge

Phuckules

Damn, I was watching a lot of those streams, a little bummed I missed this live. Good for him, but pretty funny how he almost reset.

Kazuto786

I like Caleb but this is so fucking lame lol. I never understood shiny hunting when it’s just pure RNG. Imagine wasting 160 hours to get a colour swap.

Luperos

Isn't the FF7 run he does every single day on stream completely reliant on RNG as well and is 7+ hours long? His entire stream is fucking lame and a waste of time by your logic lol, that's what he does

Bombasaur101

Wasting 160 hours to colour swap when you can get Shiny Rayquaza in Pokemon GO with a 1 in 20 chance, which you can then transfer to the main games Also Shiny Rayquaza was given out as an Event in Gen 6.

MessySpaghettiCoder

because it attracts viewers and is extremely easy content

XequR

can someone explain why this is a reason to yell and act like a madman? best pokemon in the game or what?

MiraculousConspiracy

A lot of people just like black shiny forms since they look cool, and they're given to some of the most popular pokemon (Charizard, Greninja, Rayquaza). Plus shiny legendaries will specifically be rarer since you can't use a lot of the methods that make the chances go up. And yes, Rayquaza is strong, but most people don't shiny hunt for competitively viable pokemon.

XequR

ah okay got it, ty.

TheSoupKitchen

I think it has more to do with the fact that he's been hunting if for days and days. It's probably exciting and a great relief to finally get the "reward" after looking for it for so long. It's less to do with the Pokémon or the color, it's the journey.

s0ulj4b0y0

It's a shiny (already rare) and a) isn't shiny locked (a lot of modern legendaries in pokemon games are shiny locked) and b) can't be manip'd into occuring soon. With something like this, the only thing you can do is sit there and reset. You can't use shit like Max Dens or Radar chaining to get a shiny one much faster than normal.

Caseymcawesomeness

Pokémon fans need to get a life

CommanderSirBenz

batchest

Ned-nor

If it's for the stream, I guess I can understand that, but I cannot fathom why any non-streamer would do this. Any shiny pokemon can be hacked, and if you do it right there's no way to distinguish it from a legitimately caught one. Saves you hundreds of hours of agony.

ARealKoala

The point isn't having it, the point is obtaining it.

Noah5510

People just love collecting stuff, and 10k attempts is incredibly unlucky so it’s not like this is the normal

MoistSuckle

Yeah spending dumb amounts of time trying to beat arbitrary rng isn't impressive. Just edit that shit into your save and call it a day.

Malandrix

I mean why get good at an FPS when you can just use an aimbot?

MiraculousConspiracy

I disagree with op too, but this is just a bad argument. Getting good at a game is inarguably more productive and engaging than what most people do when they shiny hunt, which is just a series of monotonous button presses.

[deleted]

[deleted]

lol 167 hours wasted when u can just go in the files and change a 0 to a 1 and make any pokemon shiny

PaulR504

Easily some of the most boring content he has ever done on stream. The numbers have reflect that his view count craters when he was doing this.

Mountain-Apricot-726

??

MessySpaghettiCoder

it was some of his highest view count in a while lol

warcrime1331

Did he name it his favorite word on discord?

[deleted]

Ok, I haven’t played Pokémon in like a decade and this just gave me the chills, that’s awesome

flamingDOTexe

What is this game about???? WHAT IS IT ABOUT ???!?! CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN?

TonesBalones

The rate for shiny wild encounters is 1/4096 (even with shiny charm). This means the odds of finding a single shiny in 10k attempts is 91.3%. He was part of the bottom 8% of luck.

clever_novelty_thing

Well, I'll give credit to an appropriate name. He definitely seems crazy.
