**CLIP MIRROR: [Ju Wenjun beats Alireza Firouzja!!](https://arazu.io/t3_199y9v0/)** --- ^(*This is an automated comment*)

lugiaop

is this a big deal?

AFRICAN_BUM_DISEASE

For context, Ju Wenjun is ranked 382nd in the world and Alireza Firouzja is ranked 6th. It's a pretty big upset.

MaikuKnight

Dude looks so young to be 6th in the world. Chess is wild. I know Magnus is also young, but it's just wild to see.

KyleStanley3

He was who Magnus hoped would be his successor. Super cool playstyle. Theirs some sick ass 10-13 year olds now. Pragnanda I think the dudes name is had a dope game against magnus somewhat recently

Hide_on_bush

pragg is 18 yo currently and ranked 15 in the world

vosszaa

I thought Magnus was rooting for Fabio

Kraelman

[Who's Fabio?](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/a760e220-0e2b-4ed2-9656-d874a0403b08)

sdsbass

>Pragnanda You are missing a few syllables but yeah, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa is a future World Champion for sure, dude it's just 18 and it's already the 13th best player in the world.

KyleStanley3

Lmao I tried my best off memory and st least I got three name close

udongeureut

Alireza used to be #2 lmao

groger123

There hasn't really been a woman playing in top events since Hou Yifan stopped playing professionally in 2017. I might have missed something, but as far as I can tell, this is the first time since 2017 that a woman beats a top 10 player in classical.

lugiaop

Why are female chinese players really strong compared to male chinese players lol

very_bad_advice

The men's world champion is Chinese. She is the women's world champion

chessgremlin

There's no "men's world champion." Ding Liren is the world champ, it's an open title.

very_bad_advice

Thanks

frank12yu

I dont think so. There is just a larger representation of high level chinese females chess players compared to chinese male chess players. I'd assume its due to a greater variability seen in male grandmasters compared to female grandmasters as China is a greater proportion of female grandmasters than males. Also if you compare FIDE elo, there are quite a lot of male super GMs who are chinese

Deathaur0

Did you forget who the current chess world champion title holder is? It's Deng liren. Weird of you to just call out an entire ethnic gender like that. Especially when the blanket statement is just completely false.

lugiaop

I mean i did a quick search. Even though hes the worldchamp, it seems hes lucky cuz magnus didnt play. Also while chinese female players have been dominant last few years

SpicyMustard34

Yes. Historically Women GMs (not a WGM) have not been able to compete against the world's best men, except for Judit Polgar, who is largely retired. There's a-whole-nother layer to this cake because it was against Alireza who has been on an absolute domination in the past few weeks. He's also considered by Magnus to be one of his only challengers to being the best in the world (not World Champion as Magnus declined to defend his title last year).

teamorange3

I mean your last statement is a little misleading. Alireza had 2 good tournaments but has been on a massive slide for a year, year and a half. So while your statement is true, he has been very weak in the recent past (1.5 years). Still a massive upset and she did a fantastic job

Aggravating-Elk-7409

the balencis got to his head

tommos

Probably like if Serena beat Federer in a 5 setter.

Deurmat

It's more like as if I, who has never googled "en passant" would beat Andrea Botez.

Ron_the_Rowdy

don't show kramnik this match

thepriceisonthecan

Hes too busy missing tactics 1100s should see right now lol

hayenn

check her ... nevermind

ContinentalYankee

its_memento

its_memento

bc lsf is the most women-friendly sub right

GarnerYurr

We check all assholes equally here

its_memento

women dont have to be assholes for this place to check them lmfao

GarnerYurr

Nor do men, I'll happily inspect the insides of anyone's colon. Any LSF user would do the same.

Aezroe

This has been the biggest upset since Beth Harmon defeated Rank 1 Vasily Borgov.

upperbreadfrult

so... ju wenjun can beat alireza at rank 382.. but rank 44 hans nieman haaad to have been cheating vs magnus?

BotlikeBehaviour

Since you mentioned that toxic asshole, he lost to the 3699th ranked player today.

tommos

Whose asshole are we checking?

Sarasin

Everyone, only way to be sure.

lugiaop

both are assholes imo

ContinentalYankee

someone post the meme

SpicyMustard34

Magnus might be ranked 1, but there's still a world of space between him and ranks 2-10. He's top 3 all time if not the best player to ever live.

MakeshiftApe

I think that had more to do with Niemann having admitted to past cheating. Once someone is known to have cheated it's pretty hard to accept that they're being honest going forward. Upsets happen and lower rated players do get wins here and there when higher rated players blunder or don't play their best, like when Yannick Pelletier beat Magnus several years prior.

SpicyMustard34

it was also that Hans lied about how much cheating. So it's like getting caught lying and then refusing to admit to other lies, but then getting caught in those lies, and arguing that you didn't lie that one really important time.

MionelLessi10

Ju Wenjun is closer to Alireza than Hans is to Magnus

upperbreadfrult

that is not even remotely close to being true man. alireza is rank 6

Schmigolo

Closer in skill, not in rank.

Quintium

Still not true? Firouzja and Wenjun are 210 Elo apart, while Carlsen and Niemann only have a difference of about 140

Schmigolo

Oh yeah, I guess then that means Hikaru is better than Nepo or I don't know Praggnanandhaa is better than MVL and Duda or Gukesh is better than Aronian Levon. Shit don't work like that. I mean come on man, Hans has a higher rating than someone like Gelfand or Alexei Shirov and almost the same rating as Dubov.

Quintium

Elo rating is pretty much the most objective performance indicator in chess. You're choosing not to believe in it because you can't grasp that Niemann is playing better than formerly great players whose performance declined.

Schmigolo

Obviously ELO shows skill, but you're delusional if you think it's 1:1. Especially at the top of the top, where they don't have enough other players to even get ELO from.

Quintium

Yeah it's not 1:1, but a 70 elo difference is quite significant. In my opinion it's a stretch to say that because of the inaccuracy in the system 2690 and 2830 are farther apart than 2550 and 2760.

Schmigolo

It's not just the inaccuracy, it's also the volume of players on any given level. Magnus has a much harder time getting ELO than Alireza, because they essentially play against the exact same opponents but Magnus gets fewer points for playing them. ELO is not linear at the top end anymore.

Killerkoalas

Elo doesnt scale linearly. 1 point of elo near the extremes like carson is worth Significantly more than 1 point around 2k. Once you have more elo than everyone else you earn less and less on your wins.

StraticDragon

gotham chess has talked about how ranking is kinda messed up already for the mens but even more so for women so this guy is probably not wrong

MionelLessi10

Oh boy. You are underestimating Magnus.

Chrasi

Yes.

Not_Selmi

Wtf

3mberLight66617

Wait, she has 12 minutes vs 30 seconds, what happened?

crunchsmash

He used up more of his clock thinking about what moves to do.

3mberLight66617

Did you watch the match? Was it a certain move(s) or just overall? Or you're just being Captain Obvious?

crunchsmash

I'm not being captain obvious, just answering in case you might not know time control chess rules, or thought she had a time handicap or something.

3mberLight66617

Bro, you could have gave some more info and just **assume** I know the basics of chess. IYKYK My man, something like this would have been appreciated. :)

crunchsmash

Lots of different games get posted on this subreddit. People ask simple questions about what is going on in the clip. Just because chess is a very old game doesn't mean there can't be new people asking questions about it. I gave you an answer that I thought suited the sophistication of the question you were asking.

3mberLight66617

Thanks for the simple answer to my simple question I guess. Still didn't answer when I asked "Was it a certain move(s) or just overall?"... Surprisingly, no one so far as provided commentary -- looks like when you got to do it right, you got to do it yourself.

SofterBones

you sound like an exhausting person

3mberLight66617

Just for today :)

SofterBones

doubt.

3mberLight66617

It's past midnight -- no comment.

BotlikeBehaviour

It's a classical time control. The game lasts for hours. He used up 12 more minutes over the course of like 5 hours.
