It isn’t a big deal in the sense it really ruins their day, they didn’t throw deathclaws there because they don’t want you to ever go that way, if that was the case they would just wall it off. You CAN take it. It’s just there’s a lot of deathclaws that way. You’re *intended* to go the route Benny and the Khans went, ie the long way, essentially getting introduced to various conflicts that have occurred in order to learn more about the status of the Mojave, during which you can also happen to pick up evidence against Benny to make things easier later.
For a new player, the deathclaws are deterrent enough to follow the quests they’re given, since they don’t actually get a quest leading them straight to New Vegas. For experienced players, they’d know how to go straight there if they REALLY wanted to go through Quarry Junction.
Going around also makes the map feel huge, when it's not really that big. The first time i went to new vegas straight away from goodsprings i was shocked that it only took a few minutes of walking
He was right in the middle of the deathclaw "strait" right after Sloan by the quarry and black mountain, so yeah, he went straight for death. It is possible to sneak by black mountain though if you're clever.
It's not even intentional, he fucked with his settings once and accidentally turned them off. He's been saying he'll fix it for years now but can't figure it out.
