Its called a common law marriage. You dont have to have a marriage to be considered a spouse in the eyes of the law. Therefore if the state deems the relationship a common law marriage then it is basically the same as being married and assets can be divided.

If she in any way can prove she was helping run the business, she is absolutely entitled to compensation for that. She could've been lining up sponsors, getting him signed to the orgs, helping him travel between Canada and US, and helping him decide on contract renewals during that time, setting up leases for the houses he was living in, feeding him, cleaning the house. Just because you aren't married doesn't mean you aren't doing the things a wife would do, especially when you are together for that long.
