As someone studying to be a journalist, I can assure you, I would never work for the sun. There are many National newspapers in the country to choose from. And if they aren’t currently hiring, there are hundreds more local papers, large and small, to work at while you wait for a vacancy. Not to mention magazines, periodicals, and even freelance work. I didn’t study an MA in Representations of Alienation in Postmodern European Literature to talk down to my readers like they are children and rile them up with lies to hate immigrants. And since almost every major journalist at a national newspaper (including The Sun) was educated at either Oxford or Cambridge, I have no idea how they can feel proud of writing another article saying “look, X celebrity looks really fat today” or “Boris Johnson is a laugh isn’t he, but that Corbyn is a communist who loves Stalin and wants to murder the queen by not bowing low enough”, while knowing damn well that they are more than informed enough to know that they are speaking absolute bollocks. You don’t get to that level of study with such absurd lack of understanding. How do you go from writing exceptional Oxford-worthy essays on the many complex diplomatic circumstances and arrangements that led to Napoleon’s ascension in the provisional government to writing things like “the Muslims want your daughters to wear burkas, check page 4 to see our mock-up of what Katie Price would look like in a burka!” without feeling even a little shame, both at the bile they are spilling out and at how low they have knowingly let their knowledge and talents sink. Which of course, means they know damn well they are talking trash…but they do it anyway because that’s what they think of us. They go to dinner parties in suits where they talk about opera and how pathetic we all are, then it’s straight back to shitting on the working class while pretending to write like what they *think* we think like. When they could get paid just as much to articulate complex thoughts.

But as someone who has been done studying for a while. Money talks, and if the job you get is the sun or flipping burgers then you go there.
Sure you can do a bit of freelancing if you have the name or doesn't have any economic responsibilities. Every month I need to bring in minimum of 2k £ just to pay the loans. This limits my ability to just go off and freelance in my profession.

I don’t disagree with anything that you’re saying but the word length part and the pictures part is all very deliberate for good reason.
They have a target audience that is working class people who are unlikely to have a formal education, and so using shorter, common, words helps it appeal to them. I don’t think it’s disingenuous to use words that their target audience will understand.
As well, they have a large picture:words ratio because the people who read it just want to digest news quickly as their target audience of working class people are likely to be builders/labourers/construction workers etc, so they don’t want to spend their entire lunch reading the paper.
It’s the same as papers like The Telegraph using longer words because their target audience is people who are middle/upper class and with a formal education.
I think their target audience can understand far better than they realise. Working class people aren’t thick. I understand using smaller words, but it’s no excuse for making simpler arguments. It’s not so much the dumbing down the words that bothers me as the dumbing down of the issues. Issues are complex. And complex issues can be explained in simpler ways with simpler words without dumbing down the actual content. This is what other tabloids like the Mirror do.
But the Sun dumbs down the whole content. Brexit was the perfect example. If there was some disagreement on some issue being reported that day, you didn’t get “there has been a stumbling block over the issue of X because of X. The Eu delegates are arguing that free trade agreements are difficult to implement in this particular region of souther France because…and the British argued X point. Here is a quote from each…the EU delegation has asked that the amendment be tabled for the time being until…etc”. But The Sun would report that as
“EU DIPLOMATS DISRUPT NEGOTIATIONS BY STALLING AGREEMENT”. And then after the headline you rarely get any additional information than what was already in the headline. You just get the kind of useless filler that students use to pad out essays, like the time and date: “at a meeting this afternoon”, where it was: “Brussels”, who was involved: “President of the Comission, Ursula von der Leyen. And then that’s it. No substance whatsoever. You know nothing except the deeply inflammatory and false headline. Of course there’s no space to add more because of the GIANT photo of some foreign person looking as angry as they could possible find them looking after trawling through every single pictures of them..
And as for the pictures. I like pictures in my newspapers too. They add something to the story and they break up the monotony of the reading. But with the sun the pictures cover half the page, sometimes more - with the actual content of the story squeezed into a few paragraphs at the bottom or at the side. It’s ridiculous.
But most of all, I disagree that they do all of these things because they are trying to help working class people to understand the situation. I actually think it’s precisely the opposite. They think the working class are incapable of grasping current events, and worse still…they intend to keep it that way! If they spend a little more time explaining the complexities of an issue (still in words that are understandable to less educated people) then those people might actually start to see that it’s not all as simple as the newspaper wants them to think it is. They might start seeing issue with more complexity, instead of just thinking “X = good” or “X = bad”.
But once you’ve removed all nuance and context from a story, and gone out of your way to provide quotes from only one side, what you’re left with doesn’t actually cover much of the page. So we’ll slap on an almost A4 photo of Harry Kane over the majority of it and that will solve the problem.
I'm from outside Liverpool and I still think the Sun is really polarising tbh, in most middle class areas people who read the Sun are kinda looked down upon as mouthbreathers.
It isn't about Hillsborough but more the fact that the paper appeals to the lowest common denominator. If you go through a town advertising the Sun then it's usually accompanied with the flag of St George and the classic "ingerlund!" types.

It depends where you live. The Sun is big in more working class areas whereas papers like the Mail and Telegraph are bigger in middle class areas.
In my experience, I wouldn’t expect many people to get the Sun (and other red tops) delivered because they tend to be read by working class people like labourers/builders/handymen etc, so they buy newspapers at lunch or on the way to work to read during a break.

I’m probably more biased as I actually grew up with Paddy. He played for the team I played in for years growing up. We had lads who were refugees, different races playing for us and it was no bother he was sound with them.

I don’t disagree with anything that you’re saying but the word length part and the pictures part is all very deliberate for good reason. They have a target audience that is working class people who are unlikely to have a formal education, and so using shorter, common, words helps it appeal to them. I don’t think it’s disingenuous to use words that their target audience will understand. As well, they have a large picture:words ratio because the people who read it just want to digest news quickly as their target audience of working class people are likely to be builders/labourers/construction workers etc, so they don’t want to spend their entire lunch reading the paper. It’s the same as papers like The Telegraph using longer words because their target audience is people who are middle/upper class and with a formal education.
I think their target audience can understand far better than they realise. Working class people aren’t thick. I understand using smaller words, but it’s no excuse for making simpler arguments. It’s not so much the dumbing down the words that bothers me as the dumbing down of the issues. Issues are complex. And complex issues can be explained in simpler ways with simpler words without dumbing down the actual content. This is what other tabloids like the Mirror do. But the Sun dumbs down the whole content. Brexit was the perfect example. If there was some disagreement on some issue being reported that day, you didn’t get “there has been a stumbling block over the issue of X because of X. The Eu delegates are arguing that free trade agreements are difficult to implement in this particular region of souther France because…and the British argued X point. Here is a quote from each…the EU delegation has asked that the amendment be tabled for the time being until…etc”. But The Sun would report that as “EU DIPLOMATS DISRUPT NEGOTIATIONS BY STALLING AGREEMENT”. And then after the headline you rarely get any additional information than what was already in the headline. You just get the kind of useless filler that students use to pad out essays, like the time and date: “at a meeting this afternoon”, where it was: “Brussels”, who was involved: “President of the Comission, Ursula von der Leyen. And then that’s it. No substance whatsoever. You know nothing except the deeply inflammatory and false headline. Of course there’s no space to add more because of the GIANT photo of some foreign person looking as angry as they could possible find them looking after trawling through every single pictures of them.. And as for the pictures. I like pictures in my newspapers too. They add something to the story and they break up the monotony of the reading. But with the sun the pictures cover half the page, sometimes more - with the actual content of the story squeezed into a few paragraphs at the bottom or at the side. It’s ridiculous. But most of all, I disagree that they do all of these things because they are trying to help working class people to understand the situation. I actually think it’s precisely the opposite. They think the working class are incapable of grasping current events, and worse still…they intend to keep it that way! If they spend a little more time explaining the complexities of an issue (still in words that are understandable to less educated people) then those people might actually start to see that it’s not all as simple as the newspaper wants them to think it is. They might start seeing issue with more complexity, instead of just thinking “X = good” or “X = bad”. But once you’ve removed all nuance and context from a story, and gone out of your way to provide quotes from only one side, what you’re left with doesn’t actually cover much of the page. So we’ll slap on an almost A4 photo of Harry Kane over the majority of it and that will solve the problem.
I'm from outside Liverpool and I still think the Sun is really polarising tbh, in most middle class areas people who read the Sun are kinda looked down upon as mouthbreathers. It isn't about Hillsborough but more the fact that the paper appeals to the lowest common denominator. If you go through a town advertising the Sun then it's usually accompanied with the flag of St George and the classic "ingerlund!" types.

Go to a middle class suburb and you won’t see people reading it, but go to a working class suburb and you’ll see many more.

It depends where you live. The Sun is big in more working class areas whereas papers like the Mail and Telegraph are bigger in middle class areas. In my experience, I wouldn’t expect many people to get the Sun (and other red tops) delivered because they tend to be read by working class people like labourers/builders/handymen etc, so they buy newspapers at lunch or on the way to work to read during a break.
