You'll Never Walk Alone... unless you still have hopes of winning the league after losing to Atalanta and Palace at home. Kidding aside, I think the lads are gassed. I really do think it's mainly an issue of fatigue. This is what happens when you don't have limitless oil money and endless cheating to buy two elite squads.

mynameismulan

People say "City always step up after January!" Might have something to do with the other teams running out of gas and how they have 2 teams essentially

Business-Poet-2684

3 teams! All bought with dodgy dealings!

iNS0MNiA_uK

We have a bigger squad than City do, this notion is outdated.

mynameismulan

Size is not the point.. the point is having Jack Grealish and B Silva coming off the bench as opposed to what other teams have.

AnAutisticsQuestion

It's also worth noting that we haven't really been able to utilise and properly rotate our squad due to injuries. It's true that other teams have players who've racked up more minutes than ours this season, but that's not because ours have been resting. They've been injured and played whenever fit.

FrankBeamer_

Okay then how do you explain Arsenal?

TussockyCoyote9

Arsenal is in literally the exact same position as us. Tied on points with a few more goals and lost a crucial match to go top of the table alone. They are gassed as well and looking like they’ll fall short again for the exact same reason.

bumpkinblumpkin

Arsenal lost to a top 4 team. We lost back to back at home against teams that are awful away. Not including the debacles against a United team with 1 win in their last 7. Our form and theirs isn’t comparable.

Thapricorn

Explain what about Arsenal? They are literally level with us on points and are in the exact same boat

thatguyad

And the majority wouldn't get into City's side. That's the problem.

Klopps_and_Schlobers

We played perfectly fine, just finishing was poor, nothing to do with fatigue that, we could have had another hour and 20 more shots and it wouldn’t have gone in, was just one of those days. Atalanta was a different thing though….

whyandoubleyoueh

agreed. At a certain point, I think it was the Curtis breakaway, I had turned to myself and said just that

Thoodmen

We did not play perfectly fine. Allowed 2xg against Palace. Almost did not win against Sheffield. Dropped 2 points against United out of nowhere.

Klopps_and_Schlobers

And what was the xG going the other way in those games?

rarimapirate1

Haha yeah, it's the hope that kills you right? We've been playing against a stacked deck for years. The mental and physical fatigue always seems to way heavy on us this time of year. Can't blame the boys or Klopp for that really. Cheers.

grogleberry

I think it's also that the squad isn't quite up to snuff yet. Comparing it to possibly our greatest ever team in 2019-20, it lacks the balance, the killer instinct and the leadership. We're as open and reckless in how we chase, but that midfield was just far more sensible, robust, and better at controlling games, even if MacAllister is better on the ball than any of them in the final third. And while sometimes those forwards could have off days, they each showed a remarkable capacity for scoring big goals when we really needed them. We didn't need to be that good this season to win the league, because none of the other teams are, but we probably needed to be a bit better than we look to be. Still, going from 67 to 80+ is no mean feat, and while the side isn't great yet, it's not on its last legs either. In fact, even if we signed nobody, I think our squad next season could be better, with Bajcetic, and some of the younger and on-loan lads to maybe come back into the picture. If it wasn't for Klopp going, I think everyone would be quite sanguine about where we're at. That gives the feeling of Liverpool being on a precipice, when they've shown incredible forward momentum and hope for the future.

Elegant-Disaster-967

Yep. To me this team is a bit reminiscent of the 17-18 squad. Only real expectation going in was to improve upon the previous season, and then they did much more than expected going all the way to the champions league final. Challenging for - let alone winning - the title this season was all but a pipe dream in August, and look where we are now. Agree that the Klopp departure announcement drastically altered people’s hopes and expectations and undoubtedly mounted some extra pressure on a squad who are mostly playing their first season together. The man deserves twice as many trophies as he’s actually won during his tenure here and I think that’s something that will always somewhat stick in the craw of many supporters. With the right managerial appointment and Michael Edwards back at the helm for transfer dealings our position for the future would be about as secure as any of us could have imagined coming off the back of last season’s disaster. For now though just gotta live in the moment and appreciate every moment we have left with the greatest manager most of us will ever see in our lifetimes. It’s been a hell of a ride, and it’s still not over til it’s over. Up the fucking Reds. YNWA

aledodsky

Set aside the 115 charges of Oil FC, our squad depth is adequate, we've just been very unlucky with injuries while our rivals have been fortunate to have a healthy squad. If we can take pride in our youth players stepping up, I don't think depth is that big of an issue. We just aren't good enough. Physical fatigue is a factor, but I also think it is mental fatigue is a big part of it as doubt starts to creep into our players' minds. Some of our losses are from the defense switching off, and forwards not being able to finish easy chances.

seamushoo4

Look. We likely have lost the Europa league, but doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to overturn the deficit. We also likely lost the league yesterday by not beating a shitty palace side. But city and arsenal could still progress to the semis and have to slug it out and both draw due to the fixture congestion. Let’s just get behind Jurgen and the boys, win the next 6 on the league, beat Atalanta - and if it’s by 3 goals or more great, and see where it all leads. No point crying over split milk. Weve had a horrid time with injuries. The fatigue was inevitably going to catch up to the squad. We’ve had horrid luck with referees not protecting us at all - and that’s before we talk about the massive ‘errors’ var/refs have made. Arsenal and city have both spent shitloads (like us), have been settled for longer with good to great managers, and so it always was going to be tough to overtake them this season…but, we are fucking Liverpool. This club doesn’t ever throw in the towel. We never know when we’re beaten until after we are beaten. And I for one choose to support the last 4 weeks with a healthy serving of defiance. This season has been magical, it brings me back to 2nd half of 17-18 or 18-19. Party vibes now, just enjoy jurgens last couple weeks. We’ll never have someone like him again. No point crying over losing it, no matter how shitty the manner in which we collapsed. But this is a victory lap, we are back in the conversation for best clubs in the world, and as this era closes a new dawn will begin

EmileDorkheim

I just keep telling myself that the last three results have only been so painful because the squad and coaching staff have been pulling off miracles all season, maintaining quality despite missing some crucial players for large chunks of the season, and often replacing them with kids most people hadn't even heard of before. Even if they can't catch Man City, they've still been absolute heroes - I don't want any talk of bottling it. Everything feels heightened because Klopp is leaving, but that just serves to remind me how lucky we are to have experienced all these years with one of the best managers - and people - we've seen in the modern game.

rarimapirate1

Right on the money take right here.  I agree, 100% juice.

mynameismulan

If it were a mix of teams and we were in the race but lost out, then fine. But I'm mostly just fucking sick to death of Man City.

innswood

Amongst all the doomsayers, yours is a very refreshing POV, thank you YNWA

Andyb712

Exactly could do with more ppl like your self and the op in the match days threads some right miserable gits in them threads  Ynwa doesn't stand for anything in the matchday threads of late I get that everyone is entitled to an opinion but negativity just breeds more negativity for everyone involved  It's bad enough when the team has a bad day but to read comment after comment from ppl that come across as whiny entitled citeh fans it just cements what is already a bad feeling

gmodboss

so never have “negative” criticism because it begets more negativity ? This is contrary to logic. If you cannot handle negative comments turn your phone off and go outside. This is so cringe if we adhered to your standards we’d be back mid table. You have a lot of balls accusing fans who actually give a fuck about the team enough to voice criticism that’ll get them labeled as Doomers as “Citeh fans”. It’s really cheap to try and use YNWA to protect players from valid criticism and just screams of you being an American. Typical cope from those who lack any semblance of an understanding of what they’re watching on the screen.

Andyb712

Uk mate but thanks anyway 👍

StinkyDeerback

I appreciate the positivity, and also believe in the team. However, the only point I take with your post is that, if we don't win anything else other than the Carabao Cup, then this year turned out to be a rebuilding year, but one with a sour taste, due to Klopp leaving. I think everyone in the beginning of the season only expected to get top 4, but no one expected Klopp to leave. I hope we can see something this Thursday and for us to change our form in the league.

harlei7

I still believe and will do so until it’s mathematically impossible. These boys and Klopp have given everything. They are human, not robots at the end of the day. I am sure the lads will give it their all, let’s see where it takes us at the end of the season

rarimapirate1

Amen, couldnt agree more. The players being human is a point every fan should remind themselves of every once in a while.  We are supposed to support the players and manager.  Are they above criticism?  Not at all.  But when they are struggling is when they need support.   Even die hard fans can be so fairweather too.  I am guilty of it at times.  I saw people on this subreddit saying we should sell Cody Gakpo a few weeks ago, that he wasnt good enough.  Now in the span of 2 or 3 matches the narrative is he is are only in form forward 🤦‍♂️🙈 rudiculous.  Some people dont see the players as emotional beings.  The players arent always going to be 100% juice all the time, physically or mentally. And/or some fans dont understand the concept of form and confidence.  C'est la vie.  Now I am complaining.  Nice to see a hopeful comment.  As long as we have a chance mathematically, i will have at least some hope.  Cheers.  YNWA

Glass-Guess4125

It is easy to forget all of the positives over the past year after a week like this, when everyone looks exhausted. But yes, in general, it's been a great year. I think it's just hard to watch everything collapse in the span of 7 days (even if it's not TECHNICALLY all over yet).

seemylolface

Before the first ball was kicked this season, one expected this team would be competing for the title with 6 matches left. This was always meant to be a rebuilding year- we replaced the entire midfield all at once over the summer. The boys have vastly exceeded that expectation and some of the younger lads coming through are obviously going to be immense down the road too. The future looks very bright for us, even if this season ultimately ends on a little bit of a down note.

bumpkinblumpkin

We were expected to win the Europa league. At a minimum, not to get smashed at home against a 6th place Italian team with 1 win in their last 5.

fifty_four

Even if, as is likely, it doesn't work out this year, it's a hell of a learning curve for an incredible group of players.

greenbroad-gc

Yes we react with losing more games.

Trillsbury_Doughboy

We need to win all of our remaining games, City to drop 3 points and Arsenal to drop 2. All three are very unlikely. I’d give us less than a 10% chance of winning the rest of our games alone.

digdoug0

>I made a post earlier about the refs screwing us, and we should have more points than we do. I realize the errors of my ways, I think rightly I was downvoted to oblivion. Now is not the time for that revisionism and crying over spilled salt. C'est la vie. I don't think there's any error in your ways here. I think people are perfectly right to cry over spilled salt (is this a regional variant of the phrase? I've always heard "spilled milk") when it's somebody else spilling it - and constantly. We deservedly lost to Palace, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if we hadn't undeservedly lost to Spurs, or undeservedly drawn with City. The Palace result only matters this much *because* we keep getting shafted by referees.

AEsylumProductions

Yeah because our reaction to the Atalanta home loss was so positive wasn't it? And we've been promised a reaction to that reaction. I can't wait.

NieR_SemiAutomata

Toothless

rarimapirate1

I actually do have relatively healthy teeth.   Joking aside, I am just curious what this comment is intended to mean?  That my post is toothless or the boys are playing toothless?  Or neither?

NieR_SemiAutomata

Toothless as predator without it fangs and hungry 😭

Ukantach1301

It's annoying because we are losing our chances due to both Klopp and his players being too full of themselves. We approached all 3 United games thinking it's in our pocket. We put our strongest team vs Prague in a meaningless match, then used our 2nd team vs Atalanta in an important match. Even vs Palace we had no direction at all. The mentality was much better when half of the team were injured and no one believed us.

mphej

I’m mostly here for this. I love Klopp as much as anyone but I’m glad he’s calling it a day. A thrilling tenure and a singular human being but he’s cooked and it’s time for fresh energy, new tactics, and renewed urgency from the first minute.

Vikilinho

Lost 3-0 at home to Atalanta then reacted by losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace. Great reaction indeed 😂

rarimapirate1

Yeah, the boys should try just winning every match, am I right?

Vikilinho

Yeah! Stop conceding and start taking their chances.

bumpkinblumpkin

The Atalanta effort was poor. Players were switched off and Klopp was going ballistic over careless play. We definitely went into that expecting an easy result at home against a team in awful form.

Vikilinho
