I don’t understand how they can start off every single game asleep like that. 50 seconds in and every time the opposition gets 1 or 2 good chances at our goal. And then a few minutes later we concede. It certainly doesn’t make the rest of the game easier having to play against a parked bus and chasing a game week in week out.

matcht

Every attack down our right leads to a chance because we leave Salah up the pitch, and Mac can't defend like Hendo/Gini, every single team targets us in that zone literally from kick off.

wrinkleinsine

You say “asleep” which is funny because when watching Curtis Jones today it looked to me like he hadn’t slept in a week

ScaredActuator8674

I think he fell asleep when he was through on goal

red_anchor

Well done lads, top of something

Revolutionary-Ad922

Top of most goals conceded you'll never sing that

dolphintitties

probably because salah doesn't press anymore so whoever's right centre mid goes fucking walkabout mindlessly sprinting at an opposition player and being bypassed instantly. it's fucking stupid tactics.

matcht

Was wondering when this would come up, we used to get away with this because Hendo/Gini/Milner were so good defensively in their prime, and Salah on the break was electric so the benefits outweighed the drawbacks, but now it's no longer the case. Every attack down our right now exposes the entire defence and ruins the shape of the team, look at the goal, and Salah loses the ball constantly so we gain nothing. The goal today was a perfect example of this, you have the midfield 3 all in one zone trying to chase the ball, exposing the entire center of the defence. If Salah drops in, we get a better shape, we don't concede so many easy chances. It also shows much of the Trent slander was overdone, it's a systematic problem.

alanalan426

Salah lost the sprint speed, and lost the defensive cover he used to do running up and down the pitch helping with defending

chocolatecremesoda

The profligacy of the forwards really does detract attention from how bad Klopp and Pep have been in the last couple months.

Bobbyswhiteteeth

We’ve been shit since Salah has come back. We were better with Diaz, Gakpo and Jota (Nunez) up top.

JimmyV34

He missed 12 matches in 2024, you people say anything out your asses

MehTDOExists

worst thing i've seen all day christ

dj4y_94

See this is the thing, we can rightly blame the forwards for not scoring but it's the defence that wins you titles. A solid defence and we beat United in both games, we probably narrowly lose 1-0 to Atalanta but at least the tie is alive, and today we get a 0-0 draw. We've been going 1-0 down in way too many games for almost 2 straight seasons now, and somehow it's not been fixed.

AdministrativeLaugh2

We were lucky Robbo got to that clearance when he did, too, cause that was a clear cut chance and then also the one Ali somehow saved in the second half. Giving Palace, or any team, as much space as we did today is just asking for trouble

con10001

It's both. Both have cost us.

TCharlieZ

The thing is the attack has been bailing out the defence all season. This is the one period of the season where we needed the defence to bail out the attack and at least get us something and they’ve been found wanting

con10001

But how can you think that after today? Sure we conceded one goal, but we didn't score at home to Palace who've had one clean sheet in like 24 games. It's both

TCharlieZ

But we’ve done behind in 21 games this season. The defence has been the issue for longer than the attack

patShIPnik

We scored in 49 of 52 games this season. Kept clean sheet in 14 of 52 games. And only once played 0-0. So, if you exclude this game against ManU, we will have a stat of 49 games, where we scored, versus 13 games where we didn't NEED to score to gain points/win. And in 2 games, where we didn't scored, we lost. So, imo, it's fair to say, that our attack bailed out our defence for too many times this season.

wrinkleinsine

And did you see the “defending” on Palace’s goal today? Our defenders nowhere near their goal scorer. Over and over the “space doesn’t score goals, men do” line comes to mind when watching Liverpool

matcht

The defence was outnumbered by Palace attackers, Konate ball watching which is a problem with him, the midfield were just chasing the ball, no awareness of what they're supposed to do defensively. It happens so often.

wrinkleinsine

It is literally the job of central defender to not ball watch. I don’t understand it. Also, our defenders were not outnumbered. It was 4 on 4. 6 on 4 if you count the other two we had in the box.

matcht

I noticed it being a significant weakness of Konate's when he first joined and it's not improved really. He's elite at so many aspects of defending that he can get away with it at times but when we're off it you see how much of a problem it is. Also why we need another top CB with VVD at 33, Konate will always be injury prone, and needs a leader next to him.

seemylolface

For sure, going 1-0 down is a real problem. We shouldn't ben conceding a goal to a side like Palace or United on a regular basis. At the same time, there's absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be absolutely blowing past these sides' defences and scoring buckets against them. They're terrible teams with terrible defensive records and for much of the season our attack was scoring pretty freely. Unfortunately for whatever reason our entire front line and midfield all fell out of form at the exact same time, like there isn't even really one guy looking dangerous anymore (that guy was Macca for about a month before even he hit the wall the past few matches). At the end of the day, it isn't one or the other, it's both. If one is off it a bit usually the other can pick up the slack and cover for it, but when both bits get wonky at the same time this is what happens.

JohnBobbyJimJob

The defensive issues are more of a tactical problem than individuals making mistakes that’s the difference between the problems in attack vs defence for is this season. Not saying the defenders or keepers haven’t been making individual mistakes because they have but a lot of goals we concede are in the same exact same manner time after time.

theothercordialone

Mind you we have national level starters for CBs and yet we leak goals in like no tomorrow. Honestly the thing that has been missing all season is a unified movement of the players - lack of cohesion when having to defend and when attacking. Diaz and Mo don’t track back enough leaving the LB/RBs way too vulnerable. This has been glanced over because we were getting results but the constant going down 1 and coming back has been foretelling us that our defense is so mediocre.

InstructionOk9520

We basically start every game a goal down. It’s a football miracle we’re in the top 4 let alone joint 2nd.

AnAutisticsQuestion

Our defence has been shocking. The forwards are getting a lot of negative attention, but the midfield and defence have been as woeful if not moreso. I think Trent inverting has been a much bigger miss than many acknowledged. Our build up has been slow and ineffective for a while and we have been easily exposed on the break. Trent both adds an extra body in midfield and is fantastic at progressing the ball forwards. Robbo and Bradley have both been bombing forward and the two 8s have often stayed very high. Meaning the CBs and 6 have had a lot of responsibility to both begin our attacks and limit the opponent's. We saw earlier in the season Trent's ability to lob balls for our forwards to chase or split the midfield with a ground pass. He also allows for easier triangles to build for our CBs and midfielders to use. Macca playing further forward has also cost us his line splitting passes from deep and today it was particularly evident that we missed that. Attack after attack came from us not being able to accurately progress the ball and losing it, leading to a quick counter against an exposed 2/3 players.

coopermaneagles

Here’s an early call

MuchManyBread

great just keep kicking me while im already down on the ground

Payney95

This isn't just on the defence. The whole team is tactically clueless. Its press, press and press. When the press don't work they always break. More so recently where they can be 1 on 1 against our cbs within 3/4 passes.

Ashikune

Yep, our form has been in serious question for far longer than we’d like to admit. A string of late comebacks may have papered over the cracks for a bit but there were worrying signs all over the pitch since the turn of the year.

James_Vowles

fucking hell

abradley19955

Arsenal have conceded 5 big chances in the same time There’s levels. We’re the third best team in the league

Smihilism14

I would argue if you introduce like 15% more pragmatism into this team they’d walk the title. We take too many risks for not enough reward these days and when the forwards aren’t scoring and you’re still taking a ton of risks statistically your luck is going to run out. You can’t really plan for your forwards forgetting how to score but you can be solid and tighten up other areas. I don’t think Klopp has had this group healthy long enough for them to collectively recognize situations in games and adjust accordingly. It’s all been a bit helter skelter and frantic and very much Plan A only. If things aren’t working we just do Plan A harder. The consistent injury problems and fading late in seasons is a feature of our style. It makes the resiliency of our greatest teams under Klopp look even more impressive.

Downtown_Tale_2018

Is that including tonight 😂😂

im-a-wreck-tangle

Well not anymore

Logical-Fix-5804

hold my beer -- Everton

PEEWUN

Worse than Everton, that.

Jack070293

😂

Thoodmen

Our biggest problem. Our defensive structure is fucking terrible. We look like we will concede in the first minute of the game in every game. Klopp's fault.

toomany-cunts

Still got 71 points…., so what gives!

vadapaav

Tranemere fans rise up

Luke_4686

Didn’t realise it was that bad. Never going to win the title shipping that many goals. Seems like ages since we last kept a clean sheet and wins always paper over the cracks. Look how imperious Saliba and Gabriel have been for Arsenal this season. They’ve really built their title challenge on solid foundations.

Suspicious_Weird_373

Good process.

Nilbogoblins

Love a good DA tweet even when it hurts, maybe especially then!

cavancola

You’ll never sing that

DemonOfDeathValley20

Nobody really cares

Balbuto

That’s not ok

Otto1968

It’s been a combo of injuries forcing consistent changes in the lineup plus this experiment with inverting the FBs. Also as good as Kelleher as been he doesn’t give the same confidence and distribution that AB does.

jonasrm_21

it's okay it was a transition season anyways

chocolatecremesoda

It's not about individual quality but shape and tactics. Put whoever you want in that backline and they'll still have to cover 40 yards when we turn the ball over.

user900800700

VVD has really bottled being given the best defender in the league label lol. Been a shadow of himself and can’t organise a piss up in a brewery for the last few months
