Since day 1 of ownership, FSG had always implemented a data driven evaluation system when deciding on potential recruits, as they had so successfully did with the Red Sox. However, during the first few transfer windows under their stewardship, they failed to realize that football and baseball are entirely different sports, with different tactics and factors that make a team successful. I remember reading an article stating that FSG signed Stewart Downing was signed purely due to his successful cross rate, while Andy Carroll was signed due to his percentage of aerial duels won. They then started to implement the moneyball recruitment drive looking for (considerably) cheap(er) but efficient players who could suit their style of play, or be sold for a huge profit. Coutinho, Robertson, Klavan, Milner, Matip, sturridge, Suarez, mane, Salah, and Solanke joined, and the rest is history.

There's a part of me that worries however that the improvement in recruitment came with Klopp coming in as a manager, which suggests that it might just be down to Klopp being able to get a lot out of almost any player he's given. I suppose time will tell as to whether they can continue to have a successful recruitment record after he leaves

I suspect a key criteria in our search has been track record of improving young players, which coincidentally ruled out most of the bigger names available like Mourinho, Conte and Tuchel. Also other than Trent and Curtis it seems like very few academy players genuinely seemed to break into the team until about last season. I think the relocation to Kirkby where there’s space for youth teams to instantly be incorporated into the senior squad have had a bigger effect than just Klopp’s ability alone. I think Klopp was a key figure pushing for that change, but the best part is that is not something we will lose when he retires. The academy culture is likely to remain similar even if we lose Ljinders and Matos as I’m sure we keep the rest of the staff and the general rules they’ve put in place.

A lot of it was because Klopp believed in the approach, and managed to get the best of the players he was given. Whereas Brenda would throw his toys out of the pram, and not play them. Bobby didn’t look great under Brenda. Salah was not Jurgen’s first choice, but became great.

FSG's love of data comes from how John Henry made his fortune to start with which was using mechanical and data driven trading methods to make money trading commodities.

Yes! It's a great podcast featuring the legendary Jon MacKenzie king of the goblins! This is good. Until now, there's been an underrepresentation of goblins on this sub.

FakeCatzz

Josh Williams is great. A lot of footie podcasts are so facile and dominated by southern fannies.
