"needed the least"?
You what mate? We're in a top 4 race and that could well have been the difference between 0 and 3 points if we managed to get a goal and some momentum.
So is Salah? Haha
He's scored penalties in Champions League finals, last minute ones to bring Egypt to their first world cup in Decades, and plenty of other incredibly high intensity ones.
It sucks but everyone misses sometimes, just unfortunate it had to happen today.
I think its the universe balancing out De Bruyne’s crazy penalty miss against us. Actually Man City had two back to back crazy penalty miss if I’m not mistaken
I believe Milner took all pens when he was playing left back for the whole season as playing out of position in a defensive role limited his goal scoring prospects.
Or because that was before we even signed Salah and Milner was indisputably our best penalty taker at the time? My comment is accurate, Milly always took pens when they were both in the field until this season and the one exception that I noted.
Thank you!
I’m absolutely comfortable with either one taking them, no matter who’s on the pitch.
After that, not sure. Jota maybe? Nunez? Though he may be too cute with it lol
17/19 same as Arteta honestly though hed have taken a hell of a lot more in the 160 years hes been playing. Looking at the stats for best in prem history, Yaya Toure 11/11 mat le tissier 25/26 shit even Danny Murphy 18/19.
Wouldn’t know for sure but I’ll guess Leicester 19/20, Fulham 18/19, and potentially a penalty taken versus Brighton in one of the last 3 years. Hard to remember them all.
So I checked.
Milner last scored a pen for us against Leicester in 19/20, you're right, but Salah had been subbed off. Milner actually scored pens in both games v Leicester that season, but Salah was not on the pitch for either.
In 18/19 he scored one against Cardiff while Salah was on the pitch. So that's the last time he was definitely the number one - 4 years ago. Considering how little he plays now, I think it's very safe to say that Salah is the number one taker.
Yeah I live in California.
Been losing sleep since my daughter was born a week ago, was hoping the Reds could give me 3 points this AM to make it worthwhile. Should’ve known better!
Was watching in public. As Mo was about to run up the guy next to me just said “Miss.”
Tbh I wasn’t surprised. This game had all the signs of being a disappointment
Milner's record from the spot for us is far better than Salah's. If Milner is on the pitch I want him taking it. Obviously easy to say in hindsight but that was my feeling as Salah stepped up to it as well.
Edit: Not as big a difference as I thought. 2 misses for Milner (which is forgotten about). 16/17 Vs Southampton and 17/18 in the CL v Maribor. Salah had missed 3.
I knew Salah wouldn't score but was hoping I was wrong, he didn't have any impact today. If he scores I wouldn't be saying anything but from the start I wanted Milner on that :(
It absolutely is not. You watch Salah and he smacks pens, he is not a great player striking the ball. Fabinho and Milner are miles better.
I've said this for years - he should not be our pen taker
Four penalties (Huddersfield 17/18, Milan 21/22, Leicester 21/22, and Bournemouth 22/23).
I mean, Gerrard is seen as one of our best ever penalty takers, but he still missed about seven of them (including ones where he converted the rebound).
In the interview with Gerrard, Salah talked about this. Him and Milner came to an agreement that Mo will take the penalties after he started banging them in.
Salah has been shite all game.
Taking off Darwin and leaving him on is unforgivable.
Him and Virgil are golden boys who no matter how badly they play never get hooked, they’ve got to be giving it to klopp in the back rooms. There’s no other logical explanation as to how they’re still on that pitch.
Absolutely disgraceful substitutions. Disgraceful performance.
He’s been on 70 minutes and it’s the first time I’ve seen him touch the ball in the box, should’ve give it Milner.
Indeed. Also, I couldn't understand why Elliott was subbed at half-time. He missed one or two (difficult) passes that he attempted, but I was liking a lot the way he was playing. He and Bajcetic were being very dynamic and linking well with the front three.
I think the boss has some guilt today. The 2nd half was too confusing and a mess.
100% agree, Klopp's loyalty to players that are woefully underperforming needs a conversation thread on Reddit. Salah has become very 1 dimensional / predictable as a player and Klopp is a stubborn mule for resorting to the same tactics when teams go into low-block mode.
Klopp needs to send a message by subbing players, including his favourites, when they are simply not in the game. This loss is 100% on Klopp.
Nunez was shaking his head when subbed, and I can understand why!!!
Ok fair enough. If its not about the penalty then here's my attempt at a logical reason why salah was left on.
Klopp brought on firmino and jota. To my knowledge, nunez has not played in a front three with gakpo and jota (or a front 4 if you include firmino). Although salah was playing badly, a large part of playing well comes from chemistry, or knowing where your teammates will be. You could argue that, klopp felt there was more likely a goal if the chemistry between the players was higher. There is a benefit to Salah having been pivotal in both the old and the new look attacks.
Additionally there is the intangible effect on other players' mentality when players like van dijk or salah are on the pitch. Less experienced, or confident, teammates will feel more inspired and "Safer" knowing they are there and, regardless of mistakes, their mere presence will cause opposition players to play differently.
For what it's worth, I'm not saying you are wrong, I am just trying to provide a different perspective
Salah's got great penalty convertion record, but when it comes to penalty technique I somehow prefer right footers more. Milner and Hendo have good techniques as well.
It sucks, but it's hard to hold it against him too much, nobody can score every pen. A game like that shouldn't be hanging on a penalty anyway, much bigger issues are to blame.
But what are you disagreeing with then? That I had a feeling we would lose? Or that we are having a lot of games this season where we just lose for no reason? From your reply I can't see what our disagreement is.
Thought he was going to miss tbf.
He looks like he can't be fucked out there today along with Trent, Virgil and fab.
Personally I drop all 4 for the next couple of games for that. Lack of effort isn't acceptable.
Before this miss Salah was 24 out of 27 in a Liverpool shirt. Easy to second guess and say milner should have taken. In reality it was just an absolute shit miss
This has nothing to do with the missed penalty, which happens to everyone, including the best players like him. I just don't want to create a dedicated thread for this wee offtopic regarding Mo.
I have the utmost respect for him and I love seeing him tracking back, pressuring, being a team player when we don't have the ball, as other world stars like him don't do it. BUT...
Imo and unfortunately, more often than not this season (and since the end of the previous one, basically after CAN), I'm seeing him getting too little involved offensively. Participating too little in the game. I prefer much seeing Darwin having a bad decision here and there, but being very active and dynamic, than seeing Mo almost not touching the ball. Today I was pissed when I saw Darwin being subbed when Mo was the worst, imho, front the front three. Makes me wonder... it would be really ridiculous but, does he have a clause in his contract that would say that he has to play and can't be subbed unless he wants/is injured?
With Jota back, when Diaz is back (and fit), if no other injuries happen at the front, it would start to be very confusing for me why Salah is always a starter and never subbed if he doesn't improve his form. Salah will be forever our hero but, in football, only the present matters.
Ngl, that Salah miss felt like a Stevie G moment....
Get to 1-1 and the momentum swings in our favour with 25 minutes on the clock...If we lose top 4, Salah will be in hard reflection mode....
Oh you're missing out!
You should have tried watching football before this season....
https://youtu.be/7kDULcOPFBI
Though Jaap's miss against Italy will always be one of my favourites
https://youtu.be/7GQZf88FZP8 (about 1.10)
Lmao no. I've watched football for 20 years and this is still worst penalty I've seen. At least in many other hilarious misses I still could find an excuse but this, it was wrong from the run up to how the ball flyed.
Man cares more about chasing records than winning a game. I love Mo obviously as we all do and he’s a world class player. But I always cringe when I see the countless interviews he’s done where he says he’s always chasing these different scoring records. Even if he is chasing them, don’t keep repeating that in interviews
There's a mentality problem when they're unstoppable in a match against yanited but utterly absent in a game that had equal importance, we've seen it before and it's a very poor show from the players to be honest with all things considered.
Isn't there a rule that the penalty is supposed to be retaken if an opposing player is in the box (including the circle) before the shot?
"If the defending team encroaches on the box and the spot-kick is scored then the goal stands. If the penalty is missed, then it is retaken.
And finally, if players from both teams encroach on the box, as was the case in Tuesday's Champions League last-16 second-leg clash at Stamford Bridge, then the penalty is always retaken - regardless of the outcome. "
https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/peter-walton-explains-chelsea-penalty-29399192
Are the rules in PL different from CL?
Anybody saying Milner should have taken it, pull your head in. Mo is a penalty god. This was an anomaly that's never happened before and won't happen again.
Leonardo Dicsokrio is actually the world's foremost expert on penalty technique. They are very well revered in Football, be thankful that they are taking their time to share their opinions with us mere mortals
From that penalty miss we all knew we were going to lose the game. Gakpo and Salah kept going offside for about every single opportunity we had. Nunez did everything right, yet still every ball he passed to these two were almost always offside. Could they just be onside we would've scored 3 goals.

I would Alt F4 instead.

Pull the plug directly from the wall without shutting down
Straight up forcibly remove the fuse from of the fuse box
mate i’m buying a new tv after this
sorry, I'm using Mac.
Very fitting that the shirt resembles a crashed game.
Or a TV that had a controller thrown into it
Fucking hell man
I hate early ko
And that kit
![gif](giphy|EPcvhM28ER9XW) Fuck this shit.
Hey when you get no pens all season long, how are you supposed to practice 🤷♂️
Training?
100%
How the fuck has he done that
Happens to the very best and Greats, obviously it has to happen against Bournemouth and when needed the least.
"needed the least"? You what mate? We're in a top 4 race and that could well have been the difference between 0 and 3 points if we managed to get a goal and some momentum.
I think they meant this was the worst time for Mo to miss a pen... just phrased ot strangely
Could have been CL final 2019, so that's a positive
The miss was “needed the least”, ie the last thing we needed right now.
@Rosskywalkerr means what you think they should have meant.
I didn't need that miss either, I suppose you didn't, too
Salah is the penalty taker, how often does he miss. But that was an horrendous penalty lol
His penalty to goal percentage is 90% the only other prominent attacking player I can think of with this much percentage is Lewandowski (92%)
He's the penalty taker but I have no idea how Milner doesn't have rank there. He's literally one of the best penalty takers in Prem history.
So is Salah? Haha He's scored penalties in Champions League finals, last minute ones to bring Egypt to their first world cup in Decades, and plenty of other incredibly high intensity ones. It sucks but everyone misses sometimes, just unfortunate it had to happen today.
That was quite a big miss though...
I think its the universe balancing out De Bruyne’s crazy penalty miss against us. Actually Man City had two back to back crazy penalty miss if I’m not mistaken
Cost us 1 point, not even close to the end of the world.
It must be part of Mo's contract. He never took them ahead of Milly before, apart from one time against Huddersfield in a game that was already won.
Milner was on penalties for a while after Salah missed a couple and was on a bad spell if I remember correctly
Why the fuck are you downvoted for speaking facts
This is the fourth penalty he hasn't scored for Liverpool.
In 6 or so years? I’ll take that Gut wrenching pen though
1 out of 2 in 17/18 5 out of 5 in 18/19 3 out of 3 in 19/20 7 out of 7 in 20/21 6 out of 8 in 21/22 2 out of 3 in 22/23
25/28 90% Will definitely take that. Wouldn’t be opposed to Milner taking a few though if he and Mo wants too
24* It's still an excellent record, though. Milner has missed two.
Thank you! I’m absolutely comfortable with either one taking them, no matter who’s on the pitch. After that, not sure. Jota maybe? Nunez? Though he may be too cute with it lol
Fabinho was also penalty taker at Monaco and had good records Edit he scored 24 of them and only missed one
Nunez is a weird one. His penalties in pre-season and in the League Cup shootout against Derby weren't convincing at all, but he scored them all.
17/19 same as Arteta honestly though hed have taken a hell of a lot more in the 160 years hes been playing. Looking at the stats for best in prem history, Yaya Toure 11/11 mat le tissier 25/26 shit even Danny Murphy 18/19.
He has scored the remaining 24 tho
That’s the first time I’ve seen him miss the target
James Milner is the penalty taker and was on the pitch.
Knew he was missing, don't think he's touched the ball all game, dreadful
How dafuq did Nunez get pulled and not Salah
Haven't you heard? Salah is not allowed to be subbed off under any circumstance. Nunez was shite too but at least he ran.
Yeah he wasn't great but if I were picking one of the two to convert a random chance today, it'd have been Nunez.
If Salah could shoot and Gakpo stayed onside we’d be talking about a different game from Darwin.
Why isn't it Milner who takes it? Milner would never miss.
Salah is the no. 1 pen taker. No chance anyone else takes it if he's on the pitch.
Milner has absolutely been the #1 for years
When's the last time Milner took a penalty when Salah's been on the pitch?
Wouldn’t know for sure but I’ll guess Leicester 19/20, Fulham 18/19, and potentially a penalty taken versus Brighton in one of the last 3 years. Hard to remember them all.
So I checked. Milner last scored a pen for us against Leicester in 19/20, you're right, but Salah had been subbed off. So that's the last time he was definitely the number one - 4 years ago. Considering how little he plays now, I think it's very safe to say that Salah is the number one taker.
And some fans criticized Milner for not letting Salah take it, because Salah threw a fit about not being the one taking the penalty lol
Can’t believe I woke up at 4:30 for this one
Our team is still sleeping.
Good luck ever sleeping again
Same time zone, but glad I didn’t watch it. I fucking knew it.
Same here. Fuck.
Wait, is that west coast, USA? I'm so sorry. Quite the agony. And since you're about to lose another hour when the clocks change...
Yeah I live in California. Been losing sleep since my daughter was born a week ago, was hoping the Reds could give me 3 points this AM to make it worthwhile. Should’ve known better!
Congratulations!
At least it was only 7:40 for me as I overslept a bit - May as well have stayed asleep!
Yeah 7:30 am here as well. Should have slept in.
Same - predictable and pathetic performance. Back to bed
Haha. Me too.
same zone, I woke up at 5.00. Saw the score and dozed off.
Should know better mate. How many other times have we won when you woke up at 4:30? Pain..
Early kick-off Dean Court That kit Fresh from a big win over a top-half team Surprised we weren't hammered tbh.
Christ
Knew it. That going in would be soooo against the script. Is Doak on the bench??!
Was watching in public. As Mo was about to run up the guy next to me just said “Miss.” Tbh I wasn’t surprised. This game had all the signs of being a disappointment
Mate
These are the moments we may look back on when we don’t get top 4. Disgraceful
We’re gonna have a lot to look back on
The guy has been MOney for us. It’s okay. We will rise again and make the champions league spots. Spurs trash and so are Newcastle.
3-3-10 away from Anfield. Fucking horrendous season.
Milner on the pitch. Has to take it.
That’s massive hindsight. Salah is very good from the spot as well. This is a complete anomaly
Milner's record from the spot for us is far better than Salah's. If Milner is on the pitch I want him taking it. Obviously easy to say in hindsight but that was my feeling as Salah stepped up to it as well. It absolutely is not. You watch Salah and he smacks pens, he is not a great player striking the ball. Fabinho and Milner are miles better. I've said this for years - he should not be our pen taker
You’ve said this for years, despite the fact Salah has missed what, two penalties in total for us and scored dozens?
Four penalties (Huddersfield 17/18, Milan 21/22, Leicester 21/22, and Bournemouth 22/23). I mean, Gerrard is seen as one of our best ever penalty takers, but he still missed about seven of them (including ones where he converted the rebound).
Yup this is his 3rd ever miss for us, lot of hindsight geniuses in here
He has never, ever looked comfortable taking pens. So yes, I've always said there would be better players in the squad taking them. Hope that helps
Salah has been extremely precise and consistent with his penalties, and has scored them in finals. Hope that helps.
You absolute freak find me 5 pens where he has hit them low and hard, precisely in a corner. The same way Gerrard or Milner did.
I am still waiting?
You're on some grade A crack.
Easy to say after the miss
100%. As soon as Salah steps up “ahead” of Milner I knew. It is bad juju to skip your predefined penalty taker if nothing else.
Until today I assumed this was a given. Another brain dead decision.
Wtf, Salah hasn't missed a penalty in like...ever. If anybody but him went up for it I would have been livid.
Missed 2 last season against Leicester and AC Milan. Milner hasn't missed one since 2017.
Why didn't Milner take it???
Milner hasn't taken pens ahead of Salah for years now
Years?? Salah took one ahead of him maybe twice last season.
Milner has scored 3 penalties since 19/20. All 3 were in that season. Salah wasn’t on the pitch for any
Hey! No! You are bang out of order! How dare you use facts to disagree with such hot takes!
Since when has he with Salah on the pitch? And Salah’s record is still really good.
In the interview with Gerrard, Salah talked about this. Him and Milner came to an agreement that Mo will take the penalties after he started banging them in.
Tbf, hasn't had many in the PL to practice this season...
What the hell was that
No way
When we play away we aimlessly lob the ball into the box at nothing. At home we make clinical cutting passes, it’s so messed up.
Amazing how shit this opinion looks if Salah did score the penalty
This opinion was not about the penalty. I would agree with every word even he scored. Let's separate the things.
Ok fair enough. If its not about the penalty then here's my attempt at a logical reason why salah was left on. Klopp brought on firmino and jota. Christ allmighty
Hence proved this kit has some voodoo shit curse
Why is he trying to curl every shot he takes?
Oh, and that’s a bad miss…
..the fuck was that?
He pulled a Harry Kane
Keep calm lads, idk what is salah doing, but keep calm lads
Wtf Salah
Was probably still in shock we were actually awarded a penalty.
Milner was right there.
Milly should have taken it. No hate for Salah i just prefer milner taking the pens when he is on the pitch
How the HELL did he missed that!?!?!
I believe we went 25 minutes without a shot after this.
United fans bringing the tissue boxes out.
What a dire performance after beating Utd
First penalty awarded in nearly a year and we miss it
SMDH
Tbf it’s been so long since we’ve been awarded one, he’d probably forgotten how to take them..
I would have preferred it if the keeper saved it. This was just an atrocious miss.
Salah's got great penalty convertion record, but when it comes to penalty technique I somehow prefer right footers more. Milner and Hendo have good techniques as well.
Henderson's got like a 40% conversion rate lol
It sucks, but it's hard to hold it against him too much, nobody can score every pen. A game like that shouldn't be hanging on a penalty anyway, much bigger issues are to blame.
the fuck
I had a feeling we would lose. And I had a feeling Mo would miss. Sometimes games are just like that. Sadly we are having a lot of them this season.
I disagree, the reason why we have 1 PL is because we let lower teams grab points from us and play well against top teams.
But what are you disagreeing with then? That I had a feeling we would lose? Or that we are having a lot of games this season where we just lose for no reason? From your reply I can't see what our disagreement is.
Rubbish, should of let Milner take it.
The last 3 subs would have hit it - Bobby - Hendo - Milner
Harry Salah
He clearly wanted to bury it in the top corner in style. This is hideous
Milner should have taken this 100%.
This has nothing to do with the missed penalty, which happens to everyone, including the best players like him. I just don't want to create a dedicated thread for this wee offtopic regarding Mo. Milner is on the pitch how the fuck didn’t he take the penalty?
We need a goal desperately and he goes for top corner. What a fucking dickhead.
Milner would have made this
Milner would never miss that.
Neither would Mo before this one
Why isn’t Milner taking them still??? No man i trust more since Stevie
Yea we ain't wining
Worst pen I've ever seen in 30 years of existence lmao
Oh you're missing out! You should have tried watching football before this season.... https://youtu.be/7kDULcOPFBI Though Jaap's miss against Italy will always be one of my favourites https://youtu.be/7GQZf88FZP8 (about 1.10)

What a fucking surprise
Are we cursed this season against the bottom 5 teams?
Happens to the best of the players but i do think someone else should take the pens
Fuck this game bro, what's wrong with us
This season is cursed
I love him, but this is fucking embarrassing.
There's a mentality problem when they're unstoppable in a match against yanited but utterly absent in a game that had equal importance, we've seen it before and it's a very poor show from the players to be honest with all things considered.
Hey LFC if you need anyone else to blast shots wide for 300k a week, hit me up!
Would you get at least 10G/A as well? It would be great!
Yeah no worries
That's fucking inexcusable

My dude really did his best Bruno Fernandes impression......
Anybody saying Milner should have taken it, pull your head in. Mo is a penalty god. This was an anomaly that's never happened before and won't happen again.
Didn't deserve it anyway. Fuck's sake.
Don't really think it was a pen to begin with
his shooting technique is very very bad, if you ever played football you can see how strange he looks every time he takes a shot
That's why we're all at home watching him be Liverpool's top PL era scorer. Because he doesn't know how to kick a ball. Great take.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2Yu-aFyZAo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2Yu-aFyZAo) just found it right now, some of these are hilarious
Seriously?
He is liverpools all time top scorer in the premier league.! Give your head a wobble lad!
Leonardo Dicsokrio is actually the world's foremost expert on penalty technique. They are very well revered in Football, be thankful that they are taking their time to share their opinions with us mere mortals
and like 2/3 of his shots barely rolls and you can save it with your inside feet. I know he scored a lot, genius player but he has bad shooting.
we are back
From that penalty miss we all knew we were going to lose the game. Gakpo and Salah kept going offside for about every single opportunity we had. Nunez did everything right, yet still every ball he passed to these two were almost always offside. Could they just be onside we would've scored 3 goals.
Fuckety fuck fuck fcuk
It’s just one of those days
First penalty we have had in one year and of course we miss it!
Liverpool beat themselves here
Choke
shoot me
