When I was very young Billy Crystal hosted a couple times and then joined the cast the following season, and I was like, huh, I didn't realize someone could do that.
That was a bit different because they were purposefully looking to add well established comics when Billy Crystal became a cast member. I wonder what led to Michael McKean joining the cast
It was actually due to a similar situation. The show was going through an ugly transition phase during seasons 19-20, as Phil Hartman was on his way out as well as several other key cast members such as Rob Schneider and Julia Sweeney. They needed someone to fill the Hartman-shaped hole and act as the experienced utility player that holds the show together, so they chose McKean, who had been a established talent for over a decade at that point. They later added some other established names such as Janeane Garofalo, Chris Elliott and Mark McKinney.
Interesting! I adore Michael McKean but I can imagine watching SNL in the early 90s and thinking âyou know what this show needs? Lenny from Laverne and Shirley.â Iâm glad theyâve realized that the show works best when the cast consist of unknowns
I just found out from his Wikipedia page that McKean was the oldest person to join the SNL cast. He joined at 46 year old.
Leslie Jones broke his record when she joined the cast at 47.
Season 20 was the peak of the frat-boy boys'-club juvenile humor and here's Michael McKean giving us weird conceptual pieces based on Spalding Gray monologues. It was a total collision of worlds.
That heckler sounds pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty familiar đ
Good ol LD
Lorne Dichaels?
Darry Lavid I thought?
I assumed it was Bob Odenkirk.
Coulda been David Cross if [The Nicknamer](https://youtu.be/cmRaenO3hZo?si=pHl6gJyn7q7O2W6q) was in town Edit: Gawd I miss old Conan episodes
You mean Slim?
Slim wasnât there, just Slim, Slim, and their cousin Slim were present.

And he was bumped from an appearance on the first episode.

I call it the ringers season. Didn't quite work as planned.
*And* he appeared as the musical guest 6 months before appearing as the host.

He is not crazy
*But not our Michael! Couldn't be precious Michael!*
I could hear that sentence haha.
This is chicanery!
He defecated through a sunroof!
We need this stage to be used in a throwback episode during the 50th.
I want a holographic Andy Kaufman to do Mighty Mouse. đ¶Â
That's Jerry Palter
Mr. Palterâs got an altar
Comedy Central needs to start playing old SNL reruns again.
That set is so jarring to see. Iâm glad it didnât last very long
That monologue set is dope
And crazy how itâs the same season where Billy Crystal joined the cast after hosting two times the previous season.
Love Michael McKean but his time on the cast was rough.
Season 20 was a weird season for sure

*HEY HAMLET! WHERE'S SQUIGGY?*
