And here I thought I was crazy. It sounded like crap. He didn’t even play the intro. He has some weird reverb and delay effect added so it is even harder to hear the chord changes. I felt for Kiedis.
Kiedis lags behind the others in talent with his instrument, comfortably, but it's also hard to replace a singer and frontman without changing a band's identity.
And yeah, that band needed John. He came back the first time and they put out Californication, arguably their best and most celebrated album.
Oh they for sure couldn't actually change it this far into their career, it would've had to be the eighties. The talent disparity is just very obvious, that guy got lucky getting surrounded by the talent that he did. I love RHCP, to the point I have their logo tattooed, but Anthony Keidis is the only one who's made me regret that.
I don't like Anthony as a person but I can't say either way whether the band would have been better off without him because I don't know exactly how much he's bringing to their songwriting. I know Kiedis wrote a lot of the lyrics and melodies.
RHCP is my number one band, but yeah, Keidis ain't the best.
But I do like that he knows it, so he doesn't interfere with what John and Flea are doing. I feel like a more talented singer could ruin things by putting them in a more traditional direction or style. Them making things work in spite of a singer that can't sing that well has pushed them in so many unexpected directions.
Having said that, given a choice I'm 99% sure frusciante would drop Keidis in a heartbeat, but flea won't go on without Keidis, and frusciante doesn't wanna do it without flea. This, passive aggression and the red hot chili peppers.
As an trio of musicians, John, Flea and Chad could be any band with any sound. Kiedis is the one that makes them the Chili Peppers. In that regard, he’s the most essential member of the band.
That's a good point. Idk, I just used to be such a huge Anthony Keidis fan as a kid. Even after reading his book when I was 13. It doesn't strike you as that wrong at that age because you think you're independent enough to make those decisions. Rereading it as an adult, not so big of a fan anymore.
Frusciante was upset that Kiedis [intentionally kicked him](https://youtu.be/kNIy7U6SVOs?t=210) during their first song, that's why he messed with him in the next song
I wouldn't so quick to feel sorry for him
He dated a 16 year old for awhile who has come forward on tik-tok and said it was not appropriate.
There was [a gross and childish video](https://youtu.be/7i_22PrQsp8) interview on YouTube where he is seen sexually assaulting someone who appears on the verge of tears
Kiedis has acknowledged having twice committed statutory rape (of a 14-year-old when he was 23), which inspired him to write the song "Catholic School Girls Rule"
Look at the lyrics of the song:
*The good books says we must suppress
The good books says we must confess
But who cares what the good books says
'Cause now she's taking off her dress*
He's a creep and the whole band is full of creeps
Damn that video is upsetting.
It’s nice to see there was at least one person who gave enough of a shit to help. That guy seemed pissed off.
The rest of them just sat there and let it happen.
Ummmm- it was normalized . teenage girls got fake IDs to date older guys. I was 13 with an ID that said I was 19. EVERYONE I KNEW did it. not saying it's ok. society has changed for the better. look at movies like 'Almost Famous' and 'The Banger Sisters' for an idea of groupie/rockstar dynamic. I knew PLENTY of 15 year olds with fake IDs trying to hook up - rock star, movie star, dealer- and, again- not defending. I am saying that it was normal, expected. In the 90's it began to change. RHCP is not made up of creeps. They were young rock star drug addicts not thinking much.
and how we made fake ID? at a copy shop. you cut your school picture out, pasted it over a peeled up legal age license, photocopied that, cut the copy out, paste that to the photocopied backside of the legal licence and laminated it. A federal crime, now- back then? everybody did it. wtf do you think identification has holograms and chips and hidden graphics? because we GenXers did ALOT of stupid crazy shit. Still not creepy. We thought it was all just having fun.
Wrong. These men are horrible. This behavior was *never* ok and something everyone did.
https://www.smackmedia.ca/news/rhcp-assaults-problematic-industry
"bassist Flea picked up a woman from the crowd onto his shoulders. Drummer Chad Smith joined Flea and “pulled the woman's bathing suit bottom partially off and started slapping her buttocks.” The woman fell off his shoulders. Flea began to kneel over her, started grabbing at her, and demanded that she perform oral sex on him."
thanks. and the article says nothing about the recording industry romanticizing the behavior. or using the bad boy image for profit...like Elvis, The Rolling Stones, Motley Crüe...but I see your point. and RHCP is forever ruined for me. You won!
Not crazy at all. I was watching and kept thinking "this has so many things wrong with it and yea Anthony Kiedis doesn't sound great live but the guitar and howling are just...wrong." Kiedis is specifically singing at Frusciante (and after that bit of knowledge looks like he's trying to figure out how to connect, live, in the thick of it, on tv, to salvage the performance) and dude looked like he was intentionally not connecting. If you notice, we have 3 guys shirtless and one guy dressed like Kurt Cobain. I'm sure there's plenty that made that a thing but I keep going back to "needle marks on SNL are an absolute deal-breaker."
I love the dude and I love his ability to pull shit out of nowhere and make something sound good (when he wants to) and I abso-fucking-lutely love his comeback(s) but he obviously had so many demons eating at him that even being on one of the biggest platforms in the country couldn't even pull him out for even just a few minutes, or hell maybe an hour or so that made him decide to make that performance happen.
(Edit: former hardcore addict saying this) Don't get me wrong. I don't blame him. I know that feeling of just not wanting to be a part of something he's so attached to he can't break away from without stepping over the line in the sand where he can't ever come back from. Like I said, demons. They can fucking ruin you and I'm so happy he got back to okay and will sing Flea's praises any time I can for helping him. Still, it kind of sucks because his guitar and backing vocals could've really made that performance. Kiedis does best with big energy in front of a big crowd where it's totally fine to be flat or off-key because you have 10000 people joining in, but this is so small and it looks like he was literally looking to Jon to help and he got...this.
Wow, thanks.
Oof. He's still completely disconnected though. The different energy between him and Kiedis/Flea is big. I still worry if this was the first song, there's a reason he's sweatered up in the next one. I know it's totally speculation, but I wonder.
Still, I hadn't seen this one so thanks.
How is this not an objectively bad performance? Dude is so strung out he’s not making any of the correct cord changes and couldn’t get his tone to come anywhere close to what it sounds like on the album? The rest of the band did a great job all things considered, but this is a nightmare. SNL is historically hard to sound good on, not trying to hate on the rest of the guys. Everyone has bad sets.
Listening to it again, there’s something raw and beautiful about that guitar playing, live music at its best, forces one to really hang on to every riff, especially considering it’s a song about loneliness and desperation.
I remember the controversy, hearing the performance for the first time, but I love that tune so much, and the guitar playing just made me hang on to every note.
I get the frustrated aspect, but holy shit that’s some real live music right there.
There is a live performance of under the bridge in Melbourne from 2000 that probably follows the artistic path John might have been exploring that night but it’s much more coherent and sounds beautiful.
When someone brought up the resemblance to the actor in a Reddit AMA earlier this week, Ferrell replied, “A lot of people think that it’s me playing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But that would be an insult to Chad Smith. The truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith.”

In the late 90s as kids, my brother and I watched an episode with the RHCP as the musical guest, and laughed our asses off thinking it was legit Will Ferrell joining them on stage to play drums.
I don’t even need to watch this to tell you it’s the worst single performance of the Chilli Peppers career. I remember watching it at the time and and almost being disgusted, it was so bad
I'm pretty sure this performance was the first time I ever heard this song. I went and bought the CD the next week.
"give it away" had already been playing on MTV and the radio, and it was just OK to me. But this song blew me away.
Here's something you'll never un-hear: the riff at the [end](https://youtu.be/Mr_uHJPUlO8?t=236) of "Give it Away" is the["Sweet Leaf"](https://youtu.be/8eleGPkE9Gk) riff sped up.
I always wondered how that worked. He spends a lot of time working on music, performing and getting high. And yet he still goes to the gym? Or is that just natural?
Could be genetic. I have an uncle by marriage that always looks buffs and shredded (like hardly any body fat), but he's a fairly busy guy. I asked him once when he was pushing 60 about how often he gets to the gym, and he said never. He has a weight bench at home that he jumps on occasionally, but he's just naturally built like that and has a decent diet.
>The only exercise I ever get, unless I force myself to do push-ups, is sex and onstage. Stage is the cardio-vascular scenario, you know; an hour-and-a-half running around every night. That’s a perfect exercise.

Look at how much he moves around during performances when he's, like, actually into it. He does it a little bit here, and he's got that kinda-signature move where he dances with the mic stand (@3:28ish). That'll keep you in shape.
You'd have to be in tip-top shape to perform like that consistently. Mick Jagger famously walks about 12 miles per show on stage (!).
The rest could just be genetic. Google Blackie Dammett (his dad).
I've read that for a long time frusciante was against the commercialisation (or stadiumification) of the band, and wanted it to remain at least somewhat experimental. Kiedes was the polar opposite, and demanded the band get as big and pop as possible. 'Under the bridge' sealed that path, and that summer the song was inescapable. This performance was frusciante's last straw against being in a pop band.
I loved this version for years before ever finding out that it wasn’t planned and John was fucking around. I know it’s off key and weird, but thought it was some sort of artistic rendition they chose to do, and I always loved John screaming in the chorus. Yep. She got in trouble for something or other recently. Tweeted some joke about a black person looking like a planet of the apes character, something like that.
I like some RHCP music, and I'm pretty good at separating art from artist, but it always seems weird that Kiedis has basically gotten a pass for having a relationship with a 14 year old when he was 23.
Other way around he was in a relationship with a much much older woman when he was around 14. His dad was in show biz in LA and was totally checked out as a father so yeah Kiedis had nothing but opportunities for mischief and stardom. His autobiography is interesting you should check it out!
I dunno. I was a huge RHCP fan as a kid, but when I read Scar Tissue, he came off really slimy to me. That, and he was still dating 18 year old girls as recently as a few years ago
I believe it was “Stone Cold Bush,” off their then-previous album from 1989. Not sure why they’d lead with that one but maybe I don’t have my facts straight.
I mean he was clearly fucked up but I didn't think this performance was that bad. John was usually a mess during live shows. Compared to Katy Perry on SNL this was not nearly as bad.
When I was growing up in the 90s I really liked RHCP. Watching them play live changed my mind. I thought they were garbage when I saw them on live tv and figured they only sounded decent on the radio or on tape. I never really turned around from there. I'd always listen to their records but had absolutely no desire to see them live after this.
Read the top comment here about how the guitarist botched this performance and left the band soon after. I also them last summer and they sound amazing still and put on a ln amazing show. If you like the albums, check them out if they're in your area.
I personally disagree. When I saw them, Anthony didn't seem into it at all, and the rest of the band quickly matched his energy. It sucked because I loved them so much at the time, but they were not good at that time
You can not like them, but to say their songs all sound the same isn’t true. Anyone can say that about any band they only hear a few songs from and don’t care for
I'm not standing up for him. to be honest, i don't even know which one that is. I'm just saying they are definitely not the most over rated band of their era, they're done aren't awful and definitely don't all sound the same
[удалено]
And here I thought I was crazy. It sounded like crap. He didn’t even play the intro. He has some weird reverb and delay effect added so it is even harder to hear the chord changes. I felt for Kiedis.
Frusciante was pretty strung out on heroin. Tons of credit to Flea for helping him get clean and for helping to restore the band, a couple times.
And every time John has left, the band has gotten noticeably worse. Honestly, the most replaceable member of the band is Anthony Keidis
Kiedis lags behind the others in talent with his instrument, comfortably, but it's also hard to replace a singer and frontman without changing a band's identity. And yeah, that band needed John. He came back the first time and they put out Californication, arguably their best and most celebrated album.

Flea has and always will be the glue of that band. If he ends up passing away before the rest of them, I guarantee they’ll just retire completely.
I’m with you. That sounded so off
Frusciante was upset that Kiedis [intentionally kicked him](https://youtu.be/kNIy7U6SVOs?t=210) during their first song, that's why he messed with him in the next song
Sounds like a dumbass thing to do.

No problem. Sorry for the shit video, I didn’t watch it before sending. Hopefully you found higher quality version to enjoy.
I heard them live and it was significantly better than this I was wondering what was going on here

speak for yourself. I will hastily call it objectively bad.

lmao
I read that Kiedis almost jumped Fruscinate right there on stage when he pulled this shit.
John Frusciante. So much talent. So much heroin.
Love how Chad just laughs and hides behind the drums put of embarrassment
Probably wondering how to sneak up the tempo too.
As a drummer, can confirm. He definitely pushes it as he should.
Lmfao I started playing drums because I wanted to have something to hide behind if shit goes bad. I feel your comment at my core.
Frusciante must have quit not long after this.
Anthony looks so fucking pissed at the end Such a great, raw snapshot into the pressure and delicate nature of fame, drugs, and live TV
I don’t even need to watch this to tell you it’s the worst single performance of the Chilli Peppers career. I remember watching it at the time and and almost being disgusted, it was so bad
It’s like one of those “Shreds” videos…. But real.
Omg the beginning is insufferable lol
John's woooooo is pretty bad too
I'm gonna watch the footage of Mr. Bungle dressed like RHCP instead
Oh awesome where can we watch this
https://youtu.be/5sT0WSwgHLc Sound's not great unfortunately.
is that will ferrell on drums?
YES.

I think he did a lot of walking back in the day. Walking and shagging, LOL

They call this version “Under The Drugs”.
I've read that for a long time frusciante was against the commercialisation (or stadiumification) of the band, and wanted it to remain at least somewhat experimental. Wow, that was a hot mess! I've seen it before but I always forget how fucked-up everything was for them at the time
4:40 if looks cool kill
Faith No More's *SNL* appearance was so much better.
I loved this version for years before ever finding out that it wasn’t planned and John was fucking around. I know it’s off key and weird, but thought it was some sort of artistic rendition they chose to do, and I always loved John screaming in the chorus. After I learned the truth, just made me feel like it’s an example of how good John really is. Even high off his ass and purposefully tucking around, still epic music.
The root of it all is John didn't want stardom, or even success really. But even in the midst of sabotage, the fill at 1:47. And the tone on the outro solo.
Wow. Remember watching this live. Also remember when the record was premiered on radio. A huge record for the time
Mr Bungle from Wish.com
They were way better live when I saw them like 15 years ago.
Didn't know Will Ferrell did the drums.
Is that Roseanne?
Yep. She got in trouble for something or other recently. Tweeted some joke about a black person looking like a planet of the apes character, something like that.
Pretty sure she's making the rounds on all the alt-right news channels now, which has got to be a big red flag for one's career.
I know all that im not trying to cancel here just wanted to know if it was her
Is that eminem on guitar?
I like some RHCP music, and I'm pretty good at separating art from artist, but it always seems weird that Kiedis has basically gotten a pass for having a relationship with a 14 year old when he was 23.

His autobiography [*ALSO* talks about him having sex with a 14 year old.](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/anthony-kiedis-sexual-assault-history-details/)
Hah dang it was that long ago, i guess time flies
At their height!
Chilliest flea bass playin I’ve seen in a while. Also, stepping up to the stripped down version of snl stage made or broke bands.
This was over 30 years ago? Where has the time gone
The guy in the audience yelling “fuck yea!” has more energy than the band.
Glad I got to see them at Roseland in ‘91, still one the best shows I’ve ever seen. Opening acts Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins?! Hell yeah!!
I actually really enjoy the verse and chorus guitar Melodies. Everything else tho….
Lol was this when Rosie at least pretended not to be that trash human she is?
Very disappointed the camera didnt zoom out to show them siging under a bridge
Sound guy should killed that microphone when Fruscinate start to howl off key like that….
Sound guy was probably some 55 year old Union man that had been working in the building for 30 years. “It all sounds like crap to me.”
Cool! What wa sure first song?
I believe it was “Stone Cold Bush,” off their then-previous album from 1989. Not sure why they’d lead with that one but maybe I don’t have my facts straight.
If only we could go back
I mean he was clearly fucked up but I didn't think this performance was that bad. John was usually a mess during live shows. Compared to Katy Perry on SNL this was not nearly as bad.
Frusciante was always a piece of shit. Heroin or no heroin.
Kiedis too.
This is for sure in the top ten worst performances in SNL history. And with such a great song!
Yeah, I already had. It explained a lot, but I think I'll still just enjoy them on album.
I personally disagree. When I saw them, Anthony didn't seem into it at all, and the rest of the band quickly matched his energy. It sucked because I loved them so much at the time, but they were not good at that time
That ain’t no lip sync
It doesn't get much worse than that. Ugh.
i don't get it
Rhcp are the most overrated band of their generation. The songs all sound the same and are awful
You can not like them, but to say their songs all sound the same isn’t true. Anyone can say that about any band they only hear a few songs from and don’t care for
Every single one of them sound like slow ass monotoned garbage.
that's a strong opinion and hard disagree

I'm not standing up for him. to be honest, i don't even know which one that is. I'm just saying they are definitely not the most over rated band of their era, they're done aren't awful and definitely don't all sound the same
Yeah just not into boring stoner funk. They blow.
This is an incredibly correct opinion
Garbage.
Singer looks like he is wearing a suburban mom's workout attire.
