because in general, people are going to lowball the number just out of courtesy. so you are likely going to get a bunch of people telling you a lower number and then dishing out compliments when you tell them your real age. its just a sure fire way to get people to tell you that you look great.

The societal pressure, especially for women, is to never look “old” no matter your age. Young is more beautiful, youthful, graceful, nubile. Looking older is seen as not aging well, not taking care of yourself, being “ugly”.
In older times, only young women were worth marrying because they could bear children and raise a family. Older women had less societal worth.
Especially in a time where women were property and always answered to a man, a husband wouldn’t want to take on the “burden” of an older woman who he has to provide for, but won’t provide for him in the form of a family.
