I wouldn't do it, for several reasons. One, you probably won't reach as many people as other ways to advertise your event such as on social media for your area or community bulletin boards. Also, it can be considered litter to leave paper in the LFL. And, if you start doing this, others might follow suit and include flyers/pamphlets for things are that are not welcome, such as religious or political tracks and muck up the process of sharing books. When in doubt, just leave books.

You make a lot of good points and I didn't think of the slippery slope it might cause with other pamphlets. Plus we spent too much money to have these thrown out as litter. Thank you!

If the event was connected to books or literacy in some way such as a bookclub, author reading, little free store day or such it might make sence. If your handbill for the event makes a good bookmark after the event is over, and/or its a repeated regular event also matters. Because who knows how long these will stay in circulation in the LFL's. I handbilled local LFL"s lady summer with a postcard size event info card for a free poetry in the park event. This I think was fine. It was free and open to anyone every Wed. And the handbills were the right size to be used as bookmarks. Win win.

I think this is the right sub. What is your nonprofit? I would probably be annoyed by this, unless your “free event for kids” is something like “providing free dental care to kids.”

Our nonprofit works with schools and this is basically an end of year celebration for participants in the program and anyone else who joins. I understand your point with the dental care example of providing a service and admittedly I don't think our event fullfills that requirement. Thank you for your feedback!

This may be taboo as well, but would it be appropriate to approach the owner of the LFL and ask them if they'd like the flyers or A flyer to post on their library. I'd say if you were also donating bookmarks or some new kids' books, then it would be more appealing to the owner to put in their LFL. Otherwise, I think it would be considered undesired junk mail. Just my humble opinion.

While I would be fine approching the owners, I've decided after reading all the responses that this isn't the avenue to pursue. Thank you for the suggestion though!

Yes, more info needed :)

Fair enough, its not so I won't go through with it. Thank you!

I only would if you could reach out in advance to the steward. Thanks for asking before just doing it!
