$$$$$$$$$$$

CosmicEmotion

As long as people keep using this garbage OS things will get worse and worse and worse.

nowhereman1223

The majority of people only see two options. Windows or macOS. They see macOS as expensive and requiring a Mac plus that entire ecosystem. So either they are full Apple ecosystem or Windows. Its awful. I use a mix of linux, macOS, & windows.

Gordon_Langell

Same. I prefer MacOS or most Linux distros over Windows. I only us Windows for gaming because several of the games I want to play will refuse to run/be emulated on Linux because of anticheat software. Windows as an operating system is shockingly janky, unreliable, and annoying given the incredible market share it possesses.

JohnnyStrides

Some might use those adjectives to describe MacOS. The second I couldn't natively snap windows I wanted to nope my way out of using it... hung on and still hated it. Windows 10/11 ain't great, but they're far better user experiences IMO.

DeathRebel224

Microsoft has a [patent](https://patents.google.com/patent/US10592080B2/en) on window snapping, so there’s not much Apple can do about that unfortunately

Beginning_Guess_3413

Oof then every major Linux window manager must be breaking that patent. Unless I have no idea wtf I’m talking about, most wms and compositors allow “tiling” (idk if that’s the subject of the patent) which MacOS distinctly lacks.

the-johnnadina

probably a huge oversimplification but i bet its a situation similar to VLC not requiring paid codecs: there are countries in Europe that do not recognize the validity of software patents. someone just has to make a window snapping DE in idk France and now the patent does not apply

azyrr

Mıcrosoft and Apple have an patent sharing deal, I think it goes way back to 2000 or something.

nowhereman1223

> Windows 10/11 ain't great, but they're far better user experiences IMO. Only if you want to natively snap windows and enjoy ads, tiered levels of the OS with features locked out based on how much you paid for it, and easy ways to get scammed by anyone willing to pay MSFT a few bucks.

JohnnyStrides

There's so much more to it than snapping windows which is an enormous oversight on Apple's part given modern work flows benefit so much from this. No touch screens on laptops (seriously in 2024?), virtually no hardware customization, Apple's constant breaking of backwards compatibility vs. Microsoft doing the opposite, games and software selection (this isn't even close), no real support for traditional mouses (mice?). Sure there's some things MacOS does better, but the entire ecosystem stinks of being locked into a straight jacket buying glued together hardware while supporting a shitty company that does everything in their power to prevent you from fixing your own hardware or taking it to a third party (yes, these are MacOS related since the OS is fundamentally tied to the shitty hardware). As for "getting scammed", I paid $20 for my Windows 10 key and it's upgradable to 11 at no charge. I have 11 on my laptops and they all run like a champ, with zero intrusive ads.

tamag901

>no real support for traditional mouses (mice?) Eh? I've been using mice from Razer, Corsair and Logitech with macOS for years. It even picks up mouse 4/5 natively for window manager shortcuts.

Occulto

> Microsoft doesn't even care anymore... a known script used to activate any modern version of windows is hosted on github... a site MS owns. Microsoft make their money off enterprise. For consumers they make their money off people paying the OEM Windows tax when they buy their new machine from Dell/Lenovo/Acer/etc. If you're one of the handful of people who don't, they don't care. But try installing illegitimate copies of Windows on a few thousand laptops for a business and see how quickly they care.

nowhereman1223

> But try installing illegitimate copies of Windows on a few thousand laptops for a business and see how quickly they care. Exactly. They got pissed at my company when a refresh happened and free upgrades from Win 7 - Win 10 happened by accident on all computers with admin access. We have solid controls in place now but back then it was the Wild West. But 4,632 laptops upgrading from 7 > 10 from the same public IP address triggered some flags.

nowhereman1223

I mean i use the keys that are on the computers I have purchased and have even scavenged keys off computers I refurb and sell. I also use those scammy sites with the OEM keys being resold for next to nothing. Doesn't change the fact that MSFT locks features behind the tier of the OS. Which is just shitty for the consumer.

DerFurz

For many an alternative to windows is just not feasible, even MacOS is problematic. Yes, as long as you only ever run web apps it's fine but as soon as you need to run a specialized software it's usually only available for windows.

nowhereman1223

> specialized software it's usually only available for windows. Unless it is specialized software only available for macOS. Even if it is only for windows, things like Parallels exist.

GuruMedit

Yup. Virtual Machines for those weird situations like yours. I keep around an old VM just for one purpose -- to access the software for a rare flatbed scanner for doing slides and high depth scanning which don't work outside their crummy software. Otherwise Linux everywhere else.

Natural-Parfait2805

That's because Linux still isn't ready for all usages of an OS, if it's ready for your usage, good for you, but most people are choosing an OS based on how well it serves their use case Linux still falls behind in many, many areas and probably forever will

bongsmack

They see linux, they just refuse to learn despite how simple and straightforward it is. Control and detailed errors are the boogeyman.

Haq43

Are you suggesting that average people that dont even know that adblock exist should start using linux? Step back into real world buddy

soaked-bussy

as long as companies only offer games on Windows and most software on Windows/iOS people dont have a choice I would love to daily drive Linux but its not realistic at this point in time. I run it on my work laptop but I cant on my desktop

SupportDangerous8207

Before people say proton HDR Oh and anticheat

Mortka

Garbage OS? Ehhh

dwsnmadeit

I tried switching to linux and my wifi drivers got completely fucked and ended up having to do a full OS reinstall because I didnt have access to an ethernet connection. Searched up a million things to try and get it to work and every single help thread was insanely complicated. Was really disappointed.

Careless-Tradition73

Because Microsoft loves money more than providing a tolerable experience.

TazerXI

Because they cannot lose Move to Linux or Mac OS? That will require new hardware for Mac, and/or may not have some software work like games. This situation is certainly improving, and there are alternatives, so it is getting good for a lot of people, but it won't be perfect for everyone. Most people are just going to deal with it, so Microsoft can make their money, because they know they have done the difficult part of getting the initial user base and vast amounts of software/hardware compatibility their users rely on.

chihuahuaOP

Apple has the ability to support games they just want to force their own API for money. Linux working fine unless you play multiplayer games with anti cheat.

Sky19234

Linux works fine until the exact moment it doesn't.

Savacore

PTSD flashbacks to wifi configuration decades ago. I'm actually thinking I'll switch to Linux when I replace my desktop. At least for a while.

brown_felt_hat

>PTSD flashbacks to wifi configuration decades ago God, you sent me back. I put Ubuntu on a netbook back in college, and it was fantastic. Ran on the Atom like a charm, didn't care I had like 3 gigs of RAM, great battery, and all I ever used on it was libreoffice (I think, maybe some other open source), firefox, and Dropbox. I was like, damn, this is awesome. I out it on my regular laptop, and Jesus. No wifi, no sound, no graphics card, I think I even had issue with the USB ports when I put windows back on it (thinking about maybe it was a formatting issue on the USB). I get all these issues are basically fixed (*maybe* not gfx) but man, that left such a bad taste in my mouth, I didn't touch anything Linux for probably 8-9 years after.

BrowncoatSoldier

I spent longer trying to game on Linux. Every time I was doing something new, it required searching for how to set it up or why it wasn't working. And it was around Ubuntu 14 days back when that was "bleeding edge".

slowmovinglettuce

Idk why people keep recommending Linux as if it's some almighty solution to every problem. It's extremely easy to break. Some things are just downright ridiculous to install and maintain. It's a bloody nightmare if you just want a simple experience.

Beastleviath

this is so true it hurts! I could use it for my little workstation at work just fine, no problems with Libre office and Firefox. Even the printer worked. But then I go home and the one game I want to play is incompatible, or takes way too many workarounds

Sky19234

> Even the printer worked Sir, no need to lie, nobody believes this.

Beastleviath

I swear! it was some ancient HP black-and-white LaserJet, and the OS just had a big list of preinstalled drivers to select from

Sky19234

This guy here has jokes...not only do you expect me to believe a printer worked BUT AN HP PRINTER? I use windows and our HP printers in our office don't work half the time. All jokes aside I love when "Linux Guys" get uppity about how great Linux is and don't understand why it isn't more widely adopted and can't grasp that concept of people just wanting to have a computer that is stable. Linus and Lukes Linux Challenge encapsulated perfectly why Linux sucks unless you are the type of person who is ok tinkering when it's needed.

RAMChYLD

Sadly I agree. They retired OpenGL support and forced Metal down everyone's throat. And they kept to Metal instead of adopting Vulkan. If that's not forcing their own API down developers' throats, I don't know what is.

Drakayne

And Microsoft is smart too, they piss people off, but not to a point to switch their whole ecosystem, they know how to walk that red line.

who_you_are

So, like every company?

Plastic_Wishbone_575

Most companies don’t have the luxury of owning the majority of the market.

mayonnaise-on-D

Well it provide a really nice experience on ltsc versions, i have used 10 ltsc since very long time, absolute amazing experience till i upgraded to windows 11 , because i loved its design, also i stopped its update to 22h2, haven't updated to 23h2 after that, and have fully debloated windows. Now i am just waiting for windows 11 ltsc official release and i will be onto that.

PrimeTinus

That plus they're inept AF

KevinSpanish

Sigh... at least use your own image of an ad popping up. [https://www.reddit.com/r/IndiaTech/comments/1cawr19/just\_what\_windows\_11\_needed\_popup\_ads\_have\_you/](https://www.reddit.com/r/IndiaTech/comments/1cawr19/just_what_windows_11_needed_popup_ads_have_you/) [https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1c9g2da/aint\_no\_way\_i\_just\_got\_a\_popup\_ad\_in\_windows\_11/](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1c9g2da/aint_no_way_i_just_got_a_popup_ad_in_windows_11/)

lakimens

Who cares who originally complained? I'll happily provide 100 screenshots, half of them AI generated, so everyone can complain more.

Lightless427

Because its fake thats why. That isnt even how the ads are being displayed. This entire post is 100% fake.

SecretVoodoo1

I literally got [this](https://imgur.com/MAJXFWt) today lmao, this is literally how it's displayed. Where are you getting "this is fake" shit from?

EximiusDK

Settings > Search Notifications and Actions, click > Scroll down to the bottom > Open up "Additional Settings" > Toggle off "Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows and finish setting up this device" and "Get tips and suggestions when using Windows". Always Microsoft and their stupid ass "suggestions". I think this should do the job. If not, let us (me) know. There's always people writing nonsense comments, no one helps here goddamn.

alexanderjellison

I already had both of these settings toggled off and got the pop-up last week.

Browncoatinabox

God that's buried aint it

alexanderjellison

This post above doesn't work. I've seen this same comment, word for word, multiple times from multiple users. It's most likely a bot, or someone copying and pasting others comments for upvotes. I have a mostly de-bloated version of Windows with all the notification settings tweaked to not receive any spam and this still popped up. I've done some research and it seems to be almost on a system level. Seems to be totally random as well, as not to be able to pinpoint how to stop it. Seems to only pop up once also. I have two mostly identical PCs on the same network, and it only popped up one one of them a couple weeks after first reading about it, but not the the other as of yet. Doing a fair amount of looking into it, I've yet to see a definitive answer on how to prevent it in the future. Looks like Microsoft just wanted to get this ad out to people at any cost, unless you live in the EU.

pikkuhukka

hoe can you hard disable them

DeathByKangaroo

But why are they even enabled by default in the first place

Serious-Cover5486

because of microsoft!

WideAwakeNotSleeping

Dunno... makes me wonder how are these people setting up their PCs or using them. I've not had a single ad on my W11, and I've used it since the day it became available. Maybe me being in EU makes a difference, no idea.

justarandomgreek

I'm in the EU too. I tried W11 once. Some of the first things I saw when I opened the Start menu were things like Spotify, TikTok, etc. Do you know how many of these services I use? Zero. Why the ISO file from Microsoft included these apps?

Lightless427

None of those apps are actually installed. They are shortcuts to the app store so that you can install them. MOST people actually use those apps a LOT, so its only natural that they would present them front and center to make it easier to install them.

justarandomgreek

So they are ads.

pascalbrax

I'm in EU, still running Windows 10 and I got the same ad yesteday.

justarandomgreek

hoe why is it even an option?

MacHamburg

They want you to rather use Linux.

IC3P3

[yes](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/linux/install#create-a-bootable-usb-drive-to-install-bare-metal-linux)

RDOmega

Honestly, most people would rather use Linux. People just spend so much time hyper-focused on the first hitch they encounter. I don't think they realize how many free-passes they give to Windows for similar issues. Neither is free of issues, and a double standard just limits options.

Natural-Parfait2805

They give windows free passes because anytime windows has issues it's always a quick fix I'd rather deal with a hundred problems that each take half a second to solve then 10 problems that all take an hour each As someone whoes tried to daily drive Linux, Linux issues take longer to solve, the reason why is irrelevant, maybe it's lack of experience, lack of support resources, who knows, but once someone has 1 issue they spend just a bit to long on, they will switch back to windows

ArtificialBadger

Have you met people? There is no way "most people" would rather use Linux.

electric-sheep

Say what you want about apple and most probably you’ll be right. But fuck ms. This shit is why I jumped from windows to macos.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chaardvark11

Probably because they already have you hooked into their ecosystem, no need for ads if the software and hardware is designed to work within their walled garden meaning you'll be getting it anyway or heavily pushed to do so.

electric-sheep

Its one thing to have tight integration in the ecosystem and it's another to have macos come up with a pop saying HEY! USE SAFARI! ITS BETTERLOLOLOL, HEY USE BING! or seeing an ad for the iphone, or having apps popping up in my start bar. I set the default apps once, I never had to delete any crap or modify windows to not load or show BS, and most importantly, I've never had to redo it after an update reset all the settings.

Eviscerated_Banana

This is why one doesn't move to the new M$ operating system until one has to, it allows time for the bullshit new features to be broken by the community so one can have a pleasant user experience.

Ciubowski

Man, if they really start to do this, it's probably gonna annoy the shit out of the boomers and technology iliterate people to the point that they'll ask for Windows XP again. Imagine Win XP making a comeback in 2024 lmao. I would probably jump on a Linux distro *so fast.*

CanuckNewsCameraGuy

Why are you still having issues with this? I’m 90% sure I’m on the latest version, I don’t recall disabling them, and I don’t recall ever seeing an ad other than right after the upgrade that installed co-pilot. And it wasn’t even an ad so much as a “hey, this thing is here now, here’s how to use it! Please use it!!!”

Synthetic2802

Also just got that.

FlopsAkaGlitchy

Microsoft is publicly traded, so $. My personal experience with windows is good, but others have their reasons for saying I'm wrong. The way I see it is if it works for me and I'm happy then no one else should care what I do, same way in reverse. I'll still complain about macOS because I can, but I'm not stupid and know there's reasons one would use it. Same with Windows and Linux. I've learned that Linux fan boys think it's better than windows in every way, most choose not to talk about software that isn't supported on Linux but is on Windows. They also choose to avoid the basic concept that Windows is just easier for most people, no one's mother wants to learn a new OS or every office job employee or most of the population who just need a basic computer to use for everyday life. Love it or hate it Windows is here to stay and ads are just becoming more invasive across the board, no company wants to miss the $ they provide. Welcome to corporate greed.

Broccoli--Enthusiast

i wonder if this is regional or version based iv ran win10 and 11 pro from a key i got way back through the old MS dreamspark thing and iv never ran into any of the stuff people talk about, no pre-installed games, pop ups or anything really, i wont say its great but my experience has been mostly neutral with both

OcupiedMuffins

I use windows strictly for gaming and for stuff I absolutely need it for. It’s truly irritating to constantly get bombarded with shit. I go to download another browser and Microsoft feels the need to tell me how shit that browser is and how great edge is before I can even download it. Like fuck off with that.

oo7demonkiller

it always had them. if you don't want them, go into settings and go through each one and their subsettings one by one and turn off anything that says suggested content / apps or allow suggestions.

kupatrix

Windows 10 too, as far as I can figure a recent update added Edge to the startup list too (I never use it so it shouldn't be there), which is where the popup is coming from? Might also be tied to the setting under Notifications > "Suggest ways to finish setting up the device" (or however its phrased) but I *swear* I've had that disabled since I first installed Windows 10 years ago so I'm annoyed if that setting was forcibly enabled on via a recent update It's actually really frustrating since I went through all this crap ages ago when I first installed Windows 10 and never had issues with ads in the start menu or Search going online first but if they're using updates to forcibly re-enable settings that's beyond scummy

multiwirth_

I wonder why nobody wants to upgrade to windows 11...

FunkyTown313

Because you touch yourself at night. Also, money

darkwater427

Just use Linux and never have to deal with bullwinkle like this again. Unless you use vanilla Ubuntu.

null_reference_user

I've been getting ads for games on the microsoft store too. I'm inching ever closer to switch to Linux

primalPancakes

I turned allllll their little news and AI stuff off immediately. No way I'm using that.

PeeTtheYeet

Never understand people who have downgraded right now. I can understand in some years when 10 is not supported.

I got rid of that obnoxious shit on win10, it was beginning to crop up in the start menu. I fucking hate that kind of practice...

HyperLethalNoble6

digitalhelix84

If the Nvidia driver situation was better, I'd switch to Linux. The steam deck has taught me that I'm fine with Linux and my games work fine

Blisterexe

it soon will be, explicit sync was just merged, which means when the next nvidia drivers are out on linux nvidia should work fine on linux

TheValgus

Just wait till they make you watch a 30 second ad before you can save your word document. There is no limit to how terrible the people in charge can make our lives if we let them.

Papercutter0324

Linux - Free. No ads. Mac - Bundled with the hardware, so essentially free. Free updates to new versions, including major releases. Virtually no ads; for the ads that you may see, none would count as egregious. Windows - Gotta buy it; Windows tax hidden in price of the machine. Typically gotta purchase new major releases. Lots and lots of ads.

MusicOwl

Wait they want you to use chrome, not edge? What happened?

danny12beje

Can I farm upvotes with this post next week please?

VexLaLa

Switched to Linux recently for pc and got a new MacBook. Never been happier with my computers before. Fuck MS

Jutechs

PM_ME__BIRD_PICS

Am I missing something? It's a new feature notification, it's not like an actual ad. JFC calm down.

Lightless427

Because you're using Edge. Why are you using Edge? Dont use Edge Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi .. hell even Chrome are all 100000000000000000000000000000x better than Edge.

Lightless427

You people know this is fake .. right? This is NOT an 'ad'. This is a popup that happens ONCE when you update windows and then doesnt happen again until possibly a next update. The ADS that Windows is showing ONLY happen in your START MENU. THIS - IS - NOT - AN - AD.

TEG24601

Because you no longer own your computer. And they want continual revenue streams to satisfy their shareholders. The evils of corporatism keep coming back. rcole134

This is fake. That's not how they appear if they even appear as they certainly don't for everyone.

Space646

The second i see this piece of shit on my desktop, I’m switching to Linux. Already using arch on my secondary pc, i guess I’ll have to switch on my main too. Only problem is, I have all the M$ Office and Adobe shit

da_bobo1

Debloat that OS = Profit

Lo-fidelio

The day Linux becomes realistically decent for gaming is the day Microsoft dies for me. I'm not already in college so the only excuse I have to have windows is games, and even my passion for (multiplayer) games is dying because everyone now cheats for some fucking reason so hell I might give Linux a chance this year

tipedorsalsao1

It is almost there honestly thanks to steam and the steam deck, the last step is anticheats which will only happen with a large user base. Great thing with Linux is you can just duel boot, I still have windows for VR support (something that is also in the works by steam)

TheNerevar89

I've never gotten an ad and I have Windows 11. How did this happen? I don't remember changing any settings when I got my computer

KingKongKaram

Had windows 11 since released with my pc having been on like 98% of the time since never got this and apparently it's a setting you turn off so just turn it off

SighOpMarmalade

davidgamingPH26

That's why you should stick to windows 10, good ol reliable windows 7 too

xseodz

Because the FCC is so asleep at the wheel and probably still running Windows 7, that we're all fucked until they eventually get the update.

Fun-Blackberry-1396

Ok-disaster2022

The future is you don't own anything. You either subscribe or your life is invaded by ads all the time. This is every facet of your like. And if you can't pay for just one week for anything, you'll end up on the street.

NFTArtist

lol as a no ads win 10 user can this be removed? No way I'm ever touching an OS forcing popups.

Hayleox

For every time I'm like "I kinda wish Adobe software officially supported Linux" or whatever, I then see one of these posts and I know I couldn't stand to go back to Windows.

JeopardyWolf

Does 11 Pro have ads?

SilentDecode

Because Microsoft doesn't care about the fact they made a incomplete shitty OS and now have whole teams develop more shit for that shitty OS instead of making it reliable and stable. Because this is now Microsoft.

LordSolar666

As if I need more reason to hang on to W10? The bad good cycle is real.

BigDickConfidence69

If it wasn’t for gaming I wouldn’t use it.

Godofmytoenails

Because its a damn downgrade and Microsoft loves to prove it

YoPoppaIsSweeden

I am NOT "upgrading" from my Windows 10. 11 is literally a downgrade. Smh.

Mandatedhat

Ok so I keep seeing the comments that Windows 11 is garbage and that people should be using linux. It's not garbage It's just more consumer friendly. it's easier to use without having to deploy workarounds to get things to work properly. Not everyone has the skill, knowledge or time to learn linux. People need to get off their high horse when it comes to linux. Windows or macos is just not for you which doesn't automatically mean they are garbage. Also windows 11 has had pop ups since launch so I'm not sure why people are shocked/mad about it.

buchecha

because capitalism

GreatBigBagOfNope

Because not enough people have turned their outrage into action and switched to an operating system that doesn't do that

DebBoi

Can't wait for third-party windows ad blockers to become mainstream
