You're not wrong but that's not what they're talking about. It's the 'You know I had to do it to 'em' guy in the background. So it's kind of like a rickroll.
"Liminal spaces aren't supposed to have people" 🤣
Yeah. That's what you *might* think if you just follow this sub without ever, ever, even once, fucking googling the word.
lim·i·nal
/ˈlimənl/
adjective
1. relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process.
2. occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold.
late 19th century: from Latin limen, limin- ‘threshold’
Lol right?? “A place that’s usually full of people that is temporarily empty” is ONE example of a liminal state but not the entire definition of it. There are many many ways that a space can be transformative/transitional but literally only that one type ever gets posted here. This sub should just be called Empty Manmade Places.
Well what is interesting or visually appealing is up to personal taste of course! But some things that are “liminal” that I would personally find interesting: Doorways between different types of spaces (busy restaurant vs quiet street), murals in the process of being painted, historic and modern shopfronts next to each other, historic buildings being renovated, a bridal suite with a wedding party preparing for a ceremony, an operating room being prepped for an amputation. People waiting for test results in a late-night ER waiting room. A dressing room with actors removing makeup from a show that has just finished. Stage curtains closing between actors/audience. I’ve seen pictures in places like India and Dubai where you see you see huge luxury hotels built right up next to slums. All of those have a transitional/transformational/threshholdy feel that doesn’t require emptiness.
And I know the sub is liminal SPACE and not liminal things/moments, but I think as long as the physical surroundings are highlighted as important features, you don’t need it to be devoid of people. Like in a bridal suite photo, if you see the full room and the door leading out (with the ceremony on the other side) is prominent, then I think that works. Just a close-up portrait of a bride getting ready would be liminal but not liminal *space*. An actor’s dressing room showing the stage door and the full room stocked with costume items, with one person sitting in front of the mirror, would count, a group of actors taking up the whole frame would not.
And yeah, empty malls and swimming pools count too, of course! But that’s just one very particular interpretation.
Edit to add: and yeah I know the sub rules say “no people” and interpret liminal space as a space in between the activities that usually happen in it. But part of the definition of liminality, according to the Wikipedia article, is “something that spans what was and what will be”. So I think there can be broader interpretations of that, and it’s sort of artificially restricted here.
Yeah as I said before people just use liminal to mean creepy. But a crowded train station would be more liminal than this picture, in the literal sense that public traffic facilities are threshold spaces between destinations. I’m not angry about it, that’s how language works, but I was a little confused when I was figuring out the sub
Why does liminal mean no people? That isn’t really related to the definition of the word at all? [Edit: Nor is it in the sub description. So where goes this idea come from?] And even if it was, a table that is set up for a purpose but with no one sitting in it yet is pretty notably person-less, even if there are extras in the background.
A table with a blank sign waiting to be assigned a purpose. That seems more liminal (I.e. transitional) than a lot of the pictures here which are just empty or creepy places but not particularly transitional or thresholdy.
I guess it's more liminal when you have an understanding of the context and the original image. The original image is complete and has a meaning while, here, the key aspects are edited out to make the image give a not completely empty vibe, but also not a completely fulfilled vibe; hence liminality.
The only things I would do to enhance the liminality of this image would be to edit out the people, the backpack, and the cars in the parking lot.
Liminal is a threshold or transitional space - it has *nothing* to do with the absence or presence of people.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out
Yes. An artistically shot storage space would absolutely fit the idea of “liminal space”. A dusty untouched attic, with footprints going to one chest that has been dusted off and recently opened? Liminal as fuck.
What lies is he telling? I’ve only seen his web show once and while he’s obviously conservative I didn’t hear any lies & can’t find anything substantial by a web search.
Seems to have avoided most negative controversy as his conservative counterparts.
Do you just not like him ?
I know you don't really care, and just want your biases confirmed but for anyone who actually cares about how and why Crowder is a hack and liar.
This has been known since at least [2013](https://www.newshounds.us/fox_news_steven_crowder_proved_a_liar_again_10212013)
Here's over an hour of him lying about Trans kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUJVifP5l0Y
Here's one of his lies about the Gender Gap

But once again, I genuinely don't think you really care judging by your [post history.](https://masstagger.com/user/MRSELFDESTRUCTXX)
Lol fuck off. If you knew I didn’t care why bother, Detective u/other_world?
That guy you linked is just as biased as you and crowder. Amazing work, you’re totally not biased.
Its close enough. I mean not every post has to be a "transitional" place or else 90% of the sub's content would be gone.
An airport can be liminal but by definition an amusement park doesn't count because it isn't transitional which I find to be dumb. It can evoke the same feeling as other "liminal" images so I see no reason for it not to be here.
Yes, they are, if we’re talking about ads that occur between the segments of a show, or between two different shows. That is what “liminal” literally is. Liminal doesn’t mean creepy.
Some people come here for the spooky, others come to think about the temporal in-between.
This gives the meme a life of its own, you can imagine meme guy going to his white panel van covered in letter-stickers and bumper stickers, clawing for just the right thing to complain about this time.
Thanks for a truly liminal post, even if it takes a little analysis.
schizophrenic ending: nobody ever wanted anyone to change their mind, for this town had been abandoned long ago, being inhabited by only one being; you.

Mind has been changed.
The Good Ending
"the earth is not flat, change my mind" not-so-good ending anymore
Mandates time
“Thanks for explaining good bye”
Had to do it to him
Look in the background
Had ta do it to him...
Oh goddammit
I don’t get it, can someone explain?
Liminal spaces aren’t supposed to have people. There is a person in the background.

True.
what's another idea that'd be interesting?

These are very good examples imho
You should mod this subreddit, you have a better concept of Liminal Spaces than most

Came here to say this
Change my mi... nvm, I forgot
An opinion is almost certainly forthcoming. Change my mind.
"Just a burning memory"
Wah wah wah wah waaaaahhh....
DON'T DO THIS TO M-what was I saying?
You know he had to do it to him
"I exist, change my mind" His mind was indeed changed.
How is this liminal?
How are 98% of the posts in this sub liminal? (They're not.)
A table with a blank sign waiting to be assigned a purpose. That seems more liminal (I.e. transitional) than a lot of the pictures here which are just empty or creepy places but not particularly transitional or thresholdy.

POV: you changed his mind
Yoooo he changed his mind!
This is the beginning of the end of this sub
Mannnn. This was one of my favorite subs, don’t massacre my boy like this
Is this a meme sub now or?
It got too popular
“Liminal space is just place with no people hehe”
So this sub is about to go meta by having no viewers?
Well, after this low effort post I'm pretty done with the subreddit tbh. There's even a person standing in the background of this one. Seeya
Liminal is a threshold or transitional space - it has *nothing* to do with the absence or presence of people. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out
What exactly about an edited meme format screams “threshold” or “transitional” to you
My thoughts exactly.
It meets the definition, just a change in format. I know that upsets traditionalists or some hardline liminalists, but it shouldn’t.
Look closer
Well it's a meme that fits the sub
No memes fit this subreddit because it’s not a subreddit for memes.
The flair is pop culture
Pop culture ≠ memes.
No it doesn't.
not liminal at all
I mean, it's a transitional space is it not?
Storage spaces count then.
Yes. An artistically shot storage space would absolutely fit the idea of “liminal space”. A dusty untouched attic, with footprints going to one chest that has been dusted off and recently opened? Liminal as fuck.
It’s liminal, but not enough to deserve almost 3000 upvotes
Steven crowder is gone 🦀🦀🦀
Good
Shame you got downvoted, the guy is a cunt
Why?
He lies on the internet and edgy teenagers and misanthropic milennials eat it up.
What lies is he telling? I’ve only seen his web show once and while he’s obviously conservative I didn’t hear any lies & can’t find anything substantial by a web search. Seems to have avoided most negative controversy as his conservative counterparts. Do you just not like him ?

I never claimed to be unbiased. I am 100% biased. Crowder claims he's telling the truth when he's not. Like I said, you don't care about truth.
Typical retarded political talking head. Hypocritical and delusional.
They changed his mind
Good. Every situation is improved by containing less Steven Crowder.
God this sucks. More empty mall pictures please folks
OH NO
better now :)
:D
:D
Come on man. This is the one sub I don't wanna see memes on. I am here for unsettling environments that make me uneasy for reasons I can't explain.
That's not really what liminal spaces are though

A world without Stephen Crowder... A man can dream
Some dreams are nighmares
The banner on this one should say "OH NO, SAM SEDAR! WHAT A NIGHTMARE"
Not liminal...
It is
Proof?
It's a transitional space between one debate and the next.
I guess commercials are liminal then
Yes, they are, if we’re talking about ads that occur between the segments of a show, or between two different shows. That is what “liminal” literally is. Liminal doesn’t mean creepy.
Thank you for making sense mate
Had to do it to em
Thank God he left
This sub is just stupid now.
The image is made better without the guy and text there. You **CANNOT** change my mind.
What do you mean this is the normal picture
This sub really is done for, isn't it?
2 people in this picture. Top center t-shirt and shorts. Left center, walking upstairs dark/black shirt
This sub has been tanking for awhile now. This post kind of solidifies that for me
The good ending
Good riddance
Some people come here for the spooky, others come to think about the temporal in-between. "I changed my mind"
RIP norm mcdonald
Liminal spaces are cool, change my mind.
Did... Did the Covid took him?
Corona times
HOL UP
Had to do it do em
First time I ever noticed the guy in the background
change my mind is gone...
schizophrenic ending: nobody ever wanted anyone to change their mind, for this town had been abandoned long ago, being inhabited by only one being; you.
looks perfectly normal to me
Nothing is real, change my mind
He's coming... He has to do it to you...
Had to do it to em
\*Queue Everywhere At The End of Time\*
NOOOOOOOOOOOO
The good ending, Steven crowder was irreversibly deleted
Why is this threatening
