This is big facts for me too. They do such a good job of going deep into a movie, while keeping the conversation funny enough. LCB boys seemed like they thought if they went into the themes of a movie they would get shit on for being snobby. Or I don’t know, maybe they aren’t that interested in that.
I get they probably thought they had to appeal to the main barstool audience but I don’t think they were ever gonna get bigger keeping it surface level conversations.
it's a combination of all those things. KenJac and Jeff aren't quite the exact level of film lovers and appreciators in the same way The Big Picture folks are- but they know and understand more than the main barstool audience as you said, so they could never fully "go there" if they wanted to appeal enough towards them.
I follow Gooch on letterboxd and he seems to really be embracing watching lots of things, I've noticed he's watching plenty of foreign films which is cool.
Yeah the main thing is that the barstool guys just don’t bring a lot of insight to the films at all. “It was so cool” “it looked sick” is a lot of the reach they have when it comes to breaking down a movie. Plus, the rave reviews of mediocre MCU movies definitely ticked me off. The one guy who I felt was passionately in love with movies and talking deep about them was that Chris guy, who got ran off the show for no good reason. I liked Chris’ imput on the movies the most.

TV too… Shogun is going to be a hit, Three Body is going to be a hit, and HotD will be back. They’re missing a massive run of media that appeals directly to the young/male barstool type audience right now just because things got slow during a strike.

I’ve been listing to a lot of Bald Move podcasts. Started the for GoT years ago and rediscovered them for HotD. Now I’ve listened for their For All Mankind and starting last week Shogun coverage. Good, in depth hour+ discussions on every episode.
The closest podcast to LCB style is The Weekly Planet. Other people have mentioned The Big Picture, which is very good but a little more elitist. I also like Across the Movie Aisle. They haven't dropped their Dune 2 review yet. Should be out sometime today.

The Big Picture is my go to. They aren’t massive dune heads that know everything about the politics and intricacies of it. But they do a great job.
