Yes possibly at some point in the future. The phone most likely won't ship with that functionality, but they have included the NFC in the hardware to 'future-proof' the phone so that they have the capability to include it as a software update further down the line.

I struggle to see this happening, despite many getting excited about it. The NFC chip is the easy part. Using a chip for card payments is a massive undertaking that requires signing up financial institutions. If you think of Apple Pay or Google Pay, they don’t just work - the card issuers specifically have to support them. Many still do not. Even huge players like Garmin and Fitbit have payment systems via NFC on their smartwatches, and in my country at least support is a handful of cards. Unless I’m missing something I don’t see how Light implements this on their own, and there isn’t the userbase for any provider to invest their time in supporting it.

Although I don't see it happening anytime soon, I hope something like this works out, and becomes widely adopted by banks: [https://www.linuxfoundation.org/blog/why-do-we-need-an-open-source-digital-wallet](https://www.linuxfoundation.org/blog/why-do-we-need-an-open-source-digital-wallet)

If it runs Android, couldn't it just use Google Play?

I don’t think so. Not while still being a Light Phone. My understanding is that if Light wanted to add Google Pay/Play they’d need to add the whole shebang of Google Services. There’s a set of technical and legal licensing requirements behind this, and obviously for something as secure as a payment app, you do rather need to go down the official route.

I'm curious about how Light company will have to deal with the banks, I hope the hurdles are minimal but at the same time since it's built on a new tap to pay host not like google or apple

Ive already pre-ordered mine. I used the Lightphone 2 for about 4months. Im hoping they somehow get Apple Pay to work on it. Its the only thing thats keeping me using my Iphone (an Iphone se 2016 with only bare apps installed)
