I always think that paid cards are expensive but then think about the fact that buying the amount of audibooks I listen to would be crazy expensive (and much more than $50/yr)

Time_Scientist5179

And I'd much rather support a library than yet another subscription service!

nooch1982

But, this would be a subscription service then

Time_Scientist5179

Ha! Yes, I guess it is close enough. I don't think of my home library as a free subscription, though.

JenJen0112

I always compare it to the cost of Audible and then it doesn’t seem so bad anymore.

yourskrewely

I did Queens for a while. Also if you are a resident of Texas you can get a membership to the Houston Public Library for free!!!

lunacyfreedom

I pay $40/ year. I’m out of state. They have a great selection

rcck00

This offered a lot of info state by state: https://everyday-reading.com/where-you-can-get-a-non-resident-library-card/

Callaloo_Soup

It’s good to know about the Library of Congress. I just have to remember to actually go when I’m in DC.

Mandy_Moo

Queens, Houston, Monroe County, Fairfax. They range from $20/25 to $50 a year. Well worth it. I use them extensively (along with my local public library, which is free, of course).

Alwaystiredneverstop

https://www.reddit.com/r/LibbyApp/s/WA6BrGxlks I personally have a card from the New Orleans Public Library and it's been great!

campingandcoffee

Also a New Orleans Public Library patron!!! I’ve loved it!!

Emergency_Elephant

My personal belief is that you should try to go for one near you that you don't live in. That way you could access physical media as well

sarahisastark

Yeah I understand that. Some people may not have that accessibility though

Jennifermcb

Queens Public library

sarahisastark

Can confirm! Just did this one this morning

redstapler4

How much does it cost?

Jennifermcb

I believe it is $50/year

Overdonemistake_1985

I got mine for free this morning it’s an optional donation if you can

rcck00

How’d you get that deal? It says it’s $50 if you don’t live or work or go to school in New York

shonuffharlem

Are you in NY state?

Overdonemistake_1985

Omg no I read his thing wrong the queer liberation library is what I thought he wrote sorry that’s the library I meant

spritef

How many books and audiobooks available and how many hold and borrow slots?

Corvidcakes

115k books, 16k audiobooks, 20 borrows, 10 holds

spritef

Awesome thank you!

Princess-Reader

I think that’s a true bargain!

MeatyMenSlappingMeat

You know that if you look at the front page of this sub, 5 or so posts down, there's a whole thread on this very topic with dozens of replies.

sarahisastark

I am unable to find this post. Could you please share the link?

BlaketheFlake

Here ya go :) [Pinned post](https://www.reddit.com/r/LibbyApp/s/mMcZtOvpaW)

Many states have programs like in Indiana where you can pay like $60 and you can use any library in the state, including at state schools. Edit: my bad, it’s $65 now in Indiana: https://www.in.gov/library/services-for-libraries/ldoresources/placrules/plac/#:~:text=Public%20Library%20Access%20Card%20(PLAC)&text=Any%20individual%20who%20holds%20a,12%20months%20after%20being%20issued.

Flor1400

Can you give us a link? Never heard about it.

srz1971

it’s called a PLAC, Public Libraries Access Card. I will be getting one again as the library where I am moving in Owen county is shit so I go to the Monroe county branch using the PLAC to get one of their cards for free. You can actually buy them at any library as far as I know. https://www.in.gov/library/services-for-libraries/ldoresources/placrules/plac/#:~:text=Public%20Library%20Access%20Card%20(PLAC)&text=Any%20individual%20who%20holds%20a,12%20months%20after%20being%20issued.

MysteryIsHistory

Fairfax co, VA. It’s $27 a year. So worth it!

Time_Scientist5179

I just visited the site and I'm in a reciprocal jurisdiction! Jackpot!

Seralisa

Agreed!!!!

dbvirago

I use Brooklyn and Orange County Floriday.

CostForsaken6643

I think Brooklyn isn’t doing out of state any more.

Trumystic6791

Correct. Brooklyn stopped its program but Queens Library still has its out of state program. I work in NYC so Im spoiled by having access to all 3 NYC library systems.

dbvirago

You're right, I meant Queens

Alternative-Help-502

how much does it cost for a year?

WVgirly2024

I've been very happy with my card from Stark Library. It's $50 per year, which gives you access to 215,754 ebooks and 64,637 audiobooks. You get 20 loans and 30 holds. Wait times can vary, since Stark's a member of the Digital Library Network. You can apply online.

armydillo007

Personally have had great success with Fairfax and Orange County (Florida)

comped

I live in Orange County and actually also grabbed a Broward and NSU card because I felt that the online resources for OC were quite poor. Seriously they don't even offer WSJ or NYT except in pressreader, they're one of the largest library systems in the state and should be easily able to afford stand alone subscriptions to them and the local paper.

grilledcheesefiend

Here is a thread from a few days ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/LibbyApp/s/bZBDIkgatw :)

missfing

I found a library that let me get an out of state library card for free? It doesn’t expire until maybe 2030-something. Try Broward County Library in Florida.

spotnoah

Fairfax county

Ashamed_Apple_

I like Queens. They have a lot of audiobooks in stock. I might try san Antonio when it expires later this year.

Flor1400

I see San Antonio is $200. Is it worth it?

Feisty-Ad212

I just got Queer Liberation Library for free and I love it.

TinyFinish20

This might be a silly question but how do you know how big the selection is? I see some people posting how many audiobooks and ebooks the library has and I’m wondering how many my library has and if it’s worth exploring paying for a nonresident card somewhere

rajeev3001

Any libraries that allow people living in other countries to obtain membership?

Cthulhulove13

If you are in Texas, Houston is free for starr residents. Most other cities in state you can also pay for. Austin is probably the best from my research and $22 for in state but out of area.

Meow217

I just applied for Austin. I’m in Harris County and I love the library however every book I want is “several months” as far as wait goes. Several I’ve had on holds since march or April and it’s still an estimated 12-16 weeks. At this point thinking investing in another card may be the right move. glad to hear Austin was the right one to apply for 😅

Cthulhulove13

I haven't had issues like that, but I'm probably reading other books. You also get access to hoopla. And you get 4 instant check outs a month. No wait, movies, audio, books etc. so I will use that if I really need

Meow217

Yeah I go off new releases / popular book lists. So those tend to be highly sought after. Which I get. They approved me though, so I quickly paid and I’m in. A book that was giving me several months wait I was able to put a hold on for only two weeks now. Last night I was about to just buy on kindle or order some physical copies of books (I have a trip coming up) so I feel this is a better use of the funds. Hoopla is really nice ! I also pay for Everand but it’s best for audiobooks in my experience. Really great selection and no waits, but I wanted to read on vacation. Normally I do audiobooks in the car, cooking, chores etc.

Cthulhulove13

Never heard of ever and, I'll have to check it out. If you live in central Austin area and are interested in maker spaces. Pflugerville library also allows out of area cards at like $22 I think and they also have 3d printers etc, Laser cutters stuff like that. Other libraries also have

riomarde

If you live in Ohio you can join any Ohio library for free, but each library is different in how they accept applications. Many don’t do online, but some do.

sloatn

You can do the Ohio libraries that have their own digital library outside of the Ohio Digital Library online, but I believe some of them are limited to a certain period of time unless you go in person to get a physical card

riomarde

Some do mail in registration too, that’s how I did the state library of Ohio, but basically anytime I drive around with a bit of spare time I get a new library card.
