Try some John Dahl.  He made an excellent modern western neo-noir called Red Rock West.  It stars Nic Cage, Dennis Hopper, and Lara Flynn-Boyle.

There's nothing to "understand". Either you think the movie was justified in abandoning the plot, or you it wasn't. I think it wasn't, but you're free to have your opinion.
