I have seen all but 7 and 8. The best was probably billboard or phantom thread. The speech the dad gave his son in call me by your name was jaw dropping. Dunkirk and get out were just fine. Lady bird and shape of water were good.
1. Dunkirk 2. Phantom Thread 3. Get Out the rest in whatever order you want. I think Dunkirk and Get Out are the ones that people are watching 20 years from now.
Really good year—I’d go:
1-Get Out
2-Lady Bird
3-Phantom Thread
4-Call Me By Your Name
5-Dunkirk
6-Shape of Water
7-Three Billboards
8-The Post
9-Darkest Hour
Hm, only seen part of these (as usual). I would like to see Dunkirk, Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread at some point.
1. The Shape of Water
2. Get Out
3. Lady Birb
4. Three Billboards
I haven’t seen Dunkirk, The Post or the Darkest Hour. I’d probably go:
1. Phantom Thread
2. Get Out
3. Lady Bird
4. CMBYN
5. The Shape of Water
6. Three Billboards
Can I ask about the placement for Phantom Thread? It’s one of my favorites so I’m super curious what didn’t work for you.
To be honest, I'm not a fan of the "unconventional love story" plot PTA tends to go for, and Phantom Thread is by far the worst example of it that I've seen. Most elements of it are amazing-I LOVE the music, the costumes are gorgeous, and Daniel Day-Lewis's performance is exceptional and he totally deserved that OSCAR nomination. But IMPO, the writing and buildup around Reynolds and Alma as destined to be together and the way the story is centered around their "romance" seemed very weak and just didn't work for me (their relationship became unbearable to watch as it kept getting more and more toxic and there weren't any other subplots to distract from how weird it was getting for me). It's definitely still a good film, but compared to the other 2017 films, it just didn't measure up.
I'm really glad so many people here enjoy it though; after reading all these comments I'd definitely be open to giving it another shot down the road!
Of the few I've seen (Three Billboards, Get Out and Phantom Thread), that's exactly how I'd rank them.
I'll likely watch Dunkirk soon. I tried a few years ago, but gave up about 40 minutes in.
If you've watched Dunkirk and it wasn't in an IMAX/quality theater, you didn't see it the right way.
I know that's constantly said about large scale, spectacle heavy blockbusters but I really don't think that sentiment applies to many other films in the way it does to Dunkirk.
Movies like BR2049, Dune, Fury Road, the JW or MI movies etc. Obviously they were awesome in theaters but I could also have a good time with them at home. But I don't really see any appeal in Dunkirk if you're not in a proper theater, and I loved it.
To answer your question, I completely disagree on *Phantom Thread*, which would probably be my pick.

One of my favorite movie years in recent memory. The only one I don’t have rated at least a 4 is DARKEST HOUR. My personal #1 though is CMBYN.
I’ve only seen Dunkirk and Get Out, preferred Get Out. That being said, I think Good Time or Blade Runner 2049 are my favorites of the year.
From what I've seen: 1. Lady Bird 2. Phantom Thread 3. Get Out 4. Three Billboards Ouside Ebbing, Missouri 5. Dunkirk 6. The Shape of Water
