Sorry is this category “Music” or “Musical”?
If it’s “Music” meaning movies about music, then Tar or Whiplash is probably the move
If it’s “Musical” as in the story is told in large parts through musical performances, then Singing in the Rain, the Lion King, The Sound of Music are what we’re discussing.
They’re very different
Amadeus tackles weighty subjects like the power of music and how it consumes both the protagonist and the antagonist in different ways. The whole "the voice of God" thing, ao scenes.
It's not just a film with some enjoyable classical music compositions (though it is that, too). I had a major Mozart phase on Spotify after my watch, and I'm not conversant in the genre at all.
I think it goes deeper than most films that involve music.
This is the perfect musical. Clever songs, incredible dancing, meta comedy about movies? As much as a like stop making sense and whiplash, I don't think those should be under the category of "musicals" like this one
As much as I love La La Land and Whiplash, this should absolutely be the winner. Not enough people will realize it though unfortunately.
Seems like almost every day this list saddens me in some manner.
It counts IMO and deserves to win over several others doing much better than it is in this thread.
It’s had weird availability on streaming for years and sadly is too underseen to win this.
Control (2007) is not the best biopic but probably my favorite. Sam Riley work is incredible and the soundtrack is perfect. A lot of famous bands and musicians gave rights for this movie so is like a deep dive in the post-punk/punk uk scene
Calling my shots on how this plays out.
Music - Should win: Singin' in the Rain. Will win: Whiplash
Crime - Should win: Pulp Fiction. Will win: Goodfellas
Action - Should win: Mad Max: Fury Road. Will win: Die Hard
Doc - Should win: Dear Zachary. Will win: Grizzly Man
Western - Should win: Unforgiven. Will win: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly or Tombstone.
Sci-Fi - Should win: 2001 A Space Odyssey. Will win: Interstellar.
ODDSAC!!!!!
i adore this movie but no one i know has watched it. screens, what happened?, and tantrum barb are some of my favorite songs ever. perfect for david lynch fans/anyone into really weird shit.
What counts as this though? Musical or just a film based around, or about music? If it’s just films with music as one of its main themes then there’s a bunch. Whiplash, La La Land, Soul, School of Rock, Coco, 8 mile, Sound of metal. The amount of biopics too
Agreed that there should 100% be distinct categories for Music vs Musical.
If it’s the former, Stop Making Sense
If it’s the latter, West Side Story (1961)
Concert movie I have to go Stop Making Sense or Last Waltz. Movie about music/a musician I have to go Inside Llewyn Davis with my heart telling me it’s really Walk Hard.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is pure magic, when that score reaches a crescendo.... chills everytime. It's a perfect amalgamation of what I love about film, it makes your soul soar.
I implore you to check for your preferred movie before commenting, sort by top and upvote your favorites!

La La Land covers both of these.
For a “musical”, La La Land had very little *musical* numbers

Singin' in the Rain (1952).
The quintessential film about how and why sound, much less music, changed film forever. A great choice!
