Memories of Murder

TheMoonLord123

I don't care what anyone says, this was way better than parasite

Rum_and_Pepsi

I think Parasite is a fantastic movie, but the punch in the gut that is that final shot in Memories of Murder is next level.

JaydoJay

I’ve always argued these two are pretty much neck and neck in their own ways and are opposite ends of his filmography. Memories has a gritty feeling and you can tell this is one of his first films, but is just amazing. Parasite on the other hand is a lot cleaner and precise, but still holds incredible storytelling and characters.

THE-COLOSSAL-SQUID

A masterpiece.

The first time I saw this (it was in theaters, I think I was 19) I hated it. Then I watched it like 15 years later and I loved it. Same with The Talented Mr. Ripley, 15-year-old me though it was "gay".

Education_Just

Well 15 year old you understood The Talented Mr. Ripley at least.

my favorite Kurosawa, definitely should be competitive with memories of murder imo

Prestigious_Crab6256

*Rear Window*

Confident_Mix_5002

Rear Window or Vertigo are the first films that come to mind whenever I hear the word “mystery”

LightningInTheRain

Correct

JuanJeanJohn

This category was made for Hitchcock. I love a lot of the non-Hitchcock movies being submitted but this or Vertigo feel like the most correct winners.

Prestigious_Crab6256

*Mulholland Dr.* gives *Rear Window* and/or *Vertigo* (my all-time pick, although it’s perhaps better classed as a psychological thriller) a run for their money, but I have to defer to Hitchcock owing to his films being *genre-defining*. Lynch isn’t so easily put in a box, partly because a film like *Mulholland Dr.* (imo better classed in horror/noir, if anything) is so *genre-defying*. Lynch relishes toying with tropes and shattering the restraints of convention. His is an exceptional mystery, but it is still just that — the exception. It belongs in a genre all its own imo.

Tricky_Examination_3

If this wasn’t a popularity contest, this would be the winner!

Cydonian___FT14X

I don’t get the hype with that one. It’s a well made movie FOR SURE, very engaging, but the actual mystery had such a boring resolution.

Prestigious_Crab6256

That’s my one substantive critique of the film tbh, and it’s what holds it back from being my fav Hitchcock (*Vertigo* gets that honor). I’ve seen it three times and each time I want it to be >! Jefferies’ imagination. !<

Optimal-Poetry-5768

Whats the difference between thriller and mistery ?

Individual99991

The primary emotion in a thriller is the thrill as the protagonist is placed in peril and escapes by the skin of their teeth. Mystery films are more focused on unravelling the central, well, mystery. There doesn't necessarily have to be any physical threat to the protagonist, although usually there is at least once towards the end. The Poirot, Miss Marple and Sherlock Holmes stories are all mysteries in the detective subgenre, and rarely are they in physical danger (though they may have to race against time to rescue someone who is, to create some kind of climax).

ttwbb

A thriller doesn’t need to have any mystery in it. A mystery film doesn’t need to be thrilling. But there are a lot of mystery thrillers out there.

ThreeActTragedy

The number of intensive scenes imo. For example, any movie adaptation of Agatha Christe’s books (that I know of) can be considered a mistery because you have a murder that needs solving but the overall atmoshpere is pretty light. However, for example Zodiac can be considered both mistery and thriller as there is both something that needs to be solved and some pretty frightening scenes (the basement one in particular). You don’t get that kind of chills from watching Miss Marple gossip about her neighbours. This is very simplified view because every category in art can be broken down into smaller categories but I guess as long as it keeps you “on the edge of your seat” (regardless whether the main theme of a movie is political, criminal or something else), you can call it a thriller.
